  • In the present study, the effects of thermal loading on the buckling and resonance frequency of graphene platelets (GPL) reinforced nano-composites are examined. Functionally graded (FG) material properties are considered in thickness direction for the thermal responses of the composite. The equivalent material properties are obtained using Halphin-Tsai nano-mechanical model for composite layers. Moreover, the effects of nano-scale sizes are taken into account, employing functionally modified couple stress (FMCS) parameter. In this regard, for the first time, it is demonstrated that at certain values of GPL weight fraction, thermal buckling occurs. In obtaining results of vibrational behavior, both analytical solution and deep neural network (DNN) methods are used. The DNN method needs low computational costs to predict the resonance behavior. A comprehensive parametric study is conducted to indicate the effects of several geometrical, material, and loading conditions on the vibrational and buckling behavior of cylindrical shell structures made of GPL-nanocomposites. It is shown that the effect of temperature change on the occurrence of buckling is vital while it has a negligible impact on the resonance frequency of the structure. Moreover, the size-dependency of the results is demonstrated, and it cannot be neglected in nano-scales.

  • The swollen tissue of wound origin formed after nailing ㄷ-shaped fastener to a stem of Platanus occidentalis L. was compared with normal tissue in the qualitative and quantitative anatomical aspects. The swollen tissue appeared to differ from normal tissue in irregular cell orientation, occurrence of tyloses in vessel element, less common appearance of pore multiples, narrower and shorter vessel element, lower vessel frequency, shorter and highly thick-walled wood fiber, greater number of bars per scalariform perforation plate in vessel element, larger ray frequency, larger ray width and lower ray height.

  • Varying dominant processes, including Tropical Cyclone (TC) and non-TC rainfall events, have been known to drive the occurrence of precipitation in South Korea. With the changes in the pattern of the Earth's climate due to anthropogenic activities, nonstationarity or changes in the magnitude and frequency of these dominant processes have been separately observed for the past decades and are expected to continue in the coming years. These changes often cause unprecedented hydrologic events such as extreme flooding which pose a greater risk to the society. This study aims to take into account a more reliable future climate condition with two dominant processes. Diverse statistical models including the hidden markov chain, K-nearest neighbor algorithm, and quantile mappings are utilized to mimic future rainfall events based on the recorded historical data with the consideration of the varying effects of TC and non-TC events. The data generated is then utilized to the hydrologic model to conduct a flood frequency analysis. Results in this study emphasize the need to consider the nonstationarity of design rainfalls to fully grasp the degree of future flooding events when designing urban water infrastructures.

  • In a high speed train, aluminium extruded panel is widely used in floor, side wall and roof structures for high bending stiffness and weight reduction. However, with some inevitable reasons, aluminium extruded panel shows inferior sound insulation performance compared with the flat panel having same weight. Especially, occurrence of local resonance modes in the particular frequency band, is one of the main reason in the deterioration of the sound insulation performance. Local resonance modes are generated in the structure which consists of periodic unit structure, such as the aluminium extruded panel. The local resonance frequency is determined by the specification of the unit structure. In this study, we predict the local resonance frequency band on the aluminium extruded panel used for the high speed train, and investigate how the design modification in the unit structure influences the local resonance frequency band and panel bending stiffness. The purpose of the study is to provide the design information for the effective unit structure in order to improve the sound insulation performance of the aluminium extruded panel.

  • In this paper, we propose a method of automatically constructing a dictionary by extracting unknown words from given eojeols in order to improve the performance of a Korean morphological analyzer. The proposed method is composed of a dictionary construction phase based on full text analysis and a dictionary construction phase based on web document frequency. The first phase recognizes unknown words from strings repeatedly occurred in a given full text while the second phase recognizes unknown words based on frequency of retrieving each string, once occurred in the text, from web documents. Experimental results show that the proposed method improves 32.39% recall by utilizing web document frequency compared with a previous method.

  • This study aims to analyze research trends in digital twin focusing on Germany, the US, and Korea. In Elsevier's Scopus, we collected 4,657 papers about digital twin published in from 2019 to 2023. Keyword frequency and centrality analysis were conducted on the abstracts of the collected papers. Through the obtained keyword frequencies, we tried to identify keywords with high frequency of occurrence and through centrality analysis, we tried to identify central research keywords for each country. In each country, 'digital_twin', 'machine_learning', and 'iot' appeared as research keywords with the highest interest. As a result of the centrality analysis, research on digital twin, simulation, cyber physical system, Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, and smart manufacturing was conducted as research with high centrality in each country. The implication for Korea is that research on virtual reality, digital transformation, reinforcement learning, industrial Internet of Things, robotics, and data analysis appears to have been conducted with low centrality, and intensive research in related areas appears to be necessary.

  • Three historical earthquake catalogues were compared with each other in the view of frequency of events per century, cumulative magnitude distribution, and annual earthquake occurrence rate in each unit grid of 0.1°by 0.1°. And, a method to determine earthquake epicenters and magnitudes was proposed given the historical earthquake data. With this method, the epicenters and magnitudes of future earthquakes in Korean penninsula for 1,000 years were generated with each earthquake catalogue. Earthquake PGAs with 10% exceedance probability in Seoul were calculated for each catalogue and compared.

  • Objectives: This study is aimed at offering basic data for making plans for offensive odor management after researching offensive odor occurrence and characteristics in Gangwon Province. Methods: The data used in the study is based on offensive odor data analyzed by the Gangwon Institute of Health and Environment from 2012 to 2019. The data were reclassified by year, month, facility, and region to identify characteristics of occurrence. Finally, a distribution map of offensive odors was created using ArcGIS. Results: The highest monthly frequency of offensive odor occurrence falls in June, August, and July, and the summer season and third quarter are the highest. According to the latest eight-year data for Gangwon Province, complaints about offensive odors in county areas are more frequent than those in city areas. There are many offensive odor complaints in Wonju, Cheorwon, and Heongsung. The main offensive odor emission facilities are livestock and waste treatment (recycling) facilities. Complaints about offensive odors are relatively lower the Yeongdong area than Yeongseo area, which is considered to be the result of characteristics of land-sea breezes and geographical factors. Offensive odors from livestock facilities count for an average of 53.9% of the total, and the inadequacy rate of livestock facilities averages 36.9%. Conclusions: To maintain a clean environment in Gangwon Province, it is strongly recommended that an offensive odor reduction plan for livestock facilities be established. Areas with a high density of offensive odor occurrence should be identified and systematically managed with short- and mid-term measures. If offensive odors is managed using GIS, it is possible to identify the characteristics of occurrence by time and space and also by facility. In addition, since systematic data management is possible, it is believed that a rapid response to offensive odors, prediction of their spread, and efficient management are possible.
