(1) The correlation between the mass of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and the properties of their host galaxies suggests that SMBHs and host galaxies are closely linked in their formation and evolution. While the exact origin of their relationship is still under debate, theoretical models often invoke feedback from active galactic nuclei as a crucial mechanism for establishing the BH-host correlation. In the first part of my talk, I will present possible observational biases in the BH-host relation, and methods to overcome these biases. I will also report our efforts to find observational sign of the AGN feedback in high-z young luminous AGNs. (2) While intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) is thought be cosmologically important class to understand the link between stellar mass black holes and SMBHs, it is extremely rare in the present-day Universe. In the second part of this talk, I will report a Gemini/GMOS-N IFU study of an ultraluminous X-ray source in NGC 5252, which is a possible candidate of an off-nuclear non-stellar black hole.
We present the detailed image decomposition of Hubble Space Telescope archival images for 235 nearby (z < 0.35) unobscured type 1 AGNs. It allows us to perform robust measurements of host galaxy properties and AGN luminosity contribution. We examine how the host properties correlate with AGN properties. Broad line type 1 and radio-loud AGNs are hosted preferentially by early type galaxies. Narrow line type 1 AGNs show a low fraction of tidal interaction, that might suggest the secular evolution may play an important role for triggering AGN activity, while the fraction of merging hosts is rather higher in luminous AGNs. We compare the nucleus luminosity and bulge luminosity and find that either our sample might have a smaller zero point in the M(BH)-L(bulge) relation (i.e. less massive black hole at a given bulge luminosity) relation compared to the normal galaxies or Eddington ratio of our sample could be systematically overestimated.
The correlation between black hole mass and galaxy stellar velocity dispersion gives an important clue on the black hole growth and galaxy evolution. In the case of AGN, however, it is extremely difficult to measure stellar velocity dispersions in the optical spectra since AGN continuum dilutes stellar absorption features. In contrast, stellar velocity dispersions of active galaxies can be measured in the near-IR, where AGN-to-star flux ratio is much smaller, particularly with the laser-guide-star adaptive optics. However, it is crucial to test whether the stellar velocity dispersion measured from the near-IR spectra is consistent with that measured from the optical spectra. Using the TripleSpec at the Palomar 5-m Telescope, we obtained high quality spectra ranging from 1 to 2.4 micron for a sample of 35 nearby galaxies, for which dynamical black hole masses and optical stellar velocity dispersion measurements are available, in order to calibrate the stellar velocity dispersion in the near-IR. In this poster, we present the initial results based on 10 galaxies, with the stellar velocity dispersion measured in the H-band.
Recent observational studies suggest that the environmental effects can shape the evolution of galaxies in clusters. In an attempt to better understand this process, we perform idealized radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of RAM pressure stripping on star-forming galaxies using RAMSES-RT. We find that extended HI disks are easily stripped by moderate ICM winds, while there is no significant decrease in the total mass of molecular gas. RAM pressure tends to compress the molecular gas, leading to enhanced star formation especially when the gaseous disk is hit by edge-on winds. On the other hand, strong ICM winds that are expected to operate at the centre of clusters strip both HI and molecular gas from the galaxy. Interestingly, we find that the strong ICM winds can induce the formation of relatively dense (~1H/cc) HI gas clouds at a distance from the disk.

