This paper investigates the dynamic response of structures during earthquakes and provides a clear understanding of soil-structure interaction phenomena. It analyses various parameters, comprising ground shear wave velocity and structure properties. The effect of soil impedance function form on the structural response of the system through the use of springs and dashpots with two frequency cases: independent and dependent frequencies. The superstructure and the ground were modeled linearly. Using the substructure method, two different approaches are used in this study. The first is an analytical formulation based on the dynamic equilibrium of the soil-structure system modeled by an analog model with three degrees of freedom. The second is a numerical analysis generated with 2D finite element modeling using ABAQUS software. The superstructure is represented as a SDOF system in all the SSI models assessed. This analysis establishes the key parameters affecting the soil-structure interaction and their effects. The different results obtained from the analysis are compared for each studied case (frequency-independent and frequency-dependent impedance functions). The achieved results confirm the sensitivity of buildings to soil-structure interaction and highlight the various factors and effects, such as soil and structure properties, specifically the shear wave velocity, the height and mass of the structure. Excitation frequency, and the foundation anchoring height, also has a significant impact on the fundamental parameters and the response of the coupled system at the same time. On the other hand, it have been demonstrated that the impedance function forms play a critical role in the accurate evaluation of structural behavior during seismic excitation. As a result, the evaluation of SSI effects on structural response must take into account the dynamic properties of the structure and soil accordingly.

A fundamental study on warm incremental forming of a magnesium alloy sheet has been carried out. In order to enhance the incremental formability of the magnesium alloy sheet, a local heating device was newly designed and manufactured. Through the incremental forming tests of AZ31 under various forming conditions, the effects of process parameters such as the temperature, feeding depth per cycle, and inclination angle on the incremental formability of AZ31 were investigated. In addition, conventional FLDs at elevated temperatures were constructed experimentally and applied to predict the forming failure.

Mold cavities of gears should be made larger than the product specification since plastics shrink when changing from a molten to a solid state. For injection molded spur gears, two design methods for the compensation of shrinkage are widely used. One is the module correction method and the other is the pressure angle correction method. Both methods are based on the assumption that shrinkage occurs toward the center of a molded gear. This paper deals with the shrinkage rate and proposes a method of designing gear cavity derived from the measured shrinkage rates which govern the outside diameter, the tooth depth and the tooth thickness of a molded gear. The proposed method imposes no restriction on the shrinkage direction and provides a cavity with all of the fundamental gear design parameters.
One of the most fundamental and the oldest issues in the provision of health care throughout the world has been the issue of the role of the public and private sector of health care, and the relationship between them. This paper describes issues associated with the concept of health oriented partnerships in the United Kingdom and seeks to contrast public and private partnerships both in health and in health care. In the United Kingdom it is suggested that health care is conceived by the population to equate to the National Health Service(NHS) with "add on" private health care for certain sectors of the community and within certain well defined clinical parameters. This paper can provide us with valuable information on the characteristics of UK health care systems, current health policies as well as issues relating to the public and private partnerships in health/ health care in the UK, thus offer important policy implications for the improvement of Korean health care system which lacks health-oriented coordinations and partnership between public and private sector very considerably.

Recently, the problem of exhaust gas pollution is increasingly being aggravated by the active use of the Diesel engine. For the fuel-injection system which affects the composition of exhaust gas from the Bosch type single-hole nozzle in the Diesel engine, a mathematical model was set up to study pressure variations in the high pressure pipe, the injection rate, and the needle lift. The fundamental equations of the mathematical model have been solved by the Newton Raphson Method applying the Finite Diffrence Method. The effective stroke of the injection pump plunger due to a change in engine rpm was calculated by the measurement of Control Rack, Pinion, and Plunger sizes and by the use of Characteristic Curve of Governor. The computed results for the pressure variations in the high pressure pipe and needle lift at 800 rpm and 1000 rpm are in good agreement with experimental ones in general. By a developed program, the effects of other various parameters will by calculated for the performance of the fuel-injection system.
This paper presents a systematic approach to study the carrier based pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques applied to diode-clamped and cascade multilevel inverters by using multi-modulating patterns. This method is based on the description of controllable redundant parameters in the modulating signals. A unified mathematical formulation is presented for carrier based PWM methods, which obtains outputs similar to the corresponding space vector PWM. A full and separate control of the fundamental voltage, vector redundancies and phase redundancies can be obtained in the carrier based PWM. In this paper, the proposed PWM method and corresponding algorithm for generating multi-modulating signals will be formulated and demonstrated by our simulations.
The main purpose of this study is to measure and compare the state of the art (SOA) of DNA chips of Korea, Japan and the United States using Gordon's scoring model. From the comparison, Korea's SOAs of DNA chip were estimated to be 70% and 62% of those of the United States in terms of functional and technical parameters, whereas Japan's SOAs were 79% and 77%, respectively. The results of this study could be applied to the strategic technology planning for narrowing the technology gap, and used as one of the key criteria for resource allocation in national R&D programs and the fundamental information to formulate the biotechnology policy for the Korean government.

The roasting of pyrite with a cyclone reactor have been studied in terms of investigating the reaction behavior of pyrite. The development of a fundamental model for pyrite oxidation and lime sulfation in a vertical cyclone reactor. The model assumes a chemical control shrinking core behavior for the pyrite and a fluid film control shrinking core behavior for the lime. The oxygen and sulphur dioxide concentrations and the energy balance for the gas, pyrite and lime particles are solved. The model was solved and characterized numerically. Experiments have been performed to study the influence of reaction parameters such as reactor temperatures, pyrite particle sizes, air flow rates, feeding rates, and mixing ratio of pyrite and lime. The oxidation and sulfation products were characterized chemically and physically.

In general, the softer the stiffness of a linear vibration isolator the better the performance of isolation can be achieved. However, the stiffness of the isolator cannot be made too soft because it needs a sufficient stiffness to hold the load. This is the most critical limitation of a linear vibration isolator. Recently, a HSLDS (High-Static-Low-Dynamic-Stiffness) magnetic vibration isolator was proposed to overcome this fundamental limitation. The suggested isolator utilizes two pairs of attracting magnets that that introduces negative stiffness. Previously, this new type of vibration isolator was merely introduced and showed a possibility of practical use. In this paper, detailed dynamics of the HSLDS magnetic isolator are studied using computer simulations. Then, the isolation performance is examined for various design parameters to aid the practical use.

A pump which is a fundamental device in a hydraulic system affects on overall system performance to a great deal. Such problems as leakage and solid friction loss become important in field applications, especially for the case of operation under high pressure and at high speed. So the research on this kind of subjects is necessary to improve the performance of hydraulic devices. A high pressure radial piston pump is analyzed here, which has a stationary cylinder block. It pumps hydraulic fluid by letting camring push a piston in a cylinder. Fluid leaks between the piston and cylinder so that it deteriorates the pump efficiency. Furthermore, the piston happens to touch the cylinder wall to increase the friction loss and wear. In this research, by means of FDM, volumetric, mechanical and overall efficiencies are observed by varying several design Parameters and operation conditions. Design values or their trends are presented to improve these efficiencies.
