Objective: Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer's disease. Antioxidant stress and inflammatory reactions are important causes of neurodegenerative diseases and are major causes of PD. Many animal experiments have been aimed at treating PD using the antioxidant effects of various traditional medicines and dietary supplements. This review reports the research investigating the antioxidant effects of herbs in in vivo PD models. Methods: The study consisted of a database search for articles related to PD and herbal treatments using the OASIS, NDSL, KTKP, Korean KISS, PubMed, Science Direct, CNKI, Wanfang, and J-STAGE databases. The search period was limited from the start of the search engine application to November 14, 2019. Studies were selected to confirm the antioxidant effects of herbal medicines in an in vivo PD model. Results: Eighty-two studies were summarized for plant species, extracts (or compounds), animal models, neurotoxins, and functional results. The most frequently used herbal materials were Bacopa monnieri, Camellia sinensis, Centella asiatica, and Withania somnifera. MPTP and 6-OHDA were the most commonly used neurotoxins for inducing PD. Most studies confirmed an increased expression and activation of antioxidant enzymes and a decrease in oxidative stress. Herbal materials showed their antioxidant effects regardless of the order of treatment and confirmed their possible use as treatments for the prevention and treatment of neurodegeneration. Conclusion: Many herbal medicines have antioxidant effects and are likely to be effective in delaying neurodegenerative damage by inhibiting or reducing oxidative stress by expression of antioxidant enzymes.
During a last decade, the introduced traits in commercialized GM crops have been diversified from a simple trait such as herbicide resistance gene or insectresistance gene which are related to the crop production into more complicated traits such as modification of fatty acid or essential amino acid composition, modified coloring pattern of flower. In addition, it was investigated that several other GM crops bearing more refined traits expected to lead next generation are also awaiting for risk assessment (RA) or under field test for the preparation of RA in the near future. These GM crops include abiotic stress resistance including drought or cold, increased biomass, production of bioethanol or diesel, production of pharmaceuticals or functional materials for industrial. In particular, in 2008 and 2009, it was reported that the highest number of GM crops for molecular farming are under developed in laboratory or green house level in all the world. Likewise, in Korea, 171 events from 49 plant species are under developed to introduce several important traits. At present, about 10 events are under field test to select elite lines for RA application. For the first time, herbicide resistance turfgrass developed by Korean research team has been submitted for RA and currently under requested for additional data. Moreover, GM rice resistant to leaf roll (folder) disease is expected as a next event to be submitted for RA application.

This study was carried out to determine total contents of phenol and flavonoid in common and tartary buckwheat for the purpose of developing new kind of functional food with buckwheat materials. Total content of phenol and flavonoid in seeds of tartary buckwheat were higher than that of common buckwheat. It showed same tendency in groats and hulls. Total content of phenol and flavonoid in groats showed higher than hulls in tartary buckwheat while those of hulls was a little higher than groats in common buckwheat seed. Rutin content in common buckwheat was higher in odor of the hulls (25.2 mg/100 g)>dehulled seed(19.8 mg/100 g)>groats (12.8mg/100 g). But tartary buckwheat was higher in oder of the groats(2042.1 mg/100 g)>dehulled seed (1375.8 mg/100 g)>hulls(138.7 mg/100 g). Flavanol content in dehulled seeds of the tartary and common buckwheat did not show the difference. However, flavanol contents in leaf, stem and spouts of tartary buckwheat were respectively higher than in those of common. Among the flavanols, catechin content was highest in all plant parts of their buckwheat and also was higher in odor of epicatechin>epicatechingallate. However, epicatechingallate content in sprouts of both buckwheat species was about 30-40 times higher than seeds.

