A bacterium which grows on cyclohexanol as sole carbon and energy source was isolated from sludge of industrial areas in Taegu and identified as Acinetobacter calcoaceticus C-15. The growth medium for the optimal culture condition was composed of 0.2% cyclohexanol, 0.11% $NH_4Cl$, 0.05% $KH_2PO_4$, 0.2% $K_2HPO_4$, 0.02% $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$, and 0.05% yeast extracts. The optimal pH value and temperature for the growth were 7.2 and $33^{\circ}C$, respectively. Specific growth rate of A. calcoaceticus C-15 at $33^{\circ}C$ on the cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone was $0.27hr^{-1}$ and $0.15hr^{-1}$, respectively. Growth yield for cyclohexanol was 1.0. The bacteria utilized ethanol, 1-butanol, 1-pentanol, and cyclohexanol as a carbon source but not methanol, 1-hexanol, m-cresol, glycerol, and cyclohexane. The bacteria grew on benzoate, adipate, acetate, and citrate, but did not on salicylate, phthalate, p-hydroxybenzoate, and gluconate. A calcoaceticus C-15 did not utilize all kind of sugars other than xylose. Cell-free extracts contained $NAD^+$-linked cyclohexanol dehydrogenase which catalized the oxidation of cyclohexanol to cyclohexanone.

The purpose of this study is to reveal that coloring status and the degree of damage and the kinds of pigments used in large buddhist painting (Gwaebultaeng) of Tongdosa temple using a scientific analysis methods. It was observed that the physical damage patterns of the Gwaebultaeng were folding, lifting, fading, and peeling. Lead red, cinnabar and organic pigments were used as red pigments. Malachite and atacamite were used as green pigments, azulite and lazulite were blue pigments, lead white and talc were white pigment. It is estimated that overlapping organic pigments on the lead white were used as the yellow pigment and carbon was the black pigment. Through the analysis of the particle status of the pigments, it was confirmed that different types of raw materials were used for the green pigment, and the crystal form was easily distinguishable. Also, the dark blue color and the light blue color differed from each other depending on the size and shape of the raw material particles. Yellow and purple colors were organic pigments which did not have a graininess. The yellow and purple colors were organic pigments free from the graininess, and the pigments of dark red pigments was found to be mixed with the orange color pigments and carbon particles.

A bacterial strain producing a high level of an extracellular phytase was isolated from livestock waste water, identified as a strain of Pseudomonas fragi and designated as Pseudomonas fragi Y9451. Under the phytase production medium, the activity of phytase reached the highest level after 120 hours of incubation. On the effect of carbon sources on the phytase production, the most favorable carbon source for phytase production was fructose. As for the effect of nitrogen sources, high levels of phytase activity were detected in the medium containing nutrient broth as the nitrogen source. Free $PO_4^{3-}$ inhibited phytase production with increasing concentration of $KE_2PO_4$ and phytate in the media. The addition of $CaCl_2$ and $MgSO_4$ also resulted in the inhibition of phytase production. To investigate the effect of aeration on the phytase production, different volumes of culture broth in Erlenmeyer flasks were incubated in rotary shaker at the speed of 200 rpm. As a result, a high level of phytase activity was detected at small volume of culture broth as compared to larger volume because of its more aerobic condition.

A combined process consisted of a biofilm reactor and a continuously stirred-tank reactor (CSTR) was investigated for highly loaded ammonium wastewater treatment via nitrite accumulation. To enhance ammonium oxidizing bacteria over nitrite oxidizing bacteria on the surface of carriers, the biofilm reactor was operated at temperature of $35^{\circ}C$ for more than three months but the influent ammonium (500 mg-N/L) was partially oxidized to nitrite (240 mg-N/L). As pH was increased from 7.5 to 8.0, nitrite accumulation was fully achieved due to the inhibition of nitrite oxidizing bacteria under high free ammonia concentration. The biofilm reactor performance was severely deteriorated at the hydraulic retention time of 12 hr, at which incomplete nitrification of ammonia was observed. Various solubilization methods were applied to sewage sludge for enhancing its biodegradability and the combined method, alkaline followed by ultrasonic, gave the highest solubilization efficiency (58%); the solubilized solution was used as the external carbon source for denitrification reaction in CSTR. FISH analysis showed that the dominant microorganisms on the carriers were ammonium oxidizing bacteria such as Nitrosomonas spp. and Nitrospirar spp. but low amounts of nitrite oxidizing bacteria as Nitrobacter spp. was also detected.

