  • These studies were carried out to investigate the oviposition and host feeding characteristics of Neochrysocharis formosa Westwood, an endoparasitoid of Liriomyza trifolii. N. formosa female oviposited inside the abdomen at the rear end of the host larva. Number of eggs and host feeding per day of N. formosa tended to increase as temperatures go up. The ratio of oviposition and host feeding of N. formosa were 0.5, 0.9, 1.0 and 1.0 at 15, 20, 25, and 30$^{\circ}C$, respectively. In 25$^{\circ}C$, number of eggs and host feeding were 176.0 and 188.7, respectively, and aduly female longevity was 11.8 days. N. formosa female preferred to the 3rd rather than 1st and 2nd larva for oviposition and host feeding.

  • The present study was designed to investigate the chemical composition and antioxidant activities of Prunus salicina Formosa produced in Gimcheon. The free sugar amounts in Prunus salicina Formosa were fructose>glucose>sucrose>maltose, and malic acid contents in Prunus salicina Formosa were the highest among all the organic acids found in the present study. Each Prunus salicina Formosa extract was obtained by treating Prunus salicina Formosa with distilled water, 80% ethanol, 60% acetone, and 80% methanol at 25 and $50^{\circ}C$. The highest contents of total polyphenol and flavonoid were observed in the 60% acetone extract and 80% ethanol extract, respectively. The 60% acetone extract exhibited the greatest DPPH radical scavenging ability, reducing power, and nitrite scavenging ability. However, SOD-like activity was not considerably different for all the extracts studied. The results from the present study could be helpful for developing antioxidant products using Prunus salicina Formosa produced in Gimcheon.

  • Occurrence of Liriomyza trifolii and its biological control efficacy using Neochrysocharis formosa were evaluated in two eggplant cropping systems of spring and autumn cultivation. L. trifolii adults began to be attracted on a yellow sticky traps from late April and they increased from early June. A high density of L. trifolii adults was maintained from middle June to middle July. The releases of two N. formosa per plant with 3 times as weekly intervals from May 25, 2004 for spring culture resulted control effect of 90.1% in parasitism to L. trifolii in late July. The releases of two N. formosa per plant with 4 times as weekly intervals from August 31, 2004 for autumn culture resulted control effect of 81.3% in population of L. trifolii with 64.4-69.9% in parasitism.

  • To determine the antimicrobial activity of methanol extracts form 'Formosa' plum against 4 kinds of pathogenic bacteria, the fermosa were got at different growth stages and were extracted using methanol, respectively. The Formosa methanol extracts treated with 5.0 mg/disc showed the highest antimicrobial activity against 4 kinds of pathogenic bacteria and those of Formosa 1-4(immature fruit), which thin out 10∼25 days before foal harvest, showed higher antimicrobial activity against gram positive and gram negative microorganisms than Formosa 5-6(mature fruit). Especially, the methanol extracts of Formosa 1 and 2 were exhibited the strongest growth inhibiting activities to these bacteria. The minimal inhibitory concentrations(MIC) of immature Fomosa methanol extracts was 320 $\mu\textrm{g}$/mL against Escherichia coli 0157:H7 and 160 $\mu\textrm{g}$/mL against Staphylococcus aureus respectively. The MIC of immature Formosa methanol extracts to Salmonella typhimurium and Listeria monocytogenes were 640 $\mu\textrm{g}$/mL. These results suggest that methanol extracs of immature formosa can be used as an effective natural antimicrobial agent in food.

  • Physiocheical properties and chemical compositions of two plums(Oishiwase, Formosa ) produced in Kimcheon area were investigated . Chemical compositions of two plum cultivars were similar except nitrogen free extract(NFE) . NFE value of Formosa was higher than Oishiwase . Alcohol insoluble substance content, total soluble pectin, total sugar content and total organic acid content of Oishiwase were 2.08%, 14.16%, 5.07% and 949.16mg%, respectively. In case of Formosa cultivar, those were 50%, 15.42%, 5.91% and 985.91mg%, respectively. Fructose content among free sugars of two plum cultivars range from 3.97-3.45% and the other were glucose, sucrose and inositol, 1.83-1.53%, 0.08-0.05% and 0.04-0.03%, respectively. Malic acid content was 35-373mg% and others were levulinic acid, lactic acid, citric acid, succinic acid and fumaric acid in the decreasing order.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate host preference, occurrence and intraplant distribution of Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) and Encarsia formosa (Gahan) in greenhouse. T vaporariorum preferred cucumber over tomamto. 7: vaporariorum adults distributed at upper part of cucumber plant. Nymphs also distributed at upper part in early growing stage of cucumber but became to distribute lower part after 40 days. E. formosa adults were found mainly at mid-upper part of plant but there was no significant difference in statistics all analysis among each parts and also mummy distributed mid-low part. E. formosa were released when five ir: vaporariorum were caught by yellow sticky trap per week in glasshouse. The treatment of one tag (50 mummies) of E. formosa per five plants controlled successfully the 7: vaporariorum population after 40 days.

  • In searching for novel agents for skin anti-aging from natural resources, we found that the extract of the fruiting bodies of Ramaria formosa (R. formosa) had significant antioxidant and human neutrophil elastase (HNE) inhibitory activities. R. formosa extract exhibited a considerable DPPH radical scavenging activity with an antioxidant content of 117.0mg/mL (ascorbic acid equivalents) at the concentration of $500{\mu}g/mL$. The capacity of R. formosa extract to scavenge peroxy radicals measured by ORAC assay also showed dose-dependent antioxidant effect with $ORAC_{Roo}$ (trolox equivalents, $1{\mu}M$) values of 0.8, 5.2, and 7.8 at the concentrations of 1, 10, and $20{\mu}g/mL$. The cellular antioxidant capacity of R. formosa extract was investigated by assaying the cellular fluorescence intensity using dichlorodihydrofluorescein (DCF). The cellular oxidative stress induced by AAPH, $Cu^{2+}$ or $H_2O_2$ in HepG2 cells was significantly attenuated by more than 30% at $20{\mu}g/mL$ of R. formosa extract. HNE activity was reduced by treatment with R. formosa extract in a dose-dependent manner, and the $ED_{50}$ value for the ethanol extract of R. formosa was $42.9{\mu}g/mL$. R. formosa extract did not exhibited antimicrobial activity against four microorganisms including Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis), Escherichia coli (E. coli), Candida albicans (C. albicans), Aspergillus oryzae (A. oryzae). Furthermore, the extract did not affect the inflammatory cytokine production of interleukin-10 and interferon-${\gamma}$ in NK92 cells. From the above results, we found that R. formosa extract has considerable antioxidant and elastase inhibitory effects, and does not stimulate immune cells. These findings suggest that R. formosa extract may be used as a bioactive component in cosmetic composition.
