Soot and PAH Formation in Counterflow Diffusion Flames of Ethylene-Propane (에틸렌/프로판 대향류 확산화염에서 PAH 와 매연의 생성특성)

  • Sooting characteristics of counterflow ethylene/propane mixture flames have been experimentally studied to investigate the fuel structure effect on PHM and soot formation. Laser-induced incandescene and laser-induced fluorescene techniques were employed to measure soot volume fraction and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentration, respectively. Importance of $C_{3-}$species on PAH growth as well as the H-abstraction-C$_2$ $H_2$addition (HACA) mechanism has been emphasized, considering that PAH growth rate is greater for with mixed fuel than fer pure fuel flames. It was also confirmed that HACA pathways are the dominant soot growth mechanism. A new PAH growth model including both $C_{2-}$ and $C_{3-}$growth mechanisms is proposed based on the experimental results.

  • It is knwon that in the reaction of .alpha.-diethylaminoacetophenone with potassium cyanide and ammonium carbonate in dilute alcohol solution, 5-phenylhydantoin is formed. In this study the mechanism of the reaction by which diethylaminomethyl group is eliminated, was investigated with applying GC/MS-system. From the fragmentation pattern of mass spectrum of the unknwon compound, which has mol peak 112, it was identified as diethylaminoacetonitrile. According to our GC/MS study of the reaction mixture, it seems likely that diethylaminomethyl group is eliminated neither through the alkali degradation of .alpha.-diethylaminoacetophenone to aldehyde nor after the anticipated hydantoin formation. But it is believed that in the course of ring formation through an unidentified mechanism diethylaminomethyl group is eliminated.

  • A bubble-powered microactuator is designed conceptually. And the actuation mechanism due to bubble growth and collapse is studied numerically and analytically. In this analysis, it is estimated that the time lag for bubble formation on micro line heater, the duration of the bubble growth and collapse and the pressure change in actuator due to the bubble evolution. Based on these calculations, the actuator control scheme is visualized. This actuator may be applicable to the system which needs to pump liquid correctly and regularly.

  • The finite element method is applied to analyze the mechanism of metal cutting, especially micro metal cutting. This paper introduces some effects, such as constitutive deformation laws of workpiece material, friction of tool-chip contact interfaces, tool rake angle and also simulate the cutting process, chip formation and geometry, tool-chip contact, reaction force of tool. Under the usual plane strain assumption, quasi-static analysis were performed with variation of tool-chip interface friction coefficients and tool rake angles. In this analysis, cutting speed, cutting depth set to 8m/sec, 0.02mm, respectively. Some cutting parameters are affected to cutting force, plastic deformation of chip, shear plane angle, chip thickness and tool-chip contact length and reaction forces on tool. Several aspects of the metal cutting process predicted by the finite element analysis provide information about tool shape design and optimal cutting conditions.

  • Unsteady three-dimensional flowfield generated by transverse fuel injection into a supersonic mainstream is simulated with a DES turbulence model. Comparisons are made with experimental results in terms of the temporal eddy position and eddy formation frequency. The vorticity field around the jet exit is also analyzed to understand the formation mechanism of the large eddy structures. Results indicate that the DES model correctly predicts the convection characteristics of the large scale eddies. However, it is also observed that the numerical results slightly over-predict the eddy formation frequency. The large eddy structures are generated as the counter-rotating vortices are detached alternately in the upstream recirculation region.

  • A clear understanding of the surface formation mechanism due to cutting is very important to help produce a good quality surface. Much of the roughness along the length of a bar being cut in a lathe can be explained in terms of macroscopic tool shape and feed rate. However, the roughness along the direction of cutting requires a different explanation. The formation of surface roughness is a problem in flow and fracture of materials in the vicinity of the tool edge. On a microscopic scale the cutting edge is rounded because it is impossible to grind a perfectly sharp cutting edge. Even if a perfectly sharp cutting edge were obtained it would soon become dull as a result of rapid breakdown and wear of the cutting edge. A research project is proposed in which in the main object is to model the surface formation mechanism due to cutting. The tool was assumed to be dull, that is, its edge has a finite radius. In order to study the effect of the radius of cutting edge on the surface formation, tools having different cutting edges were used. For orthogonal cutting experiment, cast iron and glass were chosen as brittle materials. Plowing forces acting in the cutting edge were estimated and its effect on the surface roughness was studied by observing the machined surface using optical microscope.

