A new ALE formulation for sloshing analysis

  • Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian finite element methods gain interest for the capability to control mesh geometry independently from material geometry, the ALE methods are used to create a new undistorted mesh for the fluid domain. In this paper we use the ALE technique to solve fuel slosh problem. Fuel slosh is an important design consideration not only for the fuel tank, but also for the structure supporting the fuel tank. "Fuel slosh" can be generated by many ways: abrupt changes in acceleration (braking), as well as abrupt changes in direction (highway exit-ramp). Repetitive motion can also be involved if a "sloshing resonance" is generated. These sloshing events can in turn affect the overall performance of the parent structure. A finite element analysis method has been developed to analyze this complex event. A new ALE formulation for the fluid mesh has been developed to keep the fluid mesh integrity during the motion of the tank. This paper explains the analysis capabilities on a technical level. Following the explanation, the analysis capabilities are validated against theoretical using potential flow for calculating fuel slosh frequency.

Buckling and vibration analysis of stiffened plate subjected to in-plane concentrated load

  • The buckling and vibration characteristics of stiffened plates subjected to in-plane concentrated edge loading are studied using finite element method. The problem involves the effects of non-uniform stress distribution over the plate. Buckling loads and vibration frequencies are determined for different plate aspect ratios, boundary edge conditions and load positions. The non-uniform stresses may also be caused due to the supports on the edges. The analysis presented determines the initial stresses all over the region considering the pre-buckling stress state for different kinds of loading and edge conditions. In the structural modeling, the plate and the stiffeners are treated as separate elements where the compatibility between these two types of elements is maintained. The vibration characteristics are discussed and the results are compared with those available in the literature and some interesting new results are obtained.

Frequency analysis of eccentric hemispherical shells with variable thickness

  • A three-dimensional (3-D) method of analysis is presented for determining the free vibration frequencies of eccentric hemi-spherical shells of revolution with variable thickness. Unlike conventional shell theories, which are mathematically two-dimensional (2-D), the present method is based upon the 3-D dynamic equations of elasticity. Displacement components $u_r$, $u_{\Theta}$, and $u_z$ in the radial, circumferential, and axial directions, respectively, are taken to be periodic in ${\theta}$ and in time, and algebraic polynomials in the r and z directions. Potential and kinetic energies of eccentric hemi-spherical shells with variable thickness are formulated, and the Ritz method is used to solve the eigenvalue problem, thus yielding upper bound values of the frequencies by minimizing the frequencies. As the degree of the polynomials is increased, frequencies converge to the exact values. Convergence to three or four-digit exactitude is demonstrated for the first five frequencies of the shells. Numerical results are presented for a variety of eccentric hemi-spherical shells with variable thickness.

Wave propagation of a functionally graded beam in thermal environments

  • In this paper, the effect of material-temperature dependent on the wave propagation of a cantilever beam composed of functionally graded material (FGM) under the effect of an impact force is investigated. The beam is excited by a transverse triangular force impulse modulated by a harmonic motion. Material properties of the beam are temperature-dependent and change in the thickness direction. The Kelvin-Voigt model for the material of the beam is used. The considered problem is investigated within the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory by using energy based finite element method. The system of equations of motion is derived by using Lagrange's equations. The obtained system of linear differential equations is reduced to a linear algebraic equation system and solved in the time domain and frequency domain by using Newmark average acceleration method. In order to establish the accuracy of the present formulation and results, the comparison study is performed with the published results available in the literature. Good agreement is observed. In the study, the effects of material distributions and temperature rising on the wave propagation of the FGM beam are investigated in detail.

  • Free vibration analysis of arbitrary quadrilateral thick plates with internal columns and elastic edge supports is presented by using the powerful pb-2 Ritz method and Reddy's third order shear deformation plate theory. The computing domain of arbitrary quadrilateral planform is mapped onto a standard square form by coordinate transformation. The versatile pb-2 Ritz functions defined by the product of a two-dimensional polynomial and a basic function are taken to be the admissible functions. Substituting these displacement functions into the energy functional and minimizing the total energy by differentiation, leads to a typical eigenvalue problem, which is solved by a standard eigenvalue solver. Stiffness and mass matrices are numerically integrated over the plate by using Gaussian quadrature. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method are demonstrated through several numerical examples by comparison and convergency studies. A lot of numerical results for reasonable natural frequency parameters of quadrilateral plates with different combinations of elastic boundary conditions and column supports at any locations are presented, which can be used as a benchmark for future studies in this area.

  • Since group velocity (GV) mismatch significantly limits the efficiency of nonlinear interactions such as second harmonic generation (SHG), several techniques have been developed to compensate GV mismatch.   • A company wishes to obtain a competitive edge by adopting an efficient logistics information system to control the logistics management process. The elements of the competitive edges a company targets are to maintain good quality, reduce cost and on-time delivery and those competitive edges are closely related to the cycle time of a product. The logistics information system in a company is also closely tied with other business activities than the logistics itself. Therefore it is essential to choose a system that will help rationalize the logistics but also overall business operations along the supply chain from manufacturing to distribution of the products. This paper aims to research and analyze a problem with a logistics information system through case study and to suggest a logistics information system with RFID in place adopted to eliminate problems such as damages, loss and defect rates.

  • Hydrodynamic stability equations are formulated for natural convection flows adjacent to a heated or cooled, inclined, isothermal surface in pure water at $4^{\circ}C$, where the density variation with temperature becomes nonlinear. The resulting stability equations, when reduced to ordinary differential equations by a similarity transformation, constitute a two-point boundary-value problem, which was solved numerically. It is found from the obtained stability results that the neutral stability curves are systematically shifted to have lower critical Grashof numbers, as the inclination angle of upward-facing plate increases. Also, the nose of the neutral stability curve becomes blunter as the angle increases. It implies that the greater the inclination of the upward-facing plate, the more susceptible of the flow to instability for the wide range of disturbance wave number and frequency.

  • An acoustic finite element model of a bridge is developed to evaluate the noise generated by the traffic-induced vibration of the bridge. The dynamic response of a multi-girder bridge, modeled by a 3-dimensional frame element model, is analyzed with a 3-axle 8 DOFs truck model and a 5-axle 13 DOFs semi-trailer. The flat plate element is used to analyze the acoustic pressure due to the fluid-structure interactions between the vibrating surface and contiguous acoustic fluid medium. The radiation fields of noise with a specified distribution of vibrating velocity and pressure on the structural surface are also computed using the Kirchhoff-Helmholtz integral. Although the noise produced by the bridge vibration is not serious in itself, which is below the audible frequency range, it should be considered as an interaction problem between vehicle noise and bridge vibration noise in order to evaluate the traffic noise around the bridge.

Classification of Phornographic Videos Based on the Audio Information (오디오 신호에 기반한 음란 동영상 판별)

  • As the Internet becomes prevalent in our lives, harmful contents, such as phornographic videos, have been increasing on the Internet, which has become a very serious problem. To prevent such an event, there are many filtering systems mainly based on the keyword-or image-based methods. The main purpose of this paper is to devise a system that classifies pornographic videos based on the audio information. We use the mel-cepstrum modulation energy (MCME) which is a modulation energy calculated on the time trajectory of the mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC) as well as the MFCC as the feature vector. For the classifier, we use the well-known Gaussian mixture model (GMM). The experimental results showed that the proposed system effectively classified 98.3% of pornographic data and 99.8% of non-pornographic data. We expect the proposed method can be applied to the more accurate classification system which uses both video and audio information.
