  • Micro electric spark discharge device was fabricated on a FOTURAN glass wafer using MEMS processing technique and its performance of electron discharge and subsequent formation of ignition kernel were tested. Micro electric spark device is an essential subsystem of a power MEMS that has been under development in this laboratories. In a combustion chamber of sub millimeter scale depth, spark electrodes are formed by electroplating Ni on a base plate of FOTURAN glass wafer. Optimization of spark voltage and spark gap is crucial for stable ignition and endurance of the electrodes. Namely, wider spark gaps insures stable ignition but requires higher ignition voltage to overcome the spark barrier. Also, electron discharge across larger voltage tends to erode the electrodes limiting the endurance of the overall system. In the present study, the discharge characteristics of the proptotype ignition device was measured in terms of electric quantities such as voltage and currant with spark gap and end shape as parameters. Discharge voltage shows a little decrease in width of less than 50㎛ and increases with electrode gap size. Reliability test shows no severe damage over 10$\^$6/ times of discharge test resulting in satisfactory performance for application to proposed power MEMS devices.

  • In this paper, the antenna which has a multiband operation (GSM850, EGSM, DCS1800, USPCS, W-CDMA) is proposed. This antenna was designed by the commercial software HFSS 3-D EM simulator, and it is organized by using a meander branch structure which has a via and lines on FR-4$(\varepsilon_r=4.4)$ substrate. Especially, it has a gap feeding structure which makes good operation at overall bandwidth. The designed antenna is manufactured by PCB processing, and measured by using a network analyzer and a test chamber. The manufactured antenna with the dimension of 8 mm width, 20 mm height and 3.2 mm thickness is able to applied as an internal antenna for multiband mobile phones.

  • In this study we investigated ac transport current losses in the face to face stack for the anti-parallel current flow, and compared the electromagnetic properties with those of the single SC tape as well as those of the same stack for the parallel current path. The gap between the SC tapes in the stack varied in order to verify the electromagnetic influence of the neighbors when current flows in opposite direction, and the model was implemented in the finite element method program by the commercial software, COMSOL Multiphysics 4.2a. Conclusively speaking, the loss was remarkably decreased for the anti-parallel current case, which is attributed the magnetic flux compensation between the SC layers due to the opposite direction of the current flows. As the gap between SC tapes was increased, the loss mitigation became less effective. Besides, the current density distribution is very flat cross the sample width for the narrower gap case, which is believed to be benefit for the power electric system. These results are all in good agreement with those predicted theoretically for an infinite bifilar stack.

  • The characteristics of the fluid force reduction of a square prism having a small triangular prism at the upstream side was investigated by measuring of lift and drag on the square prism The experimental parameters were the width ratios (H/B=0.2~0.6) of triangular prisms to the prism width and the gap ratios (G/B=0~3) between the square prism and the triangular prism. The drag reduction rate of the square prism was increased and then decreased with G/B in case of the same H/B, and was increased with H/B in case of the same G/B. The maximum drag reduction rate was represented by 78.5% at H/B=0.6 and G/B=1.5. The lift reduction rate of the square prism was hardly not affected by the width and gaps ratios, the average value was about 52.4%.

  • The Characteristics of the flowfields of a square prism having a small vertical plate at the upstream side was investigated by measuring of fluid force on the square prism and by visualization of the flow fields using PIV. The experimental parameters were the width ratios(H/B=0.2~0.6) of vertical plates to the prism width and the gap ratios (G/B=0~3) between the prism and the vertical plate. The drag reduction rate of the square prism was increased with H/B in case of the same G/B, and was increased and then decreased with G/B in case of the same H/B. The lift reduction rate of the square prism was hardly not affected by the width and gaps ratios, the average value was about 48.1%. In case of a square prism having a small vertical plate, the stagnation regions were represented in the upstream and downstream sides of the square prism.

  • Recently, magnetic forces are considered as a method for more efficient tooth movement. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of the changes of the magnetic volume on the magnetic forces. The universal testing machine and the electronic balance were used for the exact measurement of the force with constant air gap. While the magnet was kept same on one side, the magnetic volume of the other side was increased gradually in four manners. In the first group, the thickness was increased by adding same size of the magnets one after another while the thickness was increased by changing with a thicker magnet gradually in the second group. In the third group. the width was increased by adding same size of the magnets while the width was increased by changing with a wider magnet gradually in the last group. The results were as follows : 1. With the increase of the thickness, the magnetic force increased, while the magnetic force decreased with the increase of the width. 2. The magnetic force according to the change of the magnetic volume showed the distribution of the logarithmic function. 3. An originally thick magnet showed larger force than the added magnets although both of them had same volume.