Mechanism of Apatite Formation on Bioactive Titanium Metal

  • Bioactive titanium metal can be prepared by simple 5M-NaOH treatment and subsuquent heat treatment at $600^{\circ}C$ to form an amorphous sodium titanate on its surface. In the present study, mechanism of apatite formation on the titanium metal was investigated by examining its surface compositional and structural changes in a simulated body fluid. The apatite formation on the metal was found to proceed in the sequence of 1)$Na^+$ ion release from the sodium titanate to form hydrated titania abundant in Ti-OH groups, 2) early and selective binding of calcium ions with the Ti-OH groups to form a calcium titanate, and 3) late binding of phosphate ions to make apatite nucleation and growth. This indicates that Ti-OH groups do not directly induce the apatite nucleation, but via formation of a calcium titanate.

A Numerical Study on the Formation Mechanism of a Mesoscale Low during East-Asia Winter Monsoon

  • Mesoscale low is often observed over the downstream region of the East Sea (or, northwest coast off the Japan Islands) during East-Asia winter monsoon. The low system causes a heavy snowfall at the region. A series of numerical experiments were conducted with the aid of a regional model (MM5 ver. 3.5) to examine the formation mechanism of the mesoscale low. The following results were obtained: 1) A well-developed mesoscale low was simulated by the regional model under real topography, NCEP reanalysis, and OISST; 2) The mesoscale low was simulated under a zonally averaged SST without topography. This implies that the meridional gradient of SST is the main factor in the formation of a mesoscale low; 3) A thermal contrast ($>10^{\circ}C$) of land-sea and topography-induced disturbance served as the second important factor for the formation; 4) Paektu Mountain caused the surface wind to decelerate downstream, which created a more favorable environment for thermodynamic modification than that was found in a flat topography; and 5) The types of cumulus parameterizations did not affect the development of the mesoscale low.

  • The paper will present chip formation mechanism and surface integrity generation mechanism based on the systematical experimental tests. Some basic factors such as the end milling cutter tooth number, cutting forces, cutting temperature, cutting vibration the chip status, the surface roughness, the hardness distribution and the metallographic texture of the machined surface layer are involved. The chip formation mechanism is typical thermal plastic shear localization at high cutting speed with less number of shear ribbons and bigger shear angle than that at low speed, which means lack of chip deformation. The high cutting speed with much more cutting teeth will be beneficial to the reduction of cutting forces, enlarge machining stability mot depression of temperature increment anti-fatigability as well as surface roughness. The burrs always exist both at low cutting speed and at high cutting speed. So the deburring process should be arranged for milling titanium alloy in my case.

Effect of Substrate Concentration and Feeding Period Ratio on Sludge Granulation in UASB Process (UASB 공정에서 기질농도 및 기질주입 기간비가 슬러지 입상화에 미치는 영향)

  • The basic mechanism of the granular sludge formation which is the most important factor in the start-up and stable operators is not confirmed yet. In this study, the effect of granular sludge formation was investigated with the different substrate concentrations and the various ratios of substrate supply/deficiency. The granular sludge formation in the UASB reactor was closely related to the substrate concentrations and the ratio of substrate supply/deficlency The granular sludge formation was not accelerated at low substrate concentration. It was convinced that granular sludge formation was accelerated when the substrate supply with high concentration was stopped at UASB reactor. From this experiment, it was estimated that granular sludge was formed by the combination of hydrogen utilizing bacteria that form hydrogen condition and acid forming bacteria at substrate deficit condition by mutual symbiosis. Though the removal efficiency of organic matter was decreased as the influent substrate concentration was Increased, the higher the influent substrate the better the granular sludge formation.
