  • In underwater acoustic multipath channel, a performance of underwater acoustic (UWA) communication systems is affected by dynamic variation of boundary and high temporal and spatial variability of the channel conditions. Time and spatial variations of UWA channel induce a carrier frequency offset (CFO) since a phase and a frequency of received signal mismatch with a transmitting signal. Therefore, a performance of a phase shift keying underwater acoustic communication system is degraded. In this study, we have analyzed a performance of CFO estimation and compensation using a phase code in time and spatial variation channel. A constant amplitude zero autocorrelation (CAZAC) signal is applied as a phase code signal and its performance is evaluated in water tank. The bit error rate of a quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) system with a phase code is improved about 4 to 10 times better than that without a phase code.

  • This paper proposes a new architecture for DCT-based motion estimation and compensation. Previous methods do riot take sufficient advantage of the sparseness of 2-D DCT coefficients to reduce execution time. We first derive a recursion equation to perform DCT domain motion estimation more efficiently; we then use it to develop a wavefront array processor (WAP) consisting of processing elements. In addition, we show that the recursion equation enables motion predicted images with different frequency bands, for example, from the images with low frequency components to the images with low and high frequency components. The wavefront way Processor can reconfigure to different motion estimation algorithms, such as logarithmic search and three step search, without architectural modifications. These properties can be effectively used to reduce the energy required for video encoding and decoding. The proposed WAP architecture achieves a significant reduction in computational complexity and processing time. It is also shown that the motion estimation algorithm in the transform domain using SAD (Sum of Absolute Differences) matching criterion maximizes PSNR and the compression ratio for the practical video coding applications when compared to tile motion estimation algorithm in the spatial domain using either SAD or SSD.

  • For the purpose of designing novel capacitance pressure sensor, several effects on sensitivity such as parasitic capacitance effects, temperature/thermal drift and leakage current have to be eleiminated. This paper proposed the experimental studies on frequency compensation method by electronic circuit technique, C-V converting method with switched capacitor and C-F converting method with schmitt trigger circuit. The third interface circuit by frequency compensation method is composed to eliminate the drift and leakage component by comparision sensing frequency with reference frequency. The signal transmission is realized by digital signal to minimize the influence of noise and high resolution is obtained by means of increasing the number of digital bits. In the fabricated high performance C-V interface, the offset voltage was not appeared, and in case of voltage source, 4.0V, feed back capacitance, 10㎊, the pressure, 0~10 ㎪, the sensitivity of C-V converter is 28 ㎷/㎪.V, the temperature drift characteristic, 0.051 %F.S./$^{\circ}C$ and C-F converter shows -6.6 Hz/pa, 0.078 %F.S./$^{\circ}C$ respectively, relatively good ones.

  • In this paper, a CFNC (Complex Field Network Coding) scheme is presented, which focuses on improving transmission efficiency by reducing time slots that are needed to exchange data frames. Conventional CFNC scheme has the advantage of minimizing the number of time slots required for information exchanges. However, there exists serious performance deterioration because the transmit signals are interfered with each other. Moreover, when CFNC scheme is applied, the estimation and compensation performance of fine frequency offset severely deteriorates due to the multiple frequency offsets in received signal of relay node. In order to overcome these critical problems, we propose an improved CFNC scheme with modified maximum likelihood decision method which uses uplink transmit diversity. Also, we propose an enhanced fine frequency offset estimation method and a corresponding compensation method to deal with the multiple frequency offsets. Corresponding simulation results verify that the proposed methods are able to effectively solve the problems of CFNC scheme.

  • The impedance of the speaker is likely to be recognized as a fixed value. However, speaker impedance continues to vary with frequency variation, especially larger in resonant frequency region. The sound pressure level of loudspeakers is determined by the current flowing throughout the coil that consists loudspeakers. If loudspeakers are driven by voltage, sound pressure level of the loudspeaker is distorted by the variation of loudspeaker impedance. Current-drive of loudspeakers can solve this problem, but distortion of sound pressure level occurs in low frequencies due to resonance. The distortion can degrade the sound quality of the sound system. So to solve this problem, In this paper, we propose a resonance compensation circuit using DSP. we simulates audio systems using an equivalent model of loudspeakers to verify distortion of sound pressure level due to impedance variation and propose a circuit to compensate it. The proposed circuit is configured using a state variable filter and it can adjust the center frequency and output, so it will be used various sound systems.

