We present an analysis of the soft X-ray emission of MRK 841 to investigate its long-term variation. The light variation of MRK 841 for three different energy bands of soft, medium, and hard values were studied. The maximum variability with a factor of 5 for about two years was confirmed at all three different bands. The light curves exhibit a gradual variation of brightness. In addition to a gradual variation, the short- term or micro variation was also confirmed with a factor of about two for all three different bands. The light variation of each band did not exhibit a correlation between them, but the flare event is strongest in the soft band. The hardness ratio for hard and soft bands shows irregular variation but there was no correlation between them. It was confirmed that there is a gradual decrease of the photon index. Results of our analysis are discussed within the framework of the accretion disk phenomenon.

It has been suggested that only the most luminous AGNs ($L{\gtrsim}10^{45}erg/s$) are triggered by galaxy mergers, while less luminous AGNs ($L{\sim}10^{43}erg/s$) are driven by other internal processes. The lack of merging features in low luminosity AGN host galaxies has been a primary argument against the idea of merger triggering of low luminosity AGNs. But a merger, especially a rather minor one, might still have played an important role in low luminosity AGNs, as minor merging features at low luminosities are more difficult to identify than major merging features. Using SNUCAM on the 1.5 m telescope at Maidanak observatory, we obtained deep optical images of NGC 7743, a barred spiral galaxy classified as a Seyfert 2 AGN with a low bolometric luminosity of $5{\times}10^{42}erg/s$. Surprisingly, we discovered a merging feature around the galaxy, which indicates past merging activity in the galaxy. This example indicates that the merging fraction of low luminosity AGNs may be much higher than previously thought, hinting at the importance of galaxy mergers even in low luminosity AGNs.

With AKARI, we carried out near-infrared spectroscopy of the nearby barred spiral galaxy, NGC 1097, categorized as Seyfert 1 with a circumnuclear starburst ring. Our observations mapped the galactic center region. As a result, we obtain the spatial distributions of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon $3.3{\mu}m$ and the aliphatic hydrocarbon $3.4-3.6{\mu}m$ emission. The former is detected from all the observed regions and the latter is enhanced near the bar connecting the ring with the nucleus. In addition, we detect absorption features due to $H_2O$ ice and CO/SiO at the ring and the galactic center, while we detect the hydrogen recombination line $Br{\alpha}$ only from the ring. Hence the observed spectra change dramatically within the central 1 kpc region.
To investigate whether the present-day active galaxies follow the same black hole mass vs. stellar velocity dispersion (MBH-$\sigma*$) relation as quiescent galaxies, we measured the velocity dispersions of a sample of local Seyfert 1 galaxies, for which black hole masses were measured via reverberation mapping. We measured stellar velocity dispersions from high S/N optical spectra centered on the Ca II triplet region (${\sim}8500^{\circ}A$), obtained at the Keck, Palomar, and Lick Observatories. For two objects, in which the Ca II triplet region was contaminated by nuclear emission, we used high-quality H-band spectra obtained with the OH-Suppressing Infrared Imaging Spectrograph and laser-guide star adaptive optics at the Keck-II Telescope. Combining our new measurements with data from the literature, we assemble a sample of 24 active galaxies with stellar velocity dispersions and reverberation MBH in the range of black hole mass 106< MBH /$M{\odot}$ < 109,toobtainthefirstreverberationmappingconstraintsontheslopeandintrinsicscatteroftheMBH- $\sigma*$ relation of active galaxies. Assuming a constant virial coefficient f for the reverberation MBH, we find a slope ${\beta}=3.55{\pm}0.60$ and the intrinsic scatter ${\sigma}int=0.43{\pm}0.08$ dex in the relation log (MBH/M${\odot}$)=$\alpha+\beta$ log(${\sigma}*$/200 km s-1), which are consistent with those found for quiescent galaxies. We derive an updated value of the virial coefficient f by finding the value which places the reverberation masses in best agreement with the MBH - $\sigma*$ relation of quiescent galaxies; using the quiescent MBH - $\sigma*$ relation determined by Gultekin et al. we find log f=0.72+0.09 (or $0.71{\pm}0.10$) with an intrinsic scatter of $0.44{\pm}0.07$ (or 0.46+0.07) dex. No correlations between f and parameters connected to the physics of accretion (such as the Eddington ratio or line-shape measurements) are found. The uncertainty of the virial coefficient remains one of the main sources of the uncertainty in black hole mass determination using reverberation mapping, and therefore also in single-epoch spectroscopic estimates of black hole masses in active galaxies.
Using high-resolution numerical simulations, we investigate the formation of gaseous substructures and mass inflow rates in barred spiral galaxies in the presence of both bar and spiral potentials. The gaseous medium is assumed to be infinitesimally-thin, isothermal, unmagnetized, and non-self-gravitating. To consider various galactic situations, we vary the pattern speed and strength of spiral arms as well as the black hole mass. We find that spiral arms with pattern speed smaller than that of the bar remove angular momentum from the gas outside corotation which transports to the bar region, making the dust lanes strong and live long. When the arm pattern speed is identical to that of the bar, on the other hand, the gas outside corotation gains angular momentum and thus moves outward, without affecting the bar region. Overall gaseous morphologies in simulations match well with observed IR images of barred spiral galaxies such as NGC 1097, when the arms and bar are in phase at the corotation radius. The presence of spiral arms increases the mass inflow rate as well, making it larger than $0.01M_{\odot}/yr$ when MBH is $4{\times}10^7M_{\odot}$, possibly explaining AGN activities in Seyfert galaxies.

