  • The primary purpose of this study was to develop a college adjustment program for freshmen through admission officer system that relies less on test scores and on the various talents evaluated by admissions officers. To help these talented students adjust the new life of the university and enhance their gifts, a college adjustment program was developed with their special needs and characteristics. For that, the survey with 57 students and in-depth interviews with 12 students were conducted. The results revealed that the students wanted to learn study skills, self-management, global mind setting, and life vision and goals setting. Most of the students were worried about their grades because they entered the school with their talents and experience in diverse activities not SAT scores. To promote their academic performance, this program consisted of an academic readiness program which complements students' abilities in primary subjects like math, English, and science, and a potential progress program which is peer-group learning communities based on their own interests like global learning communities, creative learning communities, and service-learning communities. This program was suggested in the context of Comprehensive Development Model. To carry out the program systematically, related organizations and colleges should collaborate with each other.

  • The purpose of this study was in a pandemic situation caused by COVID-19 to explore the online distance experiments and interaction of engineering freshmen, and to identify practical difficulties, resulting in to derive implications. Seven freshmen from engineering college participated in the interview, of which data were analyzed based on phenomenological analysis methods. The types of non-face-to-face experiments experienced by students were complete non-face-to-face experiment, mixed face-to-face experiment, and fusion face-to-face experiment. Students were completely isolated in time and space in complete non-face-to-face experiment. In biweekly mixed face-to-face experiment, isolation was halved. In fusion face-to-face experiment, isolation was removed. Non-face-to-face interactions can be characterized by restrictions on simultaneous activities, on rapport formation, and on observation opportunities. Based on these results, three implications were derived: First, it is necessary to allow students to manage time and space constraints on their own in non-face-to-face experiments. Second, support is needed to solve the difficulty of forming rapport, which is a characteristic of non-face-to-face interaction. Third, an opportunity to observe the interaction between other students and professors should be provided.

  • This study aims to investigate effects of scaffolding on writing apprehension and media literacy in engineering freshmen's synchronous online writing course, and the relationships between the two variables. 'Scaffolding' is in-time support provided by a teacher/tutor or competent peer that enables students to meaningfully gain skills at problem solving process. Also, it is one of the most frequently mentioned concepts in education as well as one of the more necessary teaching strategies in an online writing course. In this study, provided treatments for the experiment were supportive scaffolding for domain-specific knowledge and reflective scaffolding for meta-cognitive knowledge. Participants were 102 engineering undergraduate students, who were assigned to two experimental groups by scaffolding types. A process-based writing course in online learning environment was conducted for 8 weeks. The writing tasks were given according to writing process. The findings were that, firstly, there were statistically significant writing apprehension's reduction and self-expression's improvement through the scaffolding provided in writing class. Secondly, writing apprehension's reduction and self-expression's improvement were significant in supportive scaffolding group. Thirdly, media literacy predicted writing apprehension. The practical implications of these findings are discussed herein, with particular attention on ways for writing apprehension's reduction as well as media literacy's enhancement.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine how much knowledge dental-hygiene students had about AIDS and how they looked at that. The subjects in this study were 370 freshmen, sophomores and juniors who were majoring in dental hygiene. The findings of this study were as follows : The rate of the students who were accurately aware of AIDS dissemination ranged from 59 to 92 percent. Those who knew that the disease didn't spread through routine daily contacts stood at 63 to 91 percent, and the students who were correctly cognizant of the cause of AIDS numbered 41 to 77 percent. Those who grasped the seriousness of that disease stood at 45 to 83 percent. The students weren't properly aware of how to prevent AIDS, as just 33 to 68 percent knew about that. Concerning connections between school year and AIDS knowledge, the sophomores had a better knowledge on its dissemination, cause and AIDS itself than the freshmen and juniors. As for attitude toward AIDS, 72.4 percent considered themselves not to be susceptible to that disease, but 361 percent felt that they were likely to develop it. 44.6 percent weren't afraid of being attacked by that disease, but more students feared about that possibility. Most of the students, who ranged from 77 to 88 percent, hoped to continue to be educated about that, and as many as 92 percent believed that AIDS patients should separatedly be treated. A lot of the students, which accounted for 90 percent, felt fear in the course of treatment, but 44 percent believed that AIDS patients should equally be treated, which indicated that they had a sense of responsibility. As to the relationship of school year to altitude toward AIDS, when their ideas about the danger of AIDS were asked, the freshmen and juniors considered themselves not to be susceptible to that disease more than the sophomores did, and the former group felt, more than the latter, that AIDS infection should be more thoroughly prevented than hepatitis in dental clinic. The juniors had a stronger tendency to find themselves to be exposed to AIDS as equally as most other people, compared to the freshmen and sophomores. The sophomores felt higher need for AIDS - related education, and had a stronger sense of duty about treating AIDS patients, and were more apprehensive of the disease in the course of treatment than the freshmen and juniors did. The above-mentioned findings suggested thai every individual should be cautious not to develop AIDS, as there is still no workable vaccine. Since the nation is not free from the horrible disease, the government should put more efforts into researching and preventing it. But what's most important is that dental-hygiene students, who will be committed to dental treatment in the future, should precisely be cognizant of the seriousness of that disease, and try to stay away from it by using protective devices and handling dental supplies properly. And the type of treatment system thai could prevent AIDS infection should be established.
