  • Purpose: Mood disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder are a major mental health problem in college students. We investigate the prevalence of depression and bipolar disorder and the relevance of risk factors for these mood disorders among one college freshmen. Methods: The subjects were 2,865 college students who entered one university located in Seoul and Ansung in 2009. We used BDI (Beck Depression Inventory) for depression assessment and K-MDQ (Mood Disorder Questionnaire) for bipolar disorder assessment. Demographic and socioeconomic factors were measured by questionnaire. Height, weight, blood pressure, total cholesterol, complete blood cell count, and liver function test data were obtained by physical examination for freshmen. Chi-square test and multiple logistic regression were performed to analyze the possible risk factors for depression and bipolar disorder. Results: With different BDI cutoff value, 16 and 21, the prevalence of depression was 8.7% (male: 7.6%, female: 10.1%) and 2.4% (male: 2.5%, female: 2.3%), separately. 'Low economic status', 'urban birth place', and 'low grade at entrance' were significantly associated with depression. Using the original cutoff criterion, defined as clustering of 7 or more symptoms that caused moderate or severe problems, the prevalence of bipolar disorder was 1.3% (male: 1.4%, female: 1.1%). The risk factor of bipolar disorder was academic fields (art fields). Conclusion: Depression and bipolar disorder are common disease in college freshmen. Therefore, Campus-based mental health service program is needed to help with prevention of and early intervention of these mood disorders.

For the subjects of this study, 666 students of health-related departments and other departments of universities in Daegu City, Gyeongbuk Province were arbitrarily chosen and given a questionnaire. Then the questionnaires collected between October 1st and 31st, 2007 were analyzed. Major findings from this study are summarized below. 1. Regarding general characteristics of the subjects, 311 were students of health-related departments and 355 were students of other departments. 55.9% of the health-related department students and 49.0% of the other department students received immunization against hepatitis. 36.0% of the health-related department students and 31.6% of the other department students had antibodies. 2. Regarding the recognition of the infection routes of HBV, the right answer "Infected through placenta" was chosen by more juniors(94.4%), sophomores(93.8%) and freshmen(74.1%) of health-related departments than other students in this order (P<0.05). The answer "Infected through sexual intercourse" was chosen by the highest percentage(75.0%) of juniors followed by freshmen(69.2%) and sophomores(31.9%) (P<0.05). 3. The percentages of health-related department students who knew that "HBV can develop into hepatic cirrhosis or liver cirrhosis were the highest among juniors(88.9%), freshmen(87.7%) and sophomores(68.8%) in this order(P<0.05). Among the other department students, the percentages of right answers to the question "Acute HBV infection shows jaundice" were the highest among juniors(75.0%), sophomores(74.8%) and freshmen(58.7%)(P<0.05).

  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to examine the reason of choosing acupuncture and moxibustion at first and the change of preference along with the improvement of the causes of avoiding acupuncture and moxibustion. Methods : As for the methodology of the research, we had a questionnaire survey of the freshmen at Dongguk University in 2000. Out of 3095 freshmen, 2158 students (1170 males and 988 females) replied to the questionnaire and statistical analysis was carried out mainly on the items answered by the respondents. Comparison between groups concerning acupuncture and moxibustion treatment utilized x 2 test. Results : The results of the research are as follows: 1. The most frequent reason of choosing acupuncture and moxibustion initially was that it seemed to be effective, and the second reason was that they were encouraged by acquaintances. 2. The most frequent reason of revisiting acupuncture and moxibustion was that it was proved effective, and the second reason was that it did not induce pains. 3. The most frequent reason of not revisiting acupuncture and moxibustion was it was proved ineffective, and the second reason was that it induced pains. A large part of the respondents who did not revisit said they would do if the reasons of not revisiting were improved. Conclusion : The reasons of choosing acupuncture and moxibustion initially and revisiting appear to be closely related to the efficacy of acupuncture. It was shown that whether it was painful was also a crucial factor in the decisions. Based on the results, we consider that it is required to develop acupuncture manipulations that enhance the efficacy and reduce pains, as well as to invent various innovative acupuncture and moxibustion techniques and instruments.

The data was analyzed by using QUNAL program. Result: The result of the study showed 4 types. Four factors provided an explanation for 71.6% of total variances, and these four factors were analyzed and categorized as four types. We named type 1 as [positive pressure], type 2 as [relational friendly], type 3 as [creative benefit], type 4 as [paticipatory development]. Conclusion: In this study, PBL was valuable experience and recognized as a variety of perspectives for freshmen in nursing students. These findings indicate we suggest that planning of strategy for efficient operation on PBL was reflected above results.

  • This study aims to understand some related types (to DiSC behavioral ones) through an analysis about DiSC behavioral types of freshmen at the clinical pathology department in the University. In order to do that, a total of 34 male and female students were surveyed. General characteristics and DiSC behavioral types for the targeted students were analyzed for frequency and percentage. For the frequency, the Chi-square test was performed and the level of significance was set to p<0.05. For the elements to select the university at general characteristics from the result of this study, 21 students were found to have selected the university voluntarily (61.8%). For the information about the clinical pathology department, 14 students were found to be informed through media (41.2%) and 7 students were informed through their parents (20.6%). For the DiSC behavioral types of the students majoring in clinical pathology, 18 students were found to be I type (53.0%), 8 students were C type (23.5%), 5 students were S type (14.7%) and 3 students were D type (8.8%). The relevance between general characteristics and DiSC behavioral type were found to be insignificant. As this study is aimed, there is no significant relevance between general characteristics and DiSC behavioral types, but through an understanding of characteristics of the students majoring in the clinical pathology, helping freshmen who are taking their first steps to adapt themselves to a new environment by diagnosing and understanding their behavioral types, understanding behavioral styles of those four types and guiding them in a positive direction, the method should be considered to raise their satisfaction about the major.

  • The purpose of this descriptive research is to get basic data for educational program after investigating convergent effect of psychological capital on learning satisfaction of nursing freshmen. Using SPSS 21, T-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient and hierarchical multiple regression of the 164 collected data were carried out. The mean scores of psychological capital and learning satisfaction were above the middle, and the 'hope' was the highest among subdomains of psychological capital. There was a positive correlation between psychological capital and learning satisfaction(r=.665, p<.001). School performance(${\beta}=.311$), school life satisfaction(${\beta}=.191$) and psychological capital(${\beta}=.522$) were the significant factors of learning satisfaction in hierarchical multiple regression(F=37.651, p=.004). The explanatory rate of variables on learning satisfaction was 57.4%. It is needed applying these results in developing learning satisfaction programs, but it isn't appropriate to generalize these results conducted on nursing freshmen in one university.