In this study, we investigated the antioxidant effects and active ingredients of Gynura Procumbens extracts obtained through various extraction methods for the development of natural-based cosmetics and pharmaceutical materials. The contents of compounds, total flavonoids, chlorogenic acid, and caffeic acid were compared at different concentrations, revealing the highest content of active ingredients in the 100% ethanol extract. Antioxidant activity assessed by DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging assays showed a concentration-dependent increase in antioxidant activity with the ethanol concentration. Additionally, we validated the DNA damage inhibition and anti-inflammatory effects of Gynura Procumbens extracts through UVB irradiation on Hs68 cell models. The 100% ethanol extract demonstrated significant inhibition of the expression of p-p53, γ-H2AX, iNOS, and COX-2 induced by UVB, indicating its potential in alleviating photodamage effects. Consequently, the efficient extraction of Gynura Procumbens for skin functional material development was confirmed, suggesting the suitability of ethanol or alcohol-based solvents.
CDPKs have pivotal roles in plant $Ca^{2+}$-mediated transduction signaling. A total of 29 CDPK genes have been identified in rice (Oryza sativa L.), but their key functions have not been completely noted. This study focused on the OsCPK11 gene, which has not been studied, to determine its functional characteristics. A study of tissue-specific expressions revealed that the OsCPK11 gene is expressed in young leaves, mature leaves and flowers of rice. An expression of the gene was also confirmed in gibberellin-treated aleurone layers of rice. Regarding the phenotypic characteristics of Tos17-inserted OsCPK11 mutants, the heights of the mutants were not distinguishable from the heights of wild type plants, but the number of caryopses and the caryopses' weights were significantly statistically different. In addition, many grains of the mutants had white belly materials in their endosperm. The cDNA of the OsCPK11 was cloned, and an OsCPK11 protein of about 60.5 kD was obtained by using a GST affinity chromatography and an SDS-PAGE. An analysis of the amino-acid sequence of the protein indicated that the OsCPK11 protein has the structural characteristics of typical CDPKs. The results provided useful information about the functions of the OsCPK11 gene and further noted the roles CDPKs have in $Ca^{2+}$-mediated signaling in plants.
Plantago asiatica L. (P. asiatica) is a perennial plant belonging to the plantaginaceae and is useful in treating a various diseases such as wounds, bronchitis, and chronic constipation. The bioactive effects of P. asiatica extract was evaluated to determine its potential for use as a variety materials in the food, pharmaceutical, and agricultural industries. Polyphenol and flavonoid contents, free radical scavenging, reducing power activity, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) expression were measured to identify the antioxidative activity. Anti-inflammatory effects were evaluated via analysis of nitric oxide (NO) and pro-inflammatory protein expression in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cell. As a result of measuring the antioxidant activities of the P. asiatica extract, the total polyphenol content was 50.91±0.78 mg gallic acid equivalents/g and the flavonoid content was 100.99±0.44 mg rutin equivalents/g, and both DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities and reducing power increased depending on the concentration. Also, intracellular ROS production was inhibited by the P. asiatica extract. No cytotoxicity was observed when P. asiatica extract was treated, and NO and inflammatory protein expression were inhibited, and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) phosphorylation was also inhibited in a concentration-dependent manner. In conclusion, P. asiatica is a functional natural resources of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agents that can be used in various industries, including food and agriculture.
Packaging of export cut lilies reduces physical damage during distribution like dropping, shock, vibration, compression and serves to protect from necrosis, microbial contamination and decomposition. Study on which packaging materials must be selected is necessary because it serves to direct effect maintaining quality and the degree of freshness. newspaper, perforated OPP film, Oriented Nylon film (ON), punched OPP film, OPP films are used in this study. Plant senescence of lilies was happened rapidly during storage at $25^{\circ}C$ rather than at $5^{\circ}C$. Also, water absorption, fresh weight at during storage $25^{\circ}C$ rather than at $5^{\circ}C$ In addition, fresh weight of lilies storage at $25^{\circ}C$ appears higher than at $5^{\circ}C$ all of the packaging materials except OPP because water absorption of lily storage at $5^{\circ}C$ appears higher than at $25^{\circ}C$, thereby suppressing the fresh weight reducing Also, effect on biological activity of lilies from shape of packaging material appears higher during storage at $5^{\circ}C$ than at $25^{\circ}C$. Compared with each packaging materials, newspaper packaging is the smallest effect on changes in biological activity of cut lilies during storage. Thus, the results demonstrate that flowering date are affected mainly by the storage temperature rather than packaging materials.
This study investigated the physiological characteristics of various medicinal plant extracts including Crataegi Fructus (CF), Perilla frutescens Britton var. acuta Kudo (PF), Geranium thunbergii sieb. et Zucc. (GT) and Polygonum multiflorum Thunberg (PM) for use in extending the shelf-life and improving the functional properties of seasoned pork. CF and GT showed a wide spectrum of antimicrobial activities against 5 kinds of Gram (+) bacteria and 5 kinds of Gram (-) bacteria. The antimicrobial activities of the extracts decreased as the heat treatment temperature increased between 60 and $121^{\circ}C$, but their activities remained relatively high following heat treatment. The total phenolic compound contents of the CF, PF, GT, PM extracts were 66.2, 29.0, 96.6 and 13.3 mg/g, respectively. The order of their DPPH radical scavenging activity was GT > CF > PF > PF. The nitrite scavenging activities of the CF, PF and GT extracts at 0.1% concentration were 10.5, 1.6 and 3.8%, respectively. The GT extract (99.7%) showed the highest degree of lipid rancidity inhibition compared to CF (90.3%), PF (88.9%) and PM (41.2%). After heat treatment for 15 min at $121^{\circ}C$, the DPPH radical scavenging activity of CF decreased but it increased in GT and PM. The nitrite scavenging activities of CF and GT decreased after heat treatment for 15 min at $121^{\circ}C$ but remained at relatively high levels. Also, degrees of lipid rancidity inhibition remained relatively high in PF (86.3%) and GT (99.8%) after heat treatment for 15 min at $121^{\circ}C$. These results suggest that CF and GT extracts could be used as ingredients in seasoning sauce to improve the shelf-life and functional properties of seasoned pork.

When ginseng seedlings are cultured in paddy fields, quality degradation and yield reduction are induced by severe plant loss with chlorosis on leaves occurred physiological disorder by excessive salt and poor drainage, rusty-root occurrence, and root rot etc. Accordingly, in order to solve these problems, this study was performed to investigate the treatment method, concentrations and time of activated ion calcium as environment-friendly agricultural materials. Activated ion calcium is an enriched and purified water-soluble mineral calcium component for absorbing quickly into plant as a highly functional calcium and it is an alkaline calcium of 37% (370 $m{\ell}$/1 ${\ell}$) concentration with pH 13. Treatment method was that ginseng seeds were sown after removing water in the shade after seed immersion for 1 minute with active ion calcium of 20-fold diluted solution, and then irrigated $4{\ell}$ per 3.3 $m^2$ with 200-fold, 400-fold, and 600-fold diluted solution before emergence on late March, and supplied 1 time on leaves with 500-fold diluted solution in June and July respectively. The disease rate by treatment of activated ion calcium was that on the treatment of soil irrigated with 200-fold diluted solution compared to non-treated soil, damping-off was 33%, anthracnose was 100% reduced and the occurrence rate of rusty-root was 30% reduced. In addition, when active ion calcium of 200-fold diluted solution were soil irrigated, first and second grade ginseng were respectively 26% and 22% produced more, compared with control.
