  • Turbulence in journal bearing operation is examined and the thermal variability is studied for isothermal, convective and adiabatic conditions on the walls under aligned and misaligned conditions. Also, the effects of a contraction ratio at the cavitation region and the mixing between re-circulating oil and inlet oil on the fluid field of oil film are included. An algorithm for the solution of the coupled turbulent Reynolds and energy equations is used to examine the effects of the various factors. Heat convection is found to play only a small role in determining friction and load under no mixing condition. However, under realistic mixing condition, the heat convection cannot be ignored. The wall temperature and heat transfer have been found to be of secondary important factors to the mixing effectiveness at the groove and the final mixture temperature.

  • The antiwear properties of amphiphilic monolayers and composite multilayer on silicon surface were investigated using microtribometer and Auger Electron Spectroscopy. LangmuirBlodgett (LB) monolayers from behenic acid, 2,4heneicosanedione(HD) and its lopper complex((HD)$_2$Cu) were fabricated on silicon surface and the composite multilayer of 5bilayer of (HD)$_2$Cu was fabricated on the surface of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) selfassembled monolayer (SAM). We observed that LB monolayers and the composite multilayer exhibited a steady and excellent friction response when compared with the OTS SAM. These LB mono and multilayer also showed much higher wearresistance than the OTS SAM.

  • The tribological behavior for MoS$_2$ bonded films is evaluated according to the international standard testing methods, such as ASTM D 2625(Falex tester) and ASTM D 2714(LFW-1 tester). It has been well known that the tribological behavior for MoS$_2$ bonded films is affected by several factors. However, in this work, the wear life for MoS$_2$ bonded films is mainly experimentally measured with different contact geometry, and evaluated in terms of the frictional heating according to the contact geometry of tribotester. The test results show that the wear life of MoS$_2$ bonded films is significantly affected not only by the frictional heating, but also by the contact pressure, test running-in conditions, and the contact conformity.

  • Conditioner wear, copper polish rates, pad temperature and coefficient of friction (COF) are measured for two novel Mitsubishi Materials Corporation designs during an extended wear and polishing test. Both designs are coated with a $Teflon^{TM}$ film to reduce substrate wear and chemical attack. Using optical interferometry, changes in the coating that result in gradual changes in diamond exposure are measured. Theories of the COF, conditioning, and polishing are applied to explain the observed performance differences between the designs.

  • In this paper, thermite and gas pressure weldings have been used to join rails in-track and analyzed as functions of hardness and wear characteristics. The wear rate of thermite welded rail is low compared with that of gas pressure welded rail, which is tested in a pin-on-disk wear tester. The hardness of thermite welded materials is relatively high and narrow distributed between three zones, welded part, thermally affected zone, and a base matrix. Wear of a welded rail may be a major factor in railroad maintenance costs and failures at the rail-rail butt joint.

  • Lubricational characteristics at the interface between the piston ring and the cylinder liner are considered in this paper. To verify that surface shape and operating conditions of the engine can affect the state of lubrication, the changes of the minimum film thickness and friction force are calculated with various conditions. Oil starvation and open-end boundary condition are used to determine computational boundaries as reported on previous paper for lubrication analysis for the piston ring. From this analysis, it can be found that lubricational characteristics are seriously affected by degree of oil starvation, surface shape and operating conditions.

  • In this paper, a theoretical method is presented to design a hydraulic control valve system that consist of an important component in the hydraulic snubber. The hydraulic snubber is used essentially to support the piping systems at power plants. To calculate the force due to pressure drop and flow rate in the valve orifice and by-pass hole, Bernoulli equation is used. The Reynolds equation are numerically analyzed in the clearance gap between the valve cone and valve seat to estimate the friction force and leakage flow rate. Based on the detailed theoretical data, we developed successfully the hydraulic snubber for power plants.

  • In order to identify the effect of lubricant films on abrasive abilities of diamond films, wear rates of Ruby balls slid over as grown diamond films and polytetrafluoroethylene films coated diamond films were compared by using pin-on-disk tribometer. Wear scars of Ruby balls were measured by SEM. Results showed that wear rates of Ruby balls slid over polytetrafluoroethylene coated diamond films were about 4 times lager than as grown diamond films. Coefficients of friction decreased with sliding distance at diamond disks but were almost unchanged at polytetrafluoroethylene coated ones. These results came from behaviors of wear debris, which adhered more strongly in the tracks of as grown diamond films than polytetrafluoroethylene coated ones.