  • Purpose : 3D Printers are used to create three-dimensional models based on blueprints. Based on this characteristic, it is feasible to develop a bolus that can minimize the air gap between skin and bolus in radiotherapy. This study aims to compare and analyze air gap and target dose at the branded 1 cm bolus with the developed customized bolus using 3D printers. Materials and Methods : RANDO phantom with a protruded tumor was used to procure images using CT simulator. CT DICOM file was transferred into the STL file, equivalent to 3D printers. Using this, customized bolus molding box (maintaining the 1 cm width) was created by processing 3D printers, and paraffin was melted to develop the customized bolus. The air gap of customized bolus and the branded 1 cm bolus was checked, and the differences in air gap was used to compare $D_{max}$, $D_{min}$, $D_{mean}$, $D_{95%}$ and $V_{95%}$ in treatment plan through Eclipse. Results : Customized bolus production period took about 3 days. The total volume of air gap was average $3.9cm^3$ at the customized bolus. And it was average $29.6cm^3$ at the branded 1 cm bolus. The customized bolus developed by the 3D printer was more useful in minimizing the air gap than the branded 1 cm bolus. In the 6 MV photon, at the customized bolus, $D_{max}$, $D_{min}$, $D_{mean}$, $D_{95%}$, $V_{95%}$ of GTV were 102.8%, 88.1%, 99.1%, 95.0%, 94.4% and the $D_{max}$, $D_{min}$, $D_{mean}$, $D_{95%}$, $V_{95%}$ of branded 1cm bolus were 101.4%, 92.0%, 98.2%, 95.2%, 95.7%, respectively. In the proton, at the customized bolus, $D_{max}$, $D_{min}$, $D_{mean}$, $D_{95%}$, $V_{95%}$ of GTV were 104.1%, 84.0%, 101.2%, 95.1%, 99.8% and the $D_{max}$, $D_{min}$, $D_{mean}$, $D_{95%}$, $V_{95%}$ of branded 1cm bolus were 104.8%, 87.9%, 101.5%, 94.9%, 99.9%, respectively. Thus, in treatment plan, there was no significant difference between the customized bolus and 1 cm bolus. However, the normal tissue nearby the GTV showed relatively lower radiation dose. Conclusion : The customized bolus developed by 3D printers was effective in minimizing the air gap, especially when it is used against the treatment area with irregular surface. However, the air gap between branded bolus and skin was not enough to cause a change in target dose. On the other hand, in the chest wall could confirm that dose decrease for small the air gap. Customized bolus production period took about 3 days and the development cost was quite expensive. Therefore, the commercialization of customized bolus developed by 3D printers requires low-cost 3D printer materials, adequate for the use of bolus.

  • The study deals with the development of a thermohydrodynamic (THD) computational procedure for evaluating the pressure, temperature and velocity distributions in fluid films with very rough geometry. A parametric investigation is performed to predict the bearing behaviors in the lubricating film having the absorbed layers and their interfaces determined by the rough surfaces with Gaussian distribution. The layers are expressed as functions of the standard deviations of each surface to characterize flow patterns between both the rough sur-faces. The velocity variations and the heat generation are assumed to occur in the central (shear) zone with the same bearing length and width. The coupled effect of surface roughness and shear zone dependency on hydrodynamic pressure and temperature has been found in non-contact mode. The procedure confirms the numerically determined relationship between the pressure and film gap on condition that its roughness magnitude is smaller than the fluid film thickness.

  • As a part of micro engine development feasibility estimation was done through fabrication and test of down scaled combustor and MEMS fabricated spark electrode. In an experimental observation of the down scaled combustion phenomena where flame propagation was observed by optical method and pressure change in combustor which gives the information about the reaction generated thermal energy was recorded and analyzed. Optimal combustor scale was derived to be about 2mm considering increased heat loss effect and thermal energy generation capability. Through the fabrication and discharge test of MEMS electrode effects of electrode width and gap was investigated. Electrode was fabricated by thick PR mold and electroplating. From the result discharge voltage characteristic in sub millimeter scale electrode having thickness of $40{\mu}m$ was obtained. From the result base technology for design and fabrication of micro engine was obtained.
