This study was conducted to investigate effective ways to meet social and cultural interest in and needs of gardens and gardening. A total of 191 respondents who answered they were living in Gyeongnam region in the questionnaire were selected: 102 (53.4%) were males and 89 (46.6%) were females. In frequency of garden visits, 45% of the respondents answered they visited gardens once a year. Their preferred companion was family (43.6%), followed by friends/colleagues (24.3%). Their important motives of garden visits included admiration of gardens' scenery and ambience, pleasure in being outdoors, relaxing mentally and physically, and appreciation of plants. Relatively less important motives included understanding or educating about nature and environmental conservation, and interest in garden design and horticulture techniques. In the overall assessment of gardens and gardening, the quality of the establishment, management and operation of botanic gardens and arboreta in Gyeongnam region scored 3.32 scale, which was close to the level of 'fair.' Also, the respondents agreed at 3.91 scale that it was necessary to improve the garden creation, gardening, and garden culture. Meanwhile, many people in Gyeongnam region did not clearly understand differences between garden and public park, also had a very obscure perception of public garden. The results of importance-performance analysis (IPA) indicated that it is necessary to concentrate on directing and developing some programs such as admiration of beautiful and exotic plants, and education on garden culture including garden making and horticultural techniques.

Because of various stresses with rapid change of social structure, the number of the disabled increase steadily. So, the interest of touch garden which the disabled interact with nature and communicate with the non-disabled is more in demand. This study carried out a survey for landuse, facilities, therapeutic garden in creating touch gardens targeting the disabled using them. The results are as follows: At first, the appropriate natural facilities can lead return visit of the disabled. The second, general facilities for information and barrier-free are insufficient. The third, the disabled demand more places for sense of touch and vision, and, also they demand more places for feeling various living things and sense of the season. And the last, the disabled have no experience in therapeutic gardens, but they have consensus for creating special places for the disabled. This study carried out a survey for specially designated user such as the disabled, but through it, it is expected to establish developed design guidelines for creating touch gardens and therapeutic gardens.
This study intended for Cheongryongsan Community Garden in Gwanak-gu, one of the demonstration places for 'Community Garden' Project recently implemented by the Seoul Government. This study had two major purposes: investigating the current status of the management and usage and identifying its characteristics; investigating users' awareness to consider the construction and operation directions of sustainable community gardens. This study was conducted based on several surveys such as an investigation into the spatial configuration and the management system of parks through a field study, a use survey through a questionnaire survey for vegetable garden users and an awareness survey about the construction direction of gardens direction preferred by users through the analytical hierarchy process (AHP). As a result of a questionnaire survey for vegetable garden users, the usage status was summarized as follows: Considering the common trends in the 2012 and the 2013 user survey, women used Cheongryongsan Vegetable Garden more than men. Over fifties used it most of all users. Users were mostly neighborhood residents. They used to visit there three to five times a week and stayed for about 30 minutes to one hour. Users differently responded to the question related to the order of priority for the use of the garden in the 2012 and the 2013 survey. They had increasingly used it for individuals' production activities more than social exchanges. As a result of making an AHP analysis for general park users, vegetable garden users there were clear differences in the targets which each subject put emphasis on in relation to the construction and operation of vegetable gardens. General park users recognized a vegetable garden as a park where park functions and the functions of the vegetable garden coexisted. On the other hand, vegetable garden users viewed it as a space where they attached importance to the functions of the vegetable garden like an allotment. Last, this study contemplated subjects related to the construction and operation of vegetable gardens which had to be considered in the future. Vegetable gardens tended to be biased as personal hobby places. It was viewed that the main reason was insufficient support activities for vegetable garden education and exchange programs originally planned when vegetable gardens had been constructed. Vegetable garden users recognized vegetable gardens as places for individuals' farming activities like allotments. For the desirable operation of vegetable gardens, it would be necessary to give priority to the park management before the production activities in individuals' vegetable gardens. The important role of the government would be to build the base through the provision of education and opportunities so that a local resident organization could actively participate in the management of a vegetable garden after a vegetable garden was constructed. It would be necessary to make a use survey and an awareness survey for users conducted in this study on a regular basis because the surveys could be important basic data in the decision-making process for the sustainable operations of the vegetable garden.
