  • The physiochemical interactions of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) and adsorbing agents can be described using a very powerful tool, inverse gas chromatography (IGC). Sorption behavior of 1-MCP on various adsorbing agents was assessed using the profile peaks of 1-MCP at an infinite dilution concentration using the IGC technique. Chromatogram peaks of 1-MCP adsorption were not observed for the adsorbing agent activated carbon. The forms of sorption isotherms followed Henry's law, and behaved according to the binding site theory. Specific retention volume and distribution coefficients for 1-MCP on the adsorbing agents were determined at 50, 60, 70, and $80^{\circ}C$, respectively. Silica gel had a much higher number of binding sites for 1-MCP compared to Tenax-TA and activated clay agents. Meanwhile, activated carbon proved to be a very strong binding agent for 1-MCP based on 1-MCP efficiency experiments on the selected adsorbing agents. However, as a proper means of delivering 1-MCP molecules to fresh food products, activated carbon is not fit for the binding and release of 1-MCP gas under dry or high humidity conditions because activated carbon has a strong affinity for 1-MCP, even when treated with distilled water.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the biofiltration treatment characteristic for benzene vapor gas. Compost and calcium silicate porous material were used as biofilter fillers. Gas velocity and empty bed retention time were 15 m/hr and 4 min, respectively. Benzene gas removal efficiency of P-Bio (calcium silicate porous material with inoculation) was the highest and maintained in over 98%. After shock input of benzene gas, the removal efficiency of P-Bio biofilter was recovered within 2 days, while 5 days were taken in CP-Bio (compost + calcium silicate porous material mixture with inoculation) and CP (compost + calcium silicate porous material mixture without inoculation) biofilters. The removal efficiency of P-Bio biofilter was near 100% in the loading rate of <$85g/m^3$(filling material)/hr, It was shown that the maximum elimination capacities of P-Bio, CP-Bio, and CP biofilters were 95, 69, and $66\;g/m^3$(filling material)/hr, respectively. Microbial number of P-Bio, which the number was the lowest at start-up, was 3 orders increased on operational day 48. $CO_2$ was generated greatly in order of P-Bio, CP-Bio, and CP biofilters.

  • A rapid gas chromatographic (GC) profiling method for the simultaneous analysis of volatile and nonvolatile organic acids was applied to alcoholic beverages (white wine, red wine, brandy, and beer). It involves the solid-phase extraction of organic acids using Chromosorb P as the sorbent and diethyl ether as the eluent with subsequent triethylamine treatment. The resulting triethylammonium salts of acids were directly converted to volatile tert.-butyldimethylsilyl derivatives, which were analyzed by dual-capillary column GC and GC-mass spectrometry. From the alcoholic beverages studied, more than 29 organic acids were detected. When the simplified retention infer (RI) spectra of organic acids, and the direct comparisor method between alcoholic beverages and a test sample were attempted to identify a test sample, it was quickly recognized to be a red wine with the 998 ppt match quality value.

  • This research was performed for developing of biological treatment process of odor gas such as MEK, $H_2S$, and toluene, which was generated from the food waste recycling process. To establish the operational conditions of odor gas removal by small-scale biofiltration equipment, it was continuously operated by using toluene as a treating odor object. When the odor treating microorganisms were adhered to fibril form biofilter, high removal efficiency over $93\%$ was obtained by biofilm formation. At 400 ppm of inlet odor gas concentration and 10 sec of retention time, the removal efficiency was $76\%$ and $93\%$ in 1 st stage reactor and End stage reactor, respectively. However, the removal efficiency remained over $97\%$ at the operational conditions above 15 sec of retention time.

  • A rapid analytical method was developed to determine multiple pesticide residues in apples and pears using gas-liquid chromatography (GLC). The samples were extracted with water-miscible solvents and purified by cleanup procedures serially comprising liquid-liquid partition and solid-phase extraction (SPE). Each analyte was separated and determined by a high-resolution GLC equipped with electron-capture detector (ECD) and nitrogen-phosphorous detector (NPD). A total of 196 pesticides, which were previously classified into 5 groups each for ECD and NPD based on their retention behaviors on the capillary column and responses to the detector, were subjected to the recovery experiment. In compliance with the analytical criteria, 70 to 120% of recovery and less than 20% relative standard deviation the proposed method could be successfully applied to analyze 136 and 133 pesticide residues in apples and pears, respectively, which enabled not only rapid screening but quantitation of the residues. Even though less reliability was resulted from unacceptable recovery range, rest of pesticides including 43 and 45 analyzes in apples and pears, could be also detected for their identity. The proposed method fliled to cover 17 and 18 pesticides for apples and pears, which mostly showed high polarity or heat-lability but could be suitable far fast surveilance or monitoring of fruit harvests.

