  • The main object of this study was to understand the body image and body management behavior associated with desiring a thinner and more muscular body. The present study examined whether the drives for thinness and muscularity occur concurrently for both male and female college students, and whether there are gender differences. Moreover, the effects of objectified body consciousness on drive for thinness and drive for muscularity were investigated. A self-administered survey was conducted and a total of 390 data were used for data analysis. Participants included 197 male college students and 193 female students. Results indicated that male students reported significantly lower drive for thinness and higher drive for muscularity than female students. However, the drives for thinness and muscularity were significantly correlated for both male and female college students, and they reported discrepancies between their BMI and self-perceived weight and muscle mass. Findings supported the significant effects of objected body consciousness on the drives for thinness and muscularity for both male and females. Sub-dimensions of objectified body consciousness had differential effects on drive for thinness and muscularity. Specifically, body surveillance and body shame significantly influenced male and female students' drive for thinness, while their control belief did not have significant effects on their drive for thinness. Additionally, body shame emerged as significant unique predictor of drive for muscularity. In terms of gender comparisons, while the effect of body shame was the strongest for the males, the effect of surveillance was as strong as that of body shame for the females.

The data were obtained through 510 female students living in Gwangju. The major findings were as follows: 1) Women's needs of job-seeking were very intensive but their preparation level was relatively low. Colleges' support system and organization utility were uneffective because their programs were not specified for women. Women generally recognized that social improvement for gender equality in employment system were very important and more practical methods and contents were demanded in education for job-seeking. 2) Women's grade and major were significant variables in the differences of job preparation, consciousness of job-seeking, social support and appraisals. Therefore, college supporting systems must consider students' characteristics. 3) The job-seeking mechanisms must be changed to more effective systems for the achievement of gender equality. Also community members, colleges and students should make collaborate endeavors for the women empowerment.

  • The purpose of this paper was to introduce the material status of women's epistolary literature published in modern study materials for writing letters in Chinese in 1920~30s and analyze gender consciousness shown in them. To this end, five kinds of representative modern study materials for writing letters in Chinese in 1920~30s were selected and 55 women's letters published in them were summarized. Through this, it was pointed out that the subjects of women's epistolary literature are mainly 'males' of families and the form of 'reply.' This implies that the authors of modern study materials for writing letters in Chinese recognized women's Chinese letters as a secondary means to prepare for inevitable communication with men rather than the leading medium of communication. The first aspect of gender consciousness shown in women's epistolary in modern study materials for writing letters in Chinese is to reaffirm the traditional gender order by calling and resetting women as the position and role in the family. The second aspect of gender consciousness is that female education materials which seemed to reflect the modern gender order are actually mentioned under the very skeptical view. The third characteristic aspect of gender consciousness is that the motif of 'discipline about economic activity' is only noticeable in women's epistolary published in modern study materials for writing letters. This setting was regarded as a means that the authors of modern study materials for writing letters in Chinese transferred the responsibilities of maintaining livelihood and managing household to women. Women's epistolary in modern study materials for writing letters in Chinese is the material which is noticeable in terms of showing the possibility of female Chinese Writing in modern times but according to the analysis of this paper, it is the text showing female form and women's writing judged within thoroughly male-centered imagination. That is, women's epistle text has a significance that allows us to read conservative reentry of modern study materials for writing letters in Chinese more clearly.
