This research was conducted to analyze the compatibility of used monomers and produce the high functional contact lens material containing silicone monomers. Silicone monomer (Sil-OH), Trimethylsilylmethacrylate (TSMA) were used as additives for the basic combination of Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane (POSS), methyl methacrylate (MMA) and methyl acrylate (MA). And also, the materials were copolymerized with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as the cross-linking agent, AIBN (thermal polymerization initiator) as the initiator. It is judged that the fabricated lenses of all combinations are optically excellent and thus used monomers have good compatibility. Measurement of the optical and physical characteristics of the manufactured hydrophilic lens material were varied in each case. Especially TSMA with POSS increases the oxygen permeability and Sil-OH with POSS increases the wettability by the addition of Sil-OH. These materials were considered to have compatibility each other, so it can be used in functional contact lens material.
This research is conducted to create a functional hydrogel ophthalmic lens containing nanoparticles. Carbon nanoparticles and PEGMEMA are used as additives for the basic combination of HEMA, MA, and MMA, and the materials are copolymerized with EGDMA as the cross-linking agent and AIBN as the thermal initiator. The hydrogel lens is produced using a cast-mold method, and the materials are thermally polymerized at $100^{\circ}C$ for an hour. The polymerized lens sample is hydrated in a 0.9 % saline solution for 24 hours before the optical and physical characteristics of the lens are measured. The refractive index, water content, contact angle, light transmittance, and tensile strength are measured to evaluate the physical and optical characteristics of the hydrogel lens. The refractive index, water content, contact angle, UV-B light transmittance, UV-A light transmittance, visible light transmittance, tensile strength and breaking strength of the hydrogel lens polymer are 1.4019~1.4281, 43.05~51.18 %, $31.95{\sim}68.61^{\circ}$, 21.69~58.11 %, 35.59~84.26 %, 45.85~88.06 %, 0.1075~0.1649 kgf and 0.1520~0.2250 kgf, respectively. The results demonstrate an increase in refractive index, tensile strength and breaking strength and a decrease in contact angle and light transmittance. Furthermore, the visible light transmissibility is significantly increased at PEG 10 %. It is clear that this material can be used for high-performance ophthalmic lenses with wettability, ultraviolet ray blocking effect, and tensile strength.
The aim of the present study was to compare the contrast sensitivity of soft contact lens wearers, spectacle wearers or emmetropia. Seventy myopic eyes and thirty emmetropic eyes aged 19 to 26 years were collected. The myopic group included 48 eyes corrected with spectacle lenses and 22 eyes of them corrected with contact lenses, too: all had corrected vision acuity of 20/20 or better. Spatial contrast sensitivity was measured using the OPTEC 6500 contrast sensitivity view-in tester included the EyeView Functional Vision Analysis software at photopic or mesoopic condition. There was no significant difference in contrast sensitivity between spectacle lenses and emmetropes. Myopes corrected with soft contact lenses showed statistical sensitivity losses at 1.5, 12 cycle/degree spatial frequencies. In conclusion, our findings suggest that loss of contrast sensitivity in soft contact lens wearers might be interpreted as evidence for corneal disruption before corneal pathological events occur in contact lens wearers. Contrast sensitivity testing appears to be a useful method for evaluating soft contact lenses.
The physical and antibacterial properties of ophthalmic lenses fabricated by copolymerization with hydrogel monomers using two types of graphene were measured, and their usability as contact lens materials was analyzed. For polymerization, silicone monomers, including SID-OH, 3-(methacryloxy)propyl tris(trimethylsiloxy)silane, and decamethylcyclopentasiloxane, were used, and N,N-dimethylacetamide, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as a crosslinking agent, and azobisisobutyronitrile as an initiator were added. Also, graphene oxide nanoparticle (GON) and graphene nanoplate (GNP) were used as an additive, and the physical properties of the lenses fabricated after copolymerization were evaluated. The fabricated lenses satisfied the basic physical properties of general hydrogel contact lenses and showed the characteristics of lenses with high water content, and the disadvantage of very weak durability, due to low tensile strength. However, it was confirmed that the tensile strength and antibacterial properties were greatly improved by adding GON and GNP. With GON, the oxygen permeability and refractive index of the fabricated lenses were slightly improved. Therefore, it was determined that the graphene materials used in this study can be used in various ways as a contact lens material.
We manufactured functional contact lens materials using 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-benzophenone, titanium(VI) isopropoxide and nanogold, nanoplatinum with UV-blocking and antimicrobial effects. Contact lens was manufactured by cast mould method. The resulting mixture was copolymerized by heating at $70^{\circ}C$ for about 40 min, at $80^{\circ}C$ for about 40 min, and finally at $100^{\circ}C$ for about 40 min. The refractive index of 1.434 ~ 1.436, water content of 35.24 ~ 36.32%, and visible transmittance of 88.3 ~ 90.8% were obtained for the contact lens materials. The polymer materials satisfied the physical properties required to make the material suitable to be applied as a functional material for ophthalmological purposes.
