  • Thermal gravimetric change characteristics and gas phase product - CO, NO, $NO_2$, VOCs - generated in the process of pyrolysis and oxidation. were investigated with variation of process parameters including furnace reactor temperature both in pyrolytic and oxidative conditions. For the thermal gravimetric change characteristics. paper and wood were mainly decomposed at lower temperatures and they had similar thermal gravimetric change trend due to their similar compositions; plastics were mainly decomposed at higher temperatures; in the case of textile. natural compounds were decomposed at lower temperatures and synthetic compounds at relatively higher temperatures; food was decomposed in the wide range of temperatures possibly due to their different kinds of components. For the analysis results of gas phase product. the concentrations of NO, $NO_2$ were detected at higher level at the oxidative conditions than at the pyrolytic conditions except that of CO, which is due to complete combustion with sufficient oxygen at the oxidative condition; food gave off CO, NO, $NO_2$ more than the other wastes. VOCs were emitted more at the pyrolytic conditions than at the oxidative conditions.

  • The increasing interest in light weight materials coupled to the need for cost -effective processing have combined to create a significant opportunity for aluminum P/M. particularly in the automotive industry in order to reduce fuel emissions and improve fuel economy at affordable prices. Additional potential markets for Al PIM parts include hand tools. Where moving parts against gravity represents a challenge; and office machinery, where reciprocating forces are important. Aluminum PIM adds light weight, high compressibility. low sintering temperatures. easy machinability and good corrosion resistance to all advantages of conventional iron bm;ed P/rv1. Current commercial alloys are pre-mixed of either the AI-Si-Mg or AL-Cu-Mg-Si type and contain 1.5% ethylene bis-stearamide as an internal lubricant. The powder is compacted in closed dies at pressure of 200-500Mpa and sintered in nitrogen at temperatures between $580~630^{\circ}C$ in continuous muffle furnace. For some applications no further processing is required. although most applications require one or more secondary operations such as sizing and finishing. These sccondary operations improve the dimension. properties or appearance of the finished part. Aluminum is often considered difficult to sinter because of the presence of a stable surface oxide film. Removal of the oxide in iron and copper based is usually achieved through the use of reducing atmospheres. such as hydrogen or dissociated ammonia. In aluminum. this occurs in the solid st,lte through the partial reduction of the aluminum by magncsium to form spinel. This exposcs the underlying metal and facilitates sintering. It has recently been shown that < 0.2% Mg is all that is required. It is noteworthy that most aluminum pre-mixes contain at least 0.5% Mg. The sintering of aluminum alloys can be further enhanced by selective microalloying. Just 100ppm pf tin chnnges the liquid phase sintering kinetics of the 2xxx alloys to produce a tensile strength of 375Mpa. an increilse of nearly 20% over the unmodified alloy. The ductility is unnffected. A similar but different effect occurs by the addition of 100 ppm of Pb to 7xxx alloys. The lend changes the wetting characteristics of the sintering liquid which serves to increase the tensile strength to 440 Mpa. a 40% increase over unmodified aIloys. Current research is predominantly aimed at the development of metal matrix composites. which have a high specific modulus. good wear resistance and a tailorable coefficient of thermal expnnsion. By controlling particle clustering and by engineering the ceramic/matrix interface in order to enhance sintering. very attractive properties can be achicved in the ns-sintered state. I\t an ils-sintered density ilpproaching 99%. these new experimental alloys hnve a modulus of 130 Gpa and an ultimate tensile strength of 212 Mpa in the T4 temper. In contest. unreinforcecl aluminum has a modulus of just 70 Gpa.

  • Effects of the aluminum melting temperature, melting time and a kind of flux agents on the distribution of surrogate nuclide were investigated in the electric furnace at the aluminum melting including surrogate radionuclides(Co, Cs, Sr) in order to establish the fundamental research of the melting technology for the metallic wastes from the decommissioning of the TRIGA research reactor. It was verified that the fluidity of aluminum melt was increased by adding flux agent but it was slightly varied according to the sort of flux agents. The results of the XRD analysis showed that the surrogate nuclides move into the slag phase and then they were combined with aluminum oxide to form more stable compound. The weight of the slag generated from aluminum melting test increased with increasing melting temperature and melting time and the increase rate of the slag depended on the kind of flux agents added in the aluminum waste. The concentration of the cobalt in the ingot phase decreased with increasing reaction temperature but it increased in the slag phase up to 90$\%$according to the experimental conditions. The volatile nuclides such as Cs and Sr considerably transferred from the ingot phase to the slag and dust phase.

