General pharmacological properties of LB-00014, an erythropoietin which was produced by recombinant DNA technique in Biotech Research Institute, LG Chemical Ltd. were examined. The administration of LB-00014 (60, 600, 6000 IU/kg, iv) in mice had no effect in general behavior and central nervous system, and no influences on normal body temperature, writhing syndromes induced by 0.7% acetic acid solution and chemoshock produced by strychnine and pentetrazole solution. LB-00014 (60, 600, 6000 IU/kg, iv) given to anesthetized rabbits showed no effect on blood pressure of carotid artery and respiration rates, and it did not influence the responses produced by injection of acetylcholine or epinephme. The administration of LB-00014 (601, 600, 6000 IU/kg, iv) in rats had no effect on the plasma prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time and hemolytic action. The platelet aggregation induced by collagen in human plasma was not influenced by LB-00014 (10, 100, 1000 lU/kg, iv). It showed no direct effect at 100 and 1000IU/m1 in isolated stomach fundus and uterus of rats and ileum of guinea-pig, and it also had no inhibition of contraction produced by acetylcholine, oxytocin, serotonin and histamine in the above-mentioned preparations. It did not influence gastric secretion, pH and acid output at 6000 IU/kg, iv in rats, but showed a significant increase in intestinal propulsion of mice at 6000 IU/kg, iv. Its administration (60, 600, 6000 lU/kg, iv) caused no effect on urine and electrolyte excretion in rats. These results indicate that LB-00014 does not exsert any of serious pharmacological effects.
A two-year-old, spayed female, Bichon Frise, was referred for severe corneal edema and corneal ulcer in the left eye (OS). The cornea had gradually swelled over one week after phacoemulsification performed a month prior, and that was refractory to 5% sodium chloride eye drop instillation or temporary partial tarsorrhaphy. A complete ophthalmic examination was performed. Severe corneal edema with intrastromal bullae and moderate anterior chamber flare was found on slit-lamp biomicroscopy in the OS, which obstructed the fundus examination. Corneal thickness was measured using high-resolution ultrasound biomicroscopy. The thickness of the OS cornea was 2.74 mm. The "letter-box" conjunctival flap was planned. Dorsal and ventral superficial keratectomy followed by a hood conjunctival flap was performed. Topical and systemic antibiotics and 5% sodium chloride eye drops were prescribed. Decreased corneal thickness was observed at one week, two weeks, and two months postoperatively (1.53 mm, 1.32 mm, and 0.92 mm, respectively). There were no postoperative complications, such as ocular discomfort or recurrent corneal ulcers. The "letter-box" conjunctival flap, a type of superficial keratectomy and conjunctival advancement hood flap, effectively relieved the severe irreversible corneal edema. This could be a simple but effective surgical intervention for patients with endothelial cell damage especially after phacoemulsification.
The general pharmacological properties of YJA20379-1 2-dimethylamino-4,5-dihydrothiazolo[4,5:3,4]pyridol[1,2-a]benzoimidazole, a novel proton pump inhibitor with antiulcer activities were investigated in mice, rats, guinea pigs and rabbits. YJA20379-2 at oral doses of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg did not affect the general behaviour, hexobarbital hypnosis and motor coordination in mice. The drug did not have analgesic or anticonvulsant action at 200 mg/kg. Locomotor activity and body temperature were not influenced at 100 mg/kg. At a concentration up to 2{\times}10^{-4} g/ml$, YJA20379-2 did not produce any contraction or relaxation of isolated preparations, such as the rat fundus, the guinea pig ileum and the rat uterus, and did not antagonize the contractile response to several spasmogens, such as histamine, acetylcholine, serotonin and oxytocin. At dosages up to 200 mg/kg p.o. YJA20379-2 did not affect the pupil size of mice. Intestinal propulsion of mice was not affected up to 200 mg/kg p.o. and the drug did not affect urinary excretion at 100 mg/kg p.o. These results indicate that at dosages up to 100 gm/kg p.o. YJA20379-2 was found not to affect this pharmacological profile. However, at 200 mg/kg the drug lowered body temperature and showed decreased in locomotor activity and urine volume.