In this study, lenses are fabricated using various nanomaterials as additives to a silicone polymer made with an optimum mixing ratio and short polymerization time. In addition, PVP is added at a ratio of 1 % to investigate the physical properties according to the degree of dispersion, and the compatibility with hydrophobic silicone and the possibility of application as a functional lens material are confirmed. The main materials are SIU as a silicone monomer, DMA, a hydrophilic copolymer, EGDMA as a crosslinking agent, and 2H2M as a photoinitiator. Holmium (III) oxide, Europium (III) oxide, aluminum oxide, and PVP are used. When Holmium (III) oxide and Europium (III) oxide are added based on the Ref sample, the characteristics of the lens tend to be similar overall, and the aluminum oxide shows a tendency slightly different from the previous two oxides. This material can be used as a silicone lens material with various nano oxides and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) acting as a dispersant.
This study used cerium iron hydroxide nanoparticle with HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), the cross-linker EGDMA (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate), NVP (N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) and the initiator AIBN (azobisisobutyronitrile) for copolymerization. Also, the physical properties of the prepared lenses were compared, and their applicability as polymers for ophthalmic materials was experimented. The results of the measurement showed that the UV blocking rate and the wettability increased with the cerium iron hydroxide nanoparticles addition ratio, and the refractive index and water content were not affected. Thus, the produced copolymer is expected to be useful as a functional contact lens material while satisfying the basic physical properties of the hydrogel contact lens.
This study investigated the effect of the structure of the crosslinking agent used in contact lens polymerization on the physical properties and drug dissolution of contact lenses.es Contact lenses were manufactured using 0.3% and 3% of 4 types of crosslinking agents, respectively, and ofloxacin was used as the drug. Contact lenses using hydrophilic crosslinking agents improved water contents and wettability, and the more hydrophilic functional groups, the greater the effect. Contact lenses with a high concentration of crosslinking agent had a low concentration of eluted drug and a longer release time. The cross-linking agent structure of contact lenses had an effect on improving the performance of contact lenses and controlling drug release.
Purpose: To understand the pattern of prescribing contact lenses in Korea from 2010 to 2013. Methods: Four hundred survey questionnaires were randomly posted to Korean Optometric clinics for 4 years. The questionnaire was the same form as a form used for International Contact Lens Prescribing Trend. It was also designed to collect information about the contact lenses prescribed to the first 10 patients after its receipt. Results: 1937 fits were used for the analysis among the four hundred survey questionnaires. The average patient age was $26.2{\pm}7.0$ in 2010, $26.1{\pm}7.6$ in 2011, $24.7{\pm}6.6$ in 2012 and $24.8{\pm}7.2$ in 2013. The patients were mainly women (75%). Of all the soft contact lenses, silicon hydrogel lenses were 18% of fits (17% in 2010, 10% in 2011, 20% in 2012, 24% in 2013). By degine, the percentage of toric design lenses accounted for 17% of soft lenses fits and had increased during 4 years (10% in 2010, 18% in 2011, 16% in 2012, 22% in 2013), and cosmetic contact lens made up for 29% (15% in 2010, 20% in 2011, 40% in 2012, 41% in 2013). Conclusions: The contact lenses wearers were mostly women and the average patient age becomes slightly younger. In relation to the increase in the mumber of younger female contact lens wearers, the percentage of cosmetic lenses prescription was much higher (29%) than the global average (7%), and it has gradually increased for last 4 years. This trend could be related to the growth of beauty market in Korea. By emphasizing on toric lens marketing in manufactures, the prescription rate has been gradually increased.
Purpose: The hydrogel lenses have been functionalized with HA(Hyaluronic Acid) using two different methods: construction of an IPN(Interpenetrating Polymer Networks) and formation of CCB(Chemical Covalent Bonding). The lysozyme adsorption and physical properties such as optical transmittance and water content of the hydrogel lenses have been investigated in order to determine whether method is suitable for the application potentials in contact lens industry. Methods: HA have been added to the hydrogel lenses prepared in the Lab using the two different method, e.g. IPN and CCB. The optical transmittance was measured in the wavelength range of 300~800 nm. The water content was measured by the gravimetric method using 0.9% NaCl saline solution. The amounts of adsorbed lysozyme on the contact lenses was analyzed by HPLC after incubation for 12h in artificial tears. Results: The water content of the HA added hydrogel contact lenses was increased, and the lens made by IPN method showed higher water content than the lens made by CCB method. The optical transmittance was over 90% both before and after addition of HA. Comparing the lysozyme adsorption reduction ratio, contact lens manufactured by IPN method was 60.0%, and the lens made by CCB method was 40.4%. Conclusions: CCB method is appropriate to distribute the functional material evenly throughout the lens, whereas IPN method is effective for the case of giving the functionality on the lens surface without phase separation.
