In this study, mechanical characteristics test of Functionally Gradient Materia (FGM) was performed by means of Modified Small Punch (MSP) Test with FGM; NiCrAlY-8YSZ and PSZ-Ni. To determine fracture mechanic factor, it was carried out MSP test that has possibility with small specimen (10*10*0.5 mm$^{t}$ ) and AE test to analyze micro fracture mechanism. As a result, fracture behavior became varied from brittle fracture to ductile as the content of Ni(or NiCrAlY) composition was increased and fracture energy was increased too. AE characteristics demonstrated that AE technique can detect the onset of fracture processes and AE energy was suddenly increased in the vicinity of maximum load. Since Young's modulus, fracture stress and fracture toughness was determined by MSP test, it can be known that the composition of NiCrAly 75%/8YSZ25% has the best mechanical property and furthermore this result is supported with fracture surface observation.
In this study, we investigated compressive characteristics of seawater-absorbed carbon-epoxy composite under hydrostatic pressure environment. The hydrostatic pressures applied were 0.1 MPa, 100 MPa, 200 MPa, and 270 MPa. The results showed that the compressive elastic modulus increased about 10 % as the hydrostatic pressure increased from 0.1 MPa to 200 MPa. The modulus increased 2.3 % more as the pressure increased to 270 MPa. Fracture strength and fracture strain increased with pressure in a linear fashion. Fracture strength increased 28 % and fracture strain increased 8.5 % as the hydrostatic pressure increased from 0.1 MPa to 270 MPa.
The application of this new design approach called fracture mechanics allow one to determine the maximum allowable stress from the knowledge of the largest expected flow size and the plane strain fracture toughness of a material. In this study we examined the relation between retained austenite, mechanical property and fracture toughness accompanied by austempering heat treatment. Fracture toughness values and retained austenite volume were higher with the ADI(austempered ductile iron) which were austempered at $380^{\circ}C$ than austempered at $320^{\circ}C$. Additionally, fracture toughness values were increased for 1~2 hour austempering time but it was slowly decreased for 5 hour ADI maintaining the predominant fracture toughness($K_{IC}:83MPa{\sqrt{m}}$) is obtained following condition, namely, austempering temperature and time ($380^{\circ}C$ and 1 hour).
Continuous fiber ceramic composites(CPCCs) having the advantages of ceramics resistance to heat, eroson can be applied in chemical reactors and engine. CFCCs has relatively high stiffness in spite of low weight. In particular, it exhibits greatly increased toughness, which serves to decrease its inherent damage characteristics of the brittle nature of monolithic ceramics. In this wort, tensile and flexural test for SCS6 fiber/ $Si_3N_4$ matrix composites were studied. An objective of this study is to obtain the basic quantities of mechanical properties for tension and flexural test and link these to the fracture resistance behavior. Then, we showed that wok of fracture concept was useful as a method for describing fracture restance behavior of CFCCs.
Numerical experiments on biological interfacial layer, DEJ by finite element software ABAQUS have been conducted to study its fracture behavior including crack bridging / arresting characteristics in the model. Crack growth simulation has been carried out by numerical tool, XFEM, devoted to study cracks and discontinuities. The fracture toughness of DEJ has been estimated before and after crack bridging. The implications of bridging in numerical study of fracture behavior of DEJ-like biological interface have been discussed. It has been observed that the results provided by the numerical studies without proper accommodation of bridging phenomenon can mislead. This study can be helpful for understanding the DEJ-like biological interface in terms of its fracture toughness, an important material characteristics. This property of the material is an important measure that has to be taken care during design and manufacturing processes.
In this study, the characteristic of fractured portion and shape on solder joints were investigated according to the thermal shock test for Automotive Application Component using Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu solder, which has a outstanding property as Lead-free solder. The value of pull and shear strength was decreased in principle after 432 cycles thermal shock test. In addition, fracture mode was verified by using EDS and SEM to observe fractured shape on the solder joints before and after thermal shock. In before thermal shock test, the fracture mode revealed typically solder layer's fracture mode. In after thermal shock test, we identified multiple fracture mode of the ductile and brittle fracture. Even though same composition of solder was used to experimental for estimating. the fracture mode varied on the fracture portion's height and the directional angles of shear strength. In conclusion, we identified that mechanical strength was affected on the solder layer's fracture mode.
