  • KIER has been developed a compact and highly efficient fuel processor which is one of the key component of the residential PEM fuel cells system. The fuel processor uses methane steam reforming to convert natural gas to a mixture of water, hydrogen, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and unreacted methane. Then carbon monoxide is converted to carbon dioxide in water-gas-shift reactor and preferential oxidation reactor. A start-up time of the fuel processor is about 1h and CO concentration among the final product is maintained less than 5 vol. ppm. To achieve high thermal efficiency of 80% on a LHV basis, an optimal thermal network was designed. Internal heat exchange of the fuel processor is so efficient that the temperature of the reformed gas and the flue gas at the exit of the fuel processor remains less than $100^{\circ}C$. A compact design considering a mixing and distribution of the feed was applied to reduce the reactor volume. The current volume of the fuel processor is 17L with insulation.

  • The precise calculation of gas absorption coefficient in the radiative transfer equation is very important to the prediction of radiative heat transfer induced from liquid engine plume in view of base insulation design. For this purpose, the WNB model for gas absorption coefficient is described with the selection of important parameters and then the calculated results are compared with those of SNB model for validation. Total emissivity, narrow band averaged intensity and total intensity are calculated and compared to the results of SNB model. As results, the total emissivity and the total intensity are well matched within 3.1% and roughly 5 % error, respectively. Moreover, the gas modeling database is constructed with estimation of the combustion gas composition of $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ for liquid engine plume.

  • Syngas or fuel gas production through biomass gasification is a century old technology. Biomass gasification is getting more and more interest recently as one of competitive renewable energy technologies. It does not contribute to increasing greenhouse gases(GHG). A down-draft gasifier was designed and tested for syngas quality using different fuel sets in this study. The gasifier was of about 100kW capacity. Tests were conducted at air flow rates ranging from 10 to $60m^3/hr$. Fuels tested included wood chips and wood char. The results showd that gas quality in terms of flammability was reasonably good when the temperatures were over $600^{\circ}C$ inside the gasifier. Although $800^{\circ}C$ or higher is recommended, gas quality was reasonably good. If insulation was provided outside the gasifier, the temperature would increase. When wood chips were used, the temperature was below $600^{\circ}C$ and gas quality was not good. It seemed that calorific values of fuel and height of reduction zone in the gasifier are very important. The results of the tests would provide important information for designing more improved gasifier and its operation.

  • This study was conducted to discover a substitute of $SF_6$ gas. $SF_6$ gas is widely used across the industries. Thanks to superior electrical properties, in particular, it has been commonly used in electrical industry. However, there have been a lot of studies on its serious effect on global warming. As a substitute of this synthetic gas, a mixture of dry air and $N_2/O_2$ was chosen in this study. In case of $N_2/O_2$, dielectric strength differs depending on the mixing ratio. This study examined dielectric breakdown and flashover after adjusting oxygen percentage in the dry air. This test was conducted in a quasi-uniform electric field depending on pressure, oxygen concentration and gas mixtures. The test results found that dielectric voltage and flashover voltage were the highest at a certain oxygen concentration. It is the results of this photoionization and electron attachment of oxygen.

  • Infrared (IR) detectors are widely used for many applications, such as temperature measurement, intruder and fire detection, robotics and industrial equipment, thermoelstic stress analysis, medical diagnostics, and chemical analysis. Quantum detectors commonly need to be refrigerated below 80 K, and thus a cooling system should be equipped together with the detector system. The cooling load, which should be removed by the cooling system to maintain the nominal operating temperature of the detector, critically depends on the insulation efficiency of the cryochamber housing the detector. Thermal analysis of cryochamber includes the conduction heat transfer through a cold well, the gases conduction and gas outgassing, as well as radiation heat transfer, The transient cooling characteristics of an infrared detector cryochamber are investigated experimentally in the present study. The transient cooling load increases as the gas pressure is increased. Gas pressure becomes significant as the cooling process proceeds. Cool down time is also increased as the gas pressure is increased. It is also found that natural convection effects on cool down time become significant when the gas pressure is increased.

  • Since SF6 gas was discovered in the early 1900s, it has been widely used as an insulation material for electrical equipment. While various indicators have been developed to diagnose oil-immersed transformers, there are still insufficient indicators for the diagnosis of gas-insulated transformers. When necessary, chemical diagnostic methods can be used for gas-insulated transformers. However, the field suitability and accuracy of those methods for transformer diagnosis have not been verified. In addition, since various types of decomposition gases are generated therein, it is also necessary to establish appropriate analysis methods to cover the variety of gases. In this study, a gas-insulated transformer was diagnosed through the analysis of decomposition gases. Reliability assessments of both simple analysis methods suitable for on-site tests and precise analysis methods for laboratory level tests were performed. Using these methods, a gas analysis was performed for the internal decomposition gases of a 154 kV transformer in operation. In addition, simulated discharge and thermal fault experiments were demonstrated. Each major decomposition gas generation characteristics was identified. The results showed that an approximate diagnosis of the inside of a gas-insulated transformer is possible by analyzing SO2, SOF2, and CO using simple analysis methods on-site. In addition, since there are differences in the types of decomposition gas generation patterns with various solid materials of the internal transformer, a detailed examination should be performed by using precise analysis methods in the laboratory.