  • Quantity and composition of biogas from semi-continuous anaerobic digestion of straw were obtained experimentally in laboratory scale digesters fed with 1 liter of 5% straw-water mixture and maintained at 35$^{\circ}C$. Experiments were carried out for hydraulic retention time(HRT) of 8, 10 and 15days, respectively. The amount and composition of biogas produced were measured until steady-state was achieved for each run. The amount of biogas and methane percent go through a maximum and decrease continuously towards the steady-state after three times operation of hydraulic retention time(HRT). Methane gas production rates at steady-state increase with the increasing of HRT. Biogas production of 0.45 liter/day with 25% methane, 0.42 liter/day with 33.7% methane and 0.492 liter/day with 31.7% methane were obtained for 8, 10 and 15days of HRT, respectively. The high proportion of soluble carbohydrates present in straw makes the volatile fatty acids to build up within the digester causing a drop in pH that inhibits digestion. Regular control of pH is therefore necessary by adding alkalinity. Reductions in COD increase with increase in HRT. The stratification of plant material within the digester is different from that of manure, and modifications in design and operation of digesters may be necessary if they are fed with plant matter.

  • Relative retention times (RRTs) of RAH molecules in HPLC are trained and predicted intesting sets using a multiple linear regression (NLR) and an artificial neural network (ANN). The maindescriptors in QSRR are molecular connectivity ($^1X_v,\;^2X_v$), the length-to-breadth ratios (L/B), and molecular dipole moment(D). L/B which is related with slot model is a good descripter in ANN, but isn't in MLR. Varainces which show the accuracy of prediction times in testing sets are 0.0099, 0.0114 for ANN and MLR, respectively. It was shown that ANN can exceed the MLR in prediction accuracy.

  • Over 30% of domestic soil contamination has occurred via petroleum products and complex oil. Moreover, contamination by complex oil is more intense than it is by a single petroleum product species. In this study, we analyzed sectional TPH (total petroleum hydrocarbon) pattern and sectional ratio of current domestically distributed petroleum products, such as kerosene, diesel, bunker C, and lubricant and complex oils, to determine pollution characteristics of the soil. In the TPH pattern, kerosene, which is a light distillate, had an early retention time, and lubricant oil, which is a heavy distillate, had a late retention time in the gas chromatogram. In addition, we obtained a complexly contaminated soil via diesel and lubricant oil from the Navy and inspected it for its ratio of complex oil species. The inspection results showed that this soil was contaminated with 85% diesel and 15% lubricant oil. The method developed in this study could be used to determine complex petroleum sources and ratios at sites with accidentally contaminated soil.

  • To increase the efficiency of a two-stage anaerobic wastewater digestion system, various polymers were added to the methanogenic reactor as supports. The addition of polyurethane addition (6%, w/v) to the methanogenic reactor facilitated the organic loading rate (2-day Hydraulic Retention Time), higher than that of the conventional methanogenic reactor (6-day HRT). During the operation of the polyurethane-added reactor, a significant decrease in the organic mass in the effluent (COD 5-6 kg/l) was achieved, compared to that of the conventional reactor (COD 15-20 kg/l). The methane gas production rate also improved about 3-fold in the polyurethane-added reactor. More biomass was found to accumulate in the polyurethane-liquid phase (volatile solid, 26-28kg) than in the free-liquid phase (volatile solid, 5- 7 kg/l) after 90 days of operation. A scaled-up experiment with a polyurethane-added 2.5-1 reactor confirmed the previous results, and no adverse effects such as plugging or channeling due to decreased efficiency was observed even after 4 months of operation.

  • An effecient gas chromatographic method is described to be used routinely for the rapid profiling and identification of biochemically important organic acids. It involves the solid-phase extraction of organic acids from aqueous samples using Chromosorb P as the solid sorbent and diethyl ether as the eluting solvent, with subsequent triethylamine treatment. The resulting triethylammonium salts of acids were directly converted to volatile tert-butyldimethylsiyl derivatives, which were simultaneously analyzed by two capillary columns of different polarity, DB-5 and DB-1701, under the identical temperature programming condition. The retention index (RI) and area ratio (AR) values of each peak measured on DB-5 and DB-1701 enabled rapid identification of acids by computer RI library search and AR comparison. The application of the present method to the organic acid profiling of various complex samples is demonstrated.
