The Perceived Controllability of Stress Situations and Children's Coping with Hassles (스트레스 상황에 대한 지각된 통제감과 아동의 스트레스 대처행동)

  • This study investigated characteristics of children's coping behaviors in the context of perceived controllability of stress in hassles with parent(s), friend-alienation, friend-conflict, and in learning situations. The subjects were 489 sixth grade children selected from seven elementary schools in Seoul. Statistical analysis was by ANOVA, Scheffe' test, and MANOVA. Major findings were that (1) Active, passive, aggressive, and avoidant coping differed by perceived controllability of stress in all 4 stress situations. The children who perceived a higher level of controllability were more active, and less passive, aggressive, and avoidant in coping with each hassle. (2) Perceived controllability was higher in learning related than in friend-conflict situations. Active, passive, and social support seeking coping behavior was higher in learning related stress situations than in friend-conflict situations. Avoidant coping behavior was lower in learning related than in friend-conflict situations.

Correlates of Social Support, Family Function, and Conditions of Home Care Nursing in Family Caregivers (가정간호대상자 가족의 사회적 지지와 가족기능, 가정간호 특성 간의 관계)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the factors related to the social support, family and friend support as well as home care nurse support, in family caregivers of patients with home care service. Method: The participants were 111 family caregivers of patient, who were receiving home care services from home health care centers of 3 different general hospitals located in Seoul. The data was collected, using self-administered questionnaires. Result: The level of family and friend support varied significantly according to patients' mental status, period of home care nursing, frequency of home care service, caregiver's education level, family income, and family functioning level. On the other hand, home care nurse support varied significantly according to patients' mental status, caregiver's age, existence of interchangeable family caregivers, and family functioning level. There was a significantly positive correlation between the social support the family caregivers' perceived and family function while there was a negative correlation between family and friend support and the period of home care service. Conclusion: Thus, the establishment of nursing interventional program, with understanding of their social support, is needed for both patients and their caregivers.

Effects of the Leisure Activity and Social Support of the Elderly on Their Psychological Well-Being (노인의 여가활동과 사회적 지지가 심리적 복지감에 미치는 영향)

  • The Purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the leasure activity and social support of the elderly people on their psychological well-being and the moderating role of social support. For this study, data were collected from 347 old people participating in the leasure activity programs operated by 10 facilities for the aged in Seoul, using structured questionnaires. Hierarchical regression analysis technique was used as a main data analysis method for hypothesis test. This study found that productive leasure activity had a beneficial effect on psychological well-being of the elderly measured in terms of life satisfaction and loneliness, whereas consumptive leasure activity had a positive effect only on life satisfaction; that, with regard to social support, spouse support had the most important effect on life satisfaction, followed by friend support and children support, whereas friend support had the most important effect on loneliness, followed by spouse support; and that the relationship between productive leasure activity and life satisfaction was moderated by spouse support and friend support, whereas the relationship between productive leasure activity and loneliness was moderated by friend support.

The Effect of Social Support for Adolescents on Self Management, Appearance Satisfaction and Fashion Opinion Leadership (사회적 지지가 청소년의 자기관리, 외모만족도 및 유행의사선도력에 미치는 영향)

  • When adolescents undergo the period of transition, they need to promote self-confidence from social support by parents, teachers or friends. It was believed that boosting subjective perception on their main areas of interest such as academic performance, appearance and fashion will result in happiness. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of social support including family support, teacher support and friend support on self management, appearance satisfaction and fashion opinion leadership. A total of 412 questionnaires from the middle and high school students living in or near Seoul were collected and analyzed. The results indicated that teacher support and family support had a positive effect on self-management and family support had a positive effect on appearance satisfaction. Furthermore, friend support had a positive effect on fashion opinion leadership. In conclusion, implications for promoting self-confidence related to self-management, appearance satisfaction and fashion opinion leadership with the help of social support are suggested.

A Study on the Correlation between Perceived Social Support and Health Behavior of Girl High School Students in All Girl Schools (청소년의 건강행위와 사회적 지지에 관한 연구 -일 지역 여고생을 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between social support and health behavior in girl high school students in all girl schools. The subjects were 190 girls in 2 Kunsan schools. The instruments used for this study were the social support scale developed by Park(1985) and the health behavior scale developed by Walker etc(1987). As modified by Lee & Han(1996). The data were analysed by correlation coefficient, regression coefficient using an SAS program. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The mean score of social support was 3.96 and the mean score of health behavior was 3.33. 2. 1) General characteristics were related to the degree of social support: personality, spending money, friend number, exercise(p<0.05). 2) General characteristics were related to the degree of health behavior: personality, spending money, friend number, exercise, stress(p<0.05). 3. The hypothesis of this study, 'The higher the degree of social support perceived by the student, the higher the degree of health behavior' was supported(r=0.5730, p=0.0001). For these subjects, there was a significant relationship between social support and the degree of health behavior. Nurses should plan interventions in promotion health behavior with social support as a significant factor in adolescents. If so, their coping ability and well- being may be promoted.

