Welding variables and conditions in gas metal arc welding (GMAW) effect on the quality and productivity of the weld, extensive research efforts have been made to analyze the effect of the welding variables and conditions. In this study dynamic behavior of GMAW system is investigated using the characteristics of the power supply, wire and welding arc. Characteristic equation of wire is modified to include the effect of droplets attached at the electrode tip. The dynamic characteristics of arc length, current, voltage with respect to the step, ramp inputs of CTWD was simulated. From results of simulation, some predictions about dynamic characteristics of GMAW and welding process are available. The proposed simulator and results appear to be utilized to determine the proper welding conditions, to be improved by considering power supply dynamic characteristics.

Burr grinding, Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) dressing, ultrasonic impact treatment, and peening are used to improve fatigue life in steel structures. These methods improve the fatigue life of weld joints by hardening the weld toe, by improving the bead shape, and by creating the compressive residual stress. In this study, a new post-weld treatment method improving the weld bead shape and metal structure at the welding zone using Friction Stir Processing (FSP), a welding process, is proposed to enhance fatigue life. For that, a pin-shaped tool and processing condition employing Friction Stir Processing (FSP) is established through experiments. Experimental results revealed that fatigue life is improved by around 50% compared to as-welded fatigue specimens by reducing the stress concentration at the weld toe and by generating a metal structure finer than that of flux-cored arc welding (FCAW).

Adaptive control in the robotic GMA(Gas Metal Arc) welding is employed to monitor the information about weld characteristics and process paramters as well as modification of those parameters to hold weld quality within the acceptable limits. Typical characteristics are the bead geometry composition micrrostructure appearance and process parameters which govern the quality of the final weld. The main objectives of this paper are to realize the mapping characteristicso f penetration through the learning. After learning the neural network can predict the pene-traition desired from the learning mapping characteristic. The design parameters of the neural network estimator(the number of hidden layers and the number of nodes in a layer) were chosen from an error analysis. partial-penetration single-pass bead-on-plate welds were fabricated in 12mm mild steel plates in order to verify the performance of the neural network estimator. The experimental results show that the proposed neural network estimator can predict the penetration with reasonable accuracy and gurarantee the uniform weld quality.
The diesel engine of the merchant ship has been aperated in severe environments more and more, because the temperature of the exhaust gas of a combustion chamber is getting higher and higher with increasing use of heavy oil of law quality, due to the significant increase in the price of oil in recent some years. As a result, the degree of wear and corrosion between exhaust valve and seat ring is more serious compared to other engine parts. Thus the repair welding of exhaust valve and seat ring is a unique method to prolong the life of the exhaust valve, from an economical point of view. In this study, the corrosion property of both weld metal and base metal was investigated using electrochemical methods such as measurement of corrosion potential, cathodic and anodic polarization curves, cyclic voltammogram, and polarization resistance in 5% H2SO4 solution. The test specimen was a part of an exhaust valve stem being welded as the base metal, using various welding methods. In all cases, the corrosion resistance as well as hardness of the weld metal zone was superior to the base metal. In particular, plasma welding showed relatively good properties for both corrosion resistance and hardness, compared to other welding methods. In the case of DC SMAW (Shielded metal arc welding), corrosion resistance of the weld metal zone was better than that of the base metal, although its hardness was almost same as the base metal.

