  • The psychometric properties of a preliminary version of the Friendship Quality Scale(FQS) were examined with data collected from 300 3rd and 5th grade children. Scores on the Self-Perception Scale were obtained to examine convergent validity. The FQS assesses friendship quality in 9 sub-scales, inclusive of 6 friendship functions. Factor analysis confirmed the 9 sudscale structure of the FQS for 5th graders, but 4 friendship functions instead of 6 were a better fit for 3rd graders. Except for one, the sub-scales showed relatively high internal consistency ; Cronbach ${\alpha}$ ranged from .70 to .93. Convergent validity was indicated by correlations between self-perception and sex differences in friendship functions. Friendship functions and satisfaction were related to self-perceptions in social acceptance, behavior, and global self-worth. Girls reported higher friendship functions and satisfaction in friendship than boys.

  • This study investigated children's friendship factors such as number of friends, friendship quality, and friends' characteristics as a function of children's sociometric status. The concordance between children's and their friends'perceptions of friendship quality was examined. Subjects were fifth grade students recruited from two public schools. The peer nomination index assessed peer rejection and acceptance. Positive and negative nominations as well as social preference identified children into rejected and popular groups. Children who nominated each other on their list of friends were considered mutual friends. Children reported the quality of their friendships using the friendship quality scale. The results showed that rejected children had fewer mutual friends compared to popular children. Rejected children as well as their friends perceived their friendships less positively. Moreover, rejected children's perception showed lower correlations with their friends'perceptions than popular children's perceptions. Furthermore, rejected children were similar with friends in respect to peer rejection level. It was concluded that rejected children's problems in their peer group and dyadic friendships may mutually influence each other. The findings from this study highlight the need for future research on friendship quality and psychosocial adjustment for rejected children.

A total of 373 college students (mean age=20.45, 53.6% girls) responded to questionnaires IPPA-R(Raja, McGee & Stanton, 1992) and IPIP(Goldberg, 1999). Pearson Correlation and regression analysis were used for data analysis 1) Both male and female students who have positive experiences with parents positive experiences with their friends. 2) For male college students, extroversion, openness to experience, agreeableness and conscientiousness were positively correlated with friendship quality. However, for female students, only extroversion and agreeableness were positively associated with friendship quality whereas neuroticism was negatively associated with friendship quality. 3) A good relationships with significantly interacted with conscientiousness of personality traits in predicting male students' friendship quality. For female college students, the moderating effect of extroversion was found in the link between relationship with mother and friendship quality.

  • Friendship network characteristics, friendship quality, and popularity status were examined for 298 first and third graders(M age=7 yrs., 3 mo. and 9 yrs., 2 mo.). Children provided friendship nominations and responded to the Friendship Quality Scale(Rhee & Koh, in press). Results indicated that 3rd graders had larger friendship networks and more supportive friendship than 1st graders, and girls reported more reciprocal friends and more supportive friendships than boys. The best predictor for friendship satisfaction was a reliable alliance. The higher the reciprocity in friendship choice, the higher the perception of friendship functions and satisfaction. Unpopular children were less likely than popular children to have a reciprocal friend, although friendless children were found in both groups.

  • This study investigated the moderating effects of the number of friends and quality of friendship on the associations between withdrawal and loneliness as well as withdrawal and social anxiety. The subjects were 678 of fifth and sixth grade primary school children recruited from a public school in Bucheon city. A peer nomination inventory was used to assess withdrawal. Children were given a classroom roster and asked to nominate three classmates who fit each description. Children reported the quality of their friendships using the Friendship Quality Scale. Each child was asked to indicate his or her one best friend and rate how accurately a sentence describe done of their best friends on the scale. In addition, children completed questionnaires to assess the loneliness and social anxiety. The results revealed that the association between withdrawal and loneliness was not significant for children who had the large number of friends and high quality friendship. The association between withdrawal and social anxiety was stronger for the children who had the lower levels of friendship quality. However, there was no moderating effect of the number of friends on the association between withdrawal and social anxiety. These results imply that the large number of friends and high quality friendships could be protective factors for children who are withdrawn.

Conflicts between popular-average pairs resulted in equal outcomes more often and unresolved outcomes less often than rejected-average pairs. (3) There were significant correlations between friendship quality, conflict resolution strategies, and conflict outcomes by peer status.

  • This study investigated the relationship between the sociometric status(1) of a target child and the target child's most preferred peer, and (2) of the quality of their friendship between the two peers. Each of the subjects (238 boys, 6, 8, and 10 years of age) nominated 3 preferred peers answered questions about the preferred peers with the use of the Friendship Quality Scales. Results indicated that the sociometric status of children aged 8 and 10 were positively related to that of their most preferred peers. Reciprocal friendships, however, were more frequently observed among children in high sociometric status compared with those in low sociometric status. The quality of friendships among popular children was higher than that of rejected children. The quality of friendships between popular and rejected children was lower than friendship between rejected and rejected children.

  • Relationships between peer bullying/victimization, friendship, and self- perception were examined in a sample of 279 fourth, fifth, and sixth grade elementary school students. Data on peer bullying/victimization was collected by peer report using Korean Peer Nomination Inventory; children reported for themselves on the Friendship Quality Scale and the Self-Perception Scale. Children who were involved in peer bullying/victimization reported fewer reciprocal friends and friends similar to themselves; they also showed low friendship quality. Peer victimization was predictable from low perception of social acceptance and friendship satisfaction, while intimacy with friends and high confidence on physical ability predicted peer bullying.
