In recent years, the amount of sludge ash (SA) has considerably increased due to rapid urbanization and population growth. In addition, its storage in landfills induces environmental pollution and health problems. Therefore, its disposal in an environmentally friendly way has become more important. The main goal of this study is to investigate the reusability of sludge ash as an additive with polypropylene fiber (PF) to stabilize marginal sand based on the compressive strength performances from UCS tests. For this purpose, a series of UCS tests was conducted. Throughout the experimental study, the used inclusion rates were 10, 15, 20 and 30% for sludge ash and 0, 0.5 and 1% for polypropylene fiber by total dry weight of the sand+sludge ash mixture and the prepared samples were cured for 7 and 14 days prior to the testing. Freezing and thawing resistance of the mixture including 10% sludge ash and 0, 0.5 and 1% polypropylene fiber was also examined. On the basis of UCS testing results, it is said that sludge ash inclusion remarkably enhances UCS performance of sand. Moreover, the addition of polypropylene fiber to the admixtures including sand and sludge ash significantly improves their stress-strain characteristics and post-peak strength loss as well as UCS. As a result of this paper, it is suggested that sludge ash be successfully reused with polypropylene fiber for stabilizing sand in soil stabilization applications. It is also believed that the findings of this study will contribute to some environmental concerns such as the disposal problem of sludge ash, recycling, sustainability, environmental pollution, etc. as well as the cost of an engineering project.
Lactobacilli have been considered to play important roles in the health of human vagina. They secrete inhibitory substances to prevent vaginal infection by pathogenic organisms. In a previous study, we have isolated several lactobacilli from Korean woman and one of them (KLB46) was selected and indentified as Lactobacillu crispatus which showed high antimicrobial activity. In this study. cold adaptation prior to subsequent stresses exposure was examined whether L. crispatus KLB46 maintain the viability better than the non-adapted calls under stresses. For pharmaceutical formulation, the lyophilization process is required where stresses such as freezing/thawing and dehydration are routinely applied. Formulated L. crispatus KLB46 can be used for ecological treatment of bacterial vaginosis. The response of cold-adapted cells to other environmental stresses such as acid, heat, ethanol, NaCl, and H$_2$O$_2$ was also examined. The results showed that cold-adapted cells maintained higher survival rate compared with the non-adapted cells (freezing-thawing. 3-folds; dehydration: 3-folds; acid, 3-folds; heat, 10-folds). However, we did net observe any positive effect of cold adaptation on other stresses such as ethanol, NaCl and H$_2$O$_2$. When chloramphenicol was added during cold adaptation, adaptation effect was abolished. This confirms that de novo protein synthesis is necessary during the adaptation process. Moreover, we have identified cold shock protein homolog that codes for a major cold shock protein by PCR amplification using degenerate primers.

To investigate the physiological responses to naturally occurring winter freezing stress in creeping bentgrass, changes in carbohydrates were monitored during winter period. Turf quality and leaf growth was nearly parallel with temperature fluctuation. The concentration of glucose, fructose and sucrose in both shoot and root gradually increased from November to January, and then sharply decreased until April. Sucrose was the largest pool of soluble sugars. Fructan also slightly accumulated in both shoot and roots from November to February. Fructan hydrolysis in both organs was found to be much active between February to April. Shoot contained largely higher carbohydrate content in all compounds examined than roots did. Fructan was found to be a main carbohydrate storage form, showing the highest concentration (176.7 and 126.7 mg g-' DW for shoot and root in February). The depolymerization of fructan from February coincided with the high declines in mono- and disaccharide. These results suggest that the accumulation of non-structural carbohydrate until January could be associated with freezing tolerance, and the active decrease from February with shoot regrowth.

This paper presents some research results on the shrinkage characteristics and frost resistance before and after cracking of FR-ECC(Fire Resistance-Engineered Cementitious Composite). Also, a waterstop performance and exfoliating resistance of multi-layer lining specimens using FR-ECC and flexural performance of beam member by repaired FR-ECC are estimated in this paper. Experimental results indicate that the plastic shrinkage crack and length change ratio of FR-ECC have been reduced as compared with that of the existing repair mortar, and that its crack resistance on the dry shrinkage is improved under the confining stress. As well as FR-ECC has been great in the frost resistance and its tensile properties under the cracked state have been not reduced by freezing and thawing reaction. In addition, beam member by repaired FR-ECC have been increased in the flexural properties such as initial crack moment, yeild moment, and its crack width has been controled in a stable by the frexural failure.
