  • Objectives : To obtain basic data on blood lead level and urinary level of arsenic and cadmium of children living near a petrochemical estate and a suburban area in Ulsan, Korea and to observe the trend of the changes. In the level of these metals in these children. Methods : The study subjects comprised 626 children living near a petrochemical estate and 299 children living in a suburban area of Ulsan. We analyzed the level of lead, arsenic and cadmium using atomic absorption spectrometer. Results : The mean levels of blood lead in children living near the petrochemical estate were $5.25{\mu}g/dl,\;5.24{\mu}g/dl,\;and\;7.24{\mu}g/dl$, and in the years 1997, 1999, and 2000, respectively, whereas those of children living in the suburban area were $3.81{\mu}g/dl,\;4.75{\mu}g/dl,\;and\;7.19{\mu}g/dl$ respectively. The mean levels of urinary arsenic in children living near the petrochemical estate were $4.57{\mu}g/g$ creatinine, $4.78{\mu}g/g$ creatinine, and $6.02{\mu}g/g$ creatinine in the year 1997, 1999, and 2000 respectively, whereas those of children living in suburban area were $2.35{\mu}g/g$ creatinine, $4.75{\mu}g/g$ creatinine, and $7.07{\mu}g/g$ creatinine, respectively. The mean levels of urinary cadmium in children living near the petrochemical estate were $1.15{\mu}g/g$ creatinine, $1.05{\mu}g/g$ creatinine, and $1.71{\mu}g/g$ creatinine in the year 1997, 1999, and 2000, respectively, whereas those of the children living in the suburban area were $0.74{\mu}g/g$ creatinine, $1.29{\mu}g/g$ creatinine, and $1.48{\mu}g/g$ creatinine, respectively. There were increasing trends in the level of blood lead, urinary arsenic and cadmium of children in Ulsan, and the differences in the level of these metals were disappearing between the children living in other areas year by year. Conclusions : These results suggest that the amount of exposure to lead, arsenic, and cadmium is increasing from year to year, and there is a need for periodic biological and atmospheric monitoring of these metals in Ulsan.

  • Batch and continuous cell retention cultures were carried out using tapioca hydrolysate. In batch culture, reducing sugar of about 180g/$\ell$ was almost consumed in about 36 hours, and the concentration of ethanol produced was about 84g/$\ell$ making the ethanol yield 0.48 g-ethanol/g-(reducing sugar). The final yeast concentration was 8.5${\times}$107 cells/ml(about 2.1g/$\ell$). In a total cell retention culture operated with a dilution rate of 0.18h-1, the yeast concentration, the residual reducing sugar concentration, the ethanol concentration, and the volumetric ethanol productivity were about 40g/$\ell$, about 15g/$\ell$, 81.4g/$\ell$, and 14.7g/$\ell$-h, respectively. In another cell retention culture operated with a dilution rate and a bleed ratio of 0.2h-1 and 0.14, respectively, the yeast concentration increased to 22g/$\ell$ and the ethanol concentration oscillated around 68g/$\ell$. The volumetric ethanol productivity was about 13.6g/$\ell$-h and the residual reducing sugar concentration about 12g/$\ell$ containing glucose of about 4.5g/$\ell$. According to the results of batch fermentation using the solid residue from hydrolysate filtration as the substrate, it seemed to have a certain value. Thus, development of an effective reactor system to produce ethanol from this solid residue is in need.

