  • Multi-layer neural networks with error back-propagation algorithm have a great potential for identifying nonlinear systems with unknown characteristics. However, because they have a demerit that the speed of convergence is too slow, various methods for improving the training characteristics of backpropagition networks have been proposed. In this paper, a fuzzy division method is proposed to improve the convergence speed, which can find out an effective fuzzy division by the tuning of membership function and independently train each neural network after dividing the network model into several parts. In the simulations, the proposed method showed that the optimal fuzzy partitions could be found from the arbitray initial ones and that the convergence speed was faster than the traditional method without the fuzzy division.

  • We present a method to modify the recognition of neural networks by the fuzzy inference in a handwritten digit recognition with large deformations, and we verified the method by the experiment. The neural networks take long time in learning and recognize 100% on the learning pattern. But the neural networks don't show a good recognition on the testing pattern. So, we apply the modified method as the fuzzy inference. As a result, the recognition and false recognition of neural networks was improved 90.2% and 9.8% respectively at 89.6% and 10.4% initially. This approach decreased especially the false recognition on digit 3, 5. We used the density of digit to extract the fuzzy membership function in this experiment. But, because the handwritten digit have varified input patterns, we will get a better recognition by extracting varifed characteristics and applying the composite fuzzy inference. We also propose the application of fuzzy inference on matching the input pattern, than applying strictly the fuzzy inference.

  • In this paper, we propose a new architecture of Self-Organizing Fuzzy Polynomial Neural Networks (SOFPNN) that is based on a genetically optimized multilayer perceptron with fuzzy polynomial neurons (FPNs) and discuss its comprehensive design methodology involving mechanisms of genetic optimization, especially genetic algorithms (GAs). The proposed SOFPNN gives rise to a structurally optimized structure and comes with a substantial level of flexibility in comparison to the one we encounter in conventional SOFPNNs. The design procedure applied in the construction of each layer of a SOFPNN deals with its structural optimization involving the selection of preferred nodes (or FPNs) with specific local characteristics (such as the number of input variables, the order of the polynomial of the consequent part of fuzzy rules, and a collection of the specific subset of input variables) and addresses specific aspects of parametric optimization. Through the consecutive process of such structural and parametric optimization, an optimized and flexible fuzzy neural network is generated in a dynamic fashion. To evaluate the performance of the genetically optimized SOFPNN, the model is experimented with using two time series data(gas furnace and chaotic time series), A comparative analysis reveals that the proposed SOFPNN exhibits higher accuracy and superb predictive capability in comparison to some previous models available in the literatures.

  • A neural optimization network is designed to solve the collsion-free inverse kinematics problem for redundant robot manipulators under the constraints of joint limits, maximum velocities and maximum accelerations. And the fuzzy rules are proposed to determine the weightings of neural optimization networks to avoid the collision between robot manipulator and obstacles. The inputs of fuzzy rules are the resultant distance, change of the distance and sum of the changes. And the output of fuzzy rules is defined as the capability of collision avoidance of joint differential motion. The weightings of neural optimization networks are adjusted according to the capability of collision avoidance of each joint. To show the validities of the proposed method computer simulation results are illustrated for the redundant robot with three degrees of freedom,

  • In this paper, we introduce a new Fuzzy Polynomial Neural Networks (FPNNS)-like structure whose neuron is based on the Fuzzy Set-based Fuzzy Inference System (FS-FIS) and is different from that of FPNNS based on the Fuzzy relation-based Fuzzy Inference System (FR-FIS) and discuss the ability of the new FPNNS-like structure named Fuzzy Set-based Polynomial Neural Networks (FSPNN). The premise parts of their fuzzy rules are not identical, while the consequent parts of the both Networks (such as FPNN and FSPNN) are identical. This difference results from the angle of a viewpoint of partition of input space of system. In other word, from a point of view of FS-FIS, the input variables are mutually independent under input space of system, while from a viewpoint of FR-FIS they are related each other. The proposed design procedure for networks architecture involves the selection of appropriate nodes with specific local characteristics such as the number of input variables, the order of the polynomial that is constant, linear, quadratic, or modified quadratic functions being viewed as the consequent part of fuzzy rules, and a collection of the specific subset of input variables. On the parameter optimization phase, we adopt Information Granulation (IC) based on HCM clustering algorithm and a standard least square method-based learning. Through the consecutive process of such structural and parametric optimization, an optimized and flexible fuzzy neural network is generated in a dynamic fashion. To evaluate the performance of the genetically optimized FSPNN (gFSPNN), the model is experimented with using the time series dataset of gas furnace process.

  • This paper presents a fuzzy inference-based reinforcement learning algorithm of dynamci recurrent neural networks, which is very similar to the psychological learning method of higher animals. By useing the fuzzy inference technique the linguistic and concetional expressions have an effect on the controller's action indirectly, which is shown in human's behavior. The intervlas of fuzzy membership functions are found optimally by genetic algorithms. And using recurrent neural networks composed of dynamic neurons as action-generation networks, past state as well as current state is considered to make an action in dynamical environment. We show the validity of the proposed learning algorithm by applying it to the inverted pendulum control problem.

  • In this study, a new architecture and comprehensive design methodology of genetically optimized Multi-layer Fuzzy Neural Networks (gMFNN) are introduced and a series of numeric experiments are carried out. The gMFNN architecture results from a synergistic usage of the hybrid system generated by combining Fuzzy Neural Networks (FNN) with Polynomial Neural Networks (PNN), FNN contributes to the formation of the premise part of the overall network structure of the gMFNN. The consequence part of the gMFNN is designed using PNN.

  • Recently, fuzzy and neural network techniques have been successfully applied to control of complex and ill-defined system in a wide variety of areas, such as robot, water purification, automatic train operation system and automatic container crane operation system, etc. In this paper, we present a neuro-fuzzy controller which unifies both fuzzy logic and multi-layered feedforward neural networks. Fuzzy logic provides a means for converting linguistic control knowledge into control actions. On the other hand, feedforward neural networks provide salient features, such as learning and parallelism. In the proposed neuro-fuzzy controller, the parameters of membership functions in the antecedent part of fuzzy inference rules are identified by using the error backpropagation algorithm as a learning rule, while the coefficients of the linear combination of input variables in the consequent part are determined by using the least square estimation method. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed controller is verified through computer simulation of an inverted pendulum system.

  • In this paper, the neuro-fuzzy inferene system for the effective object recognition is studied. The proposed neuro-fuzzy inference system combines learning capability of neural network with inference process of fuzzy theory, and the system executes the fuzzy inference by neural network automatically. The proposed system consists of the antecedence neural network, the consequent neural network, and the fuzzy operational part, For dissolving the ambiguity of recognition due to input variance in the neuro-fuzzy inference system, the antecedence’s fuzzy proposition of the inference rules are automatically produced by error back propagation learining rule. Therefore, when the fuzzy inference is made, the shape of membership functions os adaptively modified according to the variation. The antecedence neural netwerk constructs a separated MNN(Model Classification Neural Network)and LNN(Line segment Classification Neural Networks)for dissolving the degradation of recognition rate. The antecedence neural network can overcome the limitation of boundary decisoion characteristics of nrural network due to the similarity of extracted features. The increased recognition rate is gained by the consequent neural network which is designed to learn inference rules for the effective system output.
