  • Unsteady aerodynamic analysis of an aircraft is done using a frequency domian 3-D panel method. The method is based on an unsteady linear compressible lifting surface theory. The lifting surface is placed in a flight patch, and angle of attack and camber effects are implemented in upwash. Fuselage effects are not considered. The unsteady solutions of the code are validated by comparing with the solutions of a hybrid doublet lattice-doublet point method and a doublet point method for various wing configurations at subsonic and supersonic flow conditions. The calculated results of dynamic stability derivatives for aircraft are shown without comparision due to lack of available measured data or calculated results.

  • In this study, a controller for a nuclear reactor power is designed. The reactor is modeled using the three dimensional reactor design code MASTER. From the relationship of the input and output of the reactor code, a reactor dynamic model is derived by the system identification method. This model is more realistic than the one based on mathematical theories. With this model, a robust controller is designed by the extended frequency response method. As this method has the same theoretical background as the classical method, all of the existing design techniques of the classical method can be used directly. Furthermore, by introducing the real part of a Laplacian operator into the frequency response, the control design specification can be considered at the initial stage of design. The designed controller is simple, and gives a sufficient robustness with good performance.

  • Thickness of damping layer in sandwich plate needs to be optimized in order to make modal loss factor of the sandwich plate maximum. Since previous studies were interested in noise reductions over high frequency range, the modal properties were derived based on simply supported boundaries. This conventional formula is approximately applicable to other boundary conditions over high frequency range only. The purpose of this study is to propose a method to determine optimum damping layer thickness of sandwich plate for maximum modal damping in low frequency range when the boundary condition is not a simple support. The conventional RKU equation based on simply supported boundary is modified to reflect other boundary conditions and the modified RKU equation is subsequently applied to determine the optimum damping layer thickness for arbitrary conditions. In order to reflect frequency-dependent characteristics of elastic modulus of the damping layer, an iteration method is proposed in determining the modal properties. Test results on sandwich plates for optimum damping layer thickness are compared with predictions by the proposed method and conventional method.

  • In this paper, we present and analyze a robust frequency offset estimation scheme for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems over radio communication channels. When there exists frequency offset, the loss of orthogonality occurs and the interference problem among several subcarriers in OFDM signals is introduced. The guard interval of OFDM signals is employed for estimating the frequency offset. Furthermore, in order to enhance the frequency offset estimation performance, a ternary sequence is utilized. A frequency offset is estimated based on the synchronized correlator output. The proposed frequency offset estimation scheme can be applied to track the carrier frequency offset of OFDM systems.

  • In this paper, a simplified ultrasonic CT system, which uses the information in three directions, that is, 90°, +45° and -45°about the inspection plane, is applied to the high strength steel, and the frequency analysis method for enhancing the C scan or CT image is developed. This frequency analysis method is based on the frequency response property of the material. By comparing the magnitudes in the frequency domain, the special frequency which shows a significant difference between the welded joint and base material was found and used to obtain a C scan or CT image. Experimental results for several kinds of specimens, having a welded joint by electron beam welding, a weld joint by arc welding, on a fatigue crack, showed that the obtained C scan or CT image has better resolution than the results of previous experiments using the maximum value of the received waveform.

  • In this study, the pressure vessel piping with corrosion used during long term were investigated from the time-frequency analysis method. The damage of piping could be evaluated the attenuation factor by ultrasonic parameters such as center frequency and echo waveform. Based on NDE analysis by time-frequency analysis method, it should also be possible to evaluate from various damages and defects in piping members.

  • For cylindrical shells, the closed-form solutions are confined to the specific boundary and/or loading conditions. Though the finite element method is certainly a powerful solution approach for the structural dynamics problems, it has been well known to provide the solution reliable only in the low frequency region due to the inherent high sensitivities of structual and numerical modeling errors. Instead, the spectral element method has been proved to provide accurate dynamic characteristics of a structure even at the ultrasonic frequency region. Since the wave characteristic of a cylindrical shell becomes identical to that fo a flat plate as the frequency increases, an equivalent plate model (EPM) representing the high-frequency dynamic characteristics of the cylindrical shell is introduced herein. The EPM-based spectral element analysis solutions are compared with the known analytical solutions for the cylindrical shells to confirm the validity of the present modeling approach.

  • In this paper, two frequency domain signal processing techniques for pulse shape modulation(PSM) ultra wideband(UWB) systems are presented. Firstly, orthogonal detection of UWB PSM Hermite pulses in frequency domain is addressed. It is important because time domain detection by correlation-based receivers is severely degraded by many sources of distortion. Pulse-shape, the information conveying signal characteristic, is deformed by AWGN and shape-destructive addition of multiple paths from the propagation channel. Additionally, because of the short nature of UWB pulses, timing mismatches and synchronism degrade the performance of PSM UWB communication systems. In this paper, frequency domain orthogonality of the Hermite pulses is exploited to propose an alternative detection method, which makes possible efficient detection of PSM in dense multipath channel environments. Secondly, a ranging method employing the Cepstrum algorithm is proposed. This method is partly processed in the frequency domain and can be implemented without additional hardware complexity in the terminal.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to help select an appropriate word embedding method when analyzing East Asian traditional medicine texts as data. Methods : Based on prescription data that imply traditional methods in traditional East Asian medicine, we have examined 4 count-based word embedding and 2 prediction-based word embedding methods. In order to intuitively compare these word embedding methods, we proposed a "prescription generating game" and compared its results with those from the application of the 6 methods. Results : When the adjacent vectors are extracted, the count-based word embedding method derives the main herbs that are frequently used in conjunction with each other. On the other hand, in the prediction-based word embedding method, the synonyms of the herbs were derived. Conclusions : Counting based word embedding methods seems to be more effective than prediction-based word embedding methods in analyzing the use of domesticated herbs. Among count-based word embedding methods, the TF-vector method tends to exaggerate the frequency effect, and hence the TF-IDF vector or co-word vector may be a more reasonable choice. Also, the t-score vector may be recommended in search for unusual information that could not be found in frequency. On the other hand, prediction-based embedding seems to be effective when deriving the bases of similar meanings in context.
