In the present research, for the first time, the vibrational as well as buckling characteristics of a three-layered curved nanobeam including a core made of functionally graded (FG) material and two layers of smart material-piezo-magneto-electric-resting on a Winkler Pasternak elastic foundation are examined. The displacement field for the nanobeam is chosen via Timoshenko beam theory. Also, the size dependency is taken into account by using nonlocal strain gradient theory, aka NSGT. Then, by employing Hamilton's principle, energy procedure, the governing equations together with the boundary conditions are achieved. The solution procedure is a numerical solution called generalized differential quadrature method, or GDQM. The accuracy and reliability of the formulation alongside solution method is examined by using other published articles. Lastly, the parameter which can alter and affect the buckling or vocational behavior of the curved nanobeam is investigated in details.
Calculating size-dependent mechanical properties of the nano-scale materials usually involves cumbersome numerical and theoretical works. In this paper, we aim to present a closed-form relation to calculate the length-dependent Young's modulus of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) based on nonlocal elasticity theory. In this regard, a single wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) is considered as a rod structure and the governing nonlocal equations are developed under uniaxial tensile load. The equations are solved using analytical methods and strain distribution, total displacement and the size-dependent equivalent Young's modulus are obtained. Further, the results are compared with the molecular dynamics results from the literature. The outcome indicates that the calculated relations are coincident with the molecular dynamics results.
New generation of tall and complex buildings systems are now introduced that are reflective of the latest development in materials, design, sustainability, construction, and IT technologies. While the complexity in design is being overcome by the availability and advances in structural analysis tools and readily advanced software, the design of these buildings are still reliant on minimum code requirements that yet to be validated in full scale. The involvement of the author in the design and construction planning of Burj Khalifa since its inception until its completion prompted the author to conceptually develop an extensive survey and real-time structural health monitoring program to validate all the fundamental assumptions mad for the design and construction planning of the tower. The Burj Khalifa Project is the tallest structure ever built by man; the tower is 828 meters tall and comprises of 162 floors above grade and 3 basement levels. Early integration of aerodynamic shaping and wind engineering played a major role in the architectural massing and design of this multi-use tower, where mitigating and taming the dynamic wind effects was one of the most important design criteria established at the onset of the project design. Understanding the structural and foundation system behaviors of the tower are the key fundamental drivers for the development and execution of a state-of-the-art survey and structural health monitoring (SHM) programs. Therefore, the focus of this paper is to discuss the execution of the survey and real-time structural health monitoring programs to confirm the structural behavioral response of the tower during construction stage and during its service life; the monitoring programs included 1) monitoring the tower's foundation system, 2) monitoring the foundation settlement, 3) measuring the strains of the tower vertical elements, 4) measuring the wall and column vertical shortening due to elastic, shrinkage and creep effects, 5) measuring the lateral displacement of the tower under its own gravity loads (including asymmetrical effects) resulting from immediate elastic and long term creep effects, 6) measuring the building lateral movements and dynamic characteristic in real time during construction, 7) measuring the building displacements, accelerations, dynamic characteristics, and structural behavior in real time under building permanent conditions, 8) and monitoring the Pinnacle dynamic behavior and fatigue characteristics. This extensive SHM program has resulted in extensive insight into the structural response of the tower, allowed control the construction process, allowed for the evaluation of the structural response in effective and immediate manner and it allowed for immediate correlation between the measured and the predicted behavior. The survey and SHM programs developed for Burj Khalifa will with no doubt pioneer the use of new survey techniques and the execution of new SHM program concepts as part of the fundamental design of building structures. Moreover, this survey and SHM programs will be benchmarked as a model for the development of future generation of SHM programs for all critical and essential facilities, however, but with much improved devices and technologies, which are now being considered by the author for another tall and complex building development, that is presently under construction.