  • This paper presents a high speed synchronous single inductor dual output boost converter using Type-III compensation for power management in smart devices. Maintaining multiple outputs from a single inductor is becoming very important because of inductor the sizes. The uses of high switching frequency, inductor and capacitor sizes are reduced. Owing to synchronous rectification this kind of converter is suitable for SoC. The phase is controlled in time sharing manner for each output. The controller used here is Type-III, which ensures quick settling time and high stability. The outputs are stable within $58{\mu}s$. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves a better overall performance. The input voltage is 1.8V, switching frequency is 5MHz, and the inductor used is 600nH. The output voltages and powers are 2.6V& 3.3V and 147mW &, 230mW respectively.

  • This paper presents a method of DCT-based illuminant compensation to enhance the accuracy of face recognition under an illuminant change. The basis of the proposed method is that the illuminant is generally located in low-frequency components in the DCT domain. Therefore, the effect of the illuminant can be compensated by controlling the low-frequency components. Moreover, a directional high-order local pattern descriptor is used to detect robust features in the case of face motion. Experiments confirm the performance of the proposed algorithm got up to 95% when tested using a real database.

  • A FRF-based substructuring method attempts to predict the dynamic characteristics of a complex structure from predetermined FRFs of the comprising uncoupled substructures. Although this method has the advantage of being able to incorporate experimental component FRFs directly, it is prone to errors : measurement errors, coordinate incompleteness, modal incompleteness, etc. Among the various sources of errors, this paper deals with the problem of modal incompleteness (or residual problem) of which importance is underestimated compared to others. It is a well-known rule of thumb that such a problem can be overcome by including modes up to 2 or 3 times the upper frequency of interest. Using a simulated case study, it is demonstrated that even including modes up to 20 times the upper frequency of interest does not guarantee a satisfactory result. A method to compensate the residual errors is introduced. This method requires the whole FRF matrices of substructures which is practically impossible for a complex structure. An applicable alternative is suggested and applied successfully to the case study. Finally, the effects of measurement errors on the residual compensation are also discussed.

  • Background: Pain medicine often requires medico-legal involvement, even though diagnosis and treatments have improved considerably. Multiple guidelines for pain physicians contain many recommendations regarding interventional treatment. Unfortunately, no definite treatment guidelines exist because there is no complete consensus among individual guidelines. Pain intervention procedures are widely practiced and highly associated with adverse events and complications. However, a comprehensive, systemic review of medical-dispute cases (MDCs) in Korea has not yet been reported. The purpose of this article is to analyze the frequency and type of medical dispute activity undertaken by pain specialists in Korea. Methods: Data on medical disputes cases were collected through the Korea Medical Association mutual aid and through a private medical malpractice liability insurance company. Data regarding the frequency and type of MDCs, along with brief case descriptions, were obtained. Results: Pain in the lumbar region made up a major proportion of MDCs and compensation costs. Infection, nerve injury, and diagnosis related cases were the most major contents of MDCs. Only a small proportion of cases involved patient death or unconsciousness, but compensation costs were the highest. Conclusions: More systemic guidelines and recommendations on interventional pain management are needed, especially those focused on medico-legal cases. Complications arising from pain management procedures and treatments may be avoided by physicians who have the required knowledge and expertise regarding anatomy and pain intervention procedures and know how to recognize procedural aberrations as soon as they occur.

  • M-WiMAX (Mobile-Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) system, which uses OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) technique, is known to be proper for mobile high-speed data transmission system. Nevertheless, M-WiMAX is seriously sensitive to IQ imbalance caused by the LO (Local Oscillator) at the receiver. In this paper, we analyze the effect of IQ imbalance on the system, and then propose a joint optimization scheme that can optimize DFE (Digital Front-end) of mobile modem by combining operation duplicated between AGC (Automatic Gain Control) and the estimation and compensation of IQ imbalance. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves the same performance of the conventional scheme while reducing the complexity of the H/W implementation.
