  • For the application of fuel cell, the content and concentration of impurities in hydrogen stream must be classified. The purpose of this study is to provide analysis tool for the determination of impurities in hydrogen with ultra high purity. To produce UHT hydrogen, we purified hydrogen gas by both getter-based catridge and liquid-nitrogen soaked catridge. We compare two methods and propose new method to know about what is in hydrogen stream.

  • Grain-boundary conduction in the fluorite-structure solid oxide electrolytes such as acceptor-doped zirconia and ceria were reviewed. The siliceous impurity, even several hundreds ppm, affects the ionic conduction across grain boundary to a great extent. Various approaches to improve grain-boundary conduction in fluorite-structure oxide electrolytes have been investigated, which include (1) the scavenging of siliceous phase by the reaction with second phase, (2) the gathering of intergranular siliceous phase into a discrete configuration and (3) the dewetting of intergranular liquid phase by post-sintering heat treatment.

Nanocomposite Ni-CGO Synthesized by the Citric Method as a Substrate for Thin-film IT-SOFC

  • Ni-ceria cermets have been extensively investigated as candidates for the anode in intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells. We have used the citric method to synthesize nanocomposite powders consisting of NiO (Ni metal content: $40{\sim}60%$ by volume) highly dispersed in $Ce_{0.9}Gd_{0.1}O_{1.95}$ (CGO). The microstructure characteristics and sintering behaviors of the nanocomposites were investigated. No impurity phases were observed and the shrinkage of these substrates matched well with that of a CGO electrolyte with a specific surface area of $11\;m^2/g$. Densification of the CGO electrolyte layer to $<5\;{\mu}m$ thickness was achieved by co-firing the laminated electrolyte with the porous NiO-CGO substrate at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 6 h.

연료유에 의한 선박 디젤엔진 손상에 관한 연구 (A Study on Types and Reasons of Engine Troubles Related to Fuel Oil)

  • 선박의 주기관이나 발전기관 등 디젤기관에서 사용하는 연료유는 원유를 정제해서 사용하고 있다. 석유화학공업에서 원유로부터 양질의 고급 휘발유를 많이 생산하기 위하여 촉매를 사용하는 유동접촉분해(FCC) 방법을 채택하여 원유를 분리하고 있다. 유동접촉분해 시 촉매의 주성분은 Si와 Al이며, 그 외에 Fe, Zn, Ti 등의 기본금속과 알칼리 금속 및 Ce, Nd, Ni, V 등의 희유금속이 함유되어 있다. 만일 선박에 사용되는 연료유에 이러한 성분의 촉매가 많이 혼입되어 Al, Si, Ni, V이나 Fe 등의 성분이 과다하게 되면 기관 부속품 마모가 아주 심하게 되고, 기관전체를 사용하지 못하게 되어 대형 해양 선박사고가 발생 할 수 있다. 다시 말해, 이런 성분이 많이 함유된 연료유를 기관에 사용하는 경우 연료펌프, 연료분사밸브, 실린더라이너, 피스톤링의 마모가 심하게 발생하게 된다. 따라서 이러한 사고를 예방하기 위하여 사고 발생현황에 대한 정확한 원인을 규명하고 밝히는 것이 중요하다. 아울러 그 사고의 원인이 자연적인 마모, 경년변화인가 또는 외적인 요인에 의한 사고인가에 따라 보험 보상 대상여부가 판명될 수 있어, 연료유로 인한 사고 원인규명은 아주 중요한 업무이다. 본 논문에서는 연료유 관련 사고가 발생한 선박을 대상으로 사고유형, 사고원인 및 예방법에 대한 검토를 하고 향후 선박의 디젤엔진에서 저질연료유 사용에 따른 문제점을 개선하도록 제시하고자 한다.

Thermal Evolution of BaO-CuO Flux as Sintering Aid for Proton Conducting Ceramic Fuel Cells

  • The eutectic melt of BaO-CuO flux is known to be a potential sintering aid for $Ba(Zr,Y)O_3$ (BZY) electrolyte for proton-conducting ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs). A density of BZY higher than 97% of theoretical density can be achieved via sintering at $1300^{\circ}C$ for 2 h using a flux composed of 28 mol% BaO and 72 mol% CuO. In the present study, chemical and structural evolution of BaO-CuO flux throughout the sintering process was investigated. An intermediate holding step at $1100^{\circ}C$ leads to formation of various impurity compounds such as $BaCuO_{1.977}$, $Ba_{0.92}Cu_{1.06}O_{2.28}$ and $Cu_{16}O_{14.15}$, which exhibit significantly larger unit cell volumes than the matrix. The presence of such secondary compounds with large lattice mismatch can potentially lead to mechanical failure. On the other hand, direct heating to the final sintering temperature produced CuO and $Cu_2O$ as secondary phases, whose unit cell volumes are close to that of the matrix. Therefore, the final composition of the flux is strongly affected by the thermal history, and a proper sintering schedule should be used to obtain the desired properties of the final product.

  • A strontium titanate ($SrTiO_3$)-based material with a perovskite structure is considered to be one of the promising alternatives to $LaCrO_3$-based materials since $SrTiO_3$ perovskite shows a high chemical stability under both oxidizing and reducing atmospheres at high temperatures. $SrTiO_3$ materials exhibit an n-type semiconducting behavior when it is donor-doped and/or exposed to a reducing atmosphere. In this work, $Sr_{1-x}La_xTi_{1-y}M_yO_3$ materials doped with $La^{3+}$ in A-sites and aliovalent transition metal ions ($M^{n+}$) in B-sites were synthesized by the modified Pechini method. The X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the materials synthesized by the Pechini process exhibited a single curbic perovskite-type structure without any impurity phases, and are tolerant, to some extent, to cation doping. The sintering behaviors of $Sr_{1-x}La_xTi_{1-y}M_yO_3$ in $H_2/N_2$ and air were characterized by dilatometry and microstructural observations. The electrical conduction mechanism and the dopant effect are discussed based on the defect structures and the electrical conductivities measured at various oxygen partial pressures and temperatures.

