  • In order to verify the analytical methods predicting failure behavior of cracked piping, full-scale pipe tests are crucial in nuclear power plant piping. For this reason, series of international test programs have been conducted. However, full-scale pipe tests require expensive testing equipment and long period of testing time. The objective of this paper is to develop a test system which can economically simulate the full-scale pipe test regarding the integrity evaluation. This system provides the failure behavior of cracked pipe by testing a wide-plate specimen. The system provides the failure behavior of cracked pipe by testing a wide-plate specimen. The system was developed for the integrity evaluation of nuclear piping based on the methodology of hardware-in-the-loop (HiL) simulation. Using this simulator, the piping integrity can be evaluated based on the elastic-plastic behavior of full-scale pipe, and the high cost full-scale pipe test may be replaced with this economical system.

  • The specified tensile strength provided by the manufacturer is determined on the basis of the reliable lower limit ($X-3{\sigma}$ : X=average tensile strength, $\sigma$=standard deviation) obtained from the material test results. Most of these data, however, are based on the test results of 1 layer of FRP sheet. Also, the partial strength reduction factor for strengthening RC members with FRP is based on the small-scale model tests. But, the failure mechanisms of small-scale model tests are reported to be different from those of the full-scale tests. This paper present the test results of full-scale RC beams strengthened with multi-layer GFRP sheets up to 3 layer as well as the material tests. From the material tests, it was observed that the average tensile strengths of GFRP sheets are decreased as the number of layer are increased. Also the premature debonding failure of RC beams strengthened with multi-layer GFRP sheets are observed in inverse proportion to the number of GFRP sheets

  • One important element of the Leak-Before-Break analysis of nuclear piping is how to determine relevant fracture toughness (or the J-resistance curve) for nonlinear fracture mechanics analysis. The practice to use fracture toughness from a standard C(T) specimen is known to often give conservative estimates of toughness. To improve the accuracy, this paper proposes a new method to determine fracture toughness using a nonstandard testing specimen, curved wide-plate in tension. To show validity of the proposed curved wide-plate test, the J-resistance curve from the full-scale pipe test is compared with that from the curved wide-plate test and that from the C(T) specimen. It is shown that the J-resistance curve form the curved wide-plate tension test is similar to, but that from the C(T) specimen is lower than, the J-resistance curve from the full-scale pipe test. Further validation is performed by investigating crack-tip constraint conditions via detailed 3-D FE analyses, which shows that the crack-tip constraint condition in the curved wide-plate tension specimen is indeed similar to that in the full-scale pipe under bending.

  • Full-scale test facility is a huge system which is integrated by many subsystems. There are several critical elements in test facility system. Those elements may cause undesirably test article failure during testing. Therefore, test facility monitoring system which indicates the operating status of the critical elements is required for performing full-scale structural test. Selection of critical element and design of this monitoring system are explained in detail in this paper. The monitoring system developed are being applied to T-50 full-scale static test, will be expended for full-scale fatigue test in the near future.

  • The failure assessment for corroded pipeline has been considered with the full scale burst test and the finite element analysis. The burst tests were conducted on 762 mm diameter, 17.5 mm wall thickness and API 5L X65 pipe that contained specially manufactured rectangular corrosion defect. The failure pressure for corroded pipeline was measured by burst testing and classified with respect to corrosion sizes and corroded regions - the body, the girth weld and the seam weld of pipe. Finite element analysis was carried out to derive failure criteria of corrosion defect on the pipe. A series of finite element analyses were performed to obtain a limit load solution for corrosion defects on the basis of burst test. As a result, the criteria for failure assessment of corrosion defect within the body, the girth weld and the seam weld of API 5L X65 gas pipeline were proposed.

  • The transmission pipeline industry spends many millions of dollars annually performing inline inspections, excavating sites of possible corrosion, and repairing or replacing damaged sections of pipe. New criteria for evaluation the integrity of corroded pipe have been developed in recent years to help in controlling these costs. These new criteria vary widely in their estimates of integrity and the most appropriate criterion for a given pipeline is not always clear. This paper presents an overview, comparison and evaluation of acceptability criteria for corrosion defects in pipelines. By full scale burst tests, this paper have assessed the relative accuracy of each of theses criteria in predicting failure and remaining strength. Many of the criteria appear to be excessively conservative and indicate that defects must be repaired when none is needed, based upon burst test data.

  • In this paper, full-scale loading tests were performed on a rectangular segmental tunnel lining, which was assembled by steel composite segments, to investigate its load-bearing structural behavior and failure mechanism. The tests were also used to confirm the composite effect by adding concrete inside to satisfy the required performance under severe loading conditions. The design of the tested rectangular segmental lining and the loading scheme are also described to better understand the bearing capacity of this composite lining structure. It is found that the structural ultimate bearing capacity is governed by the bond capacity between steel plates and the tunnel segment. The failure of the strengthened lining is the consequence of local failure of the bond at waist joints. This led to a fast decrease of the overall stiffness and eventually a loss of the structural integrity.

  • In this study, the flexural behaviors of full-scale prestressed concrete box girders are experimentally investigated. Four girders were fabricated using two types of concrete (compressive strengths: 50 MPa and 70 MPa) and tested under four-point bending until failure. The measured parameters included the deflection, the stress and strain in concrete and steel bars, and cracks in concrete. The measurement results were used to analyze the failure mode, load-bearing capacity, and deformability of each girder. A finite element model is established to simulate the flexural behaviors of the girders. The results show that the use of high-performance concrete and reasonable combination of prestressed tendons could improve the mechanical performance of the box girders, in terms of the crack resistance, load-carrying capacity, stress distribution, and ductility.

  • Advanced overload protection module for full scale airframe structural test was developed by improving the existing overload protection module. When performing the full scale airframe structural test, overload can be applied to the test article due to unexpected situations such as system shutdown, test article failure, and deficiency of design strength. Therefore, the overload protection module is needed for protecting the test article in unexpected overload situations. In this paper, the function of the existing overload protection module was summarized for each component and the problems encountered when using it in structural test were analyzed in addition, the development of advanced overload protection module was described.

  • Since the columns with flexure-shear failure have lower ductility than those with flexural failure, shear capacity curve models shall be applied as well as flexural capacity curve in order to determine ultimate displacement for seismic design or performance evaluation. In this paper, a proposed modified shear capacity curve model is compared with the other models such as the CALTRANS model, Aschheim et al.'s model, and Priestley et al.'s model. Four shear capacity curve models are applied to the 4 full scale and 7 small scale circular bridge column test results and the accuracy of each model is discussed. It may not be fully adequate to drive a final decision from the application to the limited number of test results, however the proposed model provides the better prediction of failure mode and ultimate displacement than the other models for the selected column test results.
