  • A new species of Eudactylopus Scott A., 1909 is described from the southern coast of Korea. The specimens were collected using a light trap set overnight at the entrance near a pier. Eudactylopus yokjidoensis n. sp. is similar to E. andrewi Sewell, 1940 and E. spectabilis (Brian, 1923) in two key respects: similar length of proximal and distal inner setae on female P2 enp-2, and modification of two subapical setae on male P2 endopod. However, E. yokjidoensis can be differentiated from the two species by following morphological characteristics: in females, the length ratio of cephalothorax/2nd-4th thoracic somites combined is smaller in E. yokjidoensis than other two species (1 : 0.8 vs. 1 : 1); antennule has nine segments (vs. 7-segmented in E. andrewi); P2 to P4 each bears a process in medial distal margin of basis, while it is just smooth in E. spectabilis; in males; the length ratio of cephalothorax to 2nd-4th thoracic somites combined is smaller in E. yokjidoensis than other two species (1 : 0.6 vs. 1 : 1 in E. andrewi and 1 : 0.8 in E. spectabilis); and P5 exopod has a comb-like innermost seta, while it is bipinnate seta in E. spectabilis. To prove the Korean species of Eudactylopus to be new, full descriptions of both sexes are given here, and the claim is supported by distinct genetic differences between E. yokjidoensis and E. spectabilis (22.3-22.7%) in the mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase subunit I(mtCOI) sequence.

  • Field measurements of various structures have been conducted for many purposes. Measurement data obtained by field measurement is very useful to determine vibration characteristics including dynamic characteristics such as the damping ratio, natural frequency, and mode shape of a structure. In addition, results of field measurements and modal identification can be used for modal updating of FEM analysis, for checking the efficiency of damping devices and so on. This paper shows some examples of field measurements and modal identification for structural health monitoring. As the first example, changes of dynamic characteristics of a 15-story office building in four construction stages from the foundation stage to completion are described. The dynamic characteristics of each construction stage were modeled as accurately as possible by FEM, and the stiffness of the main structural frame was evaluated and the FEM results were compared with measurements performed on non-load-bearing elements. Simple FEM modal updating was also applied. As the next example, full-scale measurements were also carried out on a high-rise chimney, and the efficiency of the tuned mass damper was investigated by using two kinds of modal identification techniques. Good correspondence was shown with vibration characteristics obtained by the 2DOF-RD technique and the Frequency Domain Decomposition method. As the last example, the wind-induced response using RTK-GPS and the feasibility of hybrid use of FEM analysis and RTK-GPS for confirming the integrity of structures during strong typhoons were shown. The member stresses obtained by hybrid use of FEM analysis and RTK-GPS were close to the member stresses measured by strain gauges.

  • Various environmental problems due to the rapid industralization and urbanization have been worsened as much as to threaten the environmental restitution of globe and become a critical international issue. Korean government presented the green growth as a new state vision for 60 years afterwards and is making efforts to solve the environmental problems. Daegu metropolitan city has faced various environmental problems including overpopulation of cities, traffic pollution, household wastes and green zone problem because of urbanization for the last decades. As such urbanism continues, the quality of residential environment is rapidly deteriorating and the intensive use of land leads to increase of building area raising the temperature of cities. Therefore there have been demands for the healthy, pleasant and satisfying residential environment and the improvement of residential environment and such recognition rises from society in full measure. Nevertheless the current residential complex concentrates only on raising the efficiency of land use. Related laws in the past(Daegu Metropolitan City, Urban Planning Municipal Ordinance as of October 10, 2003) tried to prepare a standard to segmentalize the building-to-land ratio, floor area ratio and regulations of number of floors vertically, but currently it is abolished and the regulations are becoming eased. The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics of the floating wind before and after the vertical segmentation of residential areas(Daegu Metropolitan City, Urban Planning Municipal Ordinance as of October 10, 2003) by using KLAM_21, a model that enables analysing and predicting the flow and generation of clod wind, and to present a plan to improve the quality of residential areas afterwards when developing building lot and re-developing housing areas.

  • A cycloid reducer is one of the rotational velocity reduction equipments of machinery. It has advantages of the higher reduction ratio, the higher accuracy, the easier adjustment of transmission ratio and the smaller workspace than other kinds of reducer. A cycloidal plate gear is a main part of the cycloid reducer. Its tooth shape is peculiar because of gearing with the roller gear that has the several rollers on the circular line. And then it can be designed to contact all teeth to rollers. So, the cycloid reducer has the good characteristics in the dynamic properties and the zero-backlash in the contact motion. It can be used in robots, high-precision machines and high capacity machinery. This paper proposes a new approach for the shape design of the cycloidal plate gear and presents a Computer-Aided-Design program developed by the proposed method. The first part of this paper defines the two types of the cycloid reducers and explains their mechanisms. The second part defines the instant velocity centers for each type of the cycloid reducers and calculates the contact angles and the contact points by using te geometric relationships and the kinematical properties of the reducers. The third part generates the full shape of the cycloidal plate gear by the coordinate transformation technique. Finally, this paper presents two examples for the shape design of the cycloidal plate gear in order to prove the theory of the proposed method in this paper and the accuracy of the \"CycloGear Designer\".