Galactic fly-by interactions are believed to be far more frequent than direct mergers, acting as hidden drivers of galaxy evolution. We perform a tree-particle-mesh code GOTPM, and investigate the statistical properties of the fly-by interactions as functions of halo masses and ambient environments. Based on the total energy of the two halos of interest, impulsive fly-by pairs are identified from eventual merger candidates. We find three obvious results as follows: (1) Halos in the high-dense environment experience more frequent mergers and fly-by encounters than those in the low-dense region; (2) In the massive halos, both merger and fly-by fractions evolve more dramatically with time than those in dwarfs; and (3) The fly-by fraction decreases as approaching the present epoch, in contrast to the increase of the merger fraction.
The YONSEI (YOnsei Nearby Supernova Evolution Investigation) project is to investigate the luminosity evolution of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) by using their early-type host galaxies. As a part of this project, we have constructed our own SN catalogue. SALT2 and MLCS2k2 light-curve fitters implemented in SNANA package are employed to analyze the light-curve data. The catalogue provides a rest-frame peak magnitude in B-band or distance modulus, a light-curve shape parameter, and a color or an extinction value of each SN in the redshift range from 0.01 to 1.4. In this poster, we will present our progress in the detailed systematic tests for this catalogue.
In this talk, we will review extragalactic science cases with NISS and SPHEREx. With its capability to perform a low resolution spectroscopy over a wide area, NISS and SPHEREx can provide valuable information about the evolution of spectral shapes of galaxies in different environments over cosmic history. This talk will focus on the cases for the studies that are closely related to the galaxy evolution and formation.
Galaxy transition from star-forming to quiescent, accompanied with morphology transformation, is one of the key unresolved issues in extragalactic astronomy. Although several environmental mechanisms have been proposed, a deeper understanding of the impact of environment on galaxy transition still requires much exploration. My Ph.D. thesis focuses on which environmental mechanisms are primarily responsible for galaxy transition in different environments and looks at what happens during the transition phase using multi-wavelength photometric/spectroscopic data, from UV to mid-infrared (MIR), derived from several large surveys (GALEX, SDSS, and WISE) and our GMOS-North IFU observations. Our multi-wavelength approach provides new insights into the *late* stages of galaxy transition with a definition of the MIR green valley different from the optical green valley. I will present highlights from three areas in my thesis. First, through an in-depth study of environmental dependence of various properties of galaxies in a nearby supercluster A2199 (Lee et al. 2015), we found that the star formation of galaxies is quenched before the galaxies enter the MIR green valley, which is driven mainly by strangulation. Then, the morphological transformation from late- to early-type galaxies occurs in the MIR green valley. The main environmental mechanisms for the morphological transformation are galaxy-galaxy mergers and interactions that are likely to happen in high-density regions such as galaxy groups/clusters. After the transformation, early-type MIR green valley galaxies keep the memory of their last star formation for several Gyr until they move on to the next stage for completely quiescent galaxies. Second, compact groups (CGs) of galaxies are the most favorable environments for galaxy interactions. We studied MIR properties of galaxies in CGs and their environmental dependence (Lee et al. 2017), using a sample of 670 CGs identified using a friends-of-friends algorithms. We found that MIR [3.4]-[12] colors of CG galaxies are, on average, bluer than those of cluster galaxies. As CGs are located in denser regions, they tend to have larger early-type galaxy fractions and bluer MIR color galaxies. These trends can also be seen for neighboring galaxies around CGs. However, CG members always have larger early-type fractions and bluer MIR colors than their neighboring galaxies. These results suggest that galaxy evolution is faster in CGs than in other environments and that CGs are likely to be the best place for pre-processing. Third, post-starburst galaxies (PSBs) are an ideal laboratory to investigate the details of the transition phase. Their spectra reveal a phase of vigorous star formation activity, which is abruptly ended within the last 1 Gyr. Numerical simulations predict that the starburst, and thus the current A-type stellar population, should be localized within the galaxy's center (< kpc). Yet our GMOS IFU observations show otherwise; all five PSBs in our sample have Hdelta absorption line profiles that extend well beyond the central kpc. Most interestingly, we found a negative correlation between the Hdelta gradient slopes and the fractions of the stellar mass produced during the starburst, suggesting that stronger starbursts are more centrally-concentrated. I will discuss the results in relation with the origin of PSBs.

We study the angular correlation function of bright ($K_s{\leq}19.5$) Extremely Red Objects (EROs) selected in the Subaru GTO 2$deg^2$ field. By applying the color selection criteria of $R-K_s$ > 5.0, 5.5, and 6.0, we identify 9055, 4270, and 1777 EROs, respectively. The number density is consistent with similar studies on the optical - NIR color selected red galaxies. The angular correlation functions are derived for EROs with different limiting magnitude and different $R-K_s$ color cut. When we assume that the angular correlation function $w({\theta})$ follows a form of a power-law (i.e., $w({\theta})=A{\theta}^{-{\delta}}$), the value of the amplitude A was larger for brighter EROs compared to the fainter EROs. The result suggests that the brighter, thus more massive high-redshift galaxies, are clustered more strongly compared to the less massive galaxies. Assuming that EROs have redshift distribution centered at ~ 1.1 with ${\sigma}_z=0.15$, the spatial correlation length $r_0$ of the EROs estimated from the observed angular correlation function ranges ${\sim}6-10h^{-1}Mpc$. A comparison with the clustering of dark matter halos in numerical simulation suggests that the EROs are located in most massive dark matter halos and could be progenitors of $L_{\ast}$ elliptical galaxies.

We present the results of near-infrared imaging observations of the galaxy overdensity around the z = 1.44 radio-loud active galactic nucleus (AGN) 6CE1100+3505, which was carried out with the purpose of sampling the redshifted Hα emission from the actively star-forming galaxies that could constitute the overdensity. The existence of the structure around this AGN was spectroscopically confirmed by previous grism observations which are however limited to the central region. Using the CH4Off narrow/medium-band and H broad band filters in the Wide Infrared Camera (WIRCam) on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT), we constructed a sample of objects that show a flux excess in the CH4Off band due to line emission. The emission line flux is ~ 4.9 × 10-16 erg s-1 cm-2, corresponding to a star formation rate (SFR) of ~ 50 M⊙ yr-1 for galaxies at redshifts z ~ 1.4. None of the galaxies with medium-band flux excess is located within 1 Mpc from the central AGN, and there is no evidence that the selected galaxies are associated with the proposed cluster. Along with the star formation quenching near the center that was found from the previous grism observations, the lack of extreme starbursts in the structure suggests that at z ~ 1.4, overdense regions are no longer favorable locations for vigorous star formation.