Gastrointestinal stromal tumor is the most common mesenchymal tumor in the gastrointestinal tract and is most frequently developed in the stomach in the form of submucosal tumor. The incidence of gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumor is estimated to be as high as 25% of the population when all small and asymptomatic tumors are included. Because gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumor is not completely distinguished from other submucosal tumors, a surgical excisional biopsy is recommended for tumors >2 cm. The surgical principles of gastrointestinal stromal tumor are composed of an R0 resection with a normal mucosa margin, no systemic lymph node dissection, and avoidance of perforation, which results in peritoneal seeding even in cases with otherwise low risk profiles. Laparoscopic surgery has been indicated for gastrointestinal stromal tumors <5 cm, and the indication for laparoscopic surgery is expanded to larger tumors if the above mentioned surgical principles can be maintained. A simple exogastric resection and various transgastric resection techniques are used for gastrointestinal stromal tumors in favorable locations (the fundus, body, greater curvature side). For a lesion at the gastroesophageal junction in the posterior wall of the stomach, enucleation techniques have been tried preserve the organ's function. Those methods have a theoretical risk of seeding a ruptured tumor, but this risk has not been evaluated by well-designed clinical trials. While some clinical trials are still on-going, neoadjuvant imatinib is suggested when marginally unresectable or multiorgan resection is anticipated to reduce the extent of surgery and the chance of incomplete resection, rupture or bleeding.
Purpose: This study was done to examine current status of women's health nursing practicum and identify necessary core nursing skills in this practicum area. Moreover, one syllabus and evaluation sheets for women's health nursing clinical practicum at one university were reviewed. Methods: A survey design was used with 81 educators who were teaching maternity or women's health nursing and its practicum. Results: Most clinical sites for practicum were university hospitals (43.0%), women's hospitals (32.7%), or general hospitals (17.3%); but the majority (77.8%) of educators expressed difficulty in finding appropriate practicum places. Common teaching and learning methods were clinical guides for practicum (44.6%), e-learning content (30.2%), and simulation (23.6%). Core nursing skills for this practicum included assessment of stages of labor, preparation of uterine-fetal monitoring devices and interpretation of results, monitoring uterus and fetal activity, and performing Leopold's maneuver. For postpartum care, the following were included; postpartum fundal massage, assessment of breast engorgement, fundus height, and episiotomy sites, inserting urinary catheter, and teaching the use of patient-controlled analgesia. Conclusion: To improve the quality of clinical practicum, development of a clear course syllabus, standardized clinical guidebook, and core nursing skills is required and should be shared with all relevant nurse educators.

Background and Aim: Gastric cancer is the second most common cancer worldwide. In this study the clinical and histological features of gastric cancer in the cardia and distal stomach were evaluated. Method: Proximal and distal gastric cancer diagnosed and treated in eight provinces of Iran from 2010-2011 were reviewed in all collected cases. The age standardized incident rates were calculated and tumor location and histological type were recorded. Results: The age-standardized incidence rate for the eight centers was 40.6 per 100,000 populations per year with an upper and lower range of 22.1 and 102.4 per 100,000 population per year. Thirty four percent of the tumors were located in the cardia, 3% in fundus, and 63% in the distal stomach. In 7 provinces the prevalence of distal tumors was significantly greater than proximal tumors (p=0.006). A significant relationship was observed between diffuse form of gastric cancer and distal gastric tumors (p=0.007) and between poor tumor differentiation and distal gastric tumors (p<0.001). Conclusions: the result of this study shows that distal gastric cancer is more common than proximal gastric cancer in Iran.
The combined preparations of the traditional Korean prescriptions, Sahyangsohap-won (A1) and Woohwangporyong-hwan (B1) were evaluated on pharmacological actions in rats and mice, in parallel with the preparations of their modified prescriptions (A2 and B2). The acute toxicities of the four preparations were very low of which $LD_{50}$ values were more than 4g/kg, p.o. and no systematic symptoms were found at the doses. All the preparations showed sedative action by prolongation of sleeping time induced with hexobarbital sodium. The action was more potent in the modified preparations than in the original ones. All the preparations had no anticonvulsant action both in chemoshock seizures induced by pentetrazole and strychnine and in electroshock seizure. In rat fundus preparation, A1 and A2 elicited strong contraction at the concentration of $1{\times}10^{-3}\;g/ml$ in bath, whereas B1 and B2 did neither contraction nor relaxation at the same concentration. The four preparations had no inhibitory effect against acetylcholine induced spasm. In rat intestinal preparation, the four preparations exhibited neither contraction nor relaxation. However, A1 and A2 had antagonistic effect against spasm at the concentration of $1{\times}10^{-3}\;g/ml$. Single administration of each preparation at the dose of 0.24g/kg, p.o. stimulated the secretion of pepsin in rat stomach without inciting the secretion of gastric juice. Their stimulating actions were more marked in B1 and B2 than in A1 and A2, and were more promptly exhibited in the modified preparations (A2 and B2). Accelerating action of bile secretion by single administration of each preparation was found at the dose of 0.24g/kg, p.o. in rats. All the preparations except A2 also stimulated the secretion of bile acid.
