  • We investigated photo-induced electron transfer (PET) in a dye-labeled peptide, fluorophore-Ala-Gly-Gln-Tyr, employing time-resolved fluorescence. As an effort to develop new functional dyes, we studied an acriflavine derivative for the electron-acceptor in the excited state from tyrosine, an electrondonor in the ground-state. The pH dependence of the fluorescence lifetime of the model peptide indicates that electron transfer between the excited dye and tyrosine occurs when the tyrosine is deprotonated. The proton-coupled electron transfer appears to be sequential rather than concerted. We also report direct time measurements on the end-to-end loop formation processes of the peptide in water.

  • In this work, the electrochemical properties of the surface treated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) are investigated for supercapacitors. Nitrogen- and oxygen functional groups containing MWNTs are prepared by nitrogen precursors and acidic treatment, respectively. The surface properties of the MWNTs are confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Zeta-potential measurements. The electrochemical properties of the MWNTs are investigated by cyclic voltammetry, impedance spectra, and charge-discharge cycling performance in 1 M $H_2SO_4$ at room temperature. As a result, these functionalized MWNTs lead to an increase in the specific capacitance as compared with the pristine MWNTs. It proposes that the pyridinic and pyridinic-N-oxides nitrogen species influence on the specific capacitance due to their positive charges, and thus an improved electron transfer at high current loads, since they are the most important functional groups affecting capacitive behaviors.

  • Photoinduced electron transport process in nature such as photoelectric conversion and long-range electron transfer in photosynthetic organisms are known to occur not only very efficiently but also unidirectionally through the functional groups of biomolecules. The basic principles in the development of new functional devices can be inspired from the biological systems such as molecular recognition, electron transfer chain, or photosynthetic reaction center. By mimicking the organization of the biological system, molecular electronic devices can be realized $artificially^{1)}$. The nano-fabrication technology of biomolecules was applied to the development of nano-protein chip for simultaneously analyzing many kinds of proteins as a rapid tool for proteome research. The results showed that the self-assembled protein layer had an influence on the sensitivity of the fabricated bio-surface to the target molecules, which would give us a way to fabricate the nano-protein chip with high sensitivity. The results implicate that the biosurface fabrication using self-assembled protein molecules could be successfully applied to the construction of nanoscale bio-photodiode and nano-protein chip based on electrical detection.

  • The combination of rapid prototyping(RP) and rapid tooling(RT) has a potential for rapid manufacturing of three-dimensional parts. In the present study, a new RP system transfer type Variable Lamination Manufacturing using Expandable Polystyrene Foam (VLM-ST), is proposed to fabricate net shapes of three-dimensional prototypes. Various three-dimensional parts, such as a knob shape and a human head shape, are manufactured by the VLM-ST apparatus. In addition, a new rapid tooling technology, which utilizes a room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) molding technique and a triple reverse process technique, is proposed to manufacture net shapes of three-dimensional plastic parts using the prototypes of VLM-ST. A plastic part of the knob shape is produced by the proposed RT technology. The combination of the proposed RP and RT enables the manufacture of a plastic knob within two days.

  • We proposed the two-dimensional (2D) / three-dimensional (3D) convertible modified integral imaging system using functional polarizing film named $imazer^{TM}$, which transfer or scatter the incident light ray according to the polarizing direction of ray. When the incident light rays transfer to $imazer^{TM}$, the rays generate 3D image through the process of the modified integral imaging system. However, the scattered light rays generate 2D image through the simple backlight scheme when the incident rays are scattered by the film. The proposed method can be implemented the partial 3D display system without any mechanical movements. In this paper, we propose and verify our system using some basic experiments and its results.

  • Total eyelid defect comprises full-thickness loss of both upper and lower eyelids in a patient. It is a rare and devastating condition with serious implications related to vision, which mandates early and functional reconstruction when associated with intact globe. The primary goal is to give a stable coverage for orbital protection but at the same time provide a functional reconstruction of the defect, to allow for adequate mobility of the eyelids so that the patient's vision is restored to normal with minimal disability. When the defect is massive, and in the absence of loco-regional flaps, microvascular tissue transfer is needed. In this report we describe a radial-artery-based microvascular tissue transfer with a unique innovation utilizing the contralateral frontalis muscle to reconstruct a case of unilateral total upper and lower eyelid loss.

  • Single-phased $CaZrO_3:Dy^{3+}$, $Tm^{3+}$ series have been successfully synthesized by solid-state reaction, and their luminescence properties were investigated. Under 355 nm excitation, $CaZrO_3:Dy^{3+}$ series showed characteristic emission of $Dy^{3+}$, which exhibited yellowish white color. By introducing $Tm^{3+}$ into the matrix, the emitted hue of the $Dy^{3+}$-doped sample could be easily tailored to white, and simultaneously, energy transfer from $Tm^{3+}$ to $Dy^{3+}$ was observed. The color coordinates of the optimum white-emitting sample were (0.321, 0.323), which were very close to the data of the National Television Standard Committee (0.33, 0.33). The co-activated phosphors presented good match to ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (LEDs), which revealed that they could be novel promising phosphors utilized in white LED application.

  • Poly(vinyl alcohol-b-styrene) (poly(VA-b-St)) diblock copolymer containing high syndiotactic poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was synthesized by the saponification of poly(vinyl pivalate-b-styrene) (poly(VPi-b-St)). For the block copolymer, poly(vinyl pivalate) (PVPi) with trichloromethyl end group was obtained via telomerization of vinyl pivalate with carbon tetrachloride as a telogen and 2,2-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator. Then resulting poly(vinyl pivalate) with trichloromethyl end group was used as an effient macroinitiator for the synthesis of poly(VPi-b-St) using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) in the presence of CuCl/2,2'-bipyridine at 130 $^{\circ}C$. The poly(vinyl pivalate) macroinitiator, poly(VPi-b-St), poly(VA-b-St) were characterized by GPC, FT-IR and $^1$H-NMR. And the analysis showed that integrity of the block copolymer was maintained during saponification reaction.

  • The Protein Structural and Functional Conservation need a common language for data definition. With the help of common language provided by Protein Ontology the high level of sequence and functional conservation can be extended to all organisms with the likelihood that proteins that carry out core biological processes will again be probable orthologues. The structural and functional conservation in these proteins presents both opportunities and challenges. The main opportunity lies in the possibility of automated transfer of protein data annotations from experimentally traceable model organisms to a less traceable organism based on protein sequence similarity. Such information can be used to improve human health or agriculture. The challenge lies in using a common language to transfer protein data annotations among different species of organisms. First step in achieving this huge challenge is producing a structured, precisely defined common vocabulary using Protein Ontology. The Protein Ontology described in this paper covers the sequence, structure and biological roles of Protein Complexes in any organism.
