  • The microcapsules containing fragrant oil as functional material were prepared by in-situ polymerization with prepolymer that was made from melamine-formaldehyde (MF) as wall material of microcapsules. The effects of polymerization variables, such as the nature and concentration of surfactants, stirring rate, and stirring time, on the size and distribution of the particles were investigated. Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermal analysis, particle size analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation were used to investigate the characteristics of microcapsules. Through the FT-IR and SEM analysis, we found that the prepared microcapsules were containing fragrant oil and the shape of particle was spherical. The nature and concentration of surfactants, stirring rate, and stirring time had profound effects on the particle size and particle size distribution.

  • Microcapsules containing fragrant oils as a core material were prepared by in situ polymerization, using melamine-formaldehyde prepolymer as the wall material. The several parameters, such as stirring times, stirring rates, emulsifier types, emulsifier concentrations, and the viscosity of the core materials, affect the characteristics of the microcapsules. These parameters were investigated by the analyses of microcapsule size, particle size distribution, and morphology. The average microcapsule size decreased with an increase in stirring time, stirring rate, emulsifier concentration, and viscosity of the core material. It was also found that poly(vinyl alcohol) as a protective colloid could enhance the stability of the melamine-formaldehyde microcapsules.

  • We analyzed the functional fragrant components of three species of Cymbidium oriental orchids using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). For the comparative analysis, C. goeringii 'Minchunran', 'Jugeumhwa', C. forrestii 'Chwigae', 'Songmae', 'Yongja', and C. faberi 'Choemae', 'Namyangmae', 'Hwaja' were investigated. Major fragrant components detected by GC/MS were selected on the basis of more than 3% value according to the analysis of peak area (%). We found that ${\alpha}$-bergamotene, which has a cytotoxic effect on breast cancer, cervical cancer, and glioblastoma, and nerolidol, which induces apoptosis of human hepatoma cells (HepG2), inhibits the growth of Streptococcus mutans and babesiosis, and has antibacterial properties, are common substances produced by C. goeringii L. Nerolidol and ${\beta}$-bisabolene, which is cytotoxic and suppresses the growth of malignant melanoma cells (B16-F10), HepG2, and leukemia cells (HL-60, K562), are major substances in C. forrestii R. Furthermore, ${\alpha}$-pinene, which inhibits the growth of gliobastoma cells (SF-767) and inhibits the anti-inflammatory action of hepatoma cells (BEL-7402); 1,8-cineole, which is a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of gastric ulcers; and 1,3,7-octatriene, which functions as a pheromone, are the most common substances in C. faveri R. Thus, substances identified as major fragrant components in oriental orchid species have multiple beneficial applications in human health. This research forms the basis for further studies of the roles of major fragrant components in oriental orchids.

  • The fragrance has a great influence on consumers' cognition, emotional response, attitude, memory, and behavior since the human sense of fragrance is physically and neurologically closer to the hippocampus of the brain. The fragrance materials are exposed to humans ranging from skin interaction to inhalation. We have lots of stories and literature on the usage of fragrance in everyday life in Korea from the Dangun myth to present K-beauty cosmetics. In Korean history, such archives as Dong-Eui-Bo-Gam and Gyu-Gak-Chong-Seo at Joseon Dynasty clearly recorded the application of many weeds for the manufacture of various fragrance products. In recent times, fragrances in weeds have been being applied to touch the consumer's feelings. The present mini-review is an attempt to introduce and discuss fragrant weeds in the archives and in science journals, effects of fragrant weeds on the human electroencephalographic activity, and effects of fragrance on the behavior of consumers. This review could be useful for the development of natural cosmetic and perfumery products from fragrant weeds.

  • Phalaenopsis (P.) has various species, and some of them have strong fragrance. There are fragrant species such as P. bellina, P. violacea, P. schilleriana and used in breeding program for fragrant Phalaenopsis. This study was performed for establishment of fragrance analysis system using GC-MS and electronic nose in eight P. resources. We analyzed fragrant compound using the tissue of sepal, petal, column, and lip of P. '3010'. The percentage of the major compound was high in the petal and lip tissues. The main compound emitted from P. bellina was linalool (21.21%). It was possible that fragrance pattern could be analyzed among the resources using the electronic nose. Discriminant function analysis (DFA) was more useful than the principal component analysis (PCA) in statistics program. We utilized GC-MS method for the major compounds of flower from our breeding materials. This study would be useful to the fragrant analysis system for the fragrant orchid breeding in the future.

  • The paper is an attempt to explore various aspects of Thai traditional cake culture in order to understand the characteristics of Thai tradition cakes and their significance in Thai cultural life. The study will focus on cake culture in both folk culture and court culture as well as observe the changes of this culture in the present time of globalization. In the text book on Thai Khanom, Kobkhaew Natpinit sums up the characteristic of Thai traditional 'Khanom' as follows: 1. Thai traditional (cake) Khanom are mostly made from rice, sugar and coconut. 2. The tastes of Thai Khanom are sweet and rich in coconut cream with a little bit of salty taste to enhance the flavour of coconut. 3. The colour and scents of Thai Khanom are naturally fragrant. Fresh fragrant flowers are used to add pleasing fragrance and colour to Thai Khanom.

  • In this study, melamine-formaldehyde microcapsules were prepared via in situ polymerization using peppermint oil as a core material, melamine-formaldehyde as the wall material, Tween 20 as the emulsifier, and poly (vinyl alcohol) as a protective colloid. The melamine-formaldehyde microcapsules prepared in this study were then evaluated with regard to their structures, thermal properties, particle size distributions, morphologies, and release behaviors.

  • This study investigated EEG signal, subjective fragrance sensation, and the preference of differently colored cotton knit treated with Citrus unshiu oil containing microcapsules as well as examined their relationships for providing regression models on subjective fragrance preference. Color variables combining 2-level hue (Yellow and Green) and 3-level tone (strong, pale, and grayish) were applied by dyeing prior to microcapsule treatment. We invited 28 female college students aged 20's for EEG signal experiments and subjective fragrance sensations with fragrant knit by rubbing. EEG signals at $mid-{\alpha}$, $fast-{\alpha}$, and $low-{\beta}$ showed significant differences depending on color; Green had more relative power values and grayish tone did more at $low-{\beta}$. Even though subjective sensation showed no significant differences depending on color, some of them such as Fresh, Comfort, and Natural showed significant correlations with EEG signal at $low-{\beta}$, which means that the fragrance sensations of Citrus unshiu fragrance are concerned with attention and alertness for Koreans. Fragrance preference was regressed significantly using some EEG signals and subjective sensation. The results could be utilized to value up fragrant textiles by Citrus unshiu oil.