The Effect of Social Support on Adolescents' School-Related Adjustments: The Mediation Effect of Life Satisfaction (사회적지지가 남녀청소년의 학교적응에 미치는 영향: 삶의 만족도의 매개효과)

  • The main purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between social support, life satisfaction, and school-related adjustments of adolescents. The participants were 260 junior high school students (140 male and 120 female students) from the Seoul area. They completed questionnaires on social support, life satisfaction, and school-related adjustments. The collected data were analyzed using basic descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, and a multiple regression analysis. Baron and Kenny's method was used and examined, and the Sobel test was performed to determine the mediating model's significance. It was adapted to SPSS ver. 19.0 for Windows. The major findings were as follows: first, social support (parents/teacher/friend) was positively correlated with the adolescents' school-related adjustment. Second, the adolescents' life satisfaction was also positively correlated with the adolescents' school-related adjustments. In addition, social support was positively correlated with life satisfaction. It was further found that the adolescents' life satisfaction tended to play a perfectly/partially mediating role between social support and school-related adjustment; that is, social support (parents/teacher/friend) was shown to have not only a direct effect, but also an indirect effect through the adolescents' life satisfaction, on the school-related adjustments. These results clearly indicated that adolescents' life satisfaction plays a crucial role in the relationship between social support and the adolescents' school-related adjustments.

Peer Relationships as Risk and Protective Factors in the Behavior Problems of Elementary School Children (학령기 행동문제의 위험요인과 보호요인으로서의 또래관계)

  • This study examined relationships between peer variables and externalizing behavior problems of 290 4th and 5th grade children in elementary school. The children completed the Friendship Quality Scale and the peer nomination questionnaire. Parents and teachers rated behavior problems of children using the Connors' Rating Scale. Results indicated that rejected children had more behavior problems than popular, average, or neglected children. Socio-emotional supports from a close friend and satisfaction with the friend were negatively related to behavior problems. Behavior problems were mainly predicted by low peer acceptance, and behavior problems of rejected children were negatively and strongly related to socio-emotional supports of a close friend. In conclusion, peer rejection was a risk factor and a friend's support was a protective factor for externalizing behavior problems in 4th and 5th graders.

Predictors of Health Status in Patients with Hemodialysis: A Two-year Longitudinal Study (혈액투석 환자의 건강상태 예측요인: 2년 종단연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of physical, psychological, and social factors on the health status of patients undergoing hemodialysis using longitudinal data. Methods: Two surveys were conducted within a period of two-year. A total of 75 patients participated in both surveys. Eight variables including symptoms, treatment belief, hope, meaning-focused coping, family support, friend/peer support, healthcare provider support, and health status were measured. Data were analyzed by paired t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and hierarchical multiple regressions. Results: The mean age of the participants was 47.31 and the average duration of dialysis was 8.27 years. There was no difference in scores on perceived health status between the two year-interval surveys. The two-year follow-up on perceived health status was correlated with baseline perceived health status, friend/peer support, meaning-focused coping, hope, and symptoms. As the result of the regression analysis, friends/peer support (${\beta}=.31$, p=.013) and baseline perceived health status (${\beta}=.30$, p=.020) were found to be significant predictors of subsequent health status which explained 39.0% of the variance. Conclusion: This study suggests the importance of psychosocial resources for positive health outcomes in patients with a chronic illness. Nursing interventions aimed to provide renal peer support need to be developed and tested.

Causal Relationships between School Adjustment of Middle School Students and Related Variables (중학생의 학교적응 관련요인의 인과적 구조분석)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the causal relationship of familial factors (parental acceptance, autonomy, and family satisfaction), social support (teacher's support and friend's support), school achievement, self-concept, and school adjustment. Based on preceding research, this study established a path model of school adjustment and its related variables. Methods: Two thousand six hundred and twenty nine middle school students participated in this study. Data were collected by a visit-survey with an organized questionnaire and was analyzed by the SPSS and AMOS programs. Results: Self-concept showed a significantly direct influence to school adjustment while both family satisfaction and school achievement directly and indirectly influenced school adjustment. Parental acceptance, autonomy, and social support indirectly influenced school adjustment. Conclusion: These results imply that first, family satisfaction, and self-concept are essential to solve the problems of school adjustment. Especially friend's support, teacher's support and school achievement should help improve the self-concept and school adjustment. Second, a variety of programs are available for schools to employ in an effort to provide interventions for students who demonstrate school maladjustment. Finally, it is necessary for family, school and society members to comprehensively cooperate to improve school adjustment.

A Study on the Influence of Disability of Elderly on Successful Aging - A Moderating Effect of Social Support Network - (노인의 장애유무가 성공적 노화에 미치는 영향 연구 -사회적 관계망의 조절효과-)

  • The purpose of this research is to suggest implications for the elderly with disability by taking a look at the influence of disability of elderly on successful aging and a moderating effect of social support network. This study analyzed the $4^{th}$ panel data from KReIS and the subjects for this research are 3,906 of elderly aged over 65 years. For the statistical analysis, the IBM SPSS Statistics v23.0 program was utilized. Technical statistics was verified, multiple regression analysis was used in order to take a look at the effects of moderating variable. The results of this research are as the following: Firstly, the disability of elderly had an negative effect on successful age. Secondly, as a social support network, friend & neighborhood network and family network had an positive effect on successful age. Thirdly, friend & neighborhood network among social support network had a moderating effect on successful aging. In other words, the more disabled the elderly are, the lower the level of successive aging became, it turned out that the bigger the social support of friend & neighborhood network, the less the negative effect of disability on successive aging. On the basis of the result, it was proposed a case management for the elderly with disability, assurance of mobility right, and self-help meeting program for social support network.
