  • Friction and adhesion tests were conducted to investigate tribological characteristics of materials for MEMS/NEMS using atomic force microscope (AFM). AFM Si tips were chemically modified with a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) derived from trichlorosilane like octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) and (1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorooctyl) trichlorosilane (FOTS), and various materials, such as Si, Al, Au, Cu, Ti and PMMA films, were prepared for the tests. SAMs were coated on Si wafer by dipping method prior to AFM tip to determine a proper dipping time. The proper dipping time was determined from the measurements of contact angle, surface energy and thickness of the SAMs. AFM tips were then coated with SAMs by using the same coating condition. Friction and adhesion forces between the AFM Si tip modified with SAM and MEMS/NEMS materials were measured. These forces were compared to those when AFM tip was uncoated. According to the results, after coating OTS and FOTS, the friction and adhesion forces on all materials used in the tests decreased; however, the effect of SAM on the reduction of friction and adhesion forces could be changed according to counterpart materials. OTS was the most effective to reduce the friction and adhesion forces when counterpart material was Cu film. In case of FOTS, friction and adhesion forces decreased the most effectively on Au films.

  • Friction and wear properties of the Boron carbide ($B_{4}C$) coating 100 nm thickness were studied under various relative humidity (RH). The boron carbide film was deposited on silicon substrate by DC magnetron sputtering method using $B_{4}C$ target with a mixture of Ar and methane ($CH_4$) as precursor gas. Friction tests were performed using a reciprocation type friction tester at ambient environment. Steel balls of 3 mm in diameter were used as counter-specimen. The results indicated that relative humidity strongly affected the tribological properties of boron carbide coating. Friction coefficient decreased from 0.42 to 0.09 as the relative humidity increased from $5\%$ to $85\%$. Confocal microscopy was used to observe worn surfaces of the coating and wear scars on steel balls after the tests. It showed that both the coating surface and the ball were significantly worn-out even though boron carbide is much harder than the steel. Moreover, at low humidity ($5\%$) the boron carbide showed poor wear resistance which resulted in the complete removal of coating layer, whereas at the medium and high humidity conditions, it was not. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) analyses were performed to characterize the chemical composition of the worn surfaces. We suggest that tribochemical reactions occurred during sliding in moisture air to form boric acid on the worn surface of the coating. The boric acid and the tribochemcal layer that formed on steel ball resulted in low friction and wear of boron carbide coating.

  • A low temperature plasma carburizing process was performed on AISI 316L austenitic stainless steel to achieve an enhancement of the surface hardness without degradation of its corrosion resistance. Attempts were made to investigate the influence of the processing temperatures on the surface hardened layer during low temperature plasma carburizing in order to obtain the optimum processing conditions. The expanded austenite (${\gamma}_c$) phase, which contains a high saturation of carbon (S phase), was formed on all of the treated surfaces. Precipitates of chromium carbides were detected in the hardened layer (C-enriched layer) only for the specimen treated at $550^{\circ}C$. The hardened layer thickness of ${\gamma}_c$ increased up to about $65{\mu}m$ with increasing treatment temperature. The surface hardness reached about 900 $HK_{0.05}$, which is about 4 times higher than that of the untreated sample (250 $HK_{0.05}$). A minor loss in corrosion resistance was observed for the specimens treated at temperatures of $300^{\circ}C{\sim}450^{\circ}C$ compared with untreated austenitic stainless steel. In particular, the precipitation of chromium carbides at $550^{\circ}C$ led to a significant decrease in the corrosion resistance. A diamond-like carbon (DLC) film coating was applied to improve the wear and friction properties of the S phase layer. The DLC film showed a low and stable friction coefficient value of about 0.1 compared with that of the carburized surface (about 0.45). The hardness and corrosion resistance of the S phase layer were further improved by the application of such a DLC film.

