The frictional properties of automotive brake pads with four different ceramic materials such as magnesia, hematite, alumina, and zircon were investigated. A Krauss type friction tester using gray iron disks was used to examine the friction coefficient, intensity of friction force oscillation, and the tribe-surfaces. Results showed that the friction coefficient increased as the hardness of abrasives increases. Friction oscillation was also increased with hardness of the abrasives. However, the friction materials containing less abrasive particles produced stable friction films on the sliding surface. The transition between two-body and three body abrasion during sliding also played a crucial role in destructing the friction film on the pad surface and in determining various frictional properties.

An NAO friction material (low-steel type) containing 15 ingredients was investigated to study the role of transfer film on the friction characteristics. The friction material specimens with extra 100% of each ingredient were tested using a pad-on-disk type tribotester. A non-destructive method of measuring the transfer film was developed by considering the electric resistance of the transfer film. Results showed that solid lubricants and iron powder assisted transfer film formation on the rotor surface. Average friction coefficient was independent of transfer film thickness in this experiment. On the other hand, the thick transfer film on the rotor surface reduced the amplitude of friction oscillation under temperature conditions ( 250$^{\circ}C$) that transfer film forms.
In order to examine the possibility of using a cavity as a passive device for reduction of skin friction and heat transfer, an intensive parametric study over a broad range of the cavity depth and length at different Reynolds numbers is performed for both laminar and turbulent boundary layers in the present study. Direct and large eddy simulation techniques are used for turbulent boundary layers at low and moderate Reynolds numbers, respectively. for both laminar and turbulent boundary layers over a cavity, a flow oscillation occurs due to the shear layer instability when the cavity depth and length are sufficiently large and it plays an important role in the determination of drag and heat-transfer increase or decrease. For a cavity sufficiently small to suppress the flow oscillation, both the total drag and heat transfer are reduced. Therefore, the applicability of a cavity as a passive device for reduction of drag and heat transfer is fully confirmed in the present study. Scaling based on the wall shear rate of the incoming boundary layer is also proposed and it is found to be valid in steady flow over a cavity.

Friction characteristics of phenolic resin-based friction composites containing threedifferent relative amounts of graphite and zirconium silicate were investigated by using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. Constant temperature test and constant interval test at three different initial temperatures(100. 200, 300$^{\circ}C$) were performed to examine the effects of friction heat on friction characteristics at elevated temperature. The friction composite(FMO.7) with higher content of ZrSiO$_4$showed unstable friction force at higher temperature and resulted in larger fluctuations of vibration during friction test. The abrasive action of ZrSiO$_4$in friction composite impeded stable transfer film and induced higher friction heat at friction interface. Friction oscillations according to the temperature were associated with the formation of transfer film(i'd body layer) on the friction composite and the counter part.

Tribological properties of friction materials containing different volume ratios of solid lubricants (graphite and MoS$_2$) were studied using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. Morphology and thickness of the friction film were carefully examined to correlate the friction performance with the property of the friction film. Results showed that the friction materials containing 16vo1. % of graphite and 5 vol. % of MoS$_2$exhibited best friction stability among others. In particular, the thickness of the friction film decreased as the amount of MoS$_2$increased and severe friction oscillation was observed when the friction material contained MoS$_2$only (21 vol. %). Microscopic observations and friction tests suggested that the coherent thick transfer film improved the friction stability.
A controller designed by CDM for a servo type system which is an augmented system constructed from a rotational inverted pendulum with an integrator added to its arm, is presented in this paper. In order to be able to apply the CDM concept, the augmented system must be linearized and converted into controllable canonical form. Then, the controller consisting of the state feedback gain matrix and an integral gain in the sense of CDM can be obtained. This shows that design procedure for the proposed controller is easy. The experimental results obtained from the rotational inverted pendulum controlled by the proposed controller show that the system response has no steady-state error, however, the oscillation amplitude of the arm angle is still significant. Therefore, in this paper, the friction compensation using Coulomb friction with stiction is also added to the controller. The oscillation amplitude of the arm angle that can be reduced remarkably is also shown in the experimental results.
Tribological properties of hybrid type friction materials were studied. Hybrid friction materials were produced by combining non-steel(NS) and low-steel(LS) type friction materials. The emphasis of the investigation was given to possible synergistic effects from the two different friction materials, in terms of friction stability at high temperatures and the amplitude of friction oscillation, also known as stick-slip at low sliding speeds. The high temperature friction test results showed that the friction effectiveness of the hybrid friction material was well sustained compared to LS and NS friction materials. Wear resistance of the hybrid type was similar to LS friction materials. Examination of the rubbing surfaces after tests revealed that the friction characteristics of the hybrid friction material were attributed to the wear debris produced from low-steel friction materials, which were migrated to the surface of the non-steel friction material, forming new contact plateaus. The stick-slip amplitude and its frequency were pronounced when non-steel friction material was tested, while hybrid and low-steel types showed relatively small stick-slip amplitudes. These results suggest possible improvement of tribological properties by designing a hybrid composite of low-steel and non-steel friction materials.
Tribological behavior of novolac resin-based friction materials with three different relative amounts of graphite and zirconium silicate was investigated by using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. The goal of this paper is to examine the effects of the relative amount of a lubricant and an abrasive in the automotive friction material on friction and wear characteristics at elevated temperature. Friction and wear of friction materials were affected by the existence of transfer film(3$\^$rd/ body layer) at friction interface and the composition of friction material, especially lubricant amount. The friction material with higher content of graphite indicated homogenized and durable transfer film, and resulted in stable friction coefficient regardless of the increase in friction heat. The experimental result also showed that the higher concentration of ZrSiO$_4$ in friction material aggravated friction stability and wear resistance due to the higher friction heat generated at fiction interface during high temperature friction test.
A resin bonded copper-graphite brush was investigated to evaluate the characteristics electrical signal transmission through a sliding contact as a function of the relative amount of graphite and copper in the brush. Particular attention was given to the correlation between electrical signal fluctuation and tribological properties in an electrical sliding contact system. A ring-on-block type tribotester was used for this experiment and the ring was made from pure copper. Results showed that a copper-graphite brush at a particular composition range exhibited the most stable frictional behavior with a minimum voltage drop. The amount of voltage drop at the friction interface was affected by the surface roughness, transfer film formation at the friction interface, and the real area of contact. Microscopic observations and the surface analysis showed a good agreement with the results from this experiment. The results also indicated that the electrical signal flunctuation was directly associated with the oscillation of the coefficient of friction during sliding by nanoscale variation of contacts at the friction interface.

Lip seals, important components in many hydraulic devices, dissipate energy through friction, resulting in power loss. This study contributes to an understanding of lip seal friction by further exploring the connections between friction behavior, viscoelastic properties of robber and viscous properties of the lubricant. Experiments haven been conducted for short stroke oscillations, where these connections are quite strong. Sliding friction experiments at a variety of pressures, temperatures and oscillation rates (for different seal materials, surface roughnesses and lubricant viscosities) are examined. Speculative explanations are suggested for conditions under which friction maxima and frictional vibrations occur.
