  • In this paper, the cavitating flows around a hydrofoil have been numerically investigated by using a 2-d multi-phase RANS flow solver based on pseudo-compressibility and a homogeneous mixture model on unstructured meshes. For this purpose, a vertex-centered finite-volume method was utilized in conjunction with 2nd-order Roe's FDS to discretize the inviscid fluxes. The viscous fluxes were computed based on central differencing. The Spalart-Allmaras one equation model was employed for the closure of turbulence. A dual-time stepping method and the Gauss-Seidel iteration were used for unsteady time integration. The phase change rate between the liquid and vapor phases was determined by Merkle's cavitation model based on the difference between local and vapor pressure. Steady state calculations were made for the modified NACA66 hydrofoil at several flow conditions. Good agreements were obtained between the present results and the experiment for the pressure coefficient on a hydrofoil surface. Additional calculation was made for cloud cavitation around the hydrofoil. The observation of the vapor structure, such as cavity size and shape, was made, and the flow characteristics around the cavity were analyzed. Good agreements were obtained between the present results and the experiment for the frequency and the Strouhal number of cavity oscillation.

  • Recent studies on ankle-foot prostheses used for transtibial amputees have focused on the adaptation of the ankle angle of the prosthesis according to ground conditions. For adaptation to various ground conditions (e.g., incline, decline, and step conditions), ankle-foot prostheses should first recognize the ground conditions as well as the current human motion pattern. For this purpose, the ground reaction forces and orientation angle of the tibia provide fundamental information. The measurement of the orientation angle, however, creates a challenge in practice. Although various sensors, such as accelerometers and gyroscopes, can be utilized to measure the orientation angles of the prosthesis, none of these sensors can be solely used due to their intrinsic drawbacks. In this paper, a time-varying complementary filtering (TVCF) method is proposed to incorporate the measurements from an accelerometer and a gyroscope to obtain a precise orientation angle. The cut-off frequency of TVCF is adaptively determined according to the human gait phase detected by a fuzzy logic algorithm. The performance of the proposed method is verified through experiments.

  • We study the focusing properties of a two-dimensional square-lattice photonic crystal (PC) comprising silica and germanium partitioned cylinders in air background. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) method with periodic boundary condition is utilized to calculate the dispersion band diagram and the FDTD method incorporating the perfectly matched layer boundary condition is employed to simulate the image formation. In contrast to the common square PCs in which the negative refraction effect occurs in the first photonic band without negative phase propagation, in our suggested model system, the frequency with negative refraction exists in the second band and in near-infrared region. In this case, the wave propagates with a negative phase velocity and the evanescent waves can be supported. We also discuss the dependency of the image resolution and its location on surface termination, source location, and slab thickness. According to the simulation results, spatial resolution of the proposed PC lens is below the radiation wavelength.

  • The demand of a three phase PWM inverter for the purpose of power control or grid-connecting is increasing. This inverter is connected to a grid through an L-filter or LCL-filter to reduce the harmonics caused by switching. An LCL-filter can reduce the harmonic of a low switching frequency and generate a satisfactory level of grid side current with a relatively low-inductance than an L-filter. But the additional poles caused by the LC part affects a stability problem due to induced resonance of the system. This paper presents a compensation method using a power theory to improve performance, the designed LCL-filter system and to reduce the stability problems caused by resonance. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified by simulations.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop precise point positioning (PPP) algorithms based on GLONASS code-pseudorange, verify their performance and present their utility. As the basic correction models of PPP, we applied Inter Frequency Bias (IFB), relativistic effect, satellite antenna phase center offset, and satellite orbit and satellite clock errors, ionospheric errors, and tropospheric errors that must be provided on a real-time basis. The satellite orbit and satellite clock errors provided by Information-Analytical Centre (IAC) are interpolated at each observation epoch by applying the Lagrange polynomial method and linear interpolation method. We applied Global Ionosphere Maps (GIM) provided by International GNSS Service (IGS) for ionospheric errors, and increased the positioning accuracy by applying the true value calculated with GIPSY for tropospheric errors. As a result of testing the developed GLONASS PPP algorithms for four days, the horizontal error was approximately 1.4 ~ 1.5 m and the vertical error was approximately 2.5 ~ 2.8 m, showing that the accuracy is similar to that of GPS PPP.

  • In this paper, a filter is proposed to compensate droop of the CIC filter for SDR. The proposed compensation filter has almost linear-phase characteristic, requires low operational complexity, and is cost-effective due to its second-order characteristic and lowest operational rate in the baseband.. Especially, it compensates droop in the passband with little performance degradation in the stopband. It is shown, by a design example and its performance analysis, that the proposed compensation method gives performance enhancement in communication systems. It is also shown that the proposed method is superior to conventional ones in view of memory usage and computational load.

  • This paper describes a new approach to the algorithm and fundamental characteristics of the device for monitoring the leakage currents flowing through zinc oxide (ZnO) surge arresters. In order to obtain a technique for a new on-line monitoring device that can be used in the deterioration diagnosis of ZnO surge arresters, the new algorithm and on-line leakage current detection device for extracting the resistive and capacitive currents using the phase shift addition method were proposed. The computer-based on-line monitoring device can sense accurately the power frequency leakage currents flowing through ZnO surge arresters. The on-line leakage current monitoring device of ZnO surge arresters proposed in this work has the high sensitivity compared to the third harmonic leakage current detection devices. As a consequence, it was found that the proposed leakage current monitoring device would be useful for forecasting the defects and degradation of ZnO surge arresters.

  • The proposed optical transmitter is composed of FF(flip flop) , PLL (phase locked loop), reference clock generator, serializer and LD driver 10x250 Mb/s data arrays are translated to the 2.5 Gb/s data signal by serializer. In this case, 1 data bus is allocated usually as a reference clock for synchronization. In this proposed optical transmitter, 125 MHz reference clock is generated from 10x250 Mb/s data arrays by reference clock generator. From this method. absent of reference clock bus is available and more data transmission become possible. To achieve high speed operation, the serializer circuit is designed as two stacks. For 10:1 serialization, 10 clocks that have 1/10 lambda differences is essential, so the VCO (voltage controlled oscillator) composed of 10 delay buffers is designed. PLL is for runing at 250 MHz, and dual PFD(phase frequency detector) is adopted for fast locking time. The optical transmitter is designed by using 0.35 um CMOS technology.

  • An electro-hydraulic actuator (EHA) is widely used in industrial motion systems and the increasing bandwidth of EHA position control is important issue. The model-inverse feedforward controller is known to extend the bandwidth of system. When the system has non-minimum phase (NMP) zeros, direct model inversion makes system unstable. To overcome this problem, an approximate model-inverse method is used. A representative approximate model inversion method is zero phase error tracking control (ZPETC). However, if zeros locate right half plane of z-plane, the approximate inverse model amplifies the high-frequency response. In this paper, to solve the problem of ZPETC, an adaptive model-inverse control is proposed. The adaptive algorithm updates feedforward term in real-time. The effectiveness of the proposed adaptive model-inverse position control strategy is verified by comparison with typical proportional-integral (PI) control and feedforward control by experiments. As a result, the proposed adaptive controller extends the bandwidth of EHA position control.