  • Tribological behaviors of the hard film on soft substrate system were explored using the hard thin film of diamond-like carbon (DLC) coated the soft polymer of polydimethysiloxane (PDMS). A DLC film with the Young's modulus of 100 GPa was coated on PDMS substrate with Young's modulus of 10 MPa using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) technique. The deposition time was varied from 10 sec to 10 min, resulting in nanoscale roughness of wrinkle patterns with the thickness of 20 nm to 510 nm, respectively, at a bias voltage of $400\;V_b$, working pressure 10 mTorr. Nanoscale wrinkle patterns with 20-100 nm in width and 10-30 nm height were formed on DLC coating due to the residual stress in compression and difference in Young's modulus. Nanoscale roughness effect on tribological behaviors was observed by performing a tribo-experiment using the ball-on-disk type tribometer with a steel ball of 6 mm in diameter at the sliding speed of 220 rpm, normal load of 1N and 25% humidity at ambient temperature of $25^{\circ}C$. Friction force were measured with respect to thickness change of coated DLC thin film on PDMS. It was found that with increases the thickness of DLC coating on PDMS, the coefficient of friction decreased by comparison to that of the uncoated PDMS. The wear tracks before and after tribo-test were analyzed using SEM and AFM.

  • Measurement of average of heat transfer and friction coefficients were obtained with air flowing through electrically heated ducts having square, rectangular(aspect ration, 5), and triangular cross section for range of surface temperature from $540^{\circ}$to $1780^{\circ}$ R and Reynolds number from 1000 to 330,000. The results indicates that the effect of heat flux on correlations of the average heat transfer and friction coefficients is similar to that obtained for circular tubes in previous investigation and was nearly eliminated by evaluating the physical properties and density of the air a film temperature halfway between the average surface and fluid bulk temperatures, With the Nusselt and Reynolds numbers on the hydraulic diameter of the ducts, the data for the noncircular ducts could be represented by the same equations obtained in the previous investigation for circular tubes. Correlation of the average difference between the surface corner and midwall temperatures for the square duct was in agreement with predicted values from a previous analysis. However, for the rectangular and triangular ducts, the measured corner temperature was greater by approximately 20 and 35 percent, respectively, than the values predicted by analysis.

  • An understanding of tribological behavior in CMP(Chemical Mechanical Polishing) is one of the most important things to reveal the mechanism of material removal. In CMP, the contact type is thought to be semi-direct, elastohydrodynamic contact type from the Stribeck diagram, which is a combination of solid-solid direct contact and hydrodynamic lubrication with thin liquid film. This study is focused on the decay of friction force during CMP from two points of view, one of which is change of the real contact area and the other is the decrease of the elastic modulus of the pad caused by the increase of the temperature during CMP Experiments are implemented with elastic modulus measuring system and tool dynamometer. Results show that the decay of friction force during CMP results from the decrease of the real contact pressure working on an abrasive, which is induced by the decrease of elastic modulus of pad caused by the increase of temperature. And, the phenomenon is thought to be happen specially in the case that the weight concentration of abrasive in slurry is small enough.

  • To reduce the friction losses and the wear amounts in the piston assembly two methods were proposed. One is the modification of surface profile of the skirt part. The surface coating is another method to protect the sliding surfaces. To modify the profile of the skirt surfaces the surfaces were ground to have three different shapes of profiles. Also, several coatings, such as graphite, TiN, and $MoS_2$, and DLC, were used to protect the surfaces of the piston skirts. The specimens of the skirt and the cylinder bores were tested with the reciprocating wear tester. SAE 5W40 engine oil was used in boundary lubrication regime. Among several coatings the graphite and DLC coatings were very effective to reduce the friction forces. Especially, DLC film represented much better tribological performances than the others. The friction coefficient of the graphite coating was the lowest, but the graphite coating was not effective to protect the surfaces.

  • Ti-containing amorphous carbon (a-C:Ti) films shows attractive mechanical properties such as low friction coefficient, good adhesion to various substrate and high wear resistance. The incorporation of titanium in a-C films is able to improve the electrical conductivity, friction coefficient and adhesion to various substrates. In this study, a-C:Ti films were depositied on Si wafer by closed-field unbalanced magnetron (CFUBM) sputtering system composed two targets of carbon and titanium. The tribological properties of a-C:Ti films were investigated with the increase of DC bias voltage from 0 V to - 200 V. The hardness and elastic modulus of films increase with the increase of DC bias voltage and the maximum hardness shows 21 GPa. Also, the coefficient of friction exhibites as low as 0.07 in the ambient. In the result, the a-C:Ti film obtained by CFUBM sputtering method improved the tribological properties with the increase of DC bias volatage.