  • Salicylate from plant foods and histamine from animal foods have been suggested to cause various food allergic symptoms. Salicylate regarded as one of the inducing agents f3r chronic urticaria and asthma in allergic patients was studied. There is much interest about the effects of salicylate in food allergy. It it recently suggested that the intake of salicylate from foods may have contributed to chronic urticaria and asthma. The purpose of this study is to analyze the salicylate content in various foods. 153 ingredients commonly used in Korean foods were analyzed by HPLC. Among the vegetables, chard(8.22$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), soybean sprout(5.13$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), perilla lean3.03$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), Chinese cabbage(2.25$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), carrot(2.16$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), and squash(1.33$\mu\textrm{g}$/g) con-rained higher amounts of salicylate as compared to other vegetables. Among fruits, oranges(5.13$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), grapefruits(2.90$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), and plums(1.65$\mu\textrm{g}$/g) contained the most. In animal foods, almost no salicylate was found except in chocolate milk(0.32$\mu\textrm{g}$/g). It was also found in black pepper(8.2$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), coffee(can)(5.00$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), mustard(4.16$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), curry powder(3.24$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), kochujang(2.37$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), cream powder(1.19$\mu\textrm{g}$/g), brown rice(1.04$\mu\textrm{g}$/g) and sesame oil(1.00$\mu\textrm{g}$/g). All information found in this study can be used as nutritional education materials in potentially allergic people for a prudent diet plan and can also provide proper dietary guidelines for these allergic patients. • Backsulgies containing various levels of guar gum(0g, 2.5g or 5g) were ingested by ten healthy male subjects after 12-h fast. Guar backsulgies was given a time in a week a time in a week for 3 weeks with 75g glucose. The Sensory qualities of backsulgies containing guar gum powder of different levels(0g, 2.5, 5g) were also evaluated using a hedonic scoring technique. On each test day 4ml samples of venous blood were taken from the fasted subjects. Further 4ml post-prandial blood samples were taken from the subjects 30, 60, 90 and 120min after guar backsulgies had commenced. Result were as follows: Plasma glucose and insulin levels were not sifnificantly reduced according to guar gum levels in backsulgies. But plasma glucose and insulin levels of the case which ingested 5g guar backsulgies tended to be lower than those of the case which ingested 0g or 2.5g guar backsulgies. Therefore it is recommended that 5g guar backsulgies is most effective snack of diabetics. KEY WORDS: guar backsulgies plasma glucose, plasma insulin, snack.

  • The Iwasawa decomposition NAK of the Lie group G = SO0(2, 1) with a left invariant metric produces Riemannian submersions G → N\G, G → A\G, G → K\G, and G → NA\G. For each of these, we calculate the curvature of the base space and the lifting of a simple closed curve to the total space G. Especially in the first case, the base space has a constant curvature 0; the holonomy displacement along a (null-homotopic) simple closed curve in the base space is determined only by the Euclidean area of the region surrounded by the curve.

  • The Immunoglobulin $IgG_1$ and $IgG_2$ isotype immune responses of domestic ruminants and mice to Cowdria. ruminantium live infection or by immunization with inactivated organisms were determined by the enzyme linked immunosorbent assay and Western blotting. Immunization of goats with inactivated elementary bodies (IEBs) led to a predominant $IgG_1$ isotype response. This indicated that a Th2 response was induced. After challenge, the IgG isotype responses were mixed whereby both $IgG_1$ and $IgG_2$ antibodies were detected. Two goats that survived virulent challenge had a predominant $IgG_2$ isotype response. In cattle live infection by natur l challenge or experiment led to a predominant $IgG_1$ isotype response. Immunization of cattle with IEBs however led to mixed IgG responses characterized by similar $IgG_1$ and $IgG_2$ ratios. In the mouse live infection led to a predominant $IgG_2$ isotype response. This indicated the mouse developed a true Th1 type cell mediated immune response when inoculated with live organisms. Immunization with inactivated organisms on the other hand led to a dominant $IgG_1$ response. It is evident from this work that the immune responses of ruminants and mice to C. ruminantium are different and that using mice as the experimental model for immune responses to Cowdria ruminantium. is not the appropriate.

  • A Monokaryotic strain G8M without clamp connections was isolated from germinated basidiospore that was obtained from cultivated fruit body. Strain G8M was used as a tester isolate for 'dikaryon-monokaryon mating'(di-mon mating) with the strains of Ganoderma lucidum, G6 and G35(Korean wild strains), G3(Taiwan), G4(Canada), G15(America), G. oregonense G24, G. resinaceum G28, G. oerstedii G23, and G. subamboinense G29. Isolate G8M was compatible to Korean strains G6 and G35, but was incompatible to foreign strains G3, G4, or G15. Compatible reactions between strains were readily observed macroscopically. Clear barrage lines formed between incompatible strains. These clear lines were not apparent in compatible di-mon matings. The Korean strains were morphologically distinct; they did not form any chlamydospores, and stopped growth at $35^{\circ}C$. The strains of G. lucidum from Korea may be considered as different species from Taiwan, Canadian and American cultures.