  • According to thermal degradation on power transformers, it is known that electrical, mechanical and chemical characteristics for power transformer's oil-paper are changed. In the chemical property, especially, when the kraft paper is aged, the cellulose polymer chains break down into shorter lengths. It causes decrease in both tensile strength and degree of polymerization of paper insulation. Also the paper breakdown is accompanied by an increase in the content of various furanic compounds within the dielectric liquid. It is known that furanic components in transformer oil come only from the decomposition of insulating paper rather than from the oil itself. Therefore the analysis of furanic degradation products provides a complementary technique to dissolved gas analysis for monitoring transformers when we evaluate the aging of insulating paper by the total concentration of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide dissolved in oil only. Recently, the analysis of furanic compounds by high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) using IEC 61198 method for estimating degradation of paper insulation in power transformers has been used more conveniently for assessment of oil-paper. It is know that the main products which is produced by aging are 2-furfuryl alcohol, 2-furaldehyde(furfural), 2-furoic acid, 2-acetylfuran, 5-methyl-2-furaldehyde, and 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde. For investigating the accelerated aging process of oil-paper samples we manufactured accelerating aging equipment and we estimated variation of insulations at $140^{\circ}C$ temp. during 500 hours. Typical transformer proportions of copper, silicon steel and iron have been added to oil-paper insulation during the aging process. The oil-paper insulation samples have been measured at intervals of 100 hours. Finally we have analyzed that 2-furoic acid and 2-acetylfuran products of furanic compounds were detected by HPLC, and their concentrations were increased with accelerated aging time.

  • One of the most feasible solution for reducing the excessive energy consumption and carbon dioxide emission is usage of more efficient fuel such as hydrogen. As is well known, there are three viable technologies for storing hydrogen fuel: compressed gas, metal hydride absorption, and cryogenic liquid. In these technologies, the storage for liquid hydrogen has better energy density by weight than other storage methods. However, the cryogenic liquid storage has a significant disadvantage of boiling losses. That is, high performance of thermal insulation systems must be studied for reducing the boiling losses. This paper presents an experimental study on the effective thermal conductivities of the composite layered insulation with aerogel blankets($Cryogel^{(R)}$ Z and $Pyrogel^{(R)}$ XT-E) and Multi-layer insulation(MLI). The aerogel blankets are known as high porous materials and the good insulators within a soft vacuum range($10^{-3}{\sim}1$ Torr). Also, MLI is known as the best insulator within a high vacuum range(<$10^{-6}{\sim}10^{-3}$ Torr). A vertical axial cryogenic experimental apparatus was designed to investigate the thermal performance of the composite layered insulators under cryogenic conditions as well as consist of a cold mass tank, a heat absorber, annular vacuum space, and an insulators space. The composite insulators were laminated in the insulator space that height was 50 mm. In this study, the effective thermal conductivities of the materials were evaluated by measuring boil-off rate of liquid nitrogen and liquid argon in the cold mass tank.

  • Currently, the most commonly used EPS insulation material has been mainly used because its ease of adhesion with concrete. However, due to poor adhesion with wallpaper, separate adhesion needs to be strengthened and there are cases of breakage or grooves in the process of dismantling the mold. The biggest problem is that when a fire breaks out, various harmful substances are present and highly flammable. Cork used in this study is a truly eco-friendly building material that is taken from between the outer and inner bark of cork trees and does not damage the wood. Also, it is a porous material that is made up of countless cells and contains an air gap between the cells. It is very light in weight between 0.06 and 0.07 and has excellent insulation with a heat conductivity of 0.04W/mK. In addition, it has high stability in the topic of conversation because it does not produce harmful gas when burned and has self-sustaining properties. However, research on cork, an eco-friendly building material with excellent performance to date, is scarce Therefore, we encourage existing scholars to raise interest in new eco-friendly building materials through this study. It also aims to manufacture insulation boards with new inorganic properties using the low weight and heat conductivity held by the cork.

  • This study was carried out for the purpose of determination of maintenance period and investigation of weak point due to freeze when the gas heater of KOGAS valve station Is not operated in winter season. 3-dimensional non-linear numerical simulation was conducted in order to predict the time and location which bath water in heater reaches to ice point. FLUENT V 5.0, commercial code, is used for thermal fluid flow analysis. We thought this was problem of heat conduction solving the energy equation and modeled gas heater by using the real geometry and scale for performing the 3-dimensional simulation. It was analyzed complex heat transfer phenomena considering convection due to air on surface, conduction in insulation material, natural convection of liquid in heater and heat loss through the pipe.
