Roles of Dopamine in Proliferation of Gastric-Cancer Cells (도파민의 위암세포증식에서의 역할)

  • Purpose: Dopamine is a neurotransmitter, but in the GIT, the roles of dopamine are a regulator of epithelial cell proliferation, an endogenous protective factor, and a regulator of stomach cancer cell proliferation. By using two different gastric-cancer cell lines, we assessed the effects of dopamine and dopamine receptors on the proliferation of human gastric-cancer cells. Materials and Methods: To assess the effects of dopamine and dopamine receptors on the proliferation of human gastric-cancer cells, we investigated cell proliferation and the expression of D1, D2L, and D2S receptor in two gastric-cancer cell lines, SNU 601 and KCU-C2. The effects of dopamine and dopamine receptors on the level of the cell proliferation were determined by staining with an A/H/E (acridine orange, hoechst and ethidium bromide) mixture. Results: After dopamine treatment, the cell viability was significantly decreased in SNU 601 cells (P<0.05) where the D2L receptor was absent, but not in KCU-C2 cells. After treatment with raclopride, a D2 receptor antagonist, dopamine-dose-dependent inhibition of cell proliferation was observed in SNU 601 cells (P<0.05). After treatment with SCH 23390, a D1 receptor antagonist, dopamine significantly increased ceil proliferation in KCU-C2 cells (P<0.05), but inhibited ceil proliferation in SNU 601 cells (no D2L receptor). Conclusion: The dopamine signal via the D1 or the D2S receptor inhibited proliferation of gastric-cancer cells, but that via the D2L receptor increased proliferation. These results suggest that the regulatory effects of dopamine in the gastric-cancer cell proliferation may be controlled by using dopamine receptors.

  • Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is a minimally invasive and effective treatment for early gastric cancer. The criteria for determining the suitability and success of ESD have expanded, with changes in the histopathological classification of gastric carcinoma, including results from molecular research. Treatment methods have also diversified to include targeted therapies and immuno-oncology agents. To improve communication between clinicians and pathologists, it is crucial to understand the standardized diagnostic forms of gastric cancer. This study aims to examine the handling method of ESD specimens and describe the pathological findings of gastric tumors.

Endoscopic Resection of Early Gastric Cancer in Korea: Recent Results and Future Directions (조기위암 내시경절제술-최근 국내 성적과 발전방향)

  • Endoscopic resection has been established as one of the treatment options for selected cases of early gastric cancer in Korea. Yet the indications, best treatment methods, management of complications and follow-up methods after the procedure are still uncertain. Some large-scale multicenter studies have recently been reported in Korea. In this review, I will provide an overview of the recent published articles and future directions for endoscopic resection of early gastric cancer.

Clinicopathological Features and Localization of Gastric Cancers and their Effects on Survival in Turkey

  • Background: This study was designed to examine changing trends in localization of gastric cancer in Turkey in recent years. Materials and Methods: A total of 796 adult patients with newly diagnosed, histologically proven adenocarcinomas, treated and followed up at our oncology center between 2000-2011, were examined retrospectively. In all cases tumor localization were identified and recorded with clinicopathological features. Results: The median age was 58 with a range between 22-90 for the 552 men and 244 women. Median follow up was 12 months (1-276) and median overall survival was also 12 months (11.5-12.4). There was a trend for a change in tumor localization from distal to proximal. Survival of patients was low with advanced T and N stage tumours. Positive surgical margins, lymphovascular invasion, perineural invasion, cardioesophageal localization were predisposition factors for metastatic disease in gastric cancer. There was no relation between age or sex and histopathological type of gastric cancer. Conclusions: There is a trend in our country for a change in gastric tumour localization from distal to proximal, with clear significance for treatment choices.

  • PET detects only less than 50% of early gastric cancer and 62-98% of advanced gastric cancer. Therefore, mass screening programs are recommended for all adults over the age of 40 for early detection and early treatment of gastric cancer through endoscopy or various radiological tests. The most important step after being diagnosed with gastric cancer is accurate staging, which mainly evaluates tumor resectability to avoid unnecessary surgery. Important factors that affect tumor resectability are whether the tumor can be separated from adjacent organs or important blood vessels, the extent of lymph node metastasis, presence of peritoneal metastasis, or distant organ metastasis. To evaluate the extent of local tumor invasion, anatomical imaging that has superior spatial resolution is essential. There are a few studies on prognostic significance of FDG uptake with inconsistent results between them. In spite of lower sensitivities for lymph node staging, the specificities of CT and PET are very high, and the specificity for PET tends to be higher than that for CT. Limited data published so far show that PET seems less useful in the detection of lung and bone metastasis. In the evaluation of pleural or peritoneal metastasis, PET seems very specific but insensitive as well. When FDG uptake of the primary tumor is low, the distant metastasis is also known to show low FDG uptake reducing its detection. There are only a few data available in the evaluation of recurrence detection and treatment response using FDG PET.

  • Objectives : Gastric cancer is a malignant tumor of the digestive tract that not only has a high mortality rate, but also affects quality of life. In Traditional Korean Medicine, acupuncture and herbal medicines can increase the survival rate for Gastric cancer and improve the quality of life. Traditional Korean Medicine treatment played an important role when used alone or in combination with chemotherapy. However, there is still insufficient evidence to support the efficacy and safety of Traditional Korean Medicine in patients undergoing chemotherapy after surgery. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to systematically evaluate the effect of oriental medicine treatment on patients as a complementary therapy for Gastric cancer. Methods : 2 researchers will search using EMBASE, Pubmed, CNKI, Cochrane Library, CiNii, KMBASE, KISS, OASIS, RISS, ScienceON. The search period of the database is from inception until June 2022. This study will include a randomized controlled trial of GC for acupuncture and herbal treatment. Primary outcomes include anti-cancer effects. Secondary outcomes evaluate survival rates and improvements in quality of life. The data uses Review Manager Software 5.4. Results : This study will provide a systematic evaluation by synthesizing the anti-cancer effect, survival rate and quality of life of Gastric cancer when Traditional Korean Medicine is combined with chemotherapy. Conclusion : The conclusion of this study will provide a basis for determining whether Traditional Korean Medicine treatment for Gastric cancer treatment is an effective and safe treatment method in clinical practice.
