  • This study is concerned with dynamic characteristics of a circular ring with a concentrated mass attached. The equations of motion are set up and are solved by using Laplace transformation. The ratio of a concentrated mass to the mass of circular ring is used as a parameter. Experiment was performed by employing impulse test and the results show good agreement with those of analysis. The results of this study can be utilized in vibrational analysis of axisymmetric shells with slight asymmetries.

  • A mathematical model of slip-in booster separation dynamics is described. A longitudinal 3-DOF(degree of freedom) 2-body dynamic model is developed to simulate the separation dynamics. Aerodynamic models of the missile and the exposed area of booster are built. And, gas generator pushing the booster out and internal channel pressure drop are modelled. To simulate the model, it is assumed that the missile can maintain the 1g level-fight condition during the separation. With this assumption, the interaction forces between missile and booster through the separation phases: phase 0: initial, phase 1: linear translation, and phase 2: free flight motion are defined. Using the simulation, missile flight conditions for slip-in booster`s safe separation, which can be represented by Mach vs. height envelope, are suggested.

  • Purpose: The axillary web syndrome (AWS) is a selflimiting cause of morbidity in the early postoperative period after axillary surgery. This article presents a rare complication developed after surgical treatment for axillary osmidrosis. Methods: A 55-year-old male patient underwent surgical excision of skin and glandular tissue for axillary osmidrosis. Three weeks after the surgery, he visited our department due to a visible web of left axillary skin overlying palpable cord extends into the medial ipsilateral arm. There was a taut and tender cord of tissue under the skin and shoulder abduction was limited to less than 90 degrees. He was diagnosed with AWS and treated with conservative management. Results: Four months later, AWS resolved completely without any treatment and patient was free of pain or motion restriction. Conculsion: Axillary web syndrome has been described as frequent complication after axillary lymph node dissection or sentinel node biopsy, but not after surgical treatment of axillary osmidrosis. Surgeons must be aware of the risk of axillary web syndrome after treatment of axillary osmidrosis.

  • This paper presents a finite element method to analyze the free vibration of a flexible HDD composed of the spinning disk-spindle system with fluid dynamic bearings(FDBs), the head-suspension-actuator with pivot bearings, and the base plate with complicated geometry. Experimental modal testing shows that the proposed method well predicts tue vibration characteristics of a HDD. This research also shows that even the vibration motion of the spinning disk corresponding to half-speed whirl and the pure disk mode are transferred to a head-suspension-actuator and base plate through the air bearing and the pivot bearing consecutively. The proposed method can be effectively extended to investigate the forced vibration of a HDD and to design a robust HDD against shock.

  • This paper describes the development of a low-power electrocardiogram (ECG) touch sensor intended for the use with two dry metal electrodes. An equivalent ECG extraction circuit model encountered in a ground-free two-electrode configuration is investigated for an optimal sensor read-out circuit design criteria. From the equivalent circuit model, (1) maximum sensor resolution is derived based on the electrode's background thermal noise, which originates from high electrode-skin contact impedance, together with the input referred noise of instrumentation amplifier (IA), (2) 60 Hz electrostatic coupling from mains and motion artifact are also considered to determine minimum requirement of common mode rejection ratio (CMRR) and input impedance of IA. A dedicated ECG read-out front end incorporating chopping scheme is introduced to provide an input referred circuit noise of 1.3 ${\mu}V_{rms}$ over 0.5 Hz ~ 200 Hz, CMRR of IA > 100 dB, sensor resolution of 7 bits, and dissipating only 36 ${\mu}W$. Together with 8 bits synchronous successive approximation register (SAR) ADC, the sensor IC chip is implemented in 0.18 ${\mu}m$ CMOS technology and integrated on a 5 cm $\times$ 8 cm PCB with two copper patterned electrodes. With the help of proposed touch sensor, ECG signal containing QRS complex and P, T waves are successfully extracted by simply touching the electrodes with two thumbs.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of background knowledge on problem solving. To achieve this aim, I proposed the model which shows problem solving process centering around background knowledge, conducted the lessons concerning the concept 'weightlessness' on pre-service elementary teachers, and then classified the pre-service elementary teachers into several groups by the difference of the results presented in the process of solving the problems on weightlessness. And I examined qualitatively the effects of background knowledge on problem solving through the interview with 11 volunteers. On the cause of the failing the problem solving, the failure of acquiring or activating the background knowledge related to the learning concept was most frequently, secondly the use of the background knowledge unrelated to the learning concept, and thirdly the failure of understanding the teaming concept. To acquire or activate the background knowledge related to the teaming concept was more difficult than to understand the new teaming concept, and the cases that use the background knowledge unrelated to the learning concept failed to solve problem. The result of interview, all interviewee understood the learning concept correctly, but all of them who fail to acquire or activate the background knowledge related to the learning concept, or use the background knowledge unrelated to the learning concept, could not solve the problem.

  • Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was performed to study the stress induced grain boundary migration caused by the interaction of dislocations with a gain boundary. The simulation was carried out in a Ni block (295020 atoms) with a ∑ = 5 (210) grain boundary and an embedded atom potential for Ni was used for the MD calculation. Stress was provided by indenting a diamond indenter and the interaction between Ni surface and diamond indenter was assumed to have a fully repulsive force to emulate a faction free surface. Results showed that the indentation nucleated perfect dislocations and the dislocations produced stacking faults in the form of a parallelepiped tube. The parallelepiped tube consisted of two pairs of parallel dislocations with Shockley partials and was produced successively during the penetration of the indenter. The dislocations propagated along the parallelepiped slip planes and fully merged onto the ∑ = 5 (210) grain boundary without emitting a dislocation on the other grain. The interaction of the dislocations with the grain boundary induced the migration of the grain boundary plane in the direction normal to the boundary plane and the migration continued as long as the dislocations merged onto the grain boundary plane. The detailed mechanism of the conservative motion of atoms at the gram boundary was associated with the geometric feature of the ∑ = 5 (210) grain boundary.

  • This paper presents the design concept and operation results of float-off for FSO (340,000 DWT Class, ELF AMENAM KPONO Project) built on the ground, without dry dock facilities. It was the first attempt to build FSO, completely, on the ground and launch it using DBU (Double Barge Unit, which was connected by rigid frame structure.) The major characteristics of FSO, which are similar to general VLCC type hull, including topside structure, weigh 51,000 metric ton. In order to have sufficient stability during the deck immersion of DBU, while passing through a minimum water plane area zone, proper trim control was completed with LMC (Load Master Computer). The major features of the monitoring system include calculation for transverse bending moment, shear force, local strength check of each connector, based on component stress, and deformation check during the load-out and float-off. Another major concern during the operation was to avoid damages at the bottom and sides of FSO, due to motion & movement after free-floating; therefore, adequate clearances between DBU and FSO were to be provided, and guide posts were installed to prevent side damage of the DBU casings. This paper also presents various measures that indecate the connector bending moment, damage stability analysis, and mooring of DBU during float off.

  • Chemical accidents generated during maintenance, repair, and normal operation, such as dispersion, fire, and explosions, can cause massive losses like a 2012 hydro fluorine leak in Gumi, South Korea. Since this accident, many researches have studied physical mitigation systems. However, due to many difficulties including potential costs and lack time, it is really hard for many companies to install mitigation systems without prior knowledge. Thus, the efficacy of mitigation system should be evaluated. This study assesses a dike design considering the fluid velocity at an open hole when a leakage accident occurs. It is assumed that leakage materials follow a free fall motion. Throughout case studies, a current KOSHA guide for a dike design was evaluated and new guidelines handling various conditions were proposed.

  • Recently, landslides frequently happen at a natural slope during period of intensive rainfall. With rapidly increasing population of steep terrain in Korea, landslides have become one of the most significant natural hazards. Thus, it is necessary to protect people from landslides and to minimize the damage of houses, roads and other facilities. To accomplish this goal, many landslide prediction methods have been developed in the world. In this study, a simple landslide prediction system that enables people to escape the endangered area is developed. The system is focused to debris flows which happen frequently during periods of intensive rainfall at steep slopes in Kangwondo. This system is based on the wireless sensor network that is composed of sensor nodes, gateway, and server system. Sensor nodes that are composed of sensing part and communication part are newly developed to detect sensitive ground movement. Sensing part is designed to measure tilt angle and acceleration accurately, and communication part is deployed with Bluetooth (IEEE 802.15. I) module to transmit the data to the gateway. To verify the feasibility of this landslide prediction system, a series of laboratory tests is performed at a small-scale earth slope supplying rainfall by artificial rainfall dropping device. It is found that sensing nodes installed at slope can detect the ground motion when the slope failure starts. It is expected that the landslide prediction system by wireless senor network can provide early warnings when landslides such as debris flow occurs, and can be applied to ubiquitous computing city (U-City) that is characterized by disaster free.
