  • The properties of unseen high-redshift sources (and sinks) are encoded in the 3D structure of the cosmic 21-cm signal. Here I introduce a flexible parametrization for high-z galaxies' properties, including their star formation rates, ionizing escape fraction and their evolution with the mass of the host dark matter halos. With this parametrization, I self-consistently calculate the corresponding 21-cm signal during reionization and the cosmic dawn. Using a Monte Carlo Markov Chain sampler of 3D simulations, 21CMMC, I demonstrate how combining high-z luminosity functions with a mock 21-cm signal can break degeneracies, resulting in ~ percent level constraints on early universe astrophysics.

  • Recent studies of galaxy clusters have shown that the galaxy clusters in dense environment tend to have lower star formation rate in local universe with z < 1. However, this correlation is not significant in galaxy clusters with z > 1. The study of galaxy clusters around z=1 can yield insight into cosmological galaxy evolution. Nevertheless, the identification of galaxy clusters beyond the scope of immediate local universe requires wide field data in optical and near-infrared bands. By incorporating data from Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey(CFHTLS) and Infrared Medium-Deep Survey(IMS), the photometric redshifts of galaxies in CFHTLS W2 field were calculated. Using spatial distribution and photometric redshifts, the galaxies in the field were divided into redshift bins. The image of each redshift bin was analyzed by measuring the number density within proper distance of 1Mpc. By comparing high density regions in consecutive redshift bins, we identified the cluster candidates and mapped the large-scale structure within the CFHTLS W2 field.

  • We investigate the molecular and atomic gas properties of 20 Virgo cluster spiral galaxies by comparing with optical properties to assess the effect of the Virgo environment on the interstellar media of the Virgo disks. CO maps from FCRAO On-The-Fly (OTF) mapping survey and HI maps from VIVA (VLA Imaging of Virgo spirals in Atomic gas) are shown, and radial properties of molecular and atomic gas are compared. H2 deficiency along with HI is investigated, and gas evolution history of the Virgo cluster spirals is also examined.

  • In understanding "cooling flow" problem and the galaxy-SMBH co-evolution, AGN feedback is considered as one of the most important phenomena. Among various AGN feedback phenomena, X-ray cavities are particularly useful for studying AGN feedback over 10 kpc scales, as the origin of X-ray cavities is believed to be related to radio jet from AGN. For a comprehensive study of X-ray cavities, we collect all available diffuse X-ray data of galaxies in various galaxy environments, ranging from field galaxies to galaxy clusters, using the Chandra X-ray data archive. As a result we build up a sample of 87 targets showing enough X-ray photons to perform the analysis. Using modeling and unsharp masking techniques, we detected X-ray cavities and measured their physical properties (i.e., cavity size) for the 49 targets. Here, we present X-ray cavity properties and discuss environmental effects.

  • The central regions of barred-spiral galaxies contain interesting gaseous structures such as dust lanes located at the leading side of the bar and nuclear rings that are sites of intense star formation. Our previous studies showed how gas structures form under the influence of a non-axisymmetric bar potential and temporal/spatial behavior of the star formation in nuclear rings. However, previous works were limited to 2-dimensional infinitesimally-thin, unmagnetized and isothermal disks. To study effects of cooling/heating, vertical motions of gas structures and magnetic field, we use Mesh-Free magneto-hydrodynamic simulation code GIZMO. We find that temporal variations of the star formation rates in the nuclear ring in the three-dimensional model are overall similar those in the previous two-dimensional results, although the former shows more violent small-scale fluctuations near the early primary peak. We will present our recent results about evolution of gaseous structures and star formation rate compare with results of previous studies.

  • ASTRO-F is the next generation Japanese infrared space mission of the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science. ASTRO-F will be dedicated to an All Sky Survey in the far-infrared in 4 bands from 50-200microns with 2 additional mid-infrared bands at 9microns and 20microns. This will be the first all sky survey in the infrared since the ground breaking IRAS mission almost 20 years ago and the first ever survey at 170microns. The All Sky Survey should detect 10's of millions of sources in the far-infrared bands most of which will be dusty luminous and ultra-luminous star forming galaxies, with as many as half lying at redshifts greater than unity. In this contribution, the ASTRO-F mission and its objectives are reviewed and many of the mission expectations are discussed.

  • The galaxy cluster is a good laboratory to test the cosmological model as well as the evolution of galaxies in the dense region. However the lack of wide and deep near-IR datasets has prevented to identify galaxy clusters at z>1. Here we merge a wide, deep near-IR datasets of UKIDSS DXS (J and K bands) and IMS (J band) with the CFHT Legacy Survey (CFHTLS) ugriz catalogue to detect galaxy clusters. We identify candidate galaxy clusters at z>0.8, where the near-IR dataset plays an important role to detect galaxies efficiently. The cluster mass is also estimated based on the cluster richness and the semi-analytical cosmological simulation.

  • K-SIM (KASI-Simulation) research project is dedicated to develop new numerical techniques in order to theoretically study galaxy formation and evolution. As the first step of the K-SIM, to model tidal stripping of galaxies with a very high resolution in a fully cosmological context, we invented the Galaxy Replacement Technique (GRT) that is very efficient and fast. The high resolution allows us to accurately resolve the tidal stripping process and well describe the formation of ultra-low surface brightness features in the galaxy cluster (㎶ < 32 mag/arcsec^2), such as the intra-cluster light, shells and tidal streams. I'll introduce how the GRT is designed and which science topics in low-surface brightness regime can be visited using the GRT.

  • In barred galaxies, gaseous structures such a nuclear ring and dust lanes are formed by a non-axisymmetric stellar bar potential, and the evolution of the stellar bar is influenced by mass inflows to the center and central star formation. To study how the presence of the gas affects the evolution of the stellar bar, we use the mesh-free hydrodynamics code GIZMO and run fully self-consistent three-dimensional simulations. To explore the evolution with differing initial conditions, we vary the fraction of the gas and stability of initial disks. In cases when the initial disk is stable with Q=1.2, the bar strength in the model with 5% gas is weaker than that in the gas-free model, while the bar with 10% gas does not form a bar. This suggests that the gaseous component is unfavorable to the bar formation dynamically. On the other hand, in models with relatively unstable disk with Q=1.0, the presence of gas helps form a bar: the bar forms more rapidly and strongly as the gas fraction increases. This is because the unable disks form stars vigorously, which in turn cools down the stellar disk by adding newly-created stars with low velocity dispersion. However, the central mass concentration also quickly increases as the bar grows in these unstable models, resulting in fast bar dissolution in gas rich models. We will discuss our results in comparison with previous work.

  • We present wide-field multiband photometry of globular cluster (GC) systems toward the central region of the Fornax cluster of galaxies, including NGC 1399, NGC 1404, and NGC 1387. Observation was carried out through four optical passbands (U, B, V, and I) with the Mosaic II CCD imager mounted on the 4-m Blanco telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO). This marks one of the widest U-band photometric studies on GC systems. GC candidates are selected among point sources based on their two color diagrams together with a magnitude cut. We investigate the radial variation of color distributions for the GC systems, focusing on the fundamental parameters that characterize bimodal distributions; the number ratio between blue and red GCs, the mean colors of the groups, and their color dispersions. We discuss the implication of our result regarding the origin of GC color bimodality.