[ $SiO_2$ ] effect on the electrochemical properties of polymeric gel electrolytes(PGEs) reinforced with glass fiber cloth(GFC) was investigated . PGEs were composed of polyacrylronitrile(PAN), poly(vinylidenefluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (P(VdF-co-HFP)), $LiClO_4$ and three kind of plasticizer(ethylene carbonate, dietyl carbonate, propylene carbonate). $SiO_2$ was added to PGEs in the weight fraction of 10, 20, $30\%$ respectively. PGEs containing $SiO_2$ showed conductivity of over $10^{-3}S/cm\;at\;23^{\circ}C$ and electrochemical stability window to 4.8V. In the impedance spectra of the cells, which were constructed by lithium metals as electrodes, interfacial resistance increased due to growth of passivation layer during storage time and remarkable difference was not observed with content of $SiO_2$. In the impedance spectra of the lithium ion polymer batteries consisted of $LiClO_2$ and mesophase pitch-based carbon fiber(MCF), ohmic cell resistance of $SiO_2-free$ PGE was changed continuously with number of cycle, but those of $SiO_2-dispersed$ PGEs were not. Discharge capacity of the PGE containing $20wt\%\;SiO_2$ showed 132 mAh/g at 0.2C rate and $85\%$ of discharge capacity was retained at 2C rate.
In this study, the effect of laminate thickness on the compressive behaviour of composite materials is investigated through systematic experimental work using the stacking sequences, $[O_4]_{ns},{\;}[45/0/-45/90]_{ns}$ and $[45_n/0_n/-45_n/90_n]_s$ (n=2 to 8). Parameters such as fibre volume fraction, void content, fibre waviness and interlaminar stresses, influencing compressive strength with increasing laminate thickness are also studied experimentally and theoretically. Furthermore the stacking sequence effects on failure strength of multidirectional laminates are examined. For this purpose, two different scaling techniques are used; (1) ply-level technique $[45_n/0_n/-45_n/90_n]s$ and (2) sublaminate level technique $[45/0/-45/90]_{ns}$. An apparent thickness effect existes in the lay-up with blocked plies, i.e. unidirectional specimens ($[O_4]_{ns}) and ply-level scaled multidirectional specimens ($[45_n/0_n/-45_n/90_n]_s$). Fibre waviness and void content are found to be main parameters contributing to the thickness effect on the compressive failure strength. However, the compressive strength of the sublaminate level scaled specimens ($[45/0/-45/90]_{ns}$) is almost unaffected regardless of the specimen thickness (since ply thickness remains constant). From the investigation of the stacking sequence effect, the strength values obtained from the sublaminate level scaled specimens are slightly higher than those obtained from the ply level scaled specimens. The reason for this effect is explained by the fibre waviness, void content, free edge effect and stress redistribution in blocked $0^{\circ}$ plies and unblocked $0^{\circ}$ plies. The measured failure strengths are compared with the predicted values.
To investigate the usefulness of Kenaf(Hibiscus cannabinus L.) as mushroom culture media source, we analyze physical condition and contents of nutritional components. The water absorption rate of Kenaf bast was 578% and it was 95% higher than that of poplar sawdust's. This was caused by Kenaf's porous cellular structure. so it could give more moisture and oxygen to cultured mushroom. Total carbon contents of Kenaf was 91.4%, it was quite higher than that of poplar sawdust, wheat bran and rice bran. Total nitrogen content was 1.76% and C/N ratio was 51.9. The content of NFE(Nitrogen free extract) was 46.6% and it was similar with rice bran. Cellulose content was higher than poplar but lignin content was lower. specially hemicellulose and pectin complex which more digestible carbon source to mushroom was 3.7% higher than poplar. Mineral component and amino acid contents were also maintained high compared with poplar. Fe was 4.2 times, P 3.2 times, K 2.2 times more and Ca was higher 16 mg/kg than poplar. The content of amino acid was quite more higher than poplar sawdust but lower than chaff. Consequently Kenaf had a good trait for basic support material in mushroom culture media and also had a good character as nutritional source.
