  • In this paper, an optimal allocation method of a hybrid active power filter in an active distribution network is designed based on the differential evolution algorithm to resolve the harmonic generation problem when a distributed generation system is connected to the grid. A distributed generation system model in the calculation of power flow is established. An improved back/forward sweep algorithm and a decoupling algorithm are proposed for fundamental power flow and harmonic power flow. On this basis, a multi-objective optimization allocation model of the location and capacity of a hybrid filter in an active distribution network is built, and an optimal allocation scheme of the hybrid active power filter based on the differential evolution algorithm is proposed. To verify the effect of the harmonic suppression of the designed scheme, simulation analysis in an IEEE-33 nodes model and an experimental analysis on a test platform of a microgrid are adopted.

  • In this study, a two-dimensional oscillating foil with forward speed in a propagating wave flow field was considered. The time-mean power to maintain the heaving and pitching motions of the foil was analyzed using the perturbation theory in an ideal fluid. The power, which was a non-linear quantity of the second-order, was expressed in terms of the quadratic transfer functions related to the mutual product of the heaving and pitching motions and incoming vertical flow. The effects of the pivot point and phase difference among the disturbances were studied. The negative power, which indicates energy extraction from the fluid, is shown as an example calculation.

  • The present study was attempted to investigate flow interference effects and the aerodynamic characteristics of the front and rear wings of a joined-wing aircraft by changing the configuration variables. The study was performed using a computational fluid dynamics(CFD) tool to demonstrate forward flight and analyze aerodynamic characteristics. A total of 9 configurations were analyzed with variations on the position, height, dihedral angle, incidence angle, twist angle, sweepback angle, and wing area ratio of the front and rear wings while the fuselage was fixed. The quantities of aerodynamic coefficients were confirmed in accordance with joined-wing configurations. The closer the front and rear wings were located, the greater the flow interference effects tended. Interestingly, the rear wing did not any configuration change, the lift coefficient of the rear wing was decreased when adjusted to increase the incidence angle of the front wing. The phenomenon was appeared due to an effective angle of attack alteration of the rear wing resulting from the flow interference by the front wing configurations.

  • This paper describes the recognition method of moving objects in mobile robot with an omnidirectional camera. The moving object is detected using the specific pattern of an optical flow in omnidirectional image. This paper consists of two parts. In the first part, the pattern of an optical flow is investigated in omnidirectional image. The optical flow in omnidirectional image is influenced on the geometry characteristic of an omnidirectional camera. The pattern of an optical flow is theoretically and experimentally investigated. In the second part, the detection of moving objects is presented from the estimated optical flow. The moving object is extracted through the relative evaluation of optical flows which is derived from the pattern of optical flow. In particular, Focus-Of-Expansion (FOE) and Focus-Of-Contraction (FOC) vectors are defined from the estimated optical flow. They are used as reference vectors for the relative evaluation of optical flows. The proposed algorithm is performed in four motions of a mobile robot such as straight forward, left turn, right turn and rotation. Experimental results using real movie show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • This paper analyzes a new method for reducing boiling water reactor fuel temperature during a Loss of Coolant Accident (LOCA). The method uses a device called Reverse Flow Restriction Device (RFRD) at the inlet of fuel bundles in the core to prevent coolant loss from the bundle inlet due to the reverse flow after a large break in the recirculation loop. The device allows for flow in the forward direction which occurs during normal operation, while after the break, the RFRD device changes its status to prevent reverse flow. In this paper, a detailed simulation of LOCA has been carried out using the U.S. NRC's TRACE code to investigate the effect of RFRD on the flow rate as well as peak clad temperature of BWR fuel bundles during three different LOCA scenarios: small break LOCA (25% LOCA), large break LOCA (100% LOCA), and double-ended guillotine break (200% LOCA). The results demonstrated that the device could substantially block flow reversal in fuel bundles during LOCA, allowing for coolant to remain in the core during the coolant blowdown phase. The device can retain additional cooling water after activating the emergency systems, which maintains the peak clad temperature at lower levels. Moreover, the RFRD achieved the reflood phase (when the saturation temperature of the clad is restored) earlier than without the RFRD.

  • In this paper, we propose a method that can detect and trace the end point of real - time reinforcement steel to various environmental conditions of industrial field by using Median flow and Depth information. We proposed a method to derive two steel end points by using Median filter, Binarization, Morphology, and Blob algorithm on image depth information. The coordinates of the final position were determined by comparing the coordinates of the reinforcement steel endpoints detected in the Depth image and the position tracking coordinates of the reinforcement steel using Median Flow. As a result, when the existing Median Flow method was used, the success rate of the final position determination of reinforcement steel of 75% was increased to 95% when the Depth of reinforcement steel was used.

  • This study aims to design a portable desalination device and discusses the feasibility of the device for overcoming a shortage of safe drinking water. A low-energy, self-supporting, and portable desalination device is designed based on forward osmosis (FO) using an ammonium bicarbonate solution. Experiments with various concentrations of ammonium bicarbonate solution and sodium chloride solution showed that the portable desalination device's performance such as volume and flow rate of desalting water and time required satisfied drinking water standards. The device performance is controlled by varying the concentration and temperature of the solution.

  • The metal flow and the strain distribution is investigated for the steady state and non-steady state bulk deformation processes by using an improved visioplasticity method which includes the effective smoothing scheme. The comparison of various smoothing schemes leads to the selection of the five- point least square smoothing method which is employed to reduce the measurement errors. As a steady state forming process experiments are carried out for axisy- mmetric forward extrusion through conical and curved dies of various area reduc- tions using Aluminum and steel billets. Axisymmetric backward extrusion is chosen for a nonsteady state forming process. In axisymmetric forward extrusion the results from visioplasticity show that the curved die of a fourth-order polynomial renders more uniform distribution of strain rates and strains. Higher reduction leads to greater strain rates at the outer side of the billet. The visioplastic observation for axisymmetric backward extrusion as a non-steady state deformation process shows the concentration of higher strain at the inner wall of the extruded product. The visioplastic results in forward extrusion are in agreement with the computed results by the finite element method. It is thus shown that the visio- plasticity combined with a smoothing technique is an effective method to determine the pattern and the distribution of strain rates and strains.

  • Forward osmosis (FO) is an emerging membrane technology with potential applications in desalination and wastewater reclamation. The osmotic pressure gradient across the FO membrane is used to generate water flux. In this study, flux performance and foulant deposition on the FO membrane were systematically investigated with a co-current cross-flow membrane system. Sodium alginate (SA), bovine serum albumin (BSA) and tannic acid (TA) were used as model foulants. Organics adsorbed on the membrane were peeled off via oscillation and characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). When an initial flux of $8.42L/m^2h$ was applied, both flux reduction and foulant deposition were slight for the feed solution containing BSA and TA. In comparison, flux reduction and foulant deposition were much more severe for the feed solution containing SA, as a distinct SA cake-layer was formed on the membrane surface and played a crucial role in membrane fouling. In addition, as the initial SA concentration increased in FS, the thickness of the cake-layer increased remarkably, and the membrane fouling became more severe.
