  • The full containment Liquefied Natural Gas(LNG) storage tank is based on a double liquid container concept : two separate containers, one within the other, are capable of containing the LNG. The outer concrete tank provides comer protection(secondary containment) to withstand and safely contain any spill from the inner tank. The comer protection is installed on inside corner surface of outer concrete tank. Because of high and complex stresses, corner protection is designed by ASME section ⅧI Div. 2, Appendix 4 on behalf of API 620 which is main design code for LNG tank. Design guidelines to determine design factors such as liner thickness and knuckle radius are not well understood because Appendix 4 is the design method not based on equation but FEM. Recently, the volume of LNG tank shows a tendency to increase. So it is necessary to set up the design guidelines to cope with change of LNG tank capacity and height/diameter ratio. In this paper, optimum design of corner protection was performed and the design guidelines were suggested by the results of FEM for LNG tanks which have different capacities and height/diameter ratio.

  • In this paper, we propose a full digital capacitive sensing touch key reducing the effects due to the variations of resistance and clock frequency. The proposed circuit consists of two capacitive loads to measure and a resistor between the capacitive loads. The method measures the delays of the resistor and two capacitive loads, respectively. The ratio of the two delays is represented as the ratio of the two capacitive loads and is irrelative to the resistance and the clock frequency if quantization error is disregarded. Experimental results show the proposed scheme efficiently reduces the effects due to the variations of clock frequency and resistance. Further more the method has 1.04[pF] resolution and can be used as a touch key.

  • In this paper, the BER(Bit Error Rate) performance of a DVB-T2(Second Generation Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting System) in MISO(Multiple Input Single Output) transmission mode is evaluated by the computer simulation. In the DVB-T2 receiver, an IDD(Iterative Demapping and Decoder) technique is employed that exchanges extrinsic information between the demapper and the LDPC decoder. Simulation results show that the IDD-based DVB-T2 receiver in MISO transmission mode provides 2dB gain at BER of $10^{-4}$ but suffer from the frequency offsets between transmit antennas.

  • In this paper, vibration analysis of functionally graded nanoshell is studied based on the sinusoidal higher-order shear and normal deformation theory to account thickness stretching effect. To account size-dependency, Eringen nonlocal elasticity theory is used. For more accurate modeling the problem and corresponding numerical results, sinusoidal higher-order shear and normal deformation theory including out of plane normal strain is employed in this paper. The radial displacement is decomposed into three terms to show variation along the thickness direction. Governing differential equations of motion are derived using Hamilton's principle. It is assumed that the cylindrical shell is made of an arbitrary composition of metal and ceramic in which the local material properties are measured based on power law distribution. To justify trueness and necessity of this work, a comprehensive comparison with some lower order and lower dimension works and also some 3D works is presented. After presentation of comparative study, full numerical results are presented in terms of significant parameters of the problem such as small scale parameter, length to radius ratio, thickness to radius ratio, and number of modes.

  • This paper investigates the seismic response of lightweight acceleration-sensitive non-structural components (NSCs) mounted on irregular reinforced concrete (RC) primary structures (P-structures) using non-linear dynamic finite element (FE) analysis. The aim of this paper is to study the influence of NSC to P-structure vibration period ratio, peak ground acceleration, NSC to P-structure height ratio, and P-structure torsional behaviour on the seismic response of the NSCs. Representative constitutive models were used to simulate the behaviour of the RC P-structures. The NSCs were modelled as vertical cantilevers fixed at their bases with masses on the free ends and varying lengths so as to match the frequencies of the P-structures. Full dynamic interaction is considered between the NSCs and P-structures. A set of 21 natural and artificial earthquake records were used to evaluate the seismic response of the NSCs. The numerical results indicate that the behaviour of the NSCs is significantly influenced by the investigated parameters. Comparison between the FE results and Eurocode (EC8) predictions suggests that EC8 underestimates the response of NSCs mounted on the flexible sides of irregular RC P-structures when the fundamental periods and heights of the NSCs match those of the P-structures. The perceived cause of this discrepancy is that EC8 does not take into account the amplification in the dynamic response of NSCs induced by the torsional behaviour of RC P-structures.