Nowadays, many people suffer from stress because of their jobs, studies, traffic, etc. Daily stress may cause many diseases (Garrett, 1991). One of the methods for reducing stress is experiencing a natural environment (Frumkin, 2001). Cibodas botanical garden (CBG) is one of the most famous travel destinations in Bogor, Indonesia. CBG has the potential for tourism activities. However, an economic assessment is required to verify their sustainability. The research objectives of this study were to identify the characteristics of tourism utilization in CBG, to analyze the economic tourism value of CBG, and to measure the effectiveness of traveling to a natural environment for reducing stress. The research method used was the survey. This study used three data analysis methods: (1) descriptive analysis which was used to identify the characteristics of tourists, (2) travel cost method (TCM), and (3) contingent valuation method (CVM). Results showed some differences in the characteristics of foreign and domestic tourists respondents in age, educational background, income level, number of dependents, and the frequency of their visits. CBG has a high economic value, amounting to IDR (Indonesian Rupiah) 5,508,932,605,405 or approximately USD (United State Dollar) 413,000,000. WTP (Willingness to Pay) of domestic tourist respondents was IDR 29,702 or USD 2.2 per visit, while the value of foreign tourist respondents reached IDR 39,700 or USD 2.9 per visit. Respondents found it preferable to pay more for tickets (WTP value) than to buy medication to reduce their stress.
Utilizing spaces for awareness could be superficially noble. However, the typology of spaces played an important role in addressing the awareness of translating the messages through tangible forms, which in this context are sculptures. Assuring the efficacy of the typology of the spaces that is compatible with the content is important to ensure its timelessness to the dynamic demographical change of viewers. Therefore, the study proposes an investigation of the efficacy of typology of public urban space; garden that accommodates memorial sculptures. The study intends to analyze the features and flaws of ASEAN Sculpture Garden, as a mediatory role of ASEAN in instilling awareness of unity between ASEAN members to the public. The objective of the study is to analyze the efficacy of the garden to accommodate the rich memorial sculptures. The body of the research is formed by theoretical and case study research. It is projected by three methods; archival research, semi structured interviews and site documentation; direct observations and site visit. The qualitative data then will be analysed using Actor Network theory, keyword coding and site findings. Findings showed that as the main objective of the garden is to exhibit the sculptures, it could be summed up that it has failed to meet the apparent intention based on the site analysis conducted by the researcher. The typology of the space should be able to communicate the project's aims continuously rather than serving the function temporarily. The variables, which are space and time factors are debatable, as the neighboring tourist spot, National Monument residing the wide square managed to attract public attention due to its great efficacy of typological space regardless the time factor. As a conclusion, the typology of space is a huge factor to ensure the park's success.
The development of urbanization in the twentieth century according to the rampant growth of industrialization not only brought about the improvement of life-quality but also induced us to reconsider the contemporary issues such as crisis of echo system which made us aware of the values and significance of the system and sustainable environments. As sustainability has been recognized as the holistic concept, it has been highlighted as one of the core concepts in the studies with the present ecological perspective. Particularly, as the plan of urbanization in Korea which had been based on the deconstruction has been converted into the regeneration, economic and cultural regeneration is also demanded for the future plan besides material regeneration. This study aims to scrutinize various attributes of socially sustainable designs in Yerba Buena Garden of San Francisco, USA which has been globally well known as a successful example of urban regeneration. By way of visit-and-observation of the place, the research for the study was conducted during the month of December, 2007. Three researchers visited Yerba Buena Garden to observe and take photographs and to obtain relevant data and public documents in local public library. Socially sustainable design was measured on the basis of such principles; social facilitation, permeability and accessibility, safely and emotional stability, softness and feminism, and child care convenience. Relevant data were systematically organized to support and prove the above principles. The result of the study is expected to effectively be utilized for Korean environment plan and design as a benchmarking guidelines against the crisis of degeneration and the aging society with the lowest birthrates in the world.