The present study was designed to investigate the morphological developments of the stomach in the prenatal and postnatal rats. The gastric fundus of 16- to 22-day-old fetuses, neonates, 7-day-old, 14-day-old, 21-day-old, and adult rats were observed by transmission electron microscopy. 1. In the 19-day-old fetuses, the gastric pits and the parietal cells were the primitive state, but the parietal cells contained numerous microvilli and mitochondria. 2. In the 20-day-old fetuses, the intracellular canaliculus appeared in the parietal cells, and glycogen granules were localized mainly in the basal part of the epithelial cells and parietal cells. 3. In the 20-day-old fetuses, the mucous granules and zonular occludens appeared in the gastric glandular cells adjacent to the parietal cells. 4. In the 21-day-old fetuses, the chief cells were identified in the lamina propria and these cells contained granular endoplasmic reticulum and zymogen granules. 5. In the 20- to 22-day-old fetuses, the definitive parietal cells were firstly appeared in pairs or groups within the lamina propria. These cells tended to be placed near the basement membrane and blood capillary, and frequently tended to be extruded into lumen of gland. 6. The endocrine cells were appeared at the basal areas of the gastric gland after the 14-day-old.
Objective: This study was carried out to investigate the effects of Hyangsayukgunja-tang extract on indomethacin-induced gastric mucosal lesions of mice. Methods: To evaluate the effects of Hyangsayukgunja-tang extract and Misoprostol, the morphology of gastric mucosa, and the distribution of mucose cells, PNA(Peanut Agglutinin), ICAM(intercellular adhesion molecule), and apoptotic cells were observed. Hyangsayukgunja-tang extract and Misoprostol were intragastric injected to the test groups at hour 72 before and just before indomethacin treatment(HYT-J, HYT-72, M-J, M-72), while the INDO group was injected only with indomethacin and the control group was subcutaneously injected only with saline. Results: The gastric mucosal lesions incresed in the fundus and body of INDO group, but softened in HYT group and M group, the effects were more excellent in the HYT-72, M-72 groups than the HYT-J, M-J groups and in the HYT group than M group. The disappearance of surface and neck mucose cells were shown in INDO group, but softened in HYT group and M group. The mucosal configuration of HYT-72 group was the same as control group. The numerical increase of PNA positive reaction in cytoplasm of perietal cells were appeared in INDO group. The PNA positive reaction in HYT group and Miso-group were shown in surface mucous cells and microvilli of apical surface in chief cells as control group, and were the same as control group in all mucosa of HYT-72 group. The distribution of ICAM positive cells, increased in INDO group, but decreased in M-72 group, and were the same as control group in HYT-72 group. The apoptotic cells, increased noticeably in gastric mucosa of INDO group, decreased in HYT group and M group, and decreased noticeably in HYT-72 group. Conclusions: Hyangsayukgunja-tang extract had excellent effects on indomethacin-induced gastric mucosal lesions.
In order to investigate the effect of Bujaleejungtang, by means of oral medication to rats and mice, to isolated intestine and stomach, and the effect to pyloric ulcer, indomethacin-induced ulcer, secretion of gastric juice, and to transport ability of intestine content were studied as the action to G-I tract. The effect to normal rats and resperpine-treated rats were studied as the action to thermo-regulation. The results were as follows: 1. Bujaleejungtang showed the inhibitory effect on the smooth muscle contraction induced by acethylcholine chloride and barium chloride in the isolated mice ileum. 2. Bujaleejungtang showed inhibitory effect on the contraction induced by acetylcholine chloride and barium chloride in the rat fundus-strip. 3. Inhibitory effect of Bujaleejungtang on pyloric ulcer, indomethacin-induced gastric ulcer in rats was statistical recognized(p<0.05). 4. No inhibitory effect of Bujaleejungtang on gastric juice secretion in Shay rats was recognized. 5. Inhibitory effect of Bujaleejungtang on gastric free acidity and total acidity in Shay rats was recognized only when Bujaleejungtang was medicated in high thickness(2000mg/kg) (p<0.001). 6. Inhibitory effect of Bujaleejungtang on pepsin output in Shay rats was recognized only when Bujaleejungtang was medicated in high thickness(2000mg/kg)(p<0.001). 7. Inhibitory effect of Bujaleejungtang on barium sulfate transport in the small intestine of mice was recognized only when Bujaleejungtang was medicated in high thickness(2000mg/kg)(p<0.05). 8. Inhibitory effect of Bujaleejungtang on barium sulfate transport in the large intestine of mice was recognized(p<0.05). 9. Inhibitory effect of Bujaleejungtang on rectal temperature in normal rats was recognized. 10. Inhibitory effect of Bujaleejungtang on rectal temperature in reserpine-treated rats was recognized only when Bujaleejungtang was medicated in high thickness(2000mg/kg)(p<0.05).
