Mobile Rich Media Technologies: Current Status and Future Directions

  • Demand for rich media services is rapidly increasing and, as a result, several technologies are competing to deliver rich media services to mobile, resource-constrained devices. In this paper, we explore the existing rich media technologies and analyze their key features. In addition, in order to accommodate the new requirements introduced by emerging service models, such as service convergence, these technologies must evolve from their current status. We examine how the community intends to achieve this.

VLC4WoT : Visible Light Communication for Web of Things

  • Recently, new devices have been developed for the Internet of Things concept. The devices commonly use RF (Radio Frequency) based wireless communication. With the increase in the number of devices, the space allocated for the radio frequency band in wireless communication fills rapidly. Visible Light Communication (VLC) is an alternative, secure and economical communication technology that uses light instead of radio frequencies. While Web of Things (WoT) is the adaptation of the experience and knowledge acquired from the web into the internet of things ecosystems. By combining these two technologies, the development of the Visible Light Communication for Web of Things (VLC4WoT) system, which can use VLC and WoT technologies, has been our motivation. In our study, microcontroller control circuit was created for VLC4WoT system. Control of the circuits over the internet was performed. VLC based receiver and transmitter units have been developed for wireless communication. Web based interface was created for control. The test apparatus consisting of four objects with four outputs and a transfer unit was carried out. In this test, communication was achieved successfully. It was presented in the study that VLC can be used in the web of things architecture. In the future, it is envisaged to use this system as a safe and economical system in indoor environments.

  • With the expansion of the Internet population, the online market is achieving a rapid growth and the size of the Internet advertisement market is increasing at a high rate. Different from passive types of information transmission, online media allows active two way communication thanks to communication and network technologies, so they can ascertain the effects of advertisement and users' response immediately. Rich media refer to such new advertisement techniques on the Internet, and are expected to lead the future Internet advertisement market. Thus, the present study purposed to analyze the visual expression elements of rich media advertisements in order to understand and enhance the effects of rich media advertisements with higher interactivity than existing Internet advertisements, and to propose guidelines for applying unique designs for the promotion of businesses and organizations and the provision of effective information to users.

The influences of boredom proneness, public self-consciousness, and dressing style on internet shopping (지루함, 공적 자의식, 스타일 지향성이 인터넷 구매에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the influences of psychological variables and fashion-related psychological variables on purchasing fashion items on the Internet. Boredom proneness and public self-consciousness were selected as psychological variables, and dressing style was selected as a fashion-related psychological variable. It was hypothesized that boredom proneness and public self-consciousness not only influence the purchasing frequency of fashion items on the Internet directly, but also indirectly through dressing style. Data were gathered by surveying university students in Seoul using convenience sampling. Two hundred and eighty-six questionnaires were used in the statistical analysis. SPSS was used for exploratory factor analysis, and AMOS was used for hypothesized relationship testing. The factor analysis of boredom proneness revealed five dimensions, "helplessness," "affective response," "lack of internal stimulation," "lack of external stimulation," and "perception of time." The factor analysis of public self-consciousness revealed two dimensions, "appearance-consciousness" and "style-consciousness," and the factor analysis of dressing style revealed one dimension. The overall fit of the hypothesized model suggests that the model fits the data well. The hypothesized relationship test proved that boredom proneness and public self-consciousness influence the purchasing frequency of fashion items on the Internet indirectly through dressing style. The results implicate effective strategies for Internet shopping malls and suggestions for future study.

  • This research is about the Implementation of Remote Machine Health Monitoring System using Internet. This research will help users in the un-installed office to save a lot of cost and time from checking and managing machines' condition installed in the factory. We have made an experiment and developed the application program and the monitoring terminal which can monitor the machine's condition. This research will contribute to the development of internet and remote instrumentation engineering in the future. Finally the performance of the proposed system was evaluated through experiments, it showed the good performance and the possibility of commercialization.