  • Purpose: An impacted tooth is defined as a tooth that shows delayed eruption and is expected to erupt incompletely by clinical and radiograph examination despite it reaching its expected time of eruption. The aims of this study were to investigate the clinical and radiological characteristics and treatment duration and method of impacted teeth in Korean patients. Materials and Methods: For this study we used clinical records, study models, panoramic radiographs and intraoral photographs of patients who attended Gachon University Gil Hospital Orthodontic Department between 2005 and 2008. There were 164 patients with a total number of 202 impacted teeth. Results: Male patients shows a little more prevalence than female patients (1.13:1). The under 12 age group had the highest prevalence of tooth impaction, and the over 19 age group showed the least prevalence of tooth impaction. The ratio of tooth impaction between the left to right ratio was 1.73:1 and maxilla and mandible was 1.84:1. The impacted teeth were most commonly positioned buccally (76 cases, 41.5%). Full nap closure technique (108 cases, 81.2%)was most frequently used for attachment of surgical traction hooks. Maxillary canine impaction was most commonly encountered both in male and female patients. The mean treatment period was 12.2 months and the success rate of treatment was 90.3%. The canine tooth shows the longest treatment time and highest failure rate. The ankylosis was the major cause of failure. Conclusion: Impacted teeth most commonly show in left side maxilla in the under 12 age group. And it is most commonly positioned buccally. The mean treatment period was 12.2 months, and the success rate of treatment was 90.3%.

  • Motion estimation using one-bit transform and two-bit transform reduces the complexity for computation of matching error; however, the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) is degraded. Modified 1BT (M1BT) and modified 2BT (M2BT) have been proposed to compensate degraded PSNR by adding conditional local search. However, these algorithms require many additional search points in fast moving sequences with a block size of $16{\times}16$. This paper provides more efficient search method by preparing candidate blocks using the number of non-matching points (NNMP) than the conditional local search. With this NNMP-based search, we can easily obtain candidate blocks with small NNMP and efficiently search final motion vector. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm not only reduces computational complexity, but also improves PSNR on average compared with conventional search algorithm used in M1BT, M2BT and AM2BT.

  • Generally, compression and encryption procedures are performed independently in lossless image compression and encryption. When compression is followed by encryption, the compressed-stream should have the property of randomness because its entropy is decreased during the compression. However, when full data is compressed using image compression methods and then encrypted by encryption algorithms, real-time processing is unrealistic due to the time delay involved. In this paper, we propose to combine compression and encryption to reduce the overall processing time. It is method decomposing gray-scale image by means of quadtree compression algorithms and encrypting the structural part. Moreover, the lossless compression ratio can be increased using a transform that provides an decorrelated image and homogeneous region, and the encryption security can be improved using a reconstruction of the unencrypted quadtree data at each level. We confirmed the increased compression ratio, improved encryption security, and real-time processing by using computer simulations.

  • The change of strain-dependent hydraulic conductivity around mined panels due to subsidence is examined where normal and shear strains, modulus reduction ratio and joint spacing are major factors controlling the changes of hydraulic conductivity. Modulus reduction ratio and joint spacing are defined through RMR and RQD, respectively. Utilizing these two empirical parameters, changes of hydraulic conductivity values of a full gamut of rock mass conditions are determined. The change of hydraulic conductivity is not apparent in the near surface area and more significant change takes place in the area around mined panels. A zone of strong influence from the subsidence extends to a height of approximately 20m above mined panels. The shear strain does also play the role of increasing a hydraulic conductivity around mined panels. As RMR of rock mass decreases, a hydraulic conductivity is found to be increased and this means that subsidence in a poor rock with low RMR has a great effect on a hydraulic conductivity field.

  • The size of the ship's turning circle is influenced by various factors, such as block coefficient, underwater side shape, rudder area ratio, draft, trim and Froude's number. Most of them are already fixed on departure from a port. However, the ship's speed and the rudder angle are controllable factors which operations are able to change optionally during sailing. The DGPS measured the turning circles according to the ship's speed and the rudder angle. The maximum advances by slow and full ahead were 302m and 311m, and the maximum transfers were 460m and 452m, respectively. There occurs almost no difference in size of the turning circle by variation of the ship's speeds. When the rudder angles were changed to $10^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$, the maximum advances were 447m, 271m and 202m, and then also the maximum transfers 657m, 426m and 285m, respectively. The diameter of the tuning circle was decreased exponentially when the rudder angle was increased. The maneuverability was better when the direction of turning and propulsion of propeller are in the opposite direction rather than in the same one togetherm. The distance of the maximum transfer was always bigger than that of the maximum advance.