  • Microwave digestion and solid-state extraction were studied for determination of trace aluminum{Al(III)} in human urine samples. A mixed acid of nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide was added to urine samples, organic materials were destructed in a home microwave oven and dried in a drying oven. The dried residues were dissolved in a sulfuric acid solution. The solution was eluted through a XAD-4 resin column adsorbed with 8-hydroxyquinoline(Oxine, HQ). Al(III)-8-hydroxyquinolinate complex was formed in the column and eluted with 0.5 M nitric acid solution. The Al(III) eluted was determined by graphite atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Various experimental conditions of followings were investigated for the optimization : the type of acid to dissolve the residues, the amount of HQ adsorbed on the resin, the pH of sample solutions, the type and concentration of acid to elute the complex from column and so on. The contents of Al(III) in real samples were determinated by a calibration curve method. The recovery in standard spiked samples was 94~101% and the detection limit of this procedure was 0.05 ng/mL.

  • In this study, drainage systems were proposed to drain the leakage of groundwater in the existing underground concrete structures. The system consists of drainage board, wire mesh, fixed nail, and mortar with mineral. In order to increase constructability, the drainage board and wire mesh were attached on the surface of cement concrete using the air nailer and fixed nail. The mortar with 30% of blast furnace slag was sprayed on the drainage board and wire mesh using the spray mortar equipment. The field test construction was carried out in a conventional concrete lining tunnel and concrete retaining wall for performance verification of the drainage system in the field. There was no problem with performance degradation in the drainage system for three years after construction. The bond strength tests were performed on the sprayed mortar at 14 days and about 3 years after field test construction. In case of attaching the wire mesh on the drainage board, the bond strengths of the sprayed mortar were 1.04 MPa at 14 days and 1.46 MPa about 3 years. In case of the drainage board without the wire mesh, the bond strengths of the sprayed mortar were 1.13 MPa at 14 days and 0.89 MPa, less than 1 MPa of bond strength criteria, about 3 years.

  • The following paper concentrates on the objective of studying the influences of extent of duration and temperature on the Pozzolanic properties as well as reactivity of locally existing natural clay of Nai Gaj, district Dadu, Sindh Pakistan. The activation of the clay only occurs through heating when temperature in a furnace chamber reaches 600, 700 and 800oC for 1, 2 and 3 hours and at 900 and 1000℃ for 1 and 2 hours. Furthermore, the strength activity index (SAI) of advanced pozzolanic material happens to be identified through 20% cement replacement for different samples of calcined clay as per ASTM C-618. The compressive strength test of samples had been operated for 7 and 28-days curing afterwards. The maximum compressive strength had been seen in mix E in which cement was replaced with clay calcined at 700℃ for 1 hour that is 27.05 MPa that is 24.31% more than that of control mix. The results gathered from the SAI verdicts the optimal activation temperature is 700℃ within a one-hour time period. The SAI at a temperature of 700℃ with a one-hour duration at 28 days is 124.31% which happens to satisfy the requirements of the new Pozzolanic material, in order to be applied in mortar/concrete (i.e., 75%). The Energy- dispersive spectrometry (EDS) along with the X-ray diffraction (XRD) have been carried out in means of verifying whether there is silica content or amorphous silica present in metakaolin that has been developed. The findings gathered from the SAI were validated, as the analysis of XRD verified that there is in fact Pozzolanic activity of developed metakaolin. Additionally, based on observation, the activated metakaolin holds a significant influence on the increase in mortar's compressive strength.