This study was designed to investigate the stress distribution of alveolar bone in case of on masse retraction with lingual K-loop archwire using the 3-dimensional photoelastic stress analysis followed by stress freezing process. Lingual K-loop archwire which had loop in 15mm height was used and activated by retraction force of 350gm per each side. The results were as follows 1. Central incisor : As the closer side to crown, the larger tensile stress was distributed at both mesial and labial surfaces and the larger compressive stress was distributed at distal surface. As the closer side to root apex, the larger compressive stress was distributed at lingual surface. The compressive stress was distributed at root apex. 2. Lateral incisor : The tensile stress was distributed at the coronal side of mesial surface. The compressive stress was distributed at distal surface. As the closer side to crown, the larger tensile stress was distributed at labial surface. The tensile stress was distributed at coronal side and the compressive stress was distributed at apical side of lingual surface. The compressive stress was distributed at root apex. 3. Canine The tensile stress was distributed at coronal side and the compressive stress was distributed at apical side of mesial surface. The tensile stress was distributed at distal surface. As the closer side to crown, the larger tensile stress was distributed at both mesial and distal surfaces. The compressive stress was distributed at root apex. 4. Second premolar : The tensile stress was distributed at mesial surface. The compressive stress was distributed at coronal side and the tensile stress was distributed at apical side of distal surface. The compressive stress was distributed at coronal side of buccal surface. As the closer side to crown, the larger tensile stress was distributed at lingual surface. The compressive stress was distributed at root apex. 5. First molar . As the closer side to crown, the larger tensile stress was distributed at both mesial and distal surfaces. No stress was distributed at buccal surface and palatal root apex. As the closer side to crown, the larger tensile stress was distributed at both lingual surfaces. The compressive stress was distributed a4 buccal root apexes. 6. Second molar The compressive stress was distributed at all root apexes. As the closer side to crown, the larger compressive stress was distributed at both mesial and lingual surfaces, and the larger tensile stress at both distal and buccal surfaces. Transverse bowing effect was observed in on-masse retraction with lingual K-loop archwire, however vertical towing effect was not. Rather, reverse vortical bowing effect was developed.
Frost heaving and thawing settlement cause unexpected stress around buried pipelines, which results in deformation and permanent demage. A large scale laboratory test has been performed to observe deformation, stress, and temperature of a buried pipe during atmospheric temperature changes. From the experimental results, the stress concentrated around the buried pipe is inevitable and deformation is caused by the frost heaving. Even though backfill materials are sandy soils which are normally assumed to be non frost susceptible, it is revealed that frost demage can happen due to drainage condition, the level of ground water table, and water content.
The study was conducted to investigate the effects of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) combined with bovine serum albumin (BSA) or methyl-beta-cyclodextrin (MBCD) on plasma and acrosomal membrane damages, mitochondrial activity, morphological abnormality, motility, and oxidative stress in frozen-thawed boar sperm. In previous our study, 3 ng/mL ALA had been shown protective effect during freezing process of boar sperm. Therefore, we used 3 ng/mL ALA in present study and ALA was combined with same molar ratio of BSA or MBCD (ALA+BSA and ALA+MBCD, respectively). To confirm the effect of two carrier proteins, same volume of BSA and MBCD without ALA were added during cryopreservation. Membrane damage, mitochondrial activity, reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid peroxidation (LPO) levels were measured using flow cytometry, and movement of sperm tail as motility parameter and morphological abnormality were observed under light microscope. In results, all of sperm parameters were enhanced by ALA combined with BSA or MBCD compared to control groups (p<0.05). Mitochondrial activity, morphological abnormality, ROS and LPO levels in ALA+BSA or MBCD groups were no significant difference compared with ALA, BSA and MBCD treatment groups. On the other hand, plasma and acrosomal membrane intact, and sperm motility in ALA+MBCD group were higher than single treatment groups (p<0.05), whereas ALA+BSA did not differ. Our findings indicate that carrier proteins such as BSA and MBCD could improve the effect of ALA during cryopreservation of boar sperm, and treatment of ALA with carrier proteins enhance membrane integrity, mitochondrial activity through reduction of ROS-induced LPO.

