  • Germplasms and breeding lines of malting barley at National Yeongnam Agricultural Experiment Station (NYAES) were evaluated for malting barley quality improvement. Among the numerous malting barley quality parameters, the mean of protein content was 12.3% between 10.7% to 14.0% and range of the $\beta$-glucan content was from 3.5% to 5.8%, the mean was 4.6 percent. The length of acrospire, non-germination rate, friability, the speed of filtration, extract yield, kolbach index, diastatic power were significantly different between the individual varieties, however the other traits were not significantly different. The results of correlation analysis among 15 quality parameters showed significant positive correlation between crude protein content and malt protein content. However, other quality parameters such as sugar content, fiablity, extract yield, and kolbach index had negative correlation with crude protein content. Therefore, crude protein content could be one of the major factors that deteriorate quality. The varieties of Viva, Nishino-chikara, Kinukei 9, Kinukei 12, Sacheon 6 and Jinyangbori that showed over the 80% in extract yield and the higher diastatic power, will be used by crossing parents for improve the quality of malting barley.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the differences in malt quality between high-protein Korean malting barley and low-protein Korean malting barley. The average protein content of each area in the 1996 crops was as follows; The protein content of Doosan-29 from Jeon-Nam was 14.1% (d.b), that of Sacheon-6 from kyung-Nam was 13.4% (d.b) and that of Doosan-8 from Je-Ju was 12.8% (d.b). In the micro malting trial for high and low protein malting barley, the original protein level of the malting barley was not changed and decreased during germination days. The malt friability of high-protein malting barley was very low, but that of low-protein malting barley was high. The malt friability of high-protein malting barley was 44.5% and that of low-protein malting barley was 84.2%. In proportion to an increase of +1% (d.b) in barley protein, the fine grind extract of malt was decreased -0.86% (d.b). Economically, it was the most negative factor for high-protein Korean malting barley. The ${\beta}-glucan$ content of high-protein malting barley was higher than that of low-protein malting barley. Wort viscosity and malt color were increased and Kolbach index was decreased in high-protein malting barley. Free amino nitrogen and diastatic power for high-protein malting barley were higher than those of low-protein malting barley. They were the most positive factors for high-protein Korean malting barley.

  • Systemic emboli occur in approximately one-third of patients with cardiac myxoma. Embolization is common because of the friability of the tumor and intracardiac location. Embolic episodes in young patients with normal sinus rhythm should arouse suspicions of cardiac myxoma in the absence of active endocarditis. We present one case of 17 years old girl having saddle embolism combined with left atrial myxoma. We planned staged operation. First, the emergency thromboembolectomy of aortic bifurcation was performed through bilateral transfemoral approach with use of Forgaty catheter. One week later, the extirpation of myxoma was successfully done with ECC.

  • The RMS statistical approach has demonstrated its potential in developing pharmaceutical dosage forms and in improving tabletting performance. Using an optimized formula, the tabletting performances of vitamin C-90 such as compressibility, disintegration time, lubrication and friability are significantly enhanced when compared with the performance of a traditional test formula. More important, this method also enables us to serve our customers better. Any customized modification of a suggested formula or any technical problem related performance etc. can be readily resolved by simple examination of the models.

  • Background/Aims: We aimed to evaluate the histologic features predictive of prognosis and correlate them with endoscopic findings in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) having complete or partial mucosal healing (MH). Methods: We prospectively collected and reviewed data from patients with UC who underwent colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy with biopsy. Complete and partial MH were defined as Mayo endoscopic subscores (MESs) of 0 and 1, respectively. Histologic variables, including the Nancy index (NI), predicting disease progression (defined as the need for medication upgrade or hospitalization/surgery), were evaluated and correlated with endoscopic findings. Results: Overall, 441 biopsy specimens were collected from 194 patients. The average follow-up duration was 14.7 ± 7.4 months. There were 49 (25.3%) and 68 (35.1%) patients with MESs of 0 and 1, respectively. Disease progression occurred only in patients with an MES of 1. NI ≥ 3 was significantly correlated with disease progression during follow-up. Mucosal friability on endoscopy was significantly correlated with NI ≥ 3 (61.1% in NI < 3 vs. 88.0% in NI ≥ 3; p = 0.013). Conclusions: Histological activity can help predict the prognosis of patients with UC with mild endoscopic activity. Mucosal friability observed on endoscopy may reflect a more severe histological status, which can be a risk factor for disease progression.