The influence of the fracture process zone (FPZ) on the fracture properties is one of the hottest topics in the field of fracture mechanics for cementitious materials. Within the FPZ in front of a traction free crack, cohesive forces are distributed in accordance with the softening stress-separation constitutive relation of the material. Therefore, further crack propagation necessitates energy dissipation, which is the work done by the cohesive forces. In this paper $g_f$, the local fracture energy characterizing the energy consumption due to the cohesive forces, is discussed. The computational expression of $g_f$ in the FPZ can be obtained for any stage during the material fracture process regarding the variation of FPZ, whether in terms of its length or width. $G_{fa}$, the average energy consumption along the crack extension region, has also been computed and discussed in this paper. The experimental results obtained from the wedge splitting tests on specimens with different initial notch ratios are employed to investigate the property of the local fracture energy $g_f$ and the average value $G_{fa}$ over the crack extension length. These results can be used to indicate the influence of the FPZ. Additionally, changes in the length of the FPZ during the fracture process are also studied.
In this research, an efficient mixed mode I/II fracture criterion is developed for fracture investigation of orthotropic materials wherein crack is placed along the fibers. This criterion is developed based on extension of well-known Maximum Tensile Stress (MTS) criterion in conjunction with a novel material model titled as Equivalent Reinforced Isotropic Model (ERIM). In this model, orthotropic material is replaced with an isotropic matrix reinforced with fibers. A comparison between available experimental observations and theoretical estimation implies on capability of developed criterion for predicting both crack propagation direction and fracture instance, wherein the achieved fracture limit curves are also compatible with fracture mechanism of orthotic materials. It is also shown that unlike isotropic materials, fracture toughness of orthotic materials in mode $I(K)_{IC}{\mid})$ cannot be introduced as the maximum load bearing capacity and thus new fracture mechanics property, named here as maximum orthotropic fracture toughness in mode $I(K_{IC}{\mid}^{ortho}_{max})$ is defined. Optimum angle between crack and fiber direction for maximum load bearing in orthotropic materials is also defined.
In this paper, cracks with different angles are prefabricated in rock specimens to study the fracture characteristics of rock based on CT images. The rock specimens are prepared for compression tests according to the standard recommended by ISRM (International Society for Rock Mechanics). The effects of different angles on rock mechanical properties and crack propagation fracture modes are analyzed. Then, based on the cohesive element method and CT images, the relationship between porosity and Young's modulus as well as the fracture property is explored by the numerical modelling. In the modelling, the distribution of Young's modulus is determined by the CT image through the field variable method. The results show that prefabricated cracks reduce the mechanical properties of rock. The closer the angles of the prefabricated crack is, the greater the Young's modulus of the rock sample is. The failure process of each specimen with prefabricated cracks is formed by the initiation and propagation of crack, and the angle of the prefabricated crack will affect the type of extended crack. As part of the numerical model proposed in this paper, the microstructure of rocks is reflected by CT images. The numerical results verify the effectiveness of the cohesive element method in the study of crack propagation for rock. The rock model in this paper can be used to predict engineering disasters such as collapse and landslide caused by rock fracture, which means that the methodology adopted in this paper is comprehensive and important to solve rock engineering problems.
Dense $Al_2$O$_3$-30%TiC and Si$_3$N$_4$ ceramic tool materials with various grain size were produced by sintering-HIP treatment and by gas-pressure sintering. The fracture toughness was measured by indentation fracture and indentation strength method for both ceramics with various grain size. The effect of the grain size on the fracture toughness was evaluated, and the correlation between fracture toughness and mechanical properties such as hardness, Young\`s modulus and flexural strength of these ceramic were also investigated. The highest fracture toughness of around 6.7 MPa.m(sup)1/2 was obtained in Si$_3$N$_4$ ceramics with grain size of 1.58${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. With a larger grain size of $Al_2$O$_3$-30%TiC and Si$_3$N$_4$ ceramics, the fracture toughness was generally increased. The increased fracture toughness of these ceramic also improved the flexural strength although the hardness decreased considerably. Similar results were obtained in grain size and mechanical properties on both $Al_2$O$_3$-30%TiC and Si$_3$N$_4$ ceramic tool materials.
