  • In this paper, the development and performance analysis of a fuel cell-powered unmanned aerial vehicle is described. A fuel cell system featuring 1 kW proton exchange membrane fuel cell combined with a highly pressurized fuel supply system is proposed. For the higher fuel consumption efficiency and simplification of overall system, dead-end type operation is chosen and each individual system such as purge system, fuel supply system, cooling system is developed. Considering that fluctuation of exterior load makes it hard to stabilize fuel cell performance, the power management system is designed using a fuel cell and lithium-ion battery hybrid system. After integration of individual system, the performance of unmanned aerial vehicle is analyzed using data from flight and laboratory test. In the result, overall system was properly operated but for more duration of flight, research on weight lighting and improvement of fuel efficiency is needed to be progressed.

  • This study describes the characteristics of combustion and exhaust emission in the special engine applying a fuel reactivity controlled compression ignition (RCCI) concept with two different energizing type (solenoid and piezoelectric) injectors for diesel injection. A diesel-gasoline mixed dual-fuel reactivity controlled compression ignition concept is demonstrated as a promising method to achieve high thermal efficiency and low emission in internal combustion engines for transportation vehicles. For investigating the combustion characteristics of RCCI, engine experiments were performed in a light-duty diesel engine over a range of injection timing and mixing rate of gasoline in mass. It was investigated that by increasing the nozzle hole diameter, increasing the combustion pressure and the net indicated mean effective pressure. $NO_x$ and soot can be reduced by advancing start of injection in 84 mixing rate of gasoline in mass. The resulting operation showed that light duty engine could achieve 48 percent net indicated efficiency and 191[g/kW-hr] net indicated specific fuel consumption with lower levels of nitrogen oxides and soot.

승용차의 이산화탄소(CO2) 배출특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on Characteristics of Carbon Dioxide Emissions from Passenger Cars)

  • Automotive exhaust is suspected to be one of the major reasons of the rapid increase in greenhouse effect gases in ambient air. As the concerns regarding global worming were increased, the pressure on mobile source greenhouse gas (GHG) emission were also increased. Carbon Dioxides contribute over 90% of total GHG emission and the mobile source occupies about 20% of this $CO_2$ emission. In this study, in order to investigate $CO_2$ emission characteristics from gasoline and LPG passenger cars (PC), which is the most dominant vehicle type in Korea, 53 vehicles were tested on the chassis dynamometer. $CO_2$ emissions and fuel consumption efficiency were measured. The emission characteristics by fuel type, model year, mileage, vehicle speed and transmission type were also discussed. Test modes used in this study were NIER 10 modes and CVS-75 mode, which have been used for developing emission factors and testing new vehicles respectively. The results of this study showed that the main factors which have significant influences on the $CO_2$ emissions are fuel type, transmission type, displacement of vehicle and mileage. The correlation between $CO_2$ emission and FE was also determined by comparing $CO_2$ emission and fuel consumption efficiency. The overall results of this study will greatly contribute to domestic greenhouse gas emissions calculation and designing national strategies for climate change.

OPTIMIZATION ON VEHICLE FUEL CONSUMPTION IN A HIGWAY BUS USING VEHICLE SIMULATION

  • This paper presents a numerical approach to optimizing vehicle fuel economy in a higway bus. The method described is based on using a commercial software vehicle simulation to identify the relative efficiency of each of the vehicle systems, such as the engine hardware, engine software calibration, transmission, cooling system and ancillary drives. The simulation-based approach offers a detailed understanding of which vehicle systems are underperforming and by how much the vehicle fuel economy can be improved if those systems are brought up to best-in-class performance. In this way, the optimum vehicle fuel economy can be provided to the vehicle customer. A further benefit is that the simulation requires only a minimum number of vehicle testing for initial validation, with all subsequent field test cycles performed in software, thereby reducing development time and cost for the manufacturer.

  • (1) 디이젤기관용 대체연료로서 혼합유가 디이젤유의 연료에 대한 특성을 검토하였다. (2) 혼합유로서 디이젤기관을 운전할 경우 배기가스량은 디이젤유보다 평균 8% 정도 많음을 나타내었다. (3) 혼합유로서 디이젤기관을 운전할 경우 디이젤유에 비하여 연료소비량이 약 3% 정도 증가하였다. (4) 정미열효율에 있어서는 디이젤유와 혼합유는 거의 비슷한 상태를 나타내었다.