  • Recent work at USC has focused on strategies to enhance the toughness and overall mechanical performance of polymer foams for use in lightweight sandwich structures. Both mechanical and chemical approaches have been employed with reasonable success. Fiber reinforcement, though difficult from a processing perspective, can lead to substantial enhancements in toughness and strength, while reducing friability. Chemical modifications are also challenging from a processing perspective, but can produce similar enhancements in performance. Efforts to enhance performance of phenolic foam and PVC foam through fiber reinforcement and chemical modification are described, along with the resulting enhancements in performance.

  • In order to reduce gastric irritation in the stomach of iron preparations, ferroglycine fumarate (FGF) granules coated with hydroxyethylcellulose was made by matrix granulator, and the constrained optimization method, employing the Lagrange equation, was successfully applied to the manufacturing process design of controlled release tablets. The effects of stearic acid and dried corn starch on tablet hardness, friability, dissolution rate $t_{50%}$ and tablet volume were found to be very significant. In rabbit test, pharmacokinetic parameters $(K_a,\;C_{max}\;and\;AUC^{0-12})$ and urinary excretion rate $(K_e)$ of the controlled release FGF tablets were higher than those of controlled release ferroglycine sulfate tablets which were manufactured in the same optimal conditions. Controlled release FGF tablets were more stable than controlled release ferroglycine sulfate tablets in accelerated storage conditions.

  • Surgical correction of patent ductus arteriosus is,under most circumstances, highly successful and carries a low mortality. But infected PDA is yet potentially dangerous due to its frequent recurrence and resistant organisms to antibiotics. And,in surgical correction, surgeon may face the possibility of tearing of ductus arteriosus arterial end due to friability and adhesion of its surrounding tissue. This report demonstrats another problem in treatment of infected patent ductus arteriosus. This thirteen years old female patient received susceptible combined antibiotics intravenously from the day of admission and remitted from 4th.week of therapy. This remission state continued for 12days without relapse. But the pulmonary artery ruptured in this remission period. In autopsy, bacteria was not found in ductal vegetation. Also, there was no pulmonary artery aneurysm,Our experience show that in infected PDA,pulmonary artery can rupture spontaneously during remission period without aneurysmal formation.

  • Tablet product design problem was structured as constrained optimization problem and subsequently solved by multiple regression analysis and Lagrangian method of optimization. Aluminum flufenamate was the drug chosen and microcrystalline cellulose nad starch were the binder and disintegrant, respectivley. The effect of the binder and disintegrant concentration on tablet hardness, friability, volume, in vitro release rate, and urinary excretion rate of drug in human subjects was recorded. Since a reasonably rapid release rate of drug is generally an important objective in the design of solid dosage form, optimization of this parameter was employed in studying the applicability of constrained optimization to a pharmaceutical product design problem. In addition to finding optimal sitivity analysis studies to such problems was also illustratd. It would appear that prediction of the in vivo t$_{50%}$ response from a knowledge of the incitro t$_{50%}$ response can be made fairly accurately for the tablet system used in this study.

  • Extrusion-spheronization processing combination was used to produce spherical granules with experimental formulations which contain microcrystalline cellulose as a diluent. The produced granules were compared on the basis of the following physical properties ; (a) bulk density, (e) porosity, (f) friabillity and (g) dissolution rate. With the specific experimental formulations used in this study, the increased plate rotational speeds of Marumerizer (400-1200rpm) produced continually more spherical material and also the obtained data indicated that the particle size distribution and dissolution rate depend upon the amount of microcrystalline cellulose used. As a result, the spherical granule preparation with microcrystalline cellulose has good properties in flow rate, packing propertyu and friability and offers a suitable method of granule preparation in pharmaceutical industry.