  • A high xylitol producing yeast was isolated from the sludge of xylose manufacturing factory and then identified as Candida tropicalis DS-72 according to physiological properties. The strain was able to produce xylitol in a high concentration up to 72g/l from 100g/l xylose in 32 hours. Medium optimization for xylitol production by C. tropicalis DS-72 was performed. Effect of various nitrogen sources on xylitol production was investigated. Of nitrogenous compounds, yeast extract was the most suitable organic nitrogen nutrient for the enhancement of xylitol production. However, inorganic nitrogen resulted in a low cell concentration and did not produce xylitol. Effect of inorganic salts such as KH$_{2}$PO$_{4}$, and MgSO$_{4}$, 7H$_{2}$O on xylitol production was also studied. Optimal medium was selected as xylose 100g/l, yeast extract 10g/l, KH$_{2}$PO$_{4}$, 5 g/l and MgSO$_{4}$, 7H$_{2}$O 0.2 g/l. Xylitol of 88 g/l was produced from 100 g/l xylose in 30 hours using the optimal medium in a flask. In a fermentor, a fed-batch culture with 300g/l xylose was carried out. A final xylitol concentration of 240 g/l in the culture could be obtained in 43 hours of culture time by maintaining the high level of dissolved oxygen during growth phase and limiting the dissolved oxygen in the same culture during production phase. This result corresponded to a xylitol yield of 80% and a xylitol productivity of 5.58 g/1-h.

  • Chung and et al. ([2].1991) introduced a new concept of a manifold, denoted by $^{\ast}g-SEX_n$, in Einstein's n-dimensional $^{\ast}g$-unified field theory. The manifold $^{\ast}g-SEX_n$ is a generalized n-dimensional Riemannian manifold on which the differential geometric structure is imposed by the unified field tensor $^{\ast}g^{\lambda \nu}$ through the SE-connection which is both Einstein and semi-symmetric. In this paper, they proved a necessary and sufficient condition for the unique existence of SE-connection and sufficient condition for the unique existence of SE-connection and presented a beautiful and surveyable tensorial representation of the SE-connection in terms of the tensor $^{\ast}g^{\lambda \nu}$. Recently, Chung and et al.([3],1998) obtained a concise tensorial representation of SE-curvature tensor defined by the SE-connection of $^{\ast}g-SEX_n$ and proved deveral identities involving it. This paper is a direct continuations of [3]. In this paper we derive surveyable tensorial representations of constracted curvature tensors of $^{\ast}g-SEX_n$ and prove several generalized identities involving them. In particular, the first variation of the generalized Bianchi's identity in $^{\ast}g-SEX_n$, proved in theorem (2.10a), has a great deal of useful physical applications.

  • The resistant dextrin NUTRIOSE$^{(R)}$, developed from starch, is expected to act as a prebiotic. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of NUTRIOSE$^{(R)}$ on cecal parameters, short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) concentrations, and fecal excretion in rats. In an initial experiment, twenty-four male Fischer F344 rats were randomly assigned to one of the following four treatments for 14 days: G0 (control diet), G2.5 (control diet+2.5% of dextrin), G5 (control diet + 5% of dextrin), and G10 (control diet + 10% of dextrin). After 14 days, total cecal weight, cecal content, and cecal wall weight were significantly increased in G5 and G10 compared to G0. At the same time, cecal pH was significantly lower in G10 compared to G0. Total SCFA concentration was significantly higher in G10 than in G5, G2.5, and G0, and significantly higher in G5 than in G0. Acetate, butyrate, and propionate concentrations were significantly increased in G5 and G10 compared to the controls. In a second trial based on a similar design, eighteen male Fischer F344 rats were treated with a control diet supplemented with 5% of dextrin or 5% of fructo-oligosaccharide. The results obtained with NUTRIOSE$^{(R)}$ were similar to those obtained with the fructo-oligosaccharide. In a third experiment, two groups of 5 Fischer F344 rats were orally treated with 100 and 1,000 mg/kg NUTRIOSE$^{(R)}$, respectively, and from 18% to 25% of the dextrin was excreted in the feces. The results of these three studies show that the consumption of NUTRIOSE$^{(R)}$, by its effects on total cecal weight, cecal content, cecal wall weight, pH, and SCFA production, could induce healthy benefits since these effects are reported to be prebiotic effects.
