  • The adsorption charateristics of lead(II) ions on Aspergillus niger and Rhizopus arrhizus were investigated. Adsorption amount of A. niger and R. arrhizus was about 95 mg/g and 25 mg/g, respectively. These biomass was approached to adsorption equilibrium within reaction time of 1hr because of their high reactivity. The uptake of lead ion by A. niger was less sensitivity than it by R. arrhizus on the inhibition effect of alkali metals and the decreasing ratio of uptake of lead ion of A. niger and R. arrhizus by inhibition effect of alkali metals was 37% and 50%, respectively. In pre-treatment on these biomass, NaOH treatment was contributed high adsorption capacity to these biomass. Then, adsorption amount of A. niger and R. allhizus was increased about 25 mg/g and 10 mg/g, respectively. In isotherm for the adsorption of lead ion based on Freundlich equation, 1/n value of A. niger and R. ar고izus was calculated the range of 0.28-0.56 and 0.44-0.67, respectively.

  • Carbolic Acid which is called phenol is one of the important starting and/or intermediate materials in various industrial processes. However, its excessive release into environment poses a threat to living organisms, as it is a highly carcinogens and hazardous pollutant even at the very low concentration. Thus removal of phenol from polluted environments is very crucial for sustainable remediation process. We developed a low cost adsorption method for separating phenol from a model aqueous solution. The phenol adsorption was studied using two adsorbents i.e., Amber lite XAD-16 and Amber lite XAD-7 HP with a constant amount of resin 0.1 g at varying aqueous phenol concentrations ($50-200mgL^{-1}$) at room temperature. We compared the efficacy of two phenol adsorbents for removing higher phenol concentrations from the media. We investigated equilibrium and kinetics studies of phenol adsorption employing Freundlich, Temkin and Langmuir isotherms. Amberlite XAD-16 performed better than Amberlite XAD-7 HP in terms of phenol removal efficiency that amounted to 95.52%. Pseudo second order model was highly fitted for both of the adsorption systems. The coefficient of determination ($R^2$) with Langmuir isotherm was found to be 0.98 for Amberlite XAD-7 HP. However, Freundlich isotherm showed $R^2$ value of 0.95 for Amberlite XAD-16, indicating that both isotherms could be described for the isotherms on XAD-7 HP and Amberlite XAD-16, respectively.

  • Little research has been conducted to explore the heavy metal removal potential of biochar. The adsorption characteristics of heavy metals by sesame waste biochar (pyrolysis at $600^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour) as heavy metal absorbent were investigated. The sesame waste biochar was characterized by SEM-EDS and FT-IR, and heavy metal removal was studied using Freundlich and Langmuir equations. The removal rates of heavy metals were higher in the order of Pb>Cu>Cd>Zn, showing that the adsorption efficiency of Pb was higher than those of any other heavy metals. Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption isotherms were used to model the equilibrium adsorption data obtained for adsorption of heavy metals on biochar produced from sesame waste. Pb, Cu, Cd and Zn equilibrium adsorption data were fitted well to the two models, but Pb gave a better fit to Langmuir model. Heavy metals were observed on the biochar surface after adsorption by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Main functional groups were aromatic C=O ring (at $1160cm^{-1}$, $1384cm^{-1}$ and $1621cm^{-1}$) by FT-IR analysis. Thus, biochar produced from sesame waste could be useful adsorbent for treating heavy metal wastewaters.

  • The adsorption of phenolic compound resorcinol on activated carbons prepared from Moringa oleifera (Drumstick bark) has been investigated. Activated carbon was prepared by impregnating Moringa oleifera with 50% phosphoric acid in the ratio of 1:1 and 1:2(w/w), designated as MOAC1 and MOAC2. Equilibrium and isotherm studies were carried out. The influences of variables such as contact time, initial concentration of resorcinol, carbon dosage in the solution on percentage adsorption and adsorption capacity of the bark have been analysed. The equilibration time was found to be 4 h. Kinetics of resorcinol onto activated carbons was checked for pseudo first order and pseudo second order model. It was found that the adsorption of resorcinol follows pseudo second order kinetics for both MOAC1 and MOAC2. The isotherm data were correlated with isotherm models, namely Langmuir and Freundlich. Adsorption isotherms were satisfactorily fitted by both the Langmuir and Freundlich model for MOAC1 and MOAC2.