  • The design of an air compressor-driving quadratic linear actuator in a fuel cell BOP system is studied using orthogonal techniques. The approach utilizes an orthogonal array for design of 'experiments', i.e. the scheme for numerical simulations using a finite element method. Eco-friendly energy is increasingly important due to the depletion of fossil fuels and environmental pollution. Among the new energy sources, fuel cell is spotlighted as renewable energy because it produces few dusts. The air compressor performance is directly related to the efficiency of the fuel cell BOP system has high power consumption. In this paper, an optimized technique using an orthogonal matrix is applied to the design problem to improve the performance of quadratic linear actuator.

PC-ECU를 이용한 SI 기관의 비정상상태 정밀공연비 제어 (Precise Air-Fuel Ratio Control on Transient Conditions with the PC-ECU in SI Engine)

  • In a SI engine, three-way catalyst converter has the best efficiency when A/F ratio is near the stoichiometry. The feedback control using oxygen sensors in the commercial engine has limits caused by the system delays. So it is necessary to control fuel quantity in accordance with intake air amount in order to reduce exhaust emission and improve the specific fuel consumption. Precise A/F ratio control requires measurement of air amount with respect to the cylinder and injection fuel according to the air amount In this paper, we applied nonlinear fuel injection model and developed the algorithm of A/F ratio control. This algorithm includes the methods of measurement of transient air mass flowing into each cylinder, of calculation of injection pulse width for measured air mass, and the method of feedback and engine control by using lambda sensor. Also we developed control program for IBM-PC by using C++ Builder, and tested it in the commercial engine.

  • Improving fuel consumption, particularly that of commercial vehicles, has become a global concern. The reduction in logistics cost has been a key issue in efforts to improve fuel economy and efficiency of transportation equipment. Typical technologies for reducing reduce fuel usage include air resistance reduction technologies, tire rolling resistance technologies, and idle technologies among others. Air resistance technology is a highly effective method that can be easily applied in a short period. As with air resistance technology, several devices involving side skirt, boat tail and gap fairing have been developed based on an analytical 3-D modeling technique for reducing air resistance attributed to the vehicle configuration. The devices were on a 45 feet tractor-trailer and the emission test was done using PEMS equipment. Fuel economy was evaluated by introducing several devices to reduce outer air resistance. The test was conducted by changing the experimental method of SAE J1321 Joint TMC/SAE Fuel Consumption Test Procedure - Type II test. As a result, air resistance decreased by at least 15 % and fuel economy improved by at least 13 %. This study sought to reduce greenhouse gas and improve fuel economy by applying several devices to a test vehicle to lower air resistance.

국내 유통 첨가제의 배출가스 및 연비특성 (Characteristics of Emission and Fuel Economy of Fuel Additives in the Domestic Market)

  • In the past, drivers bought a fuel additives to treat a combustion chambers or injector nozzles for carbon or gum deposit at market. But, nowadays, as raised cost of fuel for a vehicle the consumers also start focusing on a function of fuel additives that increases fuel economy of one. Some fuel additive manufacturers and agents advertise that their goods make a car it's initial state. This paper shows data for 3 years that were acquired during test for registration of an additive in domestic. The data were sorted according to kind of vehicle, kind of fuel, test mode, CO, HC, NOx, PM, total emission, fuel economy and accumulated mileage. And than by using simple linear regression analysis changes according to accumulated mileage was displayed. Normal distribution and histogram of rate of increase and decrease were displayed. the analyzed data indicated that a fuel additive maintain and make a car the first state of one but can't make a car be batter than initial the one.

  • We presented the methods calculating the reduction efficiency of nitrogen oxide for the low $NO_x$ burner as the pollution prevention facilities. The standard $NO_x$ concentration was used on the emission factor of LNG, $3.7g/m^3$. The $NO_x$ reduction efficiency based on the $NO_x$ concentration was presented and the relationships between the $NO_x$ concentration and the emission factor or the specific heat emission factor were derived. These results could be accurately reflected on calculating the amount of the nitrogen oxide emissions. In addition, according to the arrangement of the low $NO_x$ burners the methods of applying their $NO_x$ reduction efficiency were proposed. The $NO_x$ reduction efficiency for the facilities consisting of the low $NO_x$ burners and the non-low $NO_x$ burners could be estimated with information about the reduction efficiency of each low $NO_x$ burners, the fuel consumption rate, and the heating value of fuel.