  • In order to investigate the applicability and suitability of the industrial by-products to apply mono-layer cover system for non-sanitary landfill sites, 6 different industrial by-products, such as construction waste, bottom ash, gypsum, blast furnace and steel manufacture slags, and stone powder sludge, were evaluated. Various physicochemical and hydrodynamic properties of the industrial byproducts were investigated. The environmental safety was monitored using batch and long-term leaching tests as well. In addition, the flexibility of plants was observed by cultivating them in the industrial by-products. The results for physicochemical properties indicate that most of the materials considered appeared to be suitable for landfill cover. Particularly, the concentration levels of hazardous elements regulated by the Korean Law for Waste Management did not exceed the regulatory limits in all target materials. In addition, the concentrations of regulated elements for the Korean Soil Conservation Law were examined below the regulatory limits in most of materials considered, except for the stone powder sludge. The results of batch and long-term experiments showed bottom ash and construction waste were the most suitable materials for landfill cover among the industrial by-products considered. The results of plant studies indicate that the bottom ash among industrial by-products considered was most effective in developing vegetation on landfill site, showing fast germination and large growth index. At the final covering system made of mixture of soil and bottom ash, the optimum application rate of farmyard manure was observed to be 40-50 Mg/ha.

  • In the present article, we have analyzed five slags excavated from the Unified Silla period iron smelting site, i.e., location 4-2 of the Inje Bupyeong-ri site, to investigate the iron smelting process. The total Fe content of the slag excavated from the Inje Bupyeong-ri site ranged between 3.65 and 23.78 wt%, lower than that of typical slag, and deoxidation agent of the slag ranged between 65.92 and 88.96 wt%, higher than that of typical slag. These results suggest that the recovery rate of iron was significantly high. Furthermore, cristobalite was detected in most of the samples, and the furnace temperature, estimated by substituting the analyzed data into the FAS and FCS state diagrams, was confirmed as 1,600℃ or more. These results suggest that the operation at the Inje Bupyeong-ri site was performed at a temperature capable of producing cast iron by completely melting the carbon-containing iron. Observation of the microstructure showed that the iron fragments excavated at the Inje Bupyeong-ri site were identified as white cast iron. Steadite from the ternary iron-carbon-phosphorus system was observed in the white cast iron structure. These results show that indirect smelting was performed when the iron smelting by-products were produced. Based on the analysis results, it was confirmed that the Inje Bupyeong-ri site was the indirect smelting site in the Unified Silla period.

  • For the determination of chlorine in uranium compound, analytical methods by using a steam distillation and a pyrohydrolysis have been developed. The steam distillation apparatus was composed of steam generator, distilling flask and condenser etc. The samples were prepared with an aliquot of LiCl standard solution and a simulated spent nuclear fuel. A sample aliquot was mixed with a solution containing 0.2 M ferrous ammonium sulfate-0.5 M sulfamic acid 3 mL, phosphoric acid 6 mL and sulfuric acid 15 mL. The chloride was then distilled by steam at the temperature of $140^{\circ}C$ until a volume of $90{\pm}5\;mL$ is collected. The pyrohydrolysis equipment was composed of air introduction system, water supply, quartz reaction tube, combustion tube furnace, combustion boat and absorption vessel. The chloride was separated from powdered sample which is added with $U_3O_8$ accelerator, by pyrohydrolysis at the temperature of $950^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour in a quartz tube with a stream of air of 1 mL/min supplied from the water reservoir at $80^{\circ}C$. The chlorides collected in each absorption solution by two methods was diluted to 100 mL and measured with ion chromatography to determine the recovery yield. For the ion chromatographic determination of chlorine in molten salt retained in a metal ingot, the chlorine was separated by means of pyrohydrolysis after air and dry oxidation, and grinding for the sample.

  • Domestic studies on steel plate concrete structures have focused on nuclear structures with high strength. In this study, the SC structure was applied to the general structure, and the SC structure that is advantageous in terms of safety and construction was limited to a special structure. As a basic study for applying SC, this paper proposes basic design information of a SC structure applying cement concrete to plan the structure, which is suitable for eco - friendliness by replacing concrete cement, an important factor in a SC structure, with blast furnace slag. This study examined the compression characteristics and the effective length factor under central compression load. To calculate the effective length factor, the Euler column theory was applied without applying plate theory. The effective length factor was calculated from the yield strength of the steel plate, buckling of the steel plate, and the point at which the concrete was broken. In addition, this study examined whether the maximum compressive strength meets the national and international reference equations with the slenderness ratio (B/t) as a parameter. By analyzing the buckling of the specimen by applying the column theory and selecting the strain of the measured steel plate, the effective length factor was analyzed and compared with the value presented in the reference equation.