As the global large-scale infrastructure construction market expands, the construction of civil engineering structures in extreme environments such as cold or hot regions is being planned or constructed. Accordingly, the construction of the pile foundation is essential to secure the bearing capacity of the upper structure, but there is a concern about loss of stability and function of the pile foundation due to the possibility of ground deformation in extreme cold and hot regions. Therefore, in this study, a new type of pile foundation is developed to respond with the deformation of the ground, and the ground deformation that can occur in extreme cold and hot region is largely divided into heaving and settlement. The new type of pile foundation is a form in which a cylinder capable of shrinkage and expansion is inserted inside the steel pipe pile, and the effect of the cylinder during the heaving and settlement process was analyzed numerically. As a result of the numerical analysis, the ground heaving caused excessive tensile stress of the pile, and the expansion condition of the cylinder shared the tensile stress acting on the pile and reduced the axial stress acting on the pile. Ground settlement increased the compressive stress of the pile due to the occurrence of negative skin friction. The cylinder must be positioned below the neutral point and behave in shrinkage for optimum efficiency. However, the amount and location of shrinkage and expansion of cylinder must comply with the allowable displacement range of the upper structure. It is judged that the design needs to be considered.

This study, using the MCC Model to consider consolidation, estimated the range within which no influences occur from lateral movement and its amount of the foundation pile and abutment on the soft ground. This study performed finite element analyses, with variations on the adhesiveness and internal friction angle, depth of soft clay, embankment height, consolidation parameters, and separation distance between the abutment and embankment. The abutment's horizontal displacement exhibits linear change with a longer separation distance, and changes into an exponential form as the embankment gets closer to the abutment. As the soft clay layer becomes 10 m deeper, the horizontal displacement tends to increase 1.5~3.0 times. However, it decreases at a rate of 0.3~0.95 when adhesiveness is increased by 10 $kN/m^2$ and internal friction angle is increased by $5^{\circ}$. The increase change rate in a lateral movement amount becomes greater if it is closer to the abutment when the abutment separation distance is long. When the distance is short, the change rate of horizontal displacement increases in similar a way, but it tends to be decreasing overall.

Improved numerical method to obtain the exact stiffness matrices is newly proposed to perform the spatially coupled elastic and stability analyses of non-symmetric and open/closed thin-walled beam on elastic foundation. This method overcomes drawbacks of the previous method to evaluate the exact stiffness matrix for the spatially coupled stability analysis of thin-walled beam-column This numerical technique is accomplished via a generalized eigenproblem associated with 14 displacement parameters by transforming equilibrium equations to a set of first order simultaneous ordinary differential equations. Next polynomial expressions as trial solutions are assumed for displacement parameters corresponding to zero eigenvalues and the eigenmodes containing undetermined parameters equal to the number of zero eigenvalues are determined by invoking the identity condition. And then the exact displacement functions are constructed by combining eigensolutions and polynomial solutions corresponding to non-zero and zero eigenvalues, respectively. Consequently an exact stiffness matrix is evaluated by applying the member force-deformation relationships to these displacement functions. In order to illustrate the accuracy and the practical usefulness of this study, the numerical solutions are compared with results obtained from the thin-walled beam and shell elements.

Fast bridge construction has been increasingly needed according to the changed construction environment. This paper deals with quasi-static tests on precast piers for bridge substructures. One of the most crucial aspect of the design of precast prestressed concrete bridge piers is the seismic performance. Seven precast pier elements were fabricated. The amount of prestressing bars, the prestressing force, and the location and number of the joint between segments were the main test parameters. Test results showed that the introduced axial prestress made the restoration of the deformation under small lateral displacement and minor damage. However, there was no effect of the prestress when the plastic hinge region was damaged severely due to large lateral displacement. Judging from the observed damage, the design of the joints in precast piers should be done for the first joint between the foundation and the pier segment. The amount of the necessary prestressing steel may be designed to satisfy the P-M diagram according to the service loads, not by having the same steel ratio as normal RC bridge piers. In order to satisfy the current required displacement ductility, it is necessary to have the same amount of the transverse reinforcements as RC piers. As the steel ratio increases, the energy absorption capacity increases. The number of joints showed a little influence on the energy absorption capacity.