This study was conducted to analyze the characteristics of visitors to Hadong Bukcheon Iceland Poppy (BIP) Festival in order to sustain and enhance local flower festivals as a garden tourism. A questionnaire was distributed to BIP Festival visitors from May 18 to 27, 2018. A total of 167 responses were subject to be analyzed. Descriptive statistics analysis was mainly used and focused on describing the results in direct to explain the BIP Festival as a garden tourism. The number of female visitors and those in their 40s and 50s was high. Most of the visitors were found to live in other cities or counties near the area where BIP Festival was held and to prefer festivals held on the theme of nature and local features. The revisit rate and awareness of BIP Festival were 52.1% and 72.5% respectively. They mainly obtained the information on BIP Festival from people around them including family members, friends and colleagues, or from the Internet. Most answered that BIP festival was the most important destination on their trip. The major motives of BIP Festival visit included "spending quality time with family or friends (34.1%)", "appreciating Iceland poppy and gardens (25.6%)", and "enjoying oneself (tranquility, mental rest, etc.; 21.3%). This study was conducted in order to analyze user behavior and preference factors in the outdoor spaces of mental hospitals. Among hospitals with 250 or more beds, 5 hospitals were selected in consideration of size of garden and diversity of garden elements. The subject of the study was restricted to mild cases of schizophrenia while 30~50 patients were selected on the recommendation of their doctor from 5 hospitals, respectively. The physical environment was analyzed, focusing on space components, after visiting the sites of study. A face to face interview method was selected in consideration of patients' cognitive abilities, a total of 230 questionnaires were used for the analysis. The results of the study can be summarized as follows. Rest facilities occupy the largest numbers in the components of garden, and those are followed by landscape facilities, walking/exercise facilities, and experience facilities. Outdoor walking/exercise programs are classified into group walks and free walks with most patients taking group walks. Most of the patients visit these outdoor spaces every day but some of them rarely use the outdoor areas. In order to increase the efficiency of using these outdoor spaces, the percentage of space for ensuring a sense of control should properly harmonize with the percentage of space to facilitate patients in having social contact. With regard to the reasons for preferring the most widely-used outdoor spaces, landscape/environment property was the most important, followed by functionality and then accessibility. Major activities in the preferred space are mainly composed of walking/exercise and rest. The preferred facilities are waterscape facilities such as ponds, waterfalls and fountains, rest facilities such as pergolas and shade trees, and lawn. It was understood that naturalness should be considered to be the most important factor in constructing a new healing garden, followed by aesthetics and amenities. Single facilities rated by preference for introduction were flower beds, trails, and lawn. According to type, waterscape facilities such as fountains, ponds, waterfalls and waterwheels were most preferred. Space for natural distraction and programs for the cultivation of flower beds were also preferred. The ideal image of a healing garden should be bright, familiar, and orderly as a whole, having plenty of introduced facilities. Open spaces were preferred to enclosed spaces. Finally, the image of a garden that helps patients feel calm was thought to be that of the most ideal garden.
Recently multifaceted advantages of urban agriculture are emerging in civil society and related policy arena such as food safety, environment, and social welfare. This study tried an estimation of residents' willingness-to-pay for urban farming to examine feasibility of using part of urban green infrastructure as urban farm (e.g. allotment garden). A survey targeting Bundang and Dontan new-town residents was carried out and willingness-to-pay for urban farm rental was estimated by contingent valuation method (CVM). The estimated rent was cross-checked with the rental cost and travel cost paid by hobby farm users in the outskirt of metropolitan area. The result of this study showed that the potential demand for urban farming is ample if urban farms or allotment gardens are planned within new development areas. That is, 72.6 percent of new-town residents questioned had intention of using allotment garden within urban parks and green spaces. Estimated willingness-to-pay for renting a plot, $16.5m^2$ of urban farm, was about 236,000 won(KRW), which is higher than rent for a plot of allotment garden which is located out of city. Variables which were statistically significant to estimated willingness-to-pay for urban farming were sex, age, and occupation of respondents, among other explanatory socio-demographic variables, while expected frequency and duration of visit to urban farm were insignificant.