Using I-band images of 35 nearby (z < 0.1) type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) obtained with Hubble Space Telescope, selected from the 70-month Swift-BAT X-ray source catalog, we investigate the photometric properties of the host galaxies. With a careful treatment of the point-spread function (PSF) model and imaging decomposition, we robustly measure the I-band brightness and the effective radius of bulges in our sample. Along with black hole (BH) mass estimates from single-epoch spectroscopic data, we present the relation between BH mass and I-band bulge luminosity (MBH-MI,bul relation) of our sample AGNs. We find that our sample lies offset from the MBH-MI,bul relation of inactive galaxies by 0.4 dex, i.e., at a given bulge luminosity, the BH mass of our sample is systematically smaller than that of inactive galaxies. We also demonstrate that the zero point offset in the MBH-MI,bul relation with respect to inactive galaxies is correlated with the Eddington ratio. Based on the Kormendy relation, we find that the mean surface brightness of ellipticals and classical bulges in our sample is comparable to that of normal galaxies, revealing that bulge brightness is not enhanced in our sample. As a result, we conclude that the deviation in the MBH-MI,bul relation from inactive galaxies is possibly because the scaling factor in the virial BH mass estimator depends on the Eddington ratio.
WIth high accretion rate and low black hole mass, narrow line seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) are an interesting sub-class of AGNs. To investigate whether NLS1s follow the same M-${\sigma}*$ relation as other AGNs, we selected a sample of 110 NLS1s at relatively low redshift z < 0.1 from SDSS DR7 by constraining the FWHM of Ha broad component, and determined their black hole masses. We measured stellar velocity dispersion of 65 objects which showed strong enough stellar lines in the SDSS spectra, while we adopted the ${\sigma}*$ measurements of 45 objects from Xiao et al. 2011. We find that NLS1s follow the M-${\sigma}*$ relation of active and inactive galaxies while there is a dependency due to the galaxy inclination, which probably cause rotational broadening of stellar absorption lines.
We present the results of near infrared (2.5-5 micron) spectroscopy of nearby luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) using AKARI. The LIRG catalog is constructed from the cross-correlation between the Infrared Astronomical Satellite and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data, and optically non-Seyfert type LIRGs are selected for main targets. We search for optically elusive active galactic nuclei (AGNs), based on the strengths of 3.3 micron polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission and dust absorption features at 3-4 micron. We investigate the hidden AGN fraction as a function of the infrared luminosity and correlation between optical and near infrared star formation indicators.
We investigate dynamical evolution of gas in barred galaxies using a high-resolution, grid-based hydrodynamic simulations on two-dimensional cylindrical geometry. Non-axisymmetric gravitational potential of the bar is represented by the Ferrers ellipsoids independent of time. Previous studies on this subject used either particle approaches or treated the bar potential in an incorrect way. The gaseous medium is assumed to be infinitesimally-thin, isothermal, unmagnetized, and initially uniform. To study the effects of various environments on the gas evolution, we vary the gas sound speed as well as the mass of a SMBH located at the center of a galaxy. An introduction of the bar potential produces bar substructure including a pair of dust lane shocks, a nuclear ring, and nuclear spirals. The sound speed affects the position and strength of the bar substructure significantly. As the sound speed increases, the dust lane shocks tend to move closer to the bar major axis, resulting in a smaller-size nuclear ring at the galactocentric radius of about 1 kpc. Nuclear spirals that develop inside a nuclear ring can persist only when either sound speed is low or in the presence of a SMBH; they would otherwise be destroyed by the ring material with eccentric orbits. The mass inflow rates of gas toward the galactic center is also found to be proportional to the sound speed. We find that the sound speed should be 15 km/s or larger if the mass inflow rate is to explain nuclear activities in Seyfert galaxies.
We observed multiple CO transition lines and the HCN(1-0) line at ~ 1" (~ 34 pc) or higher resolution toward the Seyfert 2 nucleus of M51 using the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI) and the Submillimeter Array (SMA). All the images show very similar overall molecular gas distribution; there are two discrete clouds at the eastern and western sides of the nucleus, and the western cloud exhibits an elongated distribution and velocity gradient along the radio jet. In addition, high HCN(1-0)/CO(1-0) brightness temperature ratios of about unity have been observed, especially along the radio jet, similar to those observed in shocked molecular gas in our Galaxy. This strongly indicates that the molecular gas along the jet is shocked, that the radio jet and the molecular gas are interacting, and the jet is entraining both diffuse (CO) and dense (HCN) molecular gas outwards from the circumnuclear region. This is the first clear imaging of the outflowing molecular gas entrained by the AGN jet, and showing the detailed physical status of outflowing molecular gas. Since a relatively high HCN(1-0)/CO(1-0) ratio has been observed in the high velocity wing of ultraluminous infrared galaxies, it can also be explained by a similar mechanism to those we describe here.