연료전지 자동차 탑재형 고순도 수소생산장치 (High Purity Hydrogen Generator for Fuel Cell Vehicles)

  • 본 논문은 연료전지 자동차용 10kWe급 정제일체형 메탄올개질기에 대한 연구결과이다. 이 개질기에서는 메탄올이 수증기와 반응하켜 수소를 포함한 혼합가스로 개질되고, 그 혼합가스는 다시 Palladium 합금막을 통하여 순수한 수소로 분리된다. 정제되고 남은 폐 가스중 가연성분들은 wire-mesh 형태의 연소촉매상에서 연소되어 개질반응에 필요한 열을 직접 공급함으로써 높은 메탄올 전환율, 고품질의 수소생산, 그리고 높은 시스템 열효율을 가능하게 한다. 동시에 이러한 개질, 분리 및 연소반응이 하나의 반응기에서 일어나 전체 시스템이 소형화될 수 있으며 운전이 용이한 장점도 있다. 본 연구팀에서 개발한 10kWe급 시스템은 운전연구를 통하여 수소생산량은 $8.2Nm^3/hr$ (10kWe급), 수소순도 99.999% 이상, CO 농도 5 ppm 미만, 총합열효율 81%, 초기기동 소요시간 20분, 부하변동웅답 1 분 이내를 달성했으며, 장처의 크기와 무게는 각각 16 L, 25 kg 이다.

연료전지용 LSGM 페로브스카이트계 전해질의 합성 및 특성 연구 (Synthesis and Characterization of LSGM Solid Electrolyte for Solid Oxide Fuel Cell)

  • The family of (Sr,Mg)-doped $LaGaO_3$ compounds, which exhibit high ionic conductivity at $600-800^{\circ}C$ over a wide range of oxygen partial pressure, appears to be promising as the electrolyte for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells. Conventional synthesis routes of (Sr,Mg)-doped $LaGaO_3$ compounds based on solid state reaction have some problems such as the formation of impurity phases, long sintering time and Ga loss during high temperature sintering. Phase stability problem especially, the formation of additional phases at the grain boundary is detrimental to the electrical properties of the electrolyte. From this point of view, we focused to synthesize single phase (Sr,Mg)-doped $LaGaO_3$ electrolyte at the stage of powder synthesis and to apply relatively low heat-treatment temperature using novel synthesis route based on combustion method. The synthesized powder and sintered bulk electrolytes were characterized by XRD, TG-DTA, FT-IR and SEM. AC impedance spectroscopy was used to characterize the electrical transport properties of the electrolyte with the consideration of the contribution of the bulk lattice and grain boundary to the total conductivity. Finally, relationship between synthesis condition and electrical properties of the (Sr, Mg)-doped $LaGaO_3$ electrolytes was discussed with the consideration of phase analysis results.

서로 다른 GDL을 이용한 고분자전해질 막 연료전지의 황불순물 복합피독에 의한 성능 저하 (The Performance Degradation of PEMFCs Fabricated with Different GDLs During Exposure to Simultaneous Sulfur Impurity Poisoning Condition)

  • 본 연구에서는 연료극 또는 공기극에 함유된 불순물인 황화합물의 도입을 차단할 수 있는 GDL을 제조하여, 이를 평가용 단위전지에 체결하여 $H_2S$$SO_2$를 연료극과 공기극에 각각 동시에 공급하여 PEMFC의 성능 저하 및 회복에 관한 연구를 수행하였다. 그 결과 $H_2S$$SO_2$의 농도가 증가함에 따라 전지의 성능이 감소하며 특히 10 ppm 이상의 농도에서는 10분 이내에 약 10-15% 정도 성능이 감소하였다. 특히 GDL 표면의 기공이 없는 CN-2 GDL을 체결한 단위전지의 경우 피독에 의한 성능 감소 속도가 더 빠른 것을 확인하였다. 그리고 단위전지 피독 후 황화합물이 혼합되지 않은 순수 가스를 1시간 이상 공급하였을 때 전지의 성능이 GDL의 종류에 따라 90%에서 95% 이상 회복되며 CN-1 GDL의 경우가 가장 회복이 우수하였다.

SELECTIVE REDUCTION OF ACTIVE METAL CHLORIDES FROM MOLTEN LiCl-KCl USING LITHIUM DRAWDOWN

  • In support of optimizing electrorefining technology for treating spent nuclear fuel, lithium drawdown has been investigated for separating actinides from molten salt electrolyte. Drawdown reaction selectivity is a major issue that requires investigation, since the goal is to remove actinides while leaving the fission products and other components in the salt. A series of lithium drawdown tests with surrogate fission product chlorides was run to obtain selectivity data with non-radioactive salts, develop a predictive model, and draw conclusions about the viability of using this process with actinide-loaded salt. Results of tests with CsCl, $LaCl_3$, $CeCl_3$, and $NdCl_3$ are reported here. Equilibrium was typically achieved in less than 10 hours of contact between lithium metal and molten salt under well-stirred conditions. Maintaining low oxygen and water impurity concentrations (<10 ppm) in the atmosphere was observed to be critical to minimize side reactions and maintain stable salt compositions. An equilibrium model has been formulated and fit to the experimental data. Good fits to the data were achieved. Based on analysis and results obtained to date, it is concluded that clean separation between minor actinides and lanthanides will be difficult to achieve using lithium drawdown.