The yaw and interference effects of blades affect aerodynamic performance of large wind turbine system significantly, thus influencing wind-induced response and stability performance of the tower-blade system. In this study, the 5MW wind turbine which was developed by Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA) was chosen as the research object. Large eddy simulation on flow field and aerodynamics of its wind turbine system with different yaw angles($0^{\circ}$, $5^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$) under the most unfavorable blade position was carried out. Results were compared with codes and measurement results at home and abroad, which verified validity of large eddy simulation. On this basis, effects of yaw angle on average wind pressure, fluctuating wind pressure, lift coefficient, resistance coefficient,streaming and wake characteristics on different interference zone of tower of wind turbine were analyzed. Next, the blade-cabin-tower-foundation integrated coupling model of the large wind turbine was constructed based on finite element method. Dynamic characteristics, wind-induced response and stability performance of the wind turbine structural system under different yaw angle were analyzed systematically. Research results demonstrate that with the increase of yaw angle, the maximum negative pressure and extreme negative pressure of the significant interference zone of the tower present a V-shaped variation trend, whereas the layer resistance coefficient increases gradually. By contrast, the maximum negative pressure, extreme negative pressure and layer resistance coefficient of the non-interference zone remain basically same. Effects of streaming and wake weaken gradually. When the yaw angle increases to $45^{\circ}$, aerodynamic force of the tower is close with that when there's no blade yaw and interference. As the height of significant interference zone increases, layer resistance coefficient decreases firstly and then increases under different yaw angles. Maximum means and mean square error (MSE) of radial displacement under different yaw angles all occur at circumferential $0^{\circ}$ and $180^{\circ}$ of the tower. The maximum bending moment at tower bottom is at circumferential $20^{\circ}$. When the yaw angle is $0^{\circ}$, the maximum downwind displacement responses of different blades are higher than 2.7 m. With the increase of yaw angle, MSEs of radial displacement at tower top, downwind displacement of blades, internal force at blade roots all decrease gradually, while the critical wind speed decreases firstly and then increases and finally decreases. The comprehensive analysis shows that the worst aerodynamic performance and wind-induced response of the wind turbine system are achieved when the yaw angle is $0^{\circ}$, whereas the worst stability performance and ultimate bearing capacity are achieved when the yaw angle is $45^{\circ}$.
High-density rapid expansion material is a method that increases the solid volume of injection materials due to hydration and foam reactions at the same time as spraying. It is an effective method for securing ground stability, restoring subsidence, and loading during construction of structures. In this regard, through the mechanical experiments of injection materials, the stability of the foundation ground of the structure and the effect of increasing the endurance using site construction were analyzed. The results of the experiment showed that the unit weight of soil decreased by 10.5% after injection of the filling material, and the allowable support for the structure was deemed safe, and the subsidence by each section after ground improvement was determined to be safe at 2.28, 1.55 and 0.46 cm, respectively, with an acceptable subsidence of less than 5 cm. After the field test, five inclinometers were installed on the top floor of the target building to measure the displacement of the X and Y axes. As a result of the measurement, no displacement related to the phenomenon of inequality or subsidence cracks of the structure was measured for about 16 months (509 days) after construction. This can be judged to be a sufficient increase in the stability of the ground after the injection of rapid expansion.

This study was conducted in 8.2m wide single-span greenhouse to investigate the effect of presence or absence of rafter steel pipe joint and foundation conditions on greenhouse structural performance. Structural performance was evaluated by static loading test using the structural performance evaluation system for single-span greenhouse. The measured displacement was compared with the predicted result by numerical analysis. The displacement of each measurement location showed a significant difference regardless of the conditions of the foundation and presence or absence of rafter steel pipe joint. Compared to the hinge conditions, the difference in structural performance of the greenhouse in the fixed conditions was seen to be relatively large. The difference in structural performance according to presence or absence of rafter steel pipe joints, the lateral stiffness of the joint was 8.1% greater.
