Gas nitriding is a surface hardening process where nitrogen is introduced into the surface of a ferrous alloy. During fusion welding of nitrided carbon steel, the nitride inside weld metal is dissolved and generates nitrogen gas, which causes porosities - blow holes and pits. In this study, several laser welding processes such as weaving welding, two-pass welding, dual beam welding and laser-arc hybrid welding were investigated to elongate the weld pool to enhance nitrogen gas evacuation. The surface pits were successfully eliminated with elongated weld pool. However blowholes inside the weld metal were effective reduced but not fully disappeared.
The object of this study is to investigate the effect of compounded welding through the AE(Acoustic Emission) characteristics for weld HAZ(Heat Affected Zone) under the static tensile test. This study was carried out an SWS 490A, high tension steel for electric shield metal arc welding(SMAW), $CO_2$ gas arc welding and TIG welding. Data displays are based on the measured parameters of the AE signals, along with environmental variables such as time and load. The accumulated AE event curve of HAZ definitely have the point of inflection subject to tensile test. The results of the tensile test of HAZ come out electric shield arc welding >$CO_2$ gas arc welding>TIG welding in case of single welding, but generally the tensile test of HAZ come out electric shield arc welding> TIG welding > $CO_2$ gas arc welding. These history plots give us useful and powerful information to analyze the results of material evaluation testing.
In this study. two-dimensional heat flow and residual stress in arc brazing to join the pipe and plate structure were analyzed by using a commercialized FEM package. Advantages offered by arc brazing are that strong joints can be produced with lower heat input than that of previous gas metal arc welding and narrower heat affected zone can usually be obtained than that in the case of torch brazing. To investigate the effects of process variables and minimize the thermal effects on the structure, this study presents a method for analyzing the heat flow and residual stress in arc brazing process according to variables such as traveling speed, torch angle and position. The simulation results were compared with the experimental ones to verify the numerical analysis method. The experiments include the measurement of HAZ size from the section of joints and residual stresses by using strain gages named 'section method'. A comparatively good agreement between the results of numerical analysis and experimental ones could be obtained in both of the temperature distribution and residual stress of the brazed structure. Using the proposed numerical analysis method, the process parameters were evaluated to get proper arc brazing conditions.
This paper describes tbe design and implementation of the adaptive controller to maintain the glood weld quality in gas metal arc welding process. The weld torch travel speed and the surface temperature are taken, respectively, as an input and an output of the welding control system. Because of the very complex phenomena of the process, the input-output dynamic model was experimentally identified by AIC (Akiake Information Criterion). Based on the model structure, the explicit model reference adaptive controller is simulated in order to regulate the output tempernture to the desired level.
Superduplex stainless steels are important materials to the oil and gas industry, especially for off-shore production. TIG welding of super duplex stainless steels to obtain the optimal phase balance between austenite and ferrite is mainly achieved by controlling the cooling rate and the weld chemistry. The latter depends on the filler wire chosen and the shielding gas used. If TIG welding of superduplex stainless steels is performed with argon shielding gas only, then nitrogen gets lost from the weld pool, which can result in a ferrite-rich weld metal, with an inferior corrosion resistance than parent metal. In the present study, nitrogen permeation model from the shield gas which gets into the weld metal in DCEN-TIG welding has suggested. This plasma stream model shows characteristics of permeation of nitrogen ions into the molten metal due to the strong physical effect of plasma stream which formed by the arc pressure rather than the permeation of nitrogen ions caused by electric effect.
The welding quality by Gas Tungsten Arc Welding shows very high level, but the welding speed is lower than that of gas metal arc welding. Also, the welding quality by automatic GTAW is variable as the arc characteristics is changed by the consumption of electrode tip. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relation between the properties of tungsten electrode tip and the various arc characteristics at high current region. In this study, the high welding current 200A was applied to the repeated arc start test and long term arcing test using the $\phi$3.2 tungsten electrodes with cone angle 30$^{\circ}$, 45$^{\circ}$, 60$^{\circ}$sharp tip, and 60$^{\circ}$surface polished (S.P.) sharp tip. It was confirmed that the maximum arc pressure by the initial electrode condition was highest in 45$^{\circ}$sharp tip, and the next in 60$^{\circ}$sharp tip, the last was in 30$^{\circ}$sharp tip and 60$^{\circ}$S.P.. But, the maximum arc pressure after the repeated arc start test and long term arcing test was decreased considerably. But, the maximum arc pressure was highest also in 45$^{\circ}$ sharp tip after the tests, the next was in 30$^{\circ}$sharp tip, and the last was in 60$^{\circ}$sharp tip and 60$^{\circ}$S.P.. The arc start characteristics was the most excellent in 60$^{\circ}$S.P., By long term arcing test, the lanthania included in tungsten electrode was extinguished at tip surface preferentially, therefore the arc characteristics of electrode tip got worse.
The weld quality of $CO_2$ arc welding is closely related to the arc stability. As the characteristics of the arc are excessively complex and nonlinear, it is not easy to make the arc model as mathematical form and to control the arc state to be stabilized. This paper was aimed to estimate the arc stability and to control for stabilizing the arc state in short circuit metal transfer mode of $CO_2$ arc welding. For these purposes, the behaviors of arc stability was investigated at different welding conditions using Mita's arc stability index, and the fuzzy control algorithm which uses the arc stability index as control imput and the arc voltage as control output was developed. In the control of the arc stability, the experiments of two cases were performed; the case of setting an initial welding voltage arbitrarily, the case of the step change in workpiece shape. Obtained results were as follows; Mita's arc stability index was able to be estimated qualitatively in the case of using the inverter type welding power source and the control performance for stabilizing the arc status was excellent in the case of existing step change disturbance.
Shielding gas has significant effects on arc stability, metal transfer and weld quality in the gas metal arc welding (GMAW) process. The double gas-shielded MAG(DMAG) and auxiliary gas-shielded MAG (AMAG) torches are investigated for their capability to provide argon-rich gas mixture using small amount of argon gas through the inner and auxiliary nozzles, respectively. Argon composition with the DMAG torch is calculated numerically, and compared with the measured data using the gas chromatogrphy. Gas flow pattern of the DMAG torch is calculated to change from the laminar to turbulent flow when total gas flow rate becomes larger than 4.5 liter/min at room temperature. While argon-rich shielding gas was obtained using both the AMAG and DMAG torches, the AMAG torch provides higher argon composition than the DMAG torch, which demonstrates that argon gas can be utilized more efficiently with the AMAG torch.
Recently, there has been a rapid development in computer technology, which has in turn led to develop the automated welding system using Artificial Intelligence (AI). However, the automated welding system has not been achieved duo to difficulties of the control and sensor technologies. In this paper, the classification of the optimized bead geometry such as bead width, height penetration and bead area in the Gas Metal Arc (GMA) welding with fuzzy logic is presented. The fuzzy C-Means algorithm (FCM), which is best known an unsupervised fuzzy clustering algorithm is employed here to analysis the specimen of the bead geometry. Then the quality of the GMA welding can be classified by this fuzzy clustering technique and the choice for obtaining the optimal bead geometry can also be determined.