The arc, generated by Tungsten Inert Gas(TIG) welding, is stable and provides excellent quality of the weld. Since automation is difficult, a lot of work is performed by hand. In addition, to obtain the uniform weld quality is difficult when using a base metal having a nonuniform welding line, or when welding inside a pipe. Generally, TIG welding power has the characteristic of constant-current. The welding voltage is changed in proportion to the arc length. Hence, the automatic voltage control equipment should be applied at the TIG welding system. The automatic voltage control equipment has been designed using LabVIEW software. It consists of a manufactured voltage divider circuit, and jig for moving the torch. The voltage measurements and driving of the motor were performed through the algorithm implementation in LabVIEW. Welding was conducted while increasing the arc length. In this process, it was confirmed that the automatic voltage control equipment kept the arc length constant.
SM45C steel rods being used generally for power transmission shafts and machine components was selected and welded by Butt-GMAW(Gas Metal Arc Welding) method. An estimation of fatigue life was studied by constructing S-N curve. Fatigue strength of base metal zone showed higher values than one of weld zone in low cycles between $10^4$ and $10^6$cycles. However, significant decrease in fatigue strength of base metal was found around $10^6$cycles, which were almost same as one of heat affected zone. This decrease was attributed that initial residual stress of the steel rods distributed by drawing process was diminished by continually applied load, and resulted in softening of base metal. The fatigue limit of the weld zone was highest in the boundary between deposited metal zone and heat affected zone, and followed by in the order of deposited metal zone, base metal zone, and heat affected zone. Based on these results, it is revealed that the stress for safety design of machine components using SM45C butt-welded steel rods must be selected within the region of the lowest fatigue limit of heat affected zone.
Recently just as in the automobile industry, shipbuilders also try to reduce material consumption and weight in order to keep operating costs as low as possible and improve the speed of production. Naturally industry is ever searching for welding techniques offering higher power, higher productivity and a better quality. Therefore it is important to have a details research based on the various welding process applied to steel and other materials, and to have the ability both to counsel interested companies and to evaluate the feasibility of implementation of this process. Submerged-arc welding (SAW) process is usually used about 20% of shipbuilding. Similar to gas metal arc welding(GMAW), SAW involves formation of an arc between a continuously-fed bare wire electrode and the work-piece. The process uses a flux to generate protective gases and slag, and to add alloying elements to the weld pool and a shielding gas is not required. Prior to welding, a thin layer of flux powder is placed on the work-piece surface. The arc moves along the joint line and as it does so, excess flux is recycled via a hopper. Remaining fused slag layers can be easily removed after welding. As the arc is completely covered by the flux layer, heat loss is extremely low. This produces a thermal efficiency as high as 60% (compared with 25% for manual metal arc). SAW process offers many advantages compared to conventional CO2 welding process. The main advantages of SAW are higher welding speed, facility of workers, less deformation and better than bead shape & strength of welded joint because there is no visible arc light, welding is spatter-free, fully-mechanized or automatic process, high travel speed, and depth of penetration and chemical composition of the deposited weld metal. However it is difficult to application of thin plate according to high heat input. So this paper has been focused on application of the field according to SAW process for thin plate in ship-structures. For this purpose, It has been decided to optimized welding condition by experiments, relationship between welding parameters and bead shapes, mechanical test such as tensile and bending. Also finite element(FE) based numerical comparison of thermal history and welding residual stress in A-grade 3.2 thickness steel of SAW been made in this study. From the result of this study, It makes substantial saving of time and manufacturing cost and raises the quality of product.

The semi-automatic gas metal arc welding equipment was developed and the weldability of zinc coated steel pipes was evaluated in terms of strength, porosity and welding parameters including shielding gas composition. The good bead appearance and the reduction of porosity in the welds could be possibly obtained by adding $O_2$ to Ar. The strength and joint efficiency of welds made by the semi-automatic welding equipment was about 1.8 times higher compared with welds manually made. The integrity of welds was confirmed by the water pressure test as well, Finally, it is expected that the weld productivity will be enhanced even unskilled welders can produce quality welds by operating the semi-automatic welding equipment.

The objective of this thesis is to investigate the influence of welding residual stresses on the fatigue growth behavior of welding residual stresses on the fatigue growth behavior of cracks located transverse to the weld bead. For this purpose, G.T.A. (Gas Tungsten Arc) welding was performed on the Al. Alloy 1100-0 plate and the same initial crack is made on HAZ(Heat Affected Zone), weld metal and base metal respectively. C.T.(Compact Tension) specimens were used as experimental material. Initial welding residual stresses were measured by using strain gage sectioning method. All specimens were tested under constant amplitude load with stress ratio R=0.1

Lately, high production rate welding processes for Al alloys, which are used as LNG FPSO cargo containment system material, have been developed to overcome the limit of installation and high rework rates. In particular, plasma-metal inert gas (MIG) hybrid (PMH) welding can be used to obtain a higher deposition rate and lower porosity, while facilitating a cleaning effect by preheating and post heating the wire and the base metal. However, an asymmetric undercut and a black-colored deposit are created on the surface of PMH weld in Al alloys. For controlling the surface defect formation, the wire feeding speed and nozzle diameter in the PMH weld was investigated through arc phenomena with high-speed imaging and metallurgical analysis.