  • This study was conducted for the efficient utilization of biomaterials such as starch residue, tangerine skin, and green tea residue, which are agricultral by-products discarded in Cheju Province annually, as adsorbents and biomaterials were examined for their removal ability of heavy metal ions in waste water by batch adsorption experiments. The removal efficiency of biomaterials for heavy metal ions was above 80-90% and almost similar to activated carbon and the adsorption ability of those treated with 포르말린 was improved in the green tea residue only for $Pb^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, and $Zn^{2+}$. In the conditions of pH, the removal efficiency of heavy metal ions was high in the range of 5-7. In the solutions which heavy metal ions were mixed, the removal efficiency was similar at $Ag^+$, $Pb^{+2}$ and reduced to about 10% at the other ions, as compared with the solutions they were not mixed. Adsorption isotherm of biomaterials was generally obeyed to Freundlich formular than Langmuir formular and Freundlich constant, 1/n were obtained in the range of 0.1-0.5.

  • The biosorption of dye, Rhodamine B(Rh-B), onto waste activated sludge was investigated. The biosorption capacity and contact time were shown as a simulation of dye adsorption equilibrium and kinetics models. We observed that biosorption of Rh-B occurred rapidly less than 4 hr. These experimental data could be better fitted by a pseudo-second-order rate equation than a pseudo-first-order rate equation. The equilibrium dependence between biosorption capacity and initial concentration of Rh-B was estimated and it was found that the equilibrium data of biosorption were fitted by four kinds of model such as Langmuir, Freundlich, Redlich-Peterson, and Koble-Corrigan model. The average percentage errors, $\varepsilon(\%)$, observed between experimental and predicted values by above each model were $21.19\%,\;9.97\%,\;10.10\%\;and\;11.76\%$, respectively, indicating that Freundlich and Redlich-Peterson model could be fitted more accrately than other models.

  • The purpose of this research is evaluation of adsorption capacity of the cast for TCE comparing with the yellow clay. Furthermore, the experimental data was fitted with the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm and was found to be apllicable to the adsorption isotherm equation. The soil bed reactor used in this study was made of glass(10 cm in diameter, 100 cm in depth). The cast and yellow clay used as adsorbents were screened with 8-20 mesh mecanically. Results from Equilibrium test with adsorbents showed that the equibrium time of the cast and yellow clay was 9min independent of the amount of the adsorbents. The adsorption efficiencys of the cast and yellow clay for TCE was 66.3% and 56.2%, respectively. In the application of Freundlich isotherm, 1/n of the cast and yellow clay were 0.786 and 0.704, respectively. These results showed that the cast was more available than the yellow clay as TCE adsorbent. The best adsorption capacity was showed at 0% moisture content, 70 ppm inlet concentration and 25$^{\circ}$C temperature.

  • Batch experiments were conducted to investigate the sorption and desorption behaviors of PAHs (naphthalene, phenanthrene and pyrene) in soils. Three different soils montmorillonite KSF (foc =0.14%), masato (foc =0.08%), and diatomite (foc =0.007%) were investigated. The results of sorption-desorption experiment indicate that the sorption affinity of PAHs was in the order of montmorillonite > masato > diatomite. The Freundlich model was well fitted to the sorption and desorption data. Sorption affinity increased as loc increased. Desorption of PAHs from soils was biphasic composed of reversible and irreversible compartments. Desorption-resistance of phenanthrene in soils was also determined. The biphasic desorption model was used to explain desorption-resistance of phenanthrene in soils. The linear term represents reversible sorption fraction and Langmuinian-type term represents desorption-resistant fraction.

  • A mixed adsorbent prepared by pyrolysing a mixture of carbon and flyash in 1:1 ratio was tested for its deceleration ability for three different classes of dyes, namely Astrazone Blue FRR(C.I. Basic Blue 69), Teflon Blue ANL(C.I. Acid Slue 125) and Verofix Red(Reactive Red 3GL). Equilibrium investigations were carried out at the optimum conditions obtained in the previous studies. The equilibrium data fitted reasonably well to both the Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption models. However the Langmuir model was more appropriate to describe the adsorption behavior of the dyes to the hybrid absorbent system compared with the Freundlich model. The mixed adsorbent cm be an low-cost alternative to activated carbons.
