  • In the present wort the Laser-induced Fluorescence (LIF) technique and Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM) have been combined to measure the temperature distribution across a micro-scale liquid layer as a direct and non-invasive method. Only the fluorescent light emitted from a very thin volume around a focal plane can be selectively detected, and it enables us to measure the liquid temperatures even at the close vicinity of the walls. As an experimental verification, a test section consists of two flat plates (for heating and cooling, respectively) separated by about 240 microns was made, and the methanol mixed with a temperature-sensitive dye, Rhodamine B, was filled in the gap between them. The measured temperature distribution across the gap showed good linearity, which is a typical characteristic of conduction heat transfer through a thin liquid layer. In result, the CLSM-LIF technique proposed in the present study was found to be a promising method to measure the local temperatures in the liquid flow field in microfluidic devices.

  • One of the salient nuclear fuel performance parameters for new fuel types under development is changes in fuel thickness. To test the new commercially fabricated U-10Mo monolithic plate-type fuel, an irradiation experiment was designed that consisted of multiple mini-plate capsules distributed within the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) core, the mini-plate 1 (MP-1) experiment. Each capsule contains eight mini-plates that were either fueled or "dummy" plates. Fuel thickness changes within a fuel assembly can be characterized by measuring the gaps between the plates ultrasonically. The channel gap probe (CGP) system is designed to measure the gaps between the plates and will provide information that supports qualification of U-10Mo monolithic fuel. This study will discuss the design and the results from the use of a custom-designed CGP system for characterizing the gaps between mini-plates within the MP-1 capsules. To ensure accurate and repeatable data, acceptance and calibration procedures have been developed. Unfortunately, there is no "gold" standard measurement to compare to CGP measurements. An effort was made to use plate thickness obtained from post-irradiation measurements to derive channel gap estimates for comparison with the CGP characterization.

  • The full spade rudder for the high speed has advantage to prevent gap cavitation of the rudder. DSME has developed the full spade rudder and GL has carried out CFD analysis and FE analysis to confirm strength and fatigue for DSME and Owner. Necessarily, it needs to compare rudder torque & rudder force between CFD, FE analysis and full scale measurement. This report introduces the measurement method and application of strain gauge for measuring the rudder torque and rudder force for the 8,400 TEU container ship.

  • The study on the measurement method of the aerodynamic performance of a turbo compressor was conducted. It is well known that the performance and the efficiency of the compressor can be calculated from the temperature and pressure distribution in each stage of the compressor. In the past Pitot tubes and thermocouples were used to measure pressure and temperature respectively, and recently pressure and temperature rake is used in order to decrease the measuring time and the number of measurement. The miniature total pressure rake which is available in the compressor with a small axial gap is designed and is under development.

  • Recently, the rheology on the fluidity of materials has been progressed remarkably. Viscosity measurement for precision-accuracy has needed very important to measure the rheological properties of materials in the field of chemistry-fiber, paint, printing-ink, plastics, rubber, foodstuff-industry, etc. And many methods of measurement have been developed lately. So in this experimental study, small capacity torque transducer with type of strain gage, different method against other existing viscometers, measured viscosity about a liquid that has flowing characteristics of newtonian liquid. Using the assumed computational equation of viscosity, it has same value of viscosity in each different radius of rotating cylinder. In the result, this equipment will be used in the viscosity measurement of a liquid taking flowing characteristics of newtonian liquid.

  • The bow of the nuclear fuel assembly is a well-known phenomenon. One of the vital criteria during the history of nuclear fuel development has been fuel assembly's mechanical stability. Once present, the fuel assembly bow can lead to safety issues like excessive water gap and power redistribution or even incomplete rod insertion (IRI). The extensive bow can result in assembly handling and loading problems. This is why the fuel assembly's bow is one of the most often controlled geometrical factors during periodic fuel inspections for VVER when compared e.g. to on-site fuel rod gap measurements or other instrumental measurements performed on-site. Our proposed screening method uses existing video records for fuel inspection. We establish video frames normalization and aggregation for the purposes of bow measurement. The whole process is done by digital image processing algorithms which analyze rotations of video frames, extract angles whose source is the fuel set torsion, and reconstruct torsion schema. This approach provides results comparable to the commonly utilized method. We tested this new approach in real operation on 19 fuel assemblies with different campaign numbers and designs, where the average deviation from other methods was less than 2 % on average. Due to the fact, that the method has not yet been validated during full scale measurements of the fuel inspection, the preliminary results stand for that we recommend this method as a complementary part of standard bow measurement procedures to increase measurement robustness, lower time consumption and preserve or increase accuracy. After completed validation it is expected that the proposed method allows standalone fuel assembly bow measurements.

  • The purposes of this study were to examine whether aquatic exercise has influence on the neuroplasticity and vestibulo-motor function in diffuse brain injury rats. 80 Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to four groups; Group I: control group (n=20), Group II: aquatic exercise (n=20), Group III: treadmill exercise with change of velocity and inclination (n=20), Group IV: simple treadmill exercise (n=20). And we applied exercise each groups for 3 weeks except Group I. Before the rats were sacrificed to identify immunohistochemistry study at each time of measurement day, Rota-Rod test was given to assess changes in vestibulomotor function. then, the immunohistochemistry study of GAP-43 in discrete regions of the rat brain was performed to measure changes in neuroplasticity. The results demonstrate that aquatic exercise group is more effective than other groups. expression of GAP-43 and vestibulo-motor function were increased most in aquatic exercise group. Therefore, this study suggest that aquatic exercise may effective therapeutic approach to increase neuroplasticity and vestibulo-motor function in traumatic brain injury.