The probiotic market is constantly continuing to grow, concomitantly with a widening in the range and diversity of probiotic products. Probiotics are defined as live microorganisms that provide a benefit to the host when consumed at a proper dose; the viability of a probiotic is therefore of crucial importance for its efficacy. Many products undergo lyophilization for maintaining their shelf-life. Unfortunately, this procedure may damage the integrity of the cells due to stress conditions during both the freezing and (vacuum-) drying process, thereby impacting their functionality. We propose a lysine-based mixture for rehydration of freeze-dried probiotics for improving their viability during in vitro simulated gastric and duodenum stress conditions. Measurement of the zeta potential served as an indicator of cell integrity and efficacy of this mixture, while functionality was estimated by adhesion to a human enterocyte-like Caco-2 cell-line. The freeze-dried bacteria exhibited a significantly different zeta potential compared to fresh cultures; however, this condition could be restored by rehydration with the lysine mixture. Recovery of the surface charge was found to influence adhesion ability to the Caco-2 cell-line. The optimum lysine concentration of the formulation, designated "Zeta-bio", was found to be 0.03 M for improving the viability of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum Lp-115 by up to 13.86% and a 7-strain mixture (400B) to 41.99% compared to the control rehydrated with distilled water. In addition, the lysine Zeta-bio formulation notably increased the adherence ability of lyophilized Lp-115 to the Caco-2 cell-line after subjected to the in vitro stress conditions of the simulated gastrointestinal tract passage.
Statement of problem: There are common clinical cases in which the mandibular first and second molars are missing unilaterally. Purpose: This study was designed to compare and evaluate the magnitude and distribution of stress produced by four kinds of mandibular unilateral free-end removable partial dentures that could be applied clinically in Kennedy class II cases. Material and methods: Four unilateral free-end removable partial dentures using clasp, Konus crown, resilient attachment, and flexible resin were fabricated on the photoelastic models of the Kennedy class II cases. The vertical load of 6㎏ was applied on the central fossa of the first molar of every removable partial denture in the stress freezing furnace and the photoelastic models were frozen according to the stress freezing cycle. After these models were sliced mesio-distally to a thickness of 6mm, the photoelastic isochromatic white and black lines of the sliced specimens were examined with the transparent photoelastic experiment device and photographs were taken with a digital camera. The fringe order numbers at eight measuring points in the photograph were measured with the naked eye. Results: The maximum fringe order number of each sliced specimen and the fringe order number at the residual ridge just below the loading point were in the decreasing order of the unilateral removable partial dentures using flexible resin followed by clasp, resilient attachment, and Konus crown. The fringe order number at the root apex of the second premolar was in the decreasing order of the unilateral removable partial dentures using clasp followed by flexible resin, Konus crown, and resilient attachment. Conclusion: The removable partial denture using Konus crown showed the most equalized stress distribution to the supporting alveolar bone of abutment teeth and residual ridge under the vertical loads. The removable partial denture using flexible resin can be applied to the case that has a better state of residual ridge than abutment teeth.

Despite frequent freezing injury to tea trees due low temperature, drought, and strong wind during wintertime, no comprehensive measurements have been taken. We selected and examined 9 locations in Hwagae-myeon and 4 places in Agyang-myeon, Hadong-gun, Gyeonsanggnam-do where low temperature damage had occurred between December 2010 and February 2011. Our objective is to examine the effect of frost damage on the morphological symptom and harvest of a tea tree exposed to a constant low temperature environment during wintertime. The results of our analyses on meteorological environment, tea leaf chromaticity, water content and trypan blue are as follows: (1) the number of days with temperature of $-10^{\circ}C$ or less, which were subject to frost damage to a tea tree were 8 and 13.6% during the winterization period in 2011; (2) the accumulated time was 1,308 minutes, and the longest duration at $-10^{\circ}C$ was 588 minutes from 21:08 p.m. 15 January to 7:30 a.m. $16^{th}$ January. The rainfall was only 104 mm which was 306 mm less than the previous year; (3) the lightness L values in 2011 were higher than in 2012 due to dehydration and necrosis by blue discoloration and red discoloration at all areas in chromaticity measurement; (4) the water content in a tea leaf in 2011 was higher than in 2012 due to low rainfall and strong wind, and almost no cell death phenomenon was observed from normal tea leaves subject to no low temperature stress in a trypan blue analysis; and (5) partial coloration due to cell death, however, took place in the leaves damaged by blue discoloration subject to low temperature stress, and most coloration due to cell death took place in the leaves damaged by red discoloration.
