  • PIP is an abbreviation of 'Performance Improvement Package', which is a package that can improve performance by applying some design changes to existing aircraft. Boeing provides PIP applicable to B777-200, and Airbus provides PIP applicable to A350-900 as standard. PIP provided by Boeing and Airbus is a separate task, but it is expected to reduce fuel consumption by reducing drag through aerodynamic improvements. The PIP applied to the A350-900 includes work such as increasing Winglet Height and re-twisting Outboard Wing. This study is to verify the effect of PIP application of the A350-900 aircraft and use it as basic data for economic analysis. The aerodynamic improvement studies and expected effects of the PIP application were examined, and the actual flight data of the PIP-applied and the non-applied aircraft were compared to confirm the PIP application effect. This paper provides empirical results for the aviation industry on the PIP application efficiency as a method of improving fuel efficiency and reducing carbon emission.

  • In order to improve the combustion efficiency of the agricultural engine, an ignition timing control system was developed and tested. The control system was composed of the CDI ignition circuit, the microcomputer and the interfacing devices. In this study, the simplicity of the control system and the flexibility of the control strategy were emphasized for the precision, the applicability and the economical efficiency. The hardware was consisted in almost the same compositions as those of the automobile engine. The softwares of the control algorithms were developed to three types depending on the combination of the quasi-adaptive control and the open loop control which had the different spark advance equations according to the input variables such as engine speed, exhaust gas temperature and brake torque. The test results were summarized as follows: 1. By using the computer control system, the fuel consumption efficiency could be improved and the fuel consumption could be reduced by 0 to 57% compared to that of the fixed spark advance system. 2. The fuel consumption of the control mode with the quasi-adaptive algorithm was reduced by average 0.8% compared to that of the control mode without quasi-adaptive algorithm. 3. It was found that the control mode with the quasi-adaptive algorithm adopting single input of engine speed had most applicability and economical efficiency among three types of the control algorithms.

  • The demand for eco-friendly and higher fuel economy vehicles has helped develop eco-friendly and fuel-efficient vehicles such as hybrid vehicles. In a hybrid vehicle, the change in the battery charge after driving should be added to the fuel consumption as the equivalent fuel usage based on its own characteristics. Thus, the fuel efficiency of a hybrid vehicle cannot be improved simply by increasing the battery capacity. In this study, I attempt to improve the total fuel economy of a hybrid vehicle, including the equivalent fuel consumption, by modeling a fuel cell hybrid vehicle using Matlab Simulink, analyzing the usage zone of the fuel cell with the existing control strategy, and optimizing the power distribution of the battery and fuel cell in the main usage zone of the fuel cell.

  • This research deals with design and performance validation of eco-pedals that generate tactile pedal force to guide fuel saving driving behavior. For eco-pedal control logic, allowable fuel consumption at given driving speed is calculated based on pre-defined "allowable acceleration", and if the actual fuel consumption exceeds the allowable fuel consumption, then pedal force is activated. Pedal force should be recognizable to driver while not causing unpleasantness, and should not interfere with normal operation of pedal. Reaction forces that increase pedal stiffness abruptly, such as step and ramp shape, turn out to be not suitable due to pedal overshoot after release of reaction force. With this regards, vibration type reaction force is adopted, and its optimal frequency, magnitude and duration is determined through subjective evaluation with consideration to effect to fuel efficiency. Though highway and city driving test, it is demonstrated that fuel efficiency increase of 13% for highway and 15% for city is achieved.

  • Fuel consumption in fisheries is a primary concern due to environmental effects and costs to fishermen. Much research has been carried out to reduce the fuel consumption related to fishing operations. The fuel consumption of fishing gear during fishing operation is generally related to hydrodynamic resistance on the gear. This research demonstrates a new approach using numerical methods to reduce fuel consumption. The results from the simulation were verified with results that mirrored the model experiments. By designing the fishing gear using drawing software, the whole and partial resistance force on the gear can be calculated as a result of simulations. The simulation results will suggest suitable materials or gear structure for reducing the hydrodynamic forces on the gear while maintaining the performance of the gear. Furthermore, the efficiency of low energy used trawl as economic point of view will be dealt. This research will helpful to reduce the GHG emissions from fishing operations and lead to reduce fishing costs due to fuel savings.

  • In this study, the performance of a low-floor midsize bus under development is predicted through simulations. To predict the vehicle's acceleration, maximum speed, and uphill driving performance, a forward simulator which calculates the vehicle power is developed. Also we verify the forward simulator by comparing simulations and test result for benchmarking vehicle. To predict the fuel consumption, we use a backward simulator for a specified road cycle. However, to predict the fuel consumption using the backward simulation the engine fuel-consumption map is needed. The engine fuel-consumption map extracting data from a similar sized diesel engine is used by re-scaling the maximum torque. As a result, we simulate the vehicle's forward performance with a new engine. Further, we simulated the backward performance to optimize the fuel efficiency and gearshift timing.

  • Operating points of a fuel cell system (FCS) can be shifted to its high-efficiency region by hybridization in a fuel cell hybrid vehicle (FCHV), so the hydrogen can be saved. In this paper, the hydrogen consumption of an FCHV is compared to that of a fuel cell vehicle (FCV). A power management strategy is applied to the FCHV and the related simulation is carried out. The concept of equivalent hydrogen consumption is introduced in order to consider the effect of the difference between initial and final battery SOC on the total hydrogen consumption.

  • To obtain higher power efficiency of Residential Power Generation system(RPG), it is needed to operate system on optimized stoichiometric ratios of fuel and air. Stoichiometric ratios of fuel/air are closely related to efficiency of stack, reformer and power consumption of Balance Of Plant(BOP). In this paper, optimizing stoichiometric ratios of fuel/air are conducted through systematic experiments and modeling. Based on fundamental principles and experimental data, constraints are chosen. By implementing these optimum values of stoichiometric ratios, power efficiency of the system could be maximized.

  • In the cathode channel of a PEM fuel cell, the local concentration of oxygen near the gas diffusion layer (GDL) decreases in streamwise direction due to chemical reactions, which degrades the efficiency of the oxygen consumption and overall fuel cell efficiency. We numerically studied the influence of the swirling flow generated by a slanted groove mixer (SGM) on the concentration distribution of oxygen. We found that the swirling flow can increase the concentration of oxygen near the GDL, and subsequently improves the oxygen consumption rate.

  • Great attentions are paid to HSDI diesel engine for passenger cars because of its high thermal efficiency. The most interesting research in HSDI diesel engine developments is focused on applying common rail system as a fuel injection equipment. In this study, a series of tests are carried out to investigate the effect of injection pressure variation on the smoke and fuel concluded in a small HSDI diesel engine with common rail system. As a result of this study it is concluded that there is an optimum rail pressure dependent on combustion system such as nozzle type, combustion chamber geometry.