An Analysis of Housing Information on Internet Provided by U. S. University CES (미국대학의 Cooperative Extension Service가 제공하는 Internet상의 주생활정보 분석)

  • As a way to serve housing information providing on internet will be a useful method in the near future in Korea. This study was planned to review the housing information on internet network which provided by U. S. .University CES(cooperative extension service) Comparative analysis was used as a Research method in terms of contents and items about housing information on internet provided by U. S. university CES during two weeks each in August 1997 and July 1998. Findings are as follows; Universities providing housing information and information items had been remarkably increased during one year since August 1997. Most of housing informations except one university CES were free to use in 1997 but three university CES among 12 universities showed only the title of items with charge amounts in 1998. Informations about 'Housing Management' and 'Environment' items were the large parts of the housing information in 1997. In 1998. 'Environment' items were remarkably increased. Items bout insects and mildew removing were large portion of the 'Housing Management'. Items about energy saving water and air quality were large portion of the 'Environment' These findings will be useful to develop items of housing information on internet network with Korean language which should be compensated by the survey research.

An Emission-Aware Day-Ahead Power Scheduling System for Internet of Energy

  • As a subset of the Internet of Things, the Internet of Energy (IoE) is expected to tackle the problems faced by the current smart grid framework. Notably, the conventional day-ahead power scheduling of the smart grid should be redesigned in the IoE architecture to take into consideration the intermittence of scattered renewable generations, large amounts of power consumption data, and the uncertainty of the arrival time of electric vehicles (EVs). Accordingly, a day-ahead power scheduling system for the future IoE is proposed in this research to maximize the usage of distributed renewables and reduce carbon emission caused by the traditional power generation. Meanwhile, flexible charging mechanism of EVs is employed to provide preferred charging options for moving EVs and flatten the load profile simultaneously. The simulation results revealed that the proposed power scheduling mechanism not only achieves emission reduction and balances power load and supply effectively, but also fits each individual EV user's preference.

  • Internet became the most popular network in spite of its weakness in realtime multimedia service. Many experts believe that the Internet has the potential to become the main multimedia distribution network of the near future. Currently, it does not provide any (BoS guarantees and, even when it does, guaranteed quality delivery of video may turn out to be too expensive. Unavoidable packet losses and delay jitter caused by congestion in a best effort delivery environment require use of intelligent transport techniques for effective video delivery. According to market needs of better quality of service (QoS) fur realtime multimedia services over Internet, they have been standardizing RSVP, IntServ, and DiffServ This paper combines the benefits of QoS mechanisms such as RSVP/IntServ with scalable video encoding. We propose that more important bit stream is given more priority such that limited network resources are guaranteed far the stream. Various prioritizing approaches are proposed and compared to normal approach by using Network Simulator. The calculated QoS parameters such as packet loss rate are used to calculate degree of degradation in video quality. In this Paper, proposed methods can be implemented adaptively to Von protocol, such as H.323, SIP.

Exploring the Traits of Popular Channels of Afreeca TV (Afreeca TV의 인기 채널 특징 탐구)

  • This study explores the popular channels of Afreeca TV, which is the most famous Internet Broadcasting Service in South Korea currently. Due to the developments of technology, the era has come that ordinary people are able to do broadcasting individually with some equipment. Unlike traditional media, Internet Broadcasting does not have a concept of ratings, and Afreeca TV utilizes the specific formula for counting popular channels. In this situation, this study analyzes the popular channels on Afreeca TV by 1) Gender 2) Profile Photo 3) Genre 4) Enthusiast 5) Fanclub 6) Supporter 7) Amount of Airtime 8) Cumulative Audience, and then it reveals the traits of those popular channels. Then, it further discusses the future of the Internet broadcasting.

A Study on the Determinants of Consumer Trust toward Internet-Only Banks (인터넷전문은행의 신뢰 결정요인 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the level of trust by financial consumers and attempt to investigate the determinants that influence consumer trust in internet-only banks. For this aim, I conducted an empirical study and the survey results was used to test a structural equation model that analyzed the financial consumer trust and estimated the level of trust for internet-only banks. As a result of the analysis, the three most effective determinants of trust were security, convenience and benefit. Also, the level of financial consumer trust for the internet-only banks, based on the three factors, was later extended to relationship commitment such as renewal and recommendation intentions. Therefore, Internet-only banks need to focus on promoting their trust more effectively for future sustainable growth.