  • This paper presents an novel multilevel inverter employing series connected transformers to reduce the harmonics of output voltage. The proposed inverter consists of several full-bridge modules and their corresponding transformers. Continuous output voltage levels can be generated from a suitable selection of turns ratio of transformer. And it appears an integral ratio to input DC source. Because of its series operation of transformers, output filter inductor is not required. The validity of the proposed system is verified through the experimental results using a 1.5 [kW] prototype, which can generate a 220 $[V_ac]$ output voltage from $[V_dc]$ input.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the acoustic characteristics of crying infants according to the communication intents such as hunger and pain in terms of acoustic differences in the fundamental frequency ($F_0$), jitter, shimmer, noise-to-harmonic ratio(NHR), habitual pitch, and intensity. The subjects were 20 healthy, normal infants, less than seven days old, from the city of Seoul and were born after 38 to 42 weeks(full term) of pregnancy. The sound of crying was recorded for three minutes. The crying due to pain was induced by means of the inborn metabolism error test, whereas the crying due to hunger was verified by means of the rooting reflex by waiting for the designated eating time. The results were as follows: (1) the fundamental frequency, noise-to-harmonic ratio(NHR), and intensity of the infants' crying due to pain was higher than that by hunger, showing a significant difference between the mean values. (2) the infants' crying due to hunger and that by pain did not have a significant difference in the mean jitter and shimmer values but both of them were largely outside of the normal threshold values(jitter by 1.04% and shimmer by 3.81%). This study was significant in the sense that it showed the acoustic characteristics of infants' crying from hunger and pain were very different from each other according to the communication intents in terms of the six acoustic parameters.

  • To investigate the seal dynamic instability for a misaligned and coned mechanical face seal, the finite difference approximation was employed to solve the modified Reynolds equation for an incompressible fluid and temperature dependent viscosity. Using the solution, the results for axial force, transverse moment, restoring moment, and ratio of the transverse moment and the restoring moment are calculated for the whole range from zero to full angular misalignment. The results indicate that the transverse moment due to the angular misalignment and coning terms affects considerably the dynamic instability of face seals. It is shown that the simplified treatment of Reynolds equation using the narrow seal approximation overestimate the ratio of the transverse moment to the restoring moment especially at touch.

  • IMO NOx levels are generally possible to meet by means of primary on-engine measures. Nevertheless further significant follow-on reductions are likely to require a secondary after-treatment technique. SCR system is currently the only available technology proven at full scale to meet the 90% NOx reduction levels. Accordingly, maybe the use of an SCR system on board ship provides the solution to minimize this primary pollutant without increasing fuel consumption. In order to develop a practical SCR system for marine application on board ship, a primary SCR system using urea was made. The SCR system was set up on the ship. employed a two-stroke diesel engine as a main propulsion. which is a training ship in KMU (Korea Maritime Univ.). The purpose of this paper is to report the results about the basic effects of the above system parameters which is investigated from practical application through its trial use. The degree of NOx removal depends on some parameters. such as the amount of urea solution added, space velocity. reaction gas temperature and activity of catalyst. The preliminary results from trial run are presented.

  • This study presents comparation of fixed and viscos boundary condition effects on three-dimensional earthquake response and performance of a RCC dam considering linear and non-linear response. For this purpose, Cine RCC dam constructed in Aydın, Turkey, is selected in applications. The Drucker-Prager material model is considered for concrete and foundation rock in the nonlinear time-history analyses. Besides, hydrodynamic effect was considered in linear and non-linear dynamic analyses for both conditions. The hydrodynamic pressure of the reservoir water is modeled with the fluid finite elements based on the Lagrangian approach. The contact-target element pairs were used to model the dam-foundation-reservoir interaction system. The interface between dam and foundation is modeled with welded contact for both fixed and viscos boundary conditions. The displacements and principle stress components obtained from the linear and non-linear analyses are compared each other for empty and full reservoir cases. Seismic performance analyses considering demand-capacity ratio criteria were also performed for each case. According to numerical analyses, the total displacements and besides seismic performance of the dam increase by the effect of the viscous boundary conditions. Besides, hydrodynamic pressure obviously decreases the performance of the dam.