A field study was conducted for 20 soil columns to investigate the denitrification in the grassland with a method introducing $C_2H_2$ in the denitrifying system. Since acetylene blocked the pathway from $N_2O$ to $N_2$, all the free products of denitrification consisted of nitrous oxide. In this study, denitrification was measured as $N_2O$. Results are as follows. 1. In most of boils examined, denitrification was observed as $N_2O$ when acetylene was introduced into the denitrification system while $N_2O$ was scarcely evolved without acetylene in the system. 2. Denitrification occurred even in the grassland soils when they were saturated with water. Denitrification was nil or negligible without water saturation. 3. Denitrification loss far 3 days incubation(from 13th to 16th day after urea application) was 4.2% in average and 14.2% in maximum. 4. Soil chemical properties such as nitrate nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, total nitrogen, total carbon and mineralizable carbon did not show clear relationships with denitrificatien, probably since soil chemical properties were analysed for the soils after incubation.
A heart supplies blood of about 15, 000 liters to each human organ in a day. A normal function of heart valves is necessary to accomplish these enormous work of heart. The disease of heart valve develops to a narrowness of a closure, resulting in an abnormal circulation of blood. In an attempt to eliminate the affliction of heart valves, the operative method to replace with artificial heart valves has developed and saved numerous patients over past 30 years. This replacement operation has been performed since early 1960`s in Korea, but all the artificial heart valves used are imported from abroad with very high costs until recent years. New artificial heart valves have been developed in Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology since early 1980`s. The first developed valve was designed with a free-floating pyrolytic carbon disk that is suspended in a titanium cage. The design of the valve was tested in vitro, and in animals in 1987. The results from this study was that the eccentrically placed struts creates a major and minor orifice when the disc opens and stagnation of flow in the area of the minor orifice has led to valve thrombosis. In this work, the design of the valve was changed from a single - leaflet valve to double - leaflet one in order to resolve the problems observed in the first - year tests. Morphological and hemodynamic studies were made for the newly designed valves through the in vitro and in vivo tests. The design and partial materials of the artificial heart valve was improved comparing with first - year`s model. The disc in the valve was modified from single - leaflet to bi - leaflet, and the material of the cage was changed from titanium metal to silicon - alloyed pyrolytic carbon. A test was made for the valve in order to examine its mechanical performance and stability. Morphological and hemodynamic studies were made for the valve that had been implanted in tricuspid position of mongrel dogs. All the test animals were observed just before the deaths. A new artificial heart valve was designed and fabricated in order to resolve the problems observed in the old model. The new valve was verified to have good stability and high resistance to wear through the performance tests. The hemodynamic properties of the valve after implantation were also estimated to be good in animal tests. Therefore, the results suggest that the newly designed valve in this work has a good quality in view of the biocompatibility. However, valve thrombosis on valve leaflets and annulus were found. This morphological findings were in accordance with results of surface polishing status studies, indicating that a technique of fine polishing of the surface is necessary to develop a valve with higher quality and performance.
Wet oxidations (WO) of quinoline in aqueous solution were carried out at $225^{\circ}C$ and $250^{\circ}C$. In the WO at $250^{\circ}C$, quinoline was degraded completely within 30 min and the reduction in total organic carbon (TOC) of 63% was achieved during 120 min. However, the rate of the reduction in TOC was only 13% within 240 min during the WO at $225^{\circ}C$. Nicotinic and acetic acid were found to be main intermediates formed during the oxidation of quinoline. With the addition of the homogeneous catalyst $CuSO_4$ or more easily oxidizable phenol, WOs of quinoline were also carried out under moderate conditions at $200^{\circ}C$. The catalytic WO with $CuSO_4$ of 0.20 g/L showed the destruction rates of quinoline and TOC comparable to those in the WO at $250^{\circ}C$. The WOs of quinoline-phenol mixture exhibited induction periods to degrade quinoline and phenol during which free radicals were produced to initiate WOs. With increasing initial concentrations of phenol at a given initial concentration of quinoline, the induction periods in the destructions of quinoline and phenol became shorter and the reduction in TOC increased from 60% to 75% during 180 min of the WOs. The reduction rate of an induction period decreased as increasing the initial concentration ratio of phenol to quinoline. On the other hand, phenol degradation in the WOs of quinoline-phenol mixtures required a longer induction period and proceeded slower compared to the case of the WO of phenol.
